There was quite a lot of "throw-away" music in Sergei's day as well. Don't sell *all* modern music short. While it's difficult to tell which music will stand the test of time, I can see bands like Dream Theater or Kansas having a following into the future.
Antonio Pappano. There aren't the words to express what a genius he is. He really brings out the strife and emotion of Rachmaninov's love for his Country, written in this gorgeous music, so that even a twit like me can understand it. Best performance out there. ❤
One of the greatest symphonies ever composed! I've been fortunate enough to have played it many times as a first horn - most recently earlier this year - and have conducted this masterpiece as well and I've lost count of the number of times I've heard it. I still remember when, as a teenager, my late father brought home André Previn's now famous recording of the full version with the LSO on vinyl and it blew my head off. The sheer emotion of the first and third movements and the joy of the Scherzo - second movement - and Finale made such an impact then, as it still does now - almost 50 years later. Good to see Tony Pappano and the Dresden orchestra give such a powerful performance. Thanks for posting this.
My son, a double bass player, will be playing this along with the rest of the York University Symphony Orchestra next week, and we're going along to watch - we can't wait - two very proud parents!
but why does he go round like a snake charmer so much? i prefer the clarinetist from Radio Filharmonisch Orkest with Eivind Gullberg Jensen as the conductor. more sincere and better interaction with the bassoon.
I have practically no formal knowledge of classical music. But it doesn't prevent me from being deeply moved by it and have my soul soothed in an oral bath of harmonies and melodies
There is no way to over-emphasize how great this is. I keep coming back to it, I'm sure over a dozen times by now. Together, this work and this performance is THE definition of music.
Pappano seems to be one of the few conductors that understands that this symphony needs good momentum so as not to become over sentimental. Paul Kletski has always been my benchmark and Pappano comes very close. Wonderful!
I wish people didn’t forget the Second movement…it’s so wonderful!!! The whole symphony is amazing; this performance makes it shine even more. Thank you so much for giving us this music.
I have never before heard any finer clarinet. The note changes are so silky smooth. He is phenomenal!! What a pleasure to listen to . . . clear and beautiful!
Good to point out. It's very hard to control breath like that. Also, please listen to the Charles Gerhardt recording of A Place in the Sun. That is the finest example of concert sax playing I've ever heard. Stunning breath control.
The third movement is certainly beautiful in its gut-wrenching kind of way, but nothing beats the fourth movement with all its orchestral complexity and emotional power, with the string section's relentless pursuit of sublimation and the wind section's haunting punctuation between resolution and struggle. As a life-long admirer of Rachmaninov, this performance is one of the best I've heard, but in terms of TH-cam uploads, this is the best version I've seen.
I have been listening the piano concerto N 2 for a couple of years, recently, I discovered this symphony and I can say, rachmanininoff's works are amazing. This one is another of my favorites now.

Although mainly known by his piano concertos I always thought his symphonies (mainly the 2nd but not forgetting the other two) were musically much more complex and rewarding to listen to. I always get goose bumps with this 2nd and must have heard it untold times. Only thing...it has to be played with lots of passion and by a very good and large orchestra to show its real colors.
Wow!! What a performance of this magnificent symphony. Rachmaninoff was true master. Bravo to all the players!! And what a masterful conductor -- he certainly relates to the huge repressive moments.
One of the best performances of one of my favorite symphonic works. Adagio was A M A Z I N G...I love the tempo and the focus on dynamics. The clarinetist delivered a magnificent and "well-sung" performance. Bravi tutti!!!
I believe the clarinetists is Robert Oberaigner. The sort of playing you expect from someone who played as a substitute with the Vienna Philharmonic at a 17!
Without a doubt, a masterpiece of the symphonic repertoire of late romanticism! The glorious magnificence of this music is highlighted in this masterful performance... overflowing with mystery, drama, passion, lyricism, melancholy and poetic bombast! This extraordinary symphony inspires and moves with its beautiful themes... it makes us vibrate and tremble with emotion! It is a brilliant musical work: exquisitely orchestrated; and finely constructed in a masterly way, between soft and powerful pulses, with calm and vigorous rhythms! I take my hat off and bow to this wonderful orchestra, under the baton of this fabulous conductor... great job! Definitely: an artistic experience out of the ordinary... simply sublime! Braaavooo, Master Rachmaninoff!
This adage is so beautiful, it enchants me! Every piece is so interconnected, it guides us to this ending that takes our breath away! Splendid presentation
This is the best interpretation of this much loved symphony I have heard in recent memory. He really manages to pull out all the complex harmonies of Rachmaninoff's writing. The orchestra is extremely responsive. The conductor takes over as Principal Conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra this year- lucky them and lucky us!! Brilliant.
My favorite symphonic piece. While listening to it with my eyes closed, images and moving scenes were forming in my mind, making a one great masterpiece. Thank you, Mr. Rachmaninov, Staatskapelle and Mr. Pappano! Sending love from the Philippines. 🇵🇭❤️

Superb orchestrations and touching melodic passages, and of course the outstanding Staatskapelle Dresden's performance and the conductor's emotive baton. Thanks for share this amazing concert. It is simply fantastic, I had already heard other Operas but this one in particular is amazing, Rachmaninoff is really incredible; in true most Russian classical composers are unbelievably very good, as well as Rinsky, Tchaikovski, and others Russian classical composers.

