I’m a fan of hole louvers and the big inlet holes fo sho. One filter ago I tried the Boss filter on my Cummins. Off the get go I noticed terrible oil pressure especially at idle. So bad I’d give it small revs at the red light.couldn’t wait to change my oil. When I changed the oil I looked at the louvers and they looked tighter than the usual. Heard great things about the purolator boss but that turned me off. I’d use any of these two filters with those open louvers and big base plate holes over the previous anytime! Men, check those louvers before you buy.
Yep Very Good Advice, I'll pin your comment so that it sits on top. I did a couple of videos on louvers that were not fully opened, here they are. Thanks! th-cam.com/video/UFftfcUHypA/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/FPRRzWE55GQ/w-d-xo.html
Have you tried Donaldson blue?
In that application, a louver is going to be more flow restrictive than a plain old 'hole'. The louver even if it's open enough is going to be a 'flow director'. I've noticed that too on certain filters impacting oil pressure. Other than that core, I think the Boss is pretty good filter. I don't think theres any 'one' filter that has all the best features. I had a Pure One and switched to a Fram Ultra and that Ultra has some pretty puny tapping plate entrance holes on some numbers, like the one I used. I still think the Titanium is the best Fram filter, but I haven't bought one in a year.
@@vincemajestyk9497 I meant to say I’m no longer a fan of louvers. Much more comfortable with the holes. I know the boss is good per testing I’ve watched .
@@AntoineClaquin-cf2hd I thought about it. For most of the almost 20
Years I’ve had my 1st gen I ran (I know) the fram pro. Cellulose with metal end caps, no bypass. Got 2.5 cases for a dollar each from Walmart. It was ph3678A.”A” stands for adjusted because in the begging fram did kill a bunch of Cummins and took in a major lawsuit. Learned that later. Anyways after 4-5 month oci’s and rotella t-4 with no problems I’m recently experimenting with different filters. Changed to t-6 and a fram endurance. Feels great, oil pressure is awesome. Checked the louvers before I purchased
You have a formidable dedication to showing us the good or not so good filters. I can only thank you for the materials you use, and if they contain dangerous glues.
You're Welcome and Thanks!👍💯
I agree, the Mobil is better.👍
I don't like K&N, too many BS products.
Great Job, Pete! Those are big filters! Both look like pretty good but I'd take the Mobil 1 because it has more and superior media and appears to be newer.
Plastic does not seal 100% like metal or glass will. It will still allow gas like water vapor seep in. that's why a sealed bottle of Coke in a plastic bottle can go flat if you leave it long enough. After what was probably 20 years, enough water vapor seeped in to form surface rust. Oh yea, never use oil that is over 5 years old for that reason.
Thanks, Jim👍💯
Thank you for showing us what is exactly inside our oil filters. Please keep up the great work!
You're Welcome! Thanks👍💯
From every filter I've seen opened up, I still don't think you can beat MicroGard Select. I don't plan on using anything else unless something changes with them. I'm going to recommend them to my dad for his Cummins pickups.
So nice of Peter! Another great comparison! Thumbs Up! 👍
Thanks, Ella😊
Have a Great Week👍💯
@@WhipCityWrencher You, too! Thanks, Cuz! 😊
Another great review and video. Mobil filter 👍
Thanks, Merri👍💯
You are the filter King. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Greg
I appreciate it😊👍💯
@@WhipCityWrencher people like you will make oil filter makers do a better job on their products. Thanks
@@user-px2xz1bu1x I hope so👍💯

I try and make an oil filter inspection video every Friday on this TH-cam channel, Thank You!
Great video, thanks I always wanted to see the inside of a K&N oil filer
You're Welcome WrenchingMafia👍💯
Great info
Like 191 great info 👍
Definitely the Mobil1 filter is better
You have to remember that the K&N branded filter is designed for “performance” purposes. Almost all performance oil filters sacrifice filtering ability in favor of flow. K&N, Motorcraft and a few others offer performance versions of their popular part numbers.
Yep, true👍
Great video Pete. M1 id go with.
