TD Ameritrade vs Fidelity - What You Need to Know!

  • In this video, I talk about TD Ameritrade vs Fidelity. I break down all of the similarities and differences between TD Ameritrade and Fidelity so that you can choose the right brokerage.
    To compare TD Ameritrade vs Fidelity, I start by analyzing their fee structures. TD Ameritrade's fees and Fidelity's fees are actually very similar, but they have some important differences.

    Overall, it seems like Fidelity has a slightly better fee structure than TD Ameritrade, but their website is a little bit difficult to navigate. There is a $0 commission with both brokerages and a 65 cent options contract fee. Other than trading, neither of them have annual fees or inactivity fees. Both of their pay structures are fantastic.
    Second, I compare the features of Fidelity vs TD Ameritrade. With TD Ameritrade, you can invest in forex and other things that you cannot invest in on Fidelity.
    Fidelity seems to be less versatile and more suitable for beginners, especially because they offer fractional shares, which TD Ameritrade does not. This makes Fidelity better for people with small investing accounts.
    Next, I look at the customer service of TD Ameritrade vs Fidelity. Overall, their customer service is quite similar, but Fidelity earned a higher customer service rating on NerdWallet than TD Ameritrade did. Fidelity also offers a virtual assistant in their app.
    This brings me to the last step where I compared the TD Ameritrade mobile app with the Fidelity mobile app. Fidelity's app has a significantly better rating on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
    In the end, I laid out the major differences of TD Ameritrade vs Fidelity. The best $0 commission brokerage for you depends on your priorities.
    Both of these brokerages are great and you really cannot go wrong. Personally, I have a TD Ameritrade account and I have no complaints. However, Fidelity is more popular and I have only heard good things. I hope this video helped you compare the two brokerages and make an educated decision. Really, both are well-established, great companies that will serve you well in your investing career.
    Nothing in this video should be taken as financial advice or any kind of advice. This video and everything I say in it is meant for informational and entertainment purposes only. Facts may or may not be true and could change after posting the video.
    If you want to learn more about investing and you enjoy my commentary then feel free to subscribe to my channel. I try to break down investing for beginners and help them choose the best $0 commission brokerage.

    Thanks for reviewing these. I just have one thing to add. I have accounts in both (my Fidelity account actually holds my assets and my TD Ameritrade has a $0 balance). The reason have both is due to a OTC stock I’m invested in (JENGQ for anyone interested). For whatever reason, Fidelity only offers delayed quotes for it. However, TD Ameritrade shows JENGQ in real-time quotes. So, as of now, I only use TD Ameritrade to check the current stock price.

    Hi, thank you for this information! I’m new to stocks, but I read in the comments of another one of your videos, in which you compare Robinhood to TD Ameritrade, that Robinhood does NOT have an option for a beneficiary. I have children, so I’m interested in this feature. I read that TD Ameritrade DOES has an option for it, which saves a headache, as far as not having to get a lawyer to access the funds, in comparison to Robinhood.

    You're comparing the Fidelity App vs TD Ameritrade Banking App. You should be comparing the Fidelity App to the Think or Swim App. That's the real difference between these offerings. The ToS App is basically a mobile mirror of the platform that is not only more convenient, but substantial for active trading in comparison to Fidelity. I personally like Fidelity for everything but the actual platforms, which coincidentally is also the biggest hang-up between the two. I would prefer to get away from the PFOF and delayed order execution at TD (maybe the Schwab merger actually helps this), but the Fidelity platform is so much less robust and convenient (both desktop and mobile).

      I've been using Fidelity but think I'm going to switch to TD. I feel like TOS has a much better desktop and mobile app than the Fidelity counter parts. It feels much more up to date and updates P/L in a more understandable way. TD or TOS shows P/L to date for your entire account, whereas fidelity will only show P/L for current positions, unless you change your settings to see total Profit/Loss. Overall, I prefer the ToS platform over Active Trader Pro. The only downside I would say, is that TD does not offer fractional shares. Which from my perspective, should and will deter investors with smaller portfolios. Most people can not afford to own individual stocks that are worth several hundred or thousand a piece. I think this would hurt your ability to diversify more, which is a negative for sure.

    You left out some very important information. Schwab lets you set up a trade 24/7, it executes when the market opens. TD Ameritrade only on business days. TDAmeritrade offers trailing stop loss at a time of the stock purchase. Schwab makes you wait until the purchase executes to set a stop loss. Big pain in neck. Webul does not offer stop loss that's good til canceled, so its worthless.

    Is there any way to avoid the transfer out fee from TD ameritrade? I made the mistake of just opening my Roth IRA there but then realized I like fidelity better because of fractional shares. I didn’t make any trades on my TD ameritrade account I just funded it and I’m switching the funds over to fidelity. Don’t make the same mistake as me, make sure to do your research before you open an account with a brokerage 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • @joeywakeman3098
      @joeywakeman3098  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So you don’t have any stocks? I believe that means you can withdraw the cash back to your bank and then move the money into Fidelity from there. The transfer fee applies when you move assets directly from TD to Fidelity. The problem for most people is they have to sell their stock and pay cap gains

    • @aileenayala6426
      @aileenayala6426 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don’t have any stocks but I already transferred out my account to fidelity, now I’m just waiting for it to process that’s why I wasn’t sure if the fee will still apply to me?

They can keep it, especially if it means I can transfer to Fidelity without fees since it won't be a FULL transfer out. Did you ever incur any fees?

      @@joeywakeman3098 I opened an account with TD to make a prior year contribution for 2020. However, I want to move to Fidelity. Like, @Valenci, I only funded the account but never invested. Thought about withdrawing back to my bank, but won't that undo the prior year contribution? Thinking I need to transfer directly to Fidelity and let them keep the 2 cents interest, which would in turn keep me from doing a full transfer out.

    • @aileenayala6426
      @aileenayala6426 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Christina yeah they took out a $75 fee for transferring my account even though I didn’t invest anything. I would recommend pulling it out to your money to the bank like he suggested if you don’t want any fees.

    This is a tough comparison. Both have very good customer service. Both are good for day traders.
    TD tends to be an all you can trade buffet (Day trading, Option trading, Futures, and Foreign exchange). The bad thing is their Index mutual funds have higher than average expense ratios.
    Fidelity leans towards frugal long-term investing and day trading. The lowest costing Index mutual funds in the industry for retirement accounts. The 2nd fastest broker for processing day trade orders (Lightspeed being #1).

    Wish I can afford the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder....please get those chips out so the prices come down because it is getting ridiculous. DEFINITELY DONT LIKE THE ELECTRIC SHIFTER.....unnecessary idea to save money on essential moving parts. For example let's say down the road you need to put your pathfinder in neutral for the tow truck to get you out of a jam because your truck doesn't start. How do we do that???? Also because this new shifter doesn't have a long history of reliability, perhaps there will be MANY electrical issues and shifting problems down the road??? Sometimes I just dont UNDERSTAND why car companies just cannot leave the Essentials alone?
    I mean if it ain't broke dont fix it....
    I may not buy any truck with that feature........JUST BECAUSE
    This example may be the same as the push button start instead of a key start. When one wants to power up and down the windows while the vehical is off now you will have to start up the vehicle, burn gas just to get air....
