Mack R Model Semi Truck Has a Bad Day - Fan Hits Radiator and Battery Issues

This 1977 R Model Mack has been hard to start. We clean up the battery cables and make a few tweaks. Then it comes back with a damaged radiator. Follow along as I repair the radiator, reseal the timing cover, and replace the front main seal.

This truck owner doesn't know how lucky he is to have you as his mechanic. Who else would go the extra mile,,, 400 miles,,, to make sure he got his truck back in a reasonable amount of time. Another shop would have taken months, if they would fix it at all. No one else would have taken the time to research the parts like you did. Great job my man. I just wish there was a mechanic near me as good as you.

Dont quote me but I believe this is his dad truck. But nonetheless whether its family or not I wholeheartedly believe from watching Wes' work ethis that he treats everyone like family so not one person receives higher treatment than the other.
If I would only be able to live a couple thousand miles closer i absolutely would not have a problem with paying an "up front retainer" to wes so he'd always be my go to mechanic! He's definitely top notch as far as I'm concerned!!

A little "Mack History". I you have a gold Bulldog on the hood that is considered a "Petagree " truck. Which means it's all Mack. The Engine, Transmission, and rear differentials are all Mack components. If your Bulldog is silver, then you have a "Curb Stone Setter" which means your truck is made up of a mix of drive train components. Just a blast from the past. .

You are more right than you even know lol. Double edged sword with that. Once farmers have a guy that does it all and that they can trust, they won't take it anywhere else, for anything and they will tell everyone else about him and then all the other farmers will send their stuff to him. Which is both good and bad. Money is good, but they can also be misers and if you only rely on the farmers, once you have a dry spell and need other work, there isn't any because you're always turning other work away to cater to the farmers. Because you NEVER turn away a farmer in need. Once you do, you likely won't see them again.

I drove Mack trucks for over 30 years and after checking fluid levels under the hood you fired it up and let it idle for a minimum of 1 minute so you had lube oil flowing everywhere then you rev it up to kick in the alternator. A Mack is one of the best trucks I ever drove local or over the road. Started out on a B-81 ten wheel dump 5th gear high split 47 MPH. It was one of 200 trucks built for the 1964 worlds fair in NYC. 160 horsepower thermadyne engine no turbo. Last was a 1986 Triaxle with a 400 horsepower and a Allison 6 speed automatic.
I’ll take a Mack any day even the one you’re working on.

Having worked on classic British andItalian sports cars, I know the pain of struggling with parts that aren't available, and are wrong when they do turn up; had to smile when that front main seal was wrong.
The advantage of the sports cars is that they are never someone's only car. They're so shiny you're afraid to go near them with tools though.

That's the same thing they probably told themselves when they bought the truck decades ago. And you know what? They never planned for the manufapturer to either stop production numbers once they came up with different platforms.
You can't possibly this naive to think that just because you have parts availability now, you'll have them tomorrow. Always, always, buy parts whilst you can. Gaskets and seals are you primo stocking inventory. If your equipment doesn't have at least 10 to 20 years worth of critical inventory in your shed, then you're just the kind of guy they easily prey on and make the most money from.
And this isn't even the freaking computerized era yet, we're still in the ignition wire to the battery era, wait until you'll be forced by the market play to buy computerized only, land they'll play the same game then, and you'll see how a 500 dollar repair - work man hours turns into 2k dollar repair and the heartburn that comes with it.

Like UPS is any better.... Doesn't matter who you ship with, they ALL have problems. The more critical or time-sensitive the job and part(s) are, the more likely it is that one of those "problems" will strike and your parts go missing and your job gets held up.

2:35 Not wanting to bust your chops, but you will find your battery terminal spreader pliers will work much easier if you turn them 180 degrees (line up the handles with the cable). The way the pliers pivot, you are trying to spread the back of the terminal opening rather than spreading the open part at the bolt.
I have used dielectric grease for many many years and have had many, many "conversations" about it "insulating" the connections...
