VALERY GERGIEV - MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS 17 DE Febrerro del 2014 - February 17th, 2014 TEATRO SALLE PLEYEL IN PARIS
I was so frightened when I heard this the first time. So sad, frightened, lonely and isolated. I feel the desolation and destruction. I feel the loss. It's brilliant.
Well said. For me, this is his most difficult symphony to listen to, though it is truly magnificent. (Well, this and the 14th) So much pain. I believe that his Fifth was a warm up for the Eighth. The first few minutes of each are very similar, though they diverge completely after that.
An epic, heart-rending and unwavering depiction of war, and truly a worthy "follow-up work" to the famous 7th, the Leningrad Symphony. I first heard it only this past week-end, in a concert streamed from another Russian city, Novosibirsk, together with a chatroom audience mostly of Russians (I know some of them and count them as my friends): it was a really powerful, nuanced performance too and the stark, dramatic images of living through wartime reminded me of "Gates of Delirium" by Yes, another epic, penetrating depiction of war and what it does to people. Yes, this is music that evokes fear, anger, death and pain, battle and resolve...played here in a city that was put to the ultimate test by Hitler and his henchmen, and whose people survived (at least some of them) and fought back to drive out the Fascist intruders.
@@vacuumlover1 Stravinsky (and Prokoviev) are great too, obviously. But the consistency of the perfection of an absolutely masterful work, the culmination of the symphony, the work for chamber music... Schostakovich is definitely the composer of the 20th century.
For the first movement it's like the wars and long winters are looming on me, and almost cannot breathe. Not until the first movement is ended did I take a quick and deep breaths to relieve such stress. Well done
Shostakovich was a symphonic GENIUS. And having to play cat and mouse with the authorities all that time. You could see it on his face later in life. To me, he is the Russian Mahler ❤❤🏆🏆
Third movement especially is terrifying, with whizzing artillery shells, scurrying soldiers, demented bullfight music, and general chaos. Best depiction of HELL in the history of music.
Listening to classical music is a way to connect with history and cultural heritage. I feel like I'm traveling through time when enjoying classical works.
I especially feel that Shostakovich's music takes me through time, the terrifying and horrible but ultimately triumphant time of WWII in the Soviet Union. These heroic people turned the tide for humanity and assured us of ultimately emerging from the darkest depths of class society.
Fantastic realisation of one of the great symphonies of all time. Such a serious work. No wonder the composer called it his "Requiem". Beautifully played by these brilliant people and congratulations to Valery Gergiev for understanding this really exceptional work. Thank you o wonderful people!
Unless it is his own 4th or 10th symphonies (to complete the triptych of extreme range of emotions, technical demands on the players and impact on the committed listener).
I think it is impossible to say which 20th century symphony is the greatest. There are simply too many to pick just one. However, I am convinced that no greater symphony has been composed by anyone and that its equals are very few.
Power, emotion, eloquence and sensitivity....a stunning performance that is enthralling from start to finish....many thanks to the uploader for sharing !
💙 💙 💐 💐 🎵 Bravo. We are blessed to have this performance, Haitink's 1983 Concertgebouw recording and several other sublime performances of this symphony, which in my view is Shostakovich's greatest work.
romance is not the right word. I would say instead that there is physicality, emotion, in short, Gergiev experiences this music by feeling it on him, while Haitink is a freezer, an iceberg, like everything he performed. If anything, Gergiev can be compared with the legend Kondrashin
@@fabio-yl7md You are right. There is no romance here. The only emotion in this monumental work is terror. The brutality of the Soviet system laid bare for all to see (hear).
@@tonylee5538 I don't think there is much romance either, but I would say terror is not even the dominating emotion most of the time. Unless we speak of the existential kind...
This symphony simply isnt talked about enough P.s. Weirdly, I've found that it's one of my favourite pieces of music to consciously work out/excericise to. Wonder if I will continue to do so in the future
Une tension extrême ; la peur les hurlements Un champ de bataille dévasté des corps partout fracassés et qui finit comme un requiem et du recueillement 😮
Shostakovich wrote this symphony about terrors from Nazism and Fascism- celebrating an Axis Power by putting the Italian national anthem in there makes no sense
A bad guy listens to this in Back Blast, The Gray Man novel number 5, while he's planning on how to find The Gray Man to kill him. What he doesn't know is The Gray Man is watching him through his window..
All the horror of war depicted in a symphony. The greatest composition of the wretched 20 th century.
I was so frightened when I heard this the first time. So sad, frightened, lonely and isolated. I feel the desolation and destruction. I feel the loss. It's brilliant.
That's probably why Kevin Reynolds used it in his Movie Fandango (with Kevin Costner) in the scene where Judd Nelson's parachute doesn't deploy.

the intensity of the first movement is mentally exhausting

Best composer of the 20th century. IMO
It’s a tie between him and Stravinsky for me

Stravinsky
20th century is Stravinsky for me.
1:06 - I. Adagio
29:27 - II. Allegretto
35:44 - III. Allegro non troppo
41:45 - IV. Largo
52:44 - V. Allegretto
Legend and Masterwork, Shostakovich with Symphony no. 8 has composed One of best Symphony of all times🤩🌹
I wrote every essay of my university days listening to this symphony. That power and that tension drove me.
Same! This, 5th and 10th, and 8th and 15th quartets! So many sleepless nights with Shostakovich. How are you doing now?
The timpani kicking in at 41:20 is the most powerful drop of all time!
No one directs Shostakovich's #8 like Gergiev, what feeling and intelligence.
Mravinsky is the best oif the best!!
@@eugenianeznanova7891 I agree, Gergiev’s is very much built on it though

One of the geatest masterworks ever. Excellent orchestra and conductor! Just amazing and breathtaking.
Great, Legend , this Symphony is Requiem

No amount of deceitful propaganda can ever erase what happened there.
You’re so right. It was a time of absolute chaos internally and externally, and yet they still persevered.

The first movement must rank as one of the most emotionally intense musical statements put to paper.
This orchestra is THE BEST!! Each member plays so precise.
Akárhányszor hallgatom, de néha kihagyok napokat, hogy megint nagyon örüljek neki. Köszönöm.
So powerful. Represents the suffering and death of Stalingrad. What a nightmare.
Good Lord, this has always been my favorite Shosti Symphony!!!
Same! With Shosty's 11th coming a close second
Un cadeau exceptionnel.
Quel bonheur tant pour la musique, l’interprétation, que pour la vidéo. Merci Merci merci
Probably the greatest 20th century symphony ever composed!
Is 'ever composed' really necessary? 🙂
@@grandepittore I'd leave out '20th century' too

You are quite right. It sounds like only one cello.
I play bassoon and flute, and never got the opportunity to perform this work. It's my favorite! So powerful!
Download score parts, practice, play video and play along. That's what I do.
