Eleven months after wrecking at sea, the Italian luxury liner awaits one of the most expensive and daunting salvage operations ever. Lesley Stahl reports.
Thank you kindly. Was a feat no man kind in the history of planet earth ACCOMPLISHED. I AM master engineer and salvage expert nick SLOANE cape town South Africa 🇿🇦
I still can't believe this happened. I went on a ship called the Carnival Liberty, which is literally the same ship as this, just the Carnival branded one, and to know a ship that size went down is just crazy. These things are HUGE!
"It's the largest passenger ship ever capsized, easily surpassing Titanic???" Titanic didn't even capsize as she sank! She went down almost completely stable! This reporter needs to look up some facts before saying things like that
"That's a really big ship. What is this, some kind of water? What do we have here, like, some men wearing diving gear? That ship weighs more than 56 trillion pancakes not including the butter"
Maritime law requires that the Captain is the last person off the Ship, Aircraft, Spaceship, etc... No one would make a statement with small children aboard his craft that it's "Survival of the fittest", Wow how are the children and elderly to get off the ship without help from the crew who knows the ins & outs of the ship. He isn't a man he's a wimp, what kind of a person does something that would cause people to loose there lives. All they wanted was to take a cruise. Hero, look up the word.
Ive read a few comments saying she could be repaired, but would be to expensive. Fact is she could Not be repaired for all the money in the world ,the hull alone would never be able to pass an engineering survey which is needed for its safty certificates and there is no insurance co in the world that would insure her knowing the stress the hull is under just on a normal day let alone a storm at sea, its intirely to much damage, and if the Kiel is damaged u can forget it right off.
cont'd from previous: architects and planners who have designed this incredible strategy. We do hope to see more professional coverage giving these two companies the respect and credit they truly deserve. I mean, look at what they are trying to do here for Christ sake!
@Brandon Zuzak How so? Titanic was blown way out of proportion. It became famous for being the largest luxury liner of its time and sinking when it was considered unsinkable. If Titanic was still here today nobody would think twice about it. The fact it did sink is not surprising it had many flaws and in my opinion is an overhyped story.
Wouldn't it make more sense to simply patch up the hull of the Costa Concordia, repair any damaged piping, and put the ship back in service as a cruise ship?

bruh now i dont want them to raise it after they said They will raise it and scrap it Bruh i thought they'd raise it for Fans to see it and like put it in a Museum or some sort.
It been the water to long it better price wish to just build a new ship. Salt water does a lot of damage. Plus them pulling it up as well will cause more.
im kinda sad they salvage it as they did with the olympic, why dont they just like repair it and kind of give it a safery measure, and more upgrades for the hull
It can b repaired but it make no sense because the salt water ganna corrode the while internal of the ship. And it way to much money to replace engine an rewire the while thing. Plus the have insurance so why would that repair if the can build another.
Dead people was the story.... Too few life boats, the haves and have knots was the story The iceberg was the story the fact that they turned the ship when they should have just hit the iceberg head on was the story..... The water tight doors that didn't exist was the story... Unsinkable that was just egotistical men who thought they had built a ship that couldn't sink when they had water tight doors like your ice trays in your freezer when one filled up the others spilled into the next one.
And what is the deal with Leslie smiling at this "crime scene" and tragic disaster?! Couldn't the 60 minutes dimwits have told her to at least try to fake a serious or concerned look? I guess a answered my own question.
LESLEY STAHL: "And they have to be percisely [sic] welded, correct?" SERGIO GIROTTO: Precisely! L.S.: "And they have to be percisely [sic] welded, correct?" S.G.: Uh..........I dunno. I suppose. L.S.: "And they have to be percisely [sic] welded, correct?" S.G.: HUH?! Who cares? What difference would that make? L.S.: "And they have to be percisely [sic] welded, correct?' S.G.: Hmm, yeah, that would help. L.S.: "And they have to be percisely [sic] welded, correct?" Pff, no wonder she's a member of the pseudo-intellectual ELITE!
Leslie is a poor representation of the United States and of 60 minutes. She carries herself caddy as if she is more importantly tying to impress the engineers personally with bimbo actions, questions and body language instead of reporting one of the biggest projects in the world contracted between our country and Italy. Shame on you 60 minutes.. You have certainly been around long enough to know how to report massive impact information to your viewers. I am embarrassed for the engineers,
This project was enormously impressive
Thanks for watching
as a mechanical engineer I love such works because they brainstorm you and makes you think ultimately
I hear you LOUD N CLEAR. CHEIF ENGINEER AND SALVAGE EXPERT NICK SLOANE CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA
These men are impressive . Respect

