Captain was coward for abandoning the ship but that radio call between cost guard and captain was totally useless in that critical moment.

To all the people's defending the captain:
Schettino was the one who sank the ship and he is not the saviour you think he is.
He made it go too close to the coast just because he wanted to do the traditional greeting to Isola del Giglio (a greeting that is not in the ship schedule but some do because of tradition). Schettino was careless just because he wanted to show off and, instead of caring for safety, he decided to do the greeting without even checking the path of the ship.
He also didn't contact the port security right away and informed them of the danger. He took time and lied, saying it was just a BLACKOUT after (and only after) he was contacted from outside because of a crew member that was scared and contacted a relative.
And I dare you to say that that didn't contribute to what caused the panic and deaths that happened.
So, if you think that "saving" most of the people from the disaster you made because you were careless, killing around 50 and leaving the ship before the others is what a saviour should do, then I'm speechless.
Try telling that to the families of those who died.

The captain of the Titanic isn't the only person at fault for its sinking. Long before she set sail, she had a fire onboard & a few other small issues. All of which weren't checked to see if she was safe to sail, let alone take passengers. It was a whole host of failures that culminated in her fate.
The captain of the Concordia however has no such excuse. He chose to put that ship on a course that he knew was potentially dangerous. There was nothing wrong with the ship itself. His actions - or lack of - made things worse after the ship hit the rocks too. Turning the ship allowed more water to pour into its sub - compartments, which caused it to list at that odd angle. It also left the ship vulnerable to the tidal currents & winds, blowing it off course, with no means to counter it. That sandbank was a blessing in disguise, otherwise the ship would've continued taking on water, causing it to tilt even more & become fully submerged.

So what I'm hearing is: the captain fled inconspicuously, leaving a dancing troupe among others to do roll calls and maintain some semblance of order as evacuation got underway - until there were no boats left for them, so they plunged into the ice-cold Mediterranean in January and swam to shore?
Those kids are amazing, regardless of how they reference the Titanic.

If a ship hits something, there should be a universal law that all people assemble at the emergency stations UNTIL the ship has been assessed. How many times must this BS need to be repeated before they learn?

Imagine. People here relate to the movie Titanic
But imagine not being able to speak italian while most of the crew can't speak anything but italian! And imagine being in open water with several nautical miles between you and land. No rescue helicopters, only small wodden boats, morse code and the hope that you won't freeze to death even if you are in a lifeboat.
One should never compare misery to one another, but imagine comparing running aground on a populated island to the loss of Bismarck or Estonia - both in open water.

I want you to know that the titanic and the Concordia where both ships and they both sank, they where both in water, they both hade no one to save them (first atleast) and that comparing these two tragedies is just showing us how these two events have a lot in Common, and this just how even though we have learned a lot because of the titanic these tragedies still happen and we should still continue to make the boats safer and we have to make better evacuation plans.
If we relate Titanic to Concordia we only mean it as “look this is similar to titanic” and we are not trying to offend anyone.

People could swim to shore and on top of that people could stay on the tilted ship for a week and wait for help, i mean they had somewhere to stay, they were not forced to jump into the water.
