    This reminds me of the sinking of M/S Estonia. That ship was smaller, about 25 % than the Costa Concordia. At the time of the sinking Estona had 989 people onboard and 852 did not make it. That makes this disaster much smaller, only about 20 people are dead and some are still missing. And that may be very hard for their families, but still, they saved a lot of people. And they could have saved more, if they only had a real captain.

    Big difference between Titanic and Concordia is that Titanic actually had a competent and disciplined crew. A hallmark of British seamanship. The manner and negligence with which Concordia's crew conducted themselves was a shock to the entire maritime industry worldwide. Titanic was so tragic because the ship itself was a death trap by design......lifeboats for only half on board.....sailing on icy waters. Concordia would've been a masterpiece of safety had the crew did their job.

    • @MeBallerman
      @MeBallerman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Titanic captain was a clown and a show-off guy just like the Concordia captain was. He gave full power to set a new trans-atlantic record time, and at the same time letting the 1st class passangers use the ships emergency radio for calling their friends at home. He had been warned about icebergs, but didn't gave a rat's ass about it. He was fully occupied impressing the rich men and ladies when the ship crashed into an iceberg. Captain's fault alone.
      Compare to Schettiono here - exactly the same. On top of it Schettino was a coward who abandoned ship, which Titanic captain didn't. So what? The brave clown of a captain didn't save anything by staying there, except his own, useless honour, the poorer 2nd and 3rd class passangers became his victims. I don't think they can use his "staying on the bridge" to so much.
      If Titanic's crew were half as good as you say - why did they allow life boats with only few rich ladies and their dogs to sail away, when the vast majority still was on board? And why were the life boats so hard to get by? And why were there so few? No, the Titanic suffered a horrible dare devil of a captain, and some not-so-good crew, who smashed the ship into an iceberg on it's maiden voyage.
      lol it's 3 years agon you wrote your post.

    Two other web sites (including AIS) are showing that the turn was done in the opposite direction....not a left for a 180 degree turn, but to the right for an almost 360 degree turn ....The final result is the same (huge gash on the port side is up and the starboard site of the ship is under water....but still, did the dropping of the anchor and the actual directon of the turn cause her to list so much to the side opposite the gash.

    The funniest thing about all of this is because of the comparison with Titanic because. I have seen a photo of a Modern cruse ship from 2014 and it was photo shopped so that it looks like Titanic is in front of the modern cruse ship. When I saw that picture I never laughed so hard In a while because Titanic today is a tug boat compared to all other boats.

    Ship hits rock & gets holed in engineering spaces. Engine crew scrambling for their lives, all power is lost. Water tight doors fail due to lack on electrical power. The captain probably wasn't aware of actual damage for 15-30 minutes. When he is made aware he steers towards shore, momentum is carrying the ship along. Drops the hook (anchor), ships momentum pivots the ship to port & all the inrushing water slooshes to the port side and causes the ship to roll over.

    You'd think by now they'd make ships with compartments running the length of the ship, rather than how they are now, so that common scrapes like this one could be maintained

    • @th8257
      @th8257 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ships used to have those up until the early 1900s. They call them longitudinal compartments. They don't have them now because they were found to make ships very unstable and capsize very quickly. The Lusitania had them and when she was torpedoed she developed such a bad list that the lifeboats on one side could not be lowered.

  • @KoldingDenmark
    @KoldingDenmark 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Costa Concordia displays the problem will all ships of that kind. They are upside down icebergs, not being able to handle critical situations without mechanical assistance to hold the balance. Look at the gigantic "flaps" it is equipped with. These boats are in serious trouble without power assistance. Without stabilising flaps these boats are unstable and will tilt in bad weather if they loose the power assistense to operate these flaps, i.e. if the engines die.

  • @DoyleRaizner
    @DoyleRaizner 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is one of those maritime tragedies that should not have happened. Modern ships are designed to remain afloat even after taking on a certain amount of water. But when the ship has such a huge gash on its side below the water line, the passengers should know how to evacuate the vessel which many of these souls did not.

