I have been listening to this piece of music for 70 years now, and I believe this is the best version I have ever heard. The depth of expression especially from the strings was superb, and I could not fault anything at all. Sublimely majestic, moving, the pace exactly on point especially with the unhurried Nimrod, with its crescendos never failing to evoke emotion. Well done
I am in total agreement with your comments. I first heard the Enigma Variations when I was about 5 years old in 1946. My father was a church organist and musician who left me with a love of Elgar, Brahms and many other composers . I have watched this particular performance many times and it never fails to move me. a wonderful orchestra and superb performers. Even the filming is excellent and I can almost imagine I am actually sitting in that audience.

My soul cried during "Nimrod" for reasons I cannot cannot, yet, comprehend or even know. It's breathtaking.
For me this is the sound of living to experience the sunrise after I have lost everything that made the sunrise worth living for. I had not thought of it as my soul crying before, but I think that must be what it is. That deep breath you take when you know that you must go on. (My name is also Alexandra ;} ).

The heart-stopping moment with the magical key change from “W.N.” to “Nimrod.”
One of the most truly magical moments in any composition. I have the last bars of W.N and first bars of Nimrod tattooed on my forearm...the only color in the whole thing is that single held note that bridges the two.
I had to go back and have another listen, I was boiling the kettle and missed it hahah!
Nimrod is my favourite classical piece by some margin and this just made it even better for me 🤩😍
You should take a look at Mr. Leonard Bernstein's Nimrod - his too was very slow! :-)

God I love these people. Literally waited until no more sound was in the room, and then politely clapped at the end, no yelling or cheering, or jumping to their feet like rowdy victors in a football game. I don't think they know how civilized, wonderful and refreshing this behavior is to an American.
I agree that American audiences sometimes exhibit excessive histrionics for mediocre work, but I thought a little more enthusiasm for this excellent performance was warrented here!

personally i like when the audience really show how much they liked a performance. like you don't have to go crazy but i think it's kinda boring if people just clap politely at the end like a middle school orchestra concert because classical music can be exciting and more than just a boring pastime for old rich people and it shows that

I'm not a huge Elgar fan but that transition into Variation IX 'Nimrod' has to be one of the most heart breaking passages I have ever heard! It breaks my heart anew every time I hear it and especially played so superbly by this wonderful Orchestra who play it so respectfully and powerfully!

I've personally always loved Elgar, I've always found his compositions elegantly simple to listen to but heartbreakingly beautiful and evoking. This is, as you said so respectfully articulated ❤

One of the most underrated orchestras in the world
This is one orchestra I really would like to attend at a live performance . Probably my favourite out of many others. This performance of Elgar's Enigma Variations is certainly at top of my music tree.
So many brilliant soloists!
The astonishing wind players! That clarinet!
That cello solo - my God! - and viola!
The timpanist! - a battalion!
A joy and a delight to listen to - and to watch! - from start to finish.
My biggest regret now that I've heard this is that I'll never be able to hear it for the first time again. Such a beautiful piece. I can't stop listening to it.

My music teacher in the eighties introduced us to Sir Edward William Elgar and after he played this he told us he was English.
I was so proud as I am of this exceptional Orchestra.

Between Nimrod and Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus there is something that is quintessentially British that stirs the soul. Can't help but love my nation after hearing this. Bravo
I am a Brit who has lived in the USA for50 years, I and my family are still very English and we come from Worcestershire where Sir Edward was also born, we have walked the same lanes and hills that he walked on and his music is VERY precious to us.
Bravo for a wonderful performance, perhaps you have finally proved that English music can only be performed by an English orchestra is NOT ALWAYS TRUE.
My family also comes Worcestershire, which town or village precisely did Elgar live near? My family comes from Kempsey
I am Polish, a violinist, in mind, heart and soul, and yet there will always be another world to conquer in the life of music. To me, no classical music will ever be an orphan, but secretly, we have our favorites; this one consumes me, places an emotional burden of consummate joy upon me which cannot be described.

Edward Elgar has to be one of if not my favorite composers of all time. This beautiful performance made his work shine just as he would have intended.
My mother was Polish and my father English. This is quite moving for me.