The size of a ship doesn't matter when the captain and or crew make bad errors in judgement.
It's insane how much power we as humans have.
came to know of this through edx course 7 yrs later :)
Also this ship is 70 feet larger than the Titanic not twice the size as she states. Just one of many needed corrections.
one of the most impressive engineering accomplishments in my 60 plus years...WOW
i feel like this happend yesterday.. jeez 2012 went by fast. happy new year!
And NONE of this would even be necessary if it wasn't for that *DICKWAD* of an Italian Captain who sailed the ship into the rocks.
Jay B yeah, he even bailed with all crew while there were still about 2,000 people on board. What an idiot 🤦🏻♂️
Why do they keep saying 60,000 tons 😂 It was 113,000 Tons
Never been an equally challenging piece of engineering like this since D-Day invasion of Normandy
th-cam.com/video/uQJ6IMREvz8/w-d-xo.html....kursk rescue
What happened to the personal belongings of the passengers who were on board the ship?
"It's the largest passenger ship ever capsized, easily surpassing Titanic???" Titanic didn't even capsize as she sank! She went down almost completely stable! This reporter needs to look up some facts before saying things like that
you should keep it as a memorial
What a shame, it looked like a nice ship.

Where's the next video like has the project been finish and finished perfectly n so n so
whoever uploads these videos we need more volume please
The Titanic didn't capsize though
Yes.
Its such an eyesore
9:10 so happy the enviroment came as a high priority

What does surpass mean?! 🙁
God speed! Pray for those divers!
How to see the shipwreck in the city
Boy, I sure would love a couple of those chaise lounges for my deck. Anyone know about a salvage sale?
almost 40 people..

The constant hand motions 🤣 yes the ship is going to “roll”
this happened when i was and a ncl cruise
Wouldn't it make more sense to simply patch up the hull of the Costa Concordia, repair any damaged piping, and put the ship back in service as a cruise ship?
There was so much damage inside the ship that it was impossible to repair it. And people died on there so that would deter vacationers.
if she got balanced on the waters again she'll be named as Costa Concordia 2 and able to sail through the seas again
thats what i was thinking but maybe it cost more to fix
My intent was that the salt water has destroyed everything "soft".
Anyone know the progress on this

Titanic didn't capsize!!!!!
What happened to her funnel
its costa and friday the 13???? oh no

Why waste so much money to put it in scraps wtf?
what about sealing the outside of the ship and pump out th water
The damage inside the ship was extensive.
So no one remember Pearl Haber and the USS Okahoma? i
bruh now i dont want them to raise it after they said They will raise it and scrap it Bruh i thought they'd raise it for Fans to see it and like put it in a Museum or some sort.
why does she say that it is 60,000 tons? That is tiny! the ship is 115,000 tons.
Judy Woodruff... One of these daze gonna be nothing left but two beautiful Eyes! LOL
yes lol type on my part lol
It been the water to long it better price wish to just build a new ship. Salt water does a lot of damage. Plus them pulling it up as well will cause more.
im kinda sad they salvage it as they did with the olympic, why dont they just like repair it and kind of give it a safery measure, and more upgrades for the hull
And all of us paid for this that went on cruises as the price went up to pay for this.
'Americans' is much easier to say than 'U.S.A.ans'.
.. 3:18 really tho?
why would they salvage that ship and not save it
Salt water....
They cant ever fix that ship to the point of being cost effective...
What is the deal with the whale similes? It was as if this was aimed at small children.
did anyone die on this wreck
Only 32 Died
Academia Shipper only?
The lady talking to the guy like he is the one that wrecked the ship. She is annoying....
60,000 tons? I thought it was over 100,000 tons.
It was 113,000 tons
Because if the ship collapse it ruin the Italy's environment
That thing is so big and ugly. I would cross the Atlantic in a life boat before I'd pay to go on a crate like that.
It can b repaired but it make no sense because the salt water ganna corrode the while internal of the ship. And it way to much money to replace engine an rewire the while thing. Plus the have insurance so why would that repair if the can build another.
Why do American journalists not research the details and walk into an interview sounding like a 10 year old?
they picked the wrong salvage crew. The removal has been moved to May 2014. I don't think this crew knows what the hell they are doing.
But are you talking about nationals, citizens, residents, or aliens?
Umm if i was om that ship
SORRY THIS IS NOTHING LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TITANIC PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The United States of America of the North American continent.
Did she say too much shit or too much ship to process lol?
Really?? Save the ship?? People died on that ship, it needs to be scrapped.
The Costa aren't can't hit the rock
eh, drill holes in it and let the marine life live in it.
You know, Mexico is on the north american part?
Costa comcordia😣
lol XD
Eff Leslie stall. Will never believe another word she says.
Pearl HARBOR
What happened to all the jewellery n peoples possessions ie rings n items etc bet the salvagers took them for there themselves
when you mean americans you mean to all people from america right because americans are people from american continent just letting you know buddy :)
Why didnt they fix it up,it would save alot of money
Tell you what, make a bid to buy it, and you can fix it up.
Lesley Stahl looked and acted like the typical clueless liberal that she is. Jeez, couldn't CBS have found someone else for this?
Lex5576 you couldn't have said it any better

The Titanic is much better than that big fat stairiroyded ship. Titanic was...beauty. 😧😔 Sorry. 🙁
True
i no rite

meh