Thanks, John👍
Thank you for your content. 😊
You're Welcome! and Thanks!👍
Those huge filters would probably make great desktop 🗑 trashcans or pen holders 🖊 for a office or shop desk
True, Ha Ha, 🤣
Great content, love your videos. Keep em coming
Appreciate it! Thanks👍💯
Great video Whip, if it came between the 2, I would use the Mobil filter. Thanks.
Thanks👍💯
Thank you for your video!
You're Welcome Thanks!👍💯
Hey friend like 190 👍
Thanks for the visit😊
Mobil 1 wins this one. I'm a K&N " Loyalist " but K&N oil filters work differently to others. K&N filters the engine oil quicker then OEM and Other brand filters BUT it doesn't hold much contaminants then other brands as K&N oil filters are made for Performance Driving.
Mobil 1 looks better in construction and quality.
If you ever do T shirts, a good one might say "IT COULD GET UGLY FOLKS!" :)
🤣 Thats Good! I may do that😊👍💯
Maybe manufacturers could start using gasket material on the leaf spring now that you’ve proven they’re not sealed with your light test.
These filters go through some rigorous testing. Most car manufacturers recommend the leaf springs since they mitigate the core tilting in the can. Coil springs allow that core to move all over.
I have to wonder about the seal while under spring tension in the can. Oil is going to take the path of least resistance, so probably through the filter media. Leakage between the flat spring and core may not happen in actual use.
Have you watched wcw test this? It looks pretty lousy to me. Fram Ultra Synthetic filter used to have gasket material at that junction. Unfortunately no longer. Id still prefer it to be there if they use a leaf spring.
So far the only one that past the light test has been the Purolator Boss oil filter. There are others that use this same kind of bypass valve that will probably do just as good, I just haven't tested them yet.
Good video as always.
How do we send you stuff like Peter did? I have an oil filter I want to send you.
Sure send me an email and let me know what you want to send me, Thanks! Poker4me007@gmail.com
Since watching some of your videos I bought the tool to cut open these oil filters lol, so far I have done 6 motorcraft filters and now all but one of them the end caps were loose and not glued down. One filter was off of my own car and it was a fl910 and the end cap came loose but no tears, but it has a bunch of loose glue piece on both the outside and inside of the filter element so I'm wondering if any of that glue came loose and is now stuck in my engine somewhere. But its kinda sad that nearly 6 oil filters off of each car one including my own with all at 5k miles have all failed in some way with the tears or end caps.
Yes it is, Motorcraft oil filters aren't as good as they once were.☹
how do you see or know that it is a synthetic blend media if the manufacturer does not say anything about it ?
Well if I can't find it documented then that's what I say "I don't know what the micron rating or filter media is made of". But usually, you can find it on their websites, filter boxes, etc..
You can 'generally' tell by the look and feel of it. Also, under a microscope it's easier. The interlocking striations or orientation of cellulose is much more randomized than synthetic. Cellulose is actually a pretty good (usually superior) filtering media. It just doesn't hold up for very long. It will absorb a small amount of moisture but is more sensitive to temperature and has, generally, a shorter life span.
Those K&N's had a lot of problems with those spot welded nuts and the weld penetrating the can and leaking, worse if you used the nut to install it. They recommend ONLY using that nut to REMOVE the filter. I never liked their filters anyway. The air filters are pure garbage. Ruined a lot of engines, especially diesels when it was a popular upgrade.
K&N filter nut barely works. Most of the time a 1" socket slips off if the filter is on tight. I use the K&N exclusively on our vehicles despite this. Think K&N has downsized all of their filters recently.
That 'nut' is practically worthless. It's tapered so it's tough to get any size wrench to fit it. K&N was bought by Goldmann-Sachs of Wall Street a long time ago and gutted and run into the ground so I wouldn't expect to see any concerns about 'performance' or quality over profits to come first. Take a look at the last 10 years financials or so. It was a 'plum' they picked and harvested for capital. Look at it now.
Are there any filter brands that dont use a sticker? just curious.
Sure, a few off the top of my head, Baldwin, Fleetguard, Fram, Denso, Mahle, Hengst, I'm sure there are others.
Nope..KandN would filter better.under microscope, not as many empty spaces in between media as Mobil had.
Sorry, You have it backward.
The Florida pool pump motor repair guy 32750 approved ! that was good info & see WCW
Thanks, Jay👍💯