Elgar is very precious: Has sentiment -- but he's not sentimental; Has Drama -- but he avoids the caustic, corrupting melodrama. His work is just goodness. And this orchestra offers a fine performance. Thank you.

This is the version I return to time and time again for both its musical and video quality. Today, while listening to/watching this performance one more time, I remembered the recent passing of the much beloved Queen Elizabeth II, and the music, especially the "Nimrod" variation, seemed to take on extra layers of meaning, and I was deeply touched, again. If you know someone who has not listened to (or watched) this performance, I highly recommend that you introduce this version to him/her.
Beautifully put into context. And on the 13th November it will be played as always at the Cenotaph ceremony where the UK honours all those killed in war from the UK and Commonwealth. And of course this will be the first one for over 70 years where Her Majesty will not be present except in our hearts.

Nimrod was played at my grandmother's funeral, absolutely beautiful piece and reminds me of her.

I've stumbled here late. In tears. Trying to come to terms with everything everyone else is trying to come to terms with. This is just sublime. Makes me miss full orchestra; makes me miss full brass. Yes, I miss playing in a symphony. There's something about being surrounded by the sound of the music all around me. It scoops me up and takes me to another place.

I often say "Oh I have played that before"! ... but I really think it is a different feeling being on the stage/grounds/dirt. :) This is not to take away from any performance: there are so many I could never achieve or be a part of or otherwise comment on. Just wish I could have been there :)
@@renzo6490 I also sang in choir in college. We used to do several great pieces with full symphony and a 73 voice choir. It would send chills down my spine sometimes.
I read the comments first. Unsure of a Polish orch playing such British music. All the people who said this is great were right as rain. This is stupendous! It could not be any better. Bravos all round. Loved the trombones and tuba. All are excellent. Thanks from Atlanta.

Remember the people who afforded this music were the ones wrecking havoc upon the world as well. So this isn’t really indicative of peaceful times. It may sound it but you need to get your history right.
This is simply an amazing performance of Elgar... one of the very best. In terms of expression and tempo it cannot be bettered.
Variation XII (Andante) "B.G.N." is very touching. The cello solo is softly coming to us from heaven.
Poland, this symphony, and this conductor clearly understand the restrained depth of British emotion and nostalgia. Quite possibly the best rendition of Nimrod I've heard from the many 100's of attempts I've come across.

Stopped me in my tracks and Nimrod had me welling up with tears of joy. I had to play Nimrod over and over... Amazingly serene and rhythmic, had me open-mouthed and astounded. As far from Poland as i can be in the mountains of Tasmania, i was completely in that chamber and mesmerised. xxx thank you
Probably one of the best performances I have listened to. As for the playing of Nimrod, the pace was majestic, not hurried with each crescendo being slowly built upon. The rise and fall of the notes gave me a tingling sensation.

I listen to all these concerts all the time but this is the first time I had to stop what I was doing, sit down and just watch. Horripilation guaranteed.
A fine performance. To date I thought perhaps only the British could understand Elgar. But this is Polish soul and artistry. a truly wonderful interpretation of a fantastic piece of composition.
I've now listened to this TH-cam recording a number of times and feel I must thank you once again. I attended the Proms in London throughout the sixties and early seventies hearing several versions of this (ie Boult!). But, as I come back to this Warsaw recording, time and time again I feel this is the BEST recording I have ever heard. Such finesse, balance, feeling and... soul. The conductor's name is not one I can pronounce :) but I will remember it! Accept once again my thanks for a truly wonderful interpretation of a great piece of British music.
I lived in Poland for seven years and came to love the country. The Polish soul is a very old one. I saw evidence of it many, many times.
I am an American and it took me a while to understand this work. But I agree that this is the performance is the one I most want to listen to. Music is indeed universal, after all, we all love Shakespeare. (And Monty Python).