Very moving and balanced. I love this symphony. the conductor is excellent. The mouth movement adds an element that is harmony with his hands. He is expressing himself in non-verbal way. There can be many components to communication and this conductor is taking advantage of the "lips movement" to interject what he feels to members of the orchestra. When I was 13 my mother's friend took me to the Royal Albert Hall to hear classical music. I've no memory of which piece. That became a regular event. Throughout the years we saw Hairstyle competitions, Bob Dillon, The Royal Symphony Choir and many others. Love the contrabasses positioned behind the first violins. Something not widely practiced in modern orchestras. But a standard for this orchestra. Adds sparkle to the tuning.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing this. Is it just me or does it seem like Rach could get an enormous amount of sound out of an orchestra? You'd think the brass was 10x larger, but it's standard, etc. Genius orchestrator.
Holy cow, how great Staatskapelle sounds. What a string section. For me they are over Berlin Phil at this moment. More good orchestras for Germany at this moment but this one is among the best.

First time hearing this piece randomly on Spotify, I thought it was a soundtrack of romance movie, but its turn out more romantic than romance movies. The third movement makes you think that you're falling in love with someone
Tempos kept crisp, he prevented it from dragging, a trap many conductors fall into with this piece. Emphasis on the dynamics are how I have imagined it in my head and have wished someone would do. He did. Best reading since Ormandy.
I judge performances of this symphony by one very specific thing: how they approach that big resolving chord in the last movement, just before the strings sing that gorgeous chorale theme again to bring the whole thing to a close. Too many conductors just barrel right past that chord, but Maestro Pappano gets it right! To my ears, he joins Previn and Ashkenazy in this. What a wonderful performance!
@@spfqr4977 It lands right about the 56:17 mark, the big tonic chord that rounds out the preceding build before the soaring melody recapitulates. It's a tricky spot: you can't ritard the tempo too much and you certainly can't impose a fermata where none is indicated in the score, but the arrival on that chord is such a moment of release that it really bothers me when most conductors just blast right past it.
Ashkenazy and Previn have the greatest recordings of the piece and you're totally right that Pappano commands it with the same level of magic. In particular, I feel like he conducts it like a giant opera score, which gives it so much vibrancy and drama!

Pappano is among a long list of Italian conductors that can really understand and conduct one of the many incredible great symphonies from russian composers....it's like Italian and Russian music souls are somehow connected.
Sweet voices or luscious sounds remind me of trying to dub those into a lot of beautiful landscapes contents I have already shot. When such melodious sounds meet scenic landscapes, moving your heart and soul will unquestionably elevate and support emotional quotient! This introductory part of symphony is just like that!
The wonderful performance aside, I recommend all who have the opportunity to visit the Semperopern. It is just awe inspiring. The 10th visit is just as amazing as the 1st.
I had the good fortune to watch the maestro conduct this live with the Philadelphia Orchestra over a decade ago and bought his recording with St. Cecilia. I was eager to hear the Staatskapelle Dresden with tis rich burnished tone play this. Thank you very much. I really hope I get the chance to hear the orchestra live and soon.
Russia has incredible musical training among its high arts, also known for greatest ballet and great literature. Rachmaninoff had excellent theoretical knowledge as well as being a gifted intuitive musician.
I must have a fetish for 2nd Symphonies! I adore Brahms 2nd, Borodin's 2nd, and *THIS ONE* When I became an avid classical music fan in 1973, I learned this piece through the unabridged version. *SO* happy to hear this one complete!
Russia was very chaotic at time this symphony was composed, strikes, riots, military mutiny, etc. this beautiful music was a nice break from all that madness.
Do we think people will be listening to Cardi B in 100 years? Timeless, classical music is so amazing.

Maravilhosa apresentação, sempre incrível e deslumbrante.
Thank you very much for this great concert!!!
Greetings from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦
The adagio is the most beautiful piece ever.
The best performances are on this channel. thank you for being so beautifulThe best performances are on this channel. thank you for such beautiful music.
Pappano is among a long list of Italian conductors that can really understand and conduct one of the many incredible great symphonies from russian composers....it's like Italian and Russian music souls are somehow connected.
Einfach wundervoll!
was denn sonst!
Melancholia is what makes this symphony so great. Nothing wrong with that, I like melancholic feelings.
Had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful venue a couple of weeks back. The sound was sublime.
That sublimity seems to be reflected in this recording.
Sweet voices or luscious sounds
remind me of trying to dub those into a lot of beautiful landscapes contents I have already shot.
When such melodious sounds meet scenic landscapes, moving your heart and soul will unquestionably elevate and support emotional quotient!
This introductory part of symphony is just like that!
dime cuando podras venir siestas bien
EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. THANKYOU VERY MUCH
The wonderful performance aside, I recommend all who have the opportunity to visit the Semperopern. It is just awe inspiring. The 10th visit is just as amazing as the 1st.
EXTRAORDINARIAMENTE MAGNÍFICA. GRATIDÃO INFINITA; ALÉM DO SÉTIMO SENTÍDO.
👍
This is what a concert hall for classical music should look like! 😎🎹
Rachmaninov’s contribution is immeasurable.
43:18 This part crushes my soul for some reason. It sounds like a farewell 😢
Composer 👏 Orchestra 👏 Conductor 👏
Thanks DW Classical Music. Obrigado do Brasil
We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Excelente Performance 👍 Emoção demais, todas as vezes !!!👏👏👏👏👏🌺🙏

Musica inquieta, affascinante,a tratti struggente e malinconica, sempre evocativa, coinvolgente. Magico Rachmaninov! Ottima esecuzione.
Russia was very chaotic at time this symphony was composed, strikes, riots, military mutiny, etc. this beautiful music was a nice break from all that madness.