    @TheHickstead the ship went down because of the rip in the side it it was a small rip that only effected one of the water tight compartments the ship would still be up right now but the rip effected multiple compartments and from what i understand when they made the turn is when the ship fell on its side which would mean that it was sinking because water was able to enter the ship at places the water normally wouldn't touch causing it to fill and go down

    Twice the size because of so many more decks. 4000 people on board with 1000 being crew? One crew member for every 3 passengers to me sounds extremely high. Plus they didn't seem properly trained for such a situation. Lack of communication/training was vital here. Plus, many died in the elevators that were stuck after the power went out. Nobody thought to check them? Has to be the worst way to die, in a 8x8 box with 10 other people, pitch black, and you start to feel water on your feet and rising. Completely %$@ing helpless. The captain only got 16 years for abandoning his post. Should be life, he lied to port authority about his ship, left the ship with 1000's still on board and refused to return. That's grade A douchbaggery award of the century.

    First, his navigator screws up by suggesting a "new short-cut that can trim 3 minutes off our voyage this evening..."; Then he immediately and heroically takes control of the emergency like a born leader with years of tactical training and nautical experience, and and begins to peacefully and methodically vacate all passengers and crew from the sinking ship.
    Then the unthinkable happens...he slips and falls into a right into a departing Life-Boat and is among the first to leave the ship. Did he bruise a knee? Did he twist an ankle?
    We're praying for you Captain and Thank you.

  • @MrDusty

    yes it was bigger than the grand titanic but titanic was built in 1909-1911 and íf titanic was built today it would be much bigger than this ship

      smith doe another movie that should be made is a movie about what would have happened if those supposed "asteroids" hit earth

    • @jsharps1000
      @jsharps1000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SwiftFoxyGamer agreed but we should focus more on the astroids point of view.

    • @BullsquidGaming
      @BullsquidGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      smith doe yes it should do what titanic did it at points during the movie zoomed out on the sinking ship then back to the main part inside the ship for the asteroid it'll goto the asteroid POV and show it getting closer and closer to earth then it'll go back to earth and the story

    • @jsharps1000
      @jsharps1000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SwiftFoxyGamer see i think we hit gold with the first idea about the captain and his lady friend. what would happen is rather the king of the world part it'd be "king of his penis" . you also had a good idea about the astroid we need to meet with a writer before our ideas get stolen from us.

    Passenger ships are judged by size by Gross Registered Tonnage. (GRT) This has nothing to do with weight. It measures the enclosed space in a ship. The Costa Concordia did not weigh 115,000 tons. The infamous and overrated Titanic was about 46,000 tons so the Concordia is 2.5 times bigger. Watertight compartment design has not changed that much in 100 years. You divide a ship into compartments and most ship's today are built to survive flooding in 2-3 compartments. Obviously, the damage was more severe than the cruise ship was designed to withstand. (And there is no need to cap watertight compartments, they will not overflow until a large number of sections have been breached)

    The comparisons to to Titanic seem needlessly sensationalist. Though this was tragic, it was nothing like Titanic, and to say otherwise is simply false.

    • @blara2401
      @blara2401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The comparisons happen because the sinking took place on the centennial year of Titanic sinking, and also because just enough compartments were damaged to sink the ship in both cases due to a similar type of collision (sideways grazing below the float line).

    @mskincaid1 - I think it is just a stupid comparison as who cares about the Titanic it is ancient history. I think what is interesting about this is how much new time it got around the world compared to far bigger disasters that did not have rich people on board. 1000 dead Filipinos wouldn't have got their own graphic.

  • @tylerfrederick246
    @tylerfrederick246 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Titanic was designed to float with 4 compartments flooded. Costa Concordia was only design to float with 2.

      so is your car. anything can kill you at any given time. I just got off a cruise ship last week, had the time of my life. Monday the sea was rough due to hurricane Irma, the cruise line change ports for us to keep us safe and let us still sail. I got another cruise booked for January and working on another one a year from now. life is to short to be worried about what will kill you, sadly we will all die one day, now yes we all want live as long as possible

    @blognewb I agree. The ability to communicate knowledge to lots of people has never been greater. Nobody wants to work all day and go home to watch tv and learn about how tomorrow is going to suck more. we, as americans, love to escape into disaster and adventure from arms length. Medical bills and bankruptcy is too close to home.
