Thanks Ken for the great no BS review, as always you say it like it is, and that means a lot to the photography community! I still love my 5D Mark IV and R6, but one day I will give the R6 ii a try after seeing your review.
I thought about buying a used R6 as people are dumping them cheap but the R6 2 is a huge improvement in so many ways over the original - thanks for the review
The R6 was a very good camera. But if you can swing the R6II or you shoot video, it’s an absolute MUST. Not being able to save custom video settings on the original R6 forced me to part ways with it as soon as this came out. Makes no sense that users can’t save C1-C3 for video at all. Or the fact it can only shoot in manual video or full auto. Just a big head scratch there. The R6II is borderline perfect for nearly everyone. Some users will think they need more resolution, when very few people actually do. I shoot this alongside the R3 and ended up selling one of my R3 bodies after I got this - it’s a VERY excellent camera.
@@KenRockwellTV Wow, that's amazing! But Canon should have launched this camera at the same time as Sony released the a7III, then I wouldn't have jump skip. And now I'm too invested in Sony glass.
i’m with you been thinking of getting a used R6 the overheating doesn’t bother me because this camera will be for photos only however, I do have my eyes on the R6 mark ii now that i’m moving more into event photography
Great review as always Ken. I just traded in my Z6 II for this camera and am waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait. While I got some great images on the Z6 II I did feel it got in the way at times as the AF system is workable but a bit behind the curve in its implementation. So seeing your review and hearing that this camera gets out of the way so I can focus on composition is very reassuring. Keep up the great work. I've learned a lot from your videos over the last few years and can't thank you enough.
I agree with so much with what you said, incredible easy to use camera. I started photography with R50 a year ago and realise I really enjoy it and upgraded to full frame 3 weeks ago. Naturally I gravitated to the R6 mkii coz of the ibis, I would have preferred the size of the R8 but lack of ibis stopped me. I am extremely happy with my R6 mkii and I’m thrilled a pro photographer with years of experience like yourself have such high praises for it. The vertical image can be viewed vertically as shot on the LCD, the setting needs to be changed in the menu settings under the yellow tab with the spanner 🔧 icon, tab #1 choose Auto Rotate for the computer icon only. Then the vertical imagine will fill up the whole screen in camera display.
Hi ken, I have read so many of your reviews and today I discovered that you have a TH-cam channel. It's really fun to discover the voice of the person who wrote all these articles. I think I'm going to have an intensive viewing session of your videos.
Thanks for including the HDR and focus stacking examples. My R3 will do that but I had never tried it thinking it would be "too fiddly" and "doing it for real" would require external software to do it right. These two examples showed it working extremely well on-scene, in camera. Canon consumers are lucky, by the way, in that Canon distributes many of its software innovations across the pro platforms, regardless of price tier, as they develop them.
Hi ken, I have followed you since 2011. I was on the fence, about pulling the trigger on the Canon R6 mark II. Going from a Canon 7D mark II. You sir, answered all my questions. Also, DP review had a good column written on the Canon R6 mark II. 👍
Thanks for this. I will check out your website, too. Considering this V the R8 for my non pro needs FWIW. EDIT: Fantastic feast for the eyes those pics. Being able to showcase your skill V some TH-camr picking holes in work from others whilst not big on showing their own is a difference. I appreciate your skill. Cheers
R8 takes the same pictures. Huge difference is that the R6 II has all the controls you need while the R8 is so tiny it’s missing a lot of controls seasoned users will miss. You can make the same shots with each, just it takes a lot more clicks in the R8
I got a great deal on the R6 on black friday, and I can confirm it has the auto subject tracking available. :) Edit - Sorry, it is not, I was confused with AF tracking settings vs AF detection settings. Tracking sensitivity auto is available, but not auto subject detection.
this was very helpful, im a beginner and have been wanting to be a photographer for a long time and im going to school for it in the summer and i was researching cameras and i found your review video and i want to thank you.
