I have adored shostakovich for years; I visited his grave at the novodevichy cemetery and paid my respects to him. This symphony is nothing short of a masterpiece.
My goodness the 2nd movement feels like rage personified. This symphony is a masterpiece.
2nd movement is a portrait of Stalin.
The 2nd movement is a dance. Footage of the Battle of Berlin clearly shows some Russian soldiers dancing to a a very similar rhythm after it was over.

Yeah, I remember having more than one version of this symphony when I was 16, and one the back of one LP the 2nd movement just had one word/name: Stalin. ...and I thought, Ah, that makes so much sense.
I love how serious and in a second it gets light like everything is ok just to bring you back to the darkness again lol

The flute and piccolo passage at 22:45 is very reminiscent of the passage just before the introduction of the second fugue subject in his last Prelude and Fugue from Op. 87
Someone made a comment that Valery didn’t shake hands with the concertmaster at the end of Symphony No. 5 and I discounted it, but the very next night for Symphony No. 10, the concertmaster was now the No. 2 violin, and the No. 2 violin from the night before was now the concertmaster... so I guess the maestro was dissatisfied with something

Movement 4 was so beautiful too damaged and emotional.
After the desolation of the first movement, and the withering criticism of Stalin in the scherzo, DS must have been, and perhaps can only have been optimistic about his country in the aftermath of the tyrant's death. A truly remarkable interpretation by the Russian maestro of maestri (is that the correct plural?) I love this work from beginning to end!

All the things he would potentially criticise Stalin for exist in western propaganda exclusively. Shostakovich is so great the west back then couldn't cancel him and they had to attach this 'anti-Stalin' disclaimer to his works)) Sickening.

On the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth, a journalist named David Torres wrote this:
"Onceupon a time, the human race sent a probe outside the solar system. Among the messages sent to a hypothetical extraterrestrial intelligence is a Bach prelude. No one could find a more naked, more beautiful music: all the scientific, mathematical and artistic achievements of Humanity quintessentialized in three glorious minutes. But, like Mozart, this music speaks to us not of what we are but of what we would like to be. If, in addition to beauty, we had wanted to tell all the evil, misery and lies that inhabit this little blue tear, we would not have sent old Bach as ambassador. We would have sent Shostakovich."

The ending doesn't sound stressful enough. Everyone should listen to Mravinsky's Prague 1955 version.
This interpretation is quite soft and playful compared to Yevgeny Mravinsky's...

I dislike Gergiev for his political views, and I somehow don't believe he is a very nice guy. But I have to admit he has Shostakovich in his blood like few others. And the world class Mariinsky orchestra are playing their heart out for him.

Just like Beethoven for Karajan or Furtwangler. I don't think Gergiev really supports what's happening in Ukraine. But obviously, he would've lost everything he has in Russia now.