This performance is so moving. VIII and into Nimrod is sublime. Only discovered this the other day and can't stop listening to it. The best interpretation of this work I have ever heard. What an amazingly talented orchestra.
Jacek Kaspszyk is clearly an outstanding interpreter of Elgar. His conducting of “In the South” overture a few years back in London is the best I’ve ever heard and now one of the finest of the Enigma Variations. Please Mr. Kaspszyk give us performances with your outstanding orchestra of Elgar’s two remarkable symphonies!
I have two fine recordings of "In The South" and would have loved to have heard Maestro Kaspszyk's
version referred to here. He clearly has the measure of Elgar!

Vaughan Williams comes a very close second. But I've loved Elgar from childhood, andbthis isvthe best performamce of Enigma I've ever heard. And I'm Irish.

Outstanding performance from a great conductor and highly talented orchestra..... they played in a way that was more English than English can be... how did they do it? Living in the UK I have heard this this many times, but never as good as this. Bravo
I find myself watching this in its entirety over and over. I never knew the Warsaw Philharmonic was so good. I wish I could but Blu-Ray videos of their performances but I’m not seeing any. What a discovery for me.

I'm at a loss for words to describe the stunning beauty of this performance. The players are all so deep into making this the finest interpretation of the Enigma Variations. I've played this numerous times, and often I'll begin to play it as background music while I'm working, but then find myself viewing it instead, because the filming is so "in tune" with the amazing music and performances. Thank you, Warsaw Philharmonic, for not just the heavenly playing of this piece, but for making it available for everyone to enjoy. Just stunning. (I wish there was a recording of this performance!!)
Oh, the beautiful melancholy of this masterpiece! It transports us, as it were, to a different world, another time, when gallantry and nobility were paramount and honesty and virtue were rewarded, even though hearts were breaking. I love it so.
I'm writing an essay on this whole piece. The theme's conflicting emotion, Nimrod's cathartic and passionate swells... Thank you Edward Elgar, Warsaw Philharmonic and Jacek the conductor, for bringing tears to my eyes and reminding me why I chose to study music. This is what music does, it heals. Crying in the midst of writing an essay calls for some good writing.

Timeless music. Well done by Warsaw orchestra. Thank you Elgar for creating such beautiful music. I am 39 I have been listening to Elgar since my early 20s.

I notice that I commented on this two years ago . It’s still wonderful and I selected this recording above all others because I knew that the Poles would understand Elgar . I live on the Malvern Hills , near to Elgar’s birthplace and everywhere else that inspired his music , and I am aware daily of this connection.

I now forget how many times I've listened to this magnificent performance. Having a wide selection of most of Beethoven's Mozart's Dvorak's Chopin and many other composers, for some reason I love Enigma Variations. Maybe it is because of this performance by the Warsaw Philharmonic. I now know the faces of so many performers... noble people. Dedicated to music. Now five years ago. Every time I hear it and see it I wonder how those people are managing. Is Jacek Kasprzyk still there? The others? I wish you all well.

In the Nimrod variation, the section between 18:47 and 18:53 is truly spectacularly done. It's amazing how much emotion can be packed into six seconds of music. I have never heard a better rendition (and i have heard a LOT)
The climax at 18:50 is as close to perfect as I am likely to ever hear. No other conductor comes close. (Only God's Philharmonic can do it better - maybe....)

Yes, IMO the Warsaw Philharmonic is possibly the most underrated orchestra in Europe. At their best with the outstanding conducting of Jacek Kaspszyk (who I heard in London conducting an unforgettable "In the South" overture) they yield almost nothing to the more famous philharmonics of Vienna and Berlin.
@@paullewis2413 I heard them in the UK a few years ago - fabulous orchestra and on terrific form here - the cello in Variation 12 is sublime.
Perhaps this fine combination of orchestra and conductor could get t0ogether with cellist Johannes Moser and
perform the haunting rarely heard Cello Concerto by the late George Lloyd - surely the perfect modern successor
to the famous Elgar work for the same instrument. Maestro Kaspszyk should also do us the honour of a
performance of Lloyd's wonderfully turneful 5th Symphony and allow the music the breath of inspired music
making from this committed top rank European ensemble that so clearly has the measure of fine British music.
Just found this. It is really great. Excellent precision and ensemble. Great delay and milking of rubatos...but not overly sentimental. I love how a Polish group has captured the English sensibility so well!!!!! Love this!
