I think what makes it great is all the passing tones he throws in there as he moves through the chords. It just feels like the bass is breathing, or perhaps sighing.

Duran Duran came into music and really made sound for themselves. When Rio came out I was playing lead guitar in a hair metal band. My band mates didn't get it. I had been secretly listening to Bowie and Roxy Music. When I heard Hungry like a Wolf I went right out and bought the album.
One the most underrated bands of all time. And underestimated for their ability to play live. Real musicians and Simon Le Bon can really sing. Simply a great bad.
I remember been in the beach in Puerto Rico back in the 80s and this song was playing on a radio (loud) and all the pretty girls walking on the beach!!!
Nicely executed! What's even more impressive is how fantastic Duran Duran is today. I saw their recent Austin City Limits concert and it was as if no time had passed at all. I was surprised that Le Bon's voice was really strong after years of wear and tear. Maybe it's genetics? I hope the band continues to perform as long as they have the desire to.
