We need a list of filters that have holes instead of louvers , no excess sloppy glue, and bypass valve that passes the flashlight test.

I would go with the "Fake FRAM " aka FRAM Endurance which isn't even made by FRAM but by Champ Labs for FRAM.... still wouldn't use it for 25 000 miles though, about 5 or 6K

Sounds like it's the same filter as the Amsoil or VP Racing filter also made by Champion Labs.

    Oil Filter Friday!!
I've been using the Fram Ultra on my 5.0 F150 since new in 2017. The new Endurance seems to be similar to the original Ultra when it still had wire backing.
I'm sticking with Fram... but wouldn't hesitate to use the Wix if needed.

Wix switched to same backing(polymer) as Puro Boss (both M&H cos), a while ago. Just haven't updated box yet. Imo and in my observation, polymer backing every bit as good and durable as wire. The Mercury filter looks like a Premium Guard made filter, likely a blended media. Said before, can't directly compare synthetic vs cellulose/blended media area. It's depth media (syn) vs surface media. Honesty, I'd use any of the filters. All things considered, likely give FE the edge. Thanks for vid.

The color of the endcaps, the coil spring, the spacers on the base end and the way the bypass valve is attached to the endcap lead me to believe the Mercury filter was made by Sakura in Indonesia. The only telltale Sakura sign that is missing is the cup on the end of the coil spring. See previous videos with Sakura C-1821 and Subaru 15208AA20A for reference.

Maybe next time you should make a point that the people (like your example) NEVER poke the plastic through the hole. Always peel it by the outside edge! Yes the plastic can break and get stuck in the filter then instantly get flowing around inside the engine. Most people don't know the mounting hole is the return of the flow, not the inlet.

  • @jamescaron6465
    @jamescaron6465 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Great Job, Pete and thanks for sharing, Tony. The Mercury Filter seems to be the best made, I like how clean it is, the coil spring and a core with holes and the extra media. The Fram uses nice media with that wire mesh backing but dang it is sloppy with the glue and I don't like that "stick on" bypass valve. It just seems cheap to me and could be prone to leakage. The Mercury filter media seems to be a standard cellulose. If you took the Wix media and stuck it into the Mercury filter, you'd have the perfect filter. The Wix wins on the media, bypass valve and cleanliness. But they are all nice filters.

Winner = Mercury hands down. Holes are binary (there or not) and open flow, louvers can fluctuate in opening width. Hard to tell bad louvers without destroying the filter (or your engine). Fram also still carrying its inherent design flaw - using leaf spring as a plug in center tube passes dirty oil...

I have to question the wix ! The box shows a metal backing and rated at 35 micron - the fram has a true metal backing and good filter media ! The mercury is clean and has more pleats plus a " boing boing " coil spring but not so great filter media ! I prob would take the fram for the win on this one ! 👍

  • @user-zo2ho8tq5x

I would use any of the three filters. However, the sloppy glue on the Fram makes an observant person wonder if it was someone’s first day on the job. The glue does not really deteriorate or dissolve in the oil but it takes away from the professional workmanship in the manufacturing process.

The Fram filter media does look the tightest in the microscope view. It has the shortest length of filter media therefore I don't believe it's good up to 25,000 miles as advertized. But did you notice the marketing trick?
It states that it can filter 99% of dirt "greater than 20 microns".
"Greater than 20 microns" can equal 35 microns like the Wix brand filter advertizes. It's a suckers tactic with advertizing; the Fram filter never stated that it included 20 microns. They've always had great marketing people to sucker you into buying their junk.
I still like the fact that the Mercury and Wix filters had more filter media. In my personal situation, I would use the Mercury or Wix for the facts I don't "extensively beat" on my engines, nor run them extremely hard for long periods of time.
It's been said that "I change clean oil", I've never blown engine because of it. Yes I've had some used engines quit running on me that others maintained, but I've repaired the engines and drove them many years and miles afterwards.
Where do you get your oil filter canister cutters? Please send me the link or address without the .coms, .or nets, etc... because sometimes this phone will not follow links sent to me.
Thank you for your interesting and informative videos. (I love the specs posted) Stuff like this matters to people like me and many others.

No clear winner in this one. All 3 have things I really like in a filter and all 3 have areas where they disappoint.
For the Mercury, it has easily the most filter media but doesn't list micron rating or efficiency, as well as the lack of synthetic media.
The Fram had the synthetic media but was chintzy with it along with the sloppy gluing.
The Wix had the flimsiest can as well as being the lightest of the three, but at least gave you more media than the Fram while not as sloppy in the gluing.
My ideal filter, which doesn't exist here, would have the Mercury's heft and overall construction, along with the same amount of filter media, but synthetic like the Wix XP or Fram Synthetic Endurance.

Well, then you won't be using any full synthetic media oil filter, because they all require some backing for support. Never seen any evidence that the backing restricts oil flow and synthetic media more flow friendly, not that it really matters in passenger vehicle use.

They were implemented when the oil change intervals were extended in these engines. They’ve been used for years without any problems whatsoever.