This R6 II really is my favorite camera over anything else I’ve ever used for general photography. See also my users guide for tricks specific to it www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-r6-ii-users-guide.htm and of course my full written review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm Thanks!!!!!!
Saw your excellent R5 video too, and I am now torn between R5 and r6m2. due to limited budget. which would you choose? Used R5 with cheaper lense rf50.8m and 24-105 or new R6m2+ rf50.2 and rf 28 pancake. They cost about same at arouns total $450 here in S. Korea.
Thank you for this video review and mini tutorial. I just purchased an R6 MKII and I have no regrets. Coming from a 90D & 5D MKIV user, the R6 MKII is simply amazing. I still use and love my DSLRs but this mirrorless hybrid is on another level. I can use 3 types of Canon lenses on it; RF, EF, & EF-S (adapted). Hopefully Canon will allow for 3rd party RF lenses but for me I’m good being able to adapt my older lenses. Some of my EF & EF-S STM lenses are on another level with the R6MKII. The STM focus motor has no trouble keeping up with the R62’s autofocus. The glass is good enough to meet my needs. I understand no 3rd party lenses is a nonstarter for some pros but for me, I’m good with Canon’s ecosystem as it is. Thanks again - wishing you and your family a safe & blessed holiday season
I have EOS R and R7. I use R for landscape still with RF 14-35 F4L and EOS R7 with RF24-105 F4L for action. I was thinking of trading the R for the R6 mark ii. How is the build quality between the 2 cameras ? Does not the R have more magnesium alloy? Since i print very large, I think that 30 vs 24 megapixels will have a substantial hit on the PPI. How does the Auto White balance compare between the 2 cameras? Above all, I appreciate the correct Auto White balance. I don't really remember what where the exact colors of sunrise in Iceland in 2019. I like to go back to the original RAW files and see what it really looked like. Thanks a lot !
Megapixels don’t matter. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm there’s only a 12% difference in dpi at the same print size which is completely invisible!!!
Thank you for the response. I did more research. The upgrade does not justify the price, not for my needs. I will just wait for the R5 mark ii. That will be a real upgrade. Besides, I hate the autofocus on my R7 and that autofocus is supposed to be better than on R6 mark ii. I also like the grip much better on the R than on R7 (I own both).
R6 mk II is on Christmas sale for $1,999 through the 17th I believe. I’d get one now while you can. Please use the links in my description or at my review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm , that’s what supports me. Thanks!
Fantastic review, I need to set my C1/2/3 settings to the exact ones you have and then do a few customizations for my own shooting because it sounds like you have it dialed in super well. Too bad it does not let you save and recall that data to a downloadable file, it sounds like an oversight and hopefully Canon releases a firmware update to address if they get enough feedback...this is a professional grade camera!
Thanks Ken, just found your channel as I was after information on the R6ii that I’ve just purchased, having given my wife my six month old R7 (lucky girl). Subscribed and will be looking to see any of your other R6ii guides that you have.
R6 II has a bigger grip and bigger overall size and many more controls than R7. Get R7 for birds or anything where you need the strongest telephoto effect possible and the R6 II for everything else. R7 is unique in having the worlds only self leveling feature, otherwise the r6 II is superior unless you prefer the smaller sensor. Both OM are quite light and portable. Full reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r7.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm thanks!!
I think you'll find the R6II has around 1.5 stops better high ISO performance and also better DR. What do you want to shoot should be driving your buying decision. If you're thinking of wildlife and/or birds, then the R7 may be an attractive idea due to the 1.6x crop. Note that the R6II is only 24mp too, which quite often, for smaller birds or birds that are a distance away, is just not enough. More pixels on the bird(s) is always desirable. I have a R3 and R10 and I really wish Canon had done a pro APS-C MLC right, rather than the crappy effort that was the R7. Poor button UI, no battery grip, poorer high ISO performance than it really should have. Very poor sensor readout speed, so big issues with rolling shutter. A R4 in a R3 body with a 26mp BSI stacked APS-C sensor would have been lovely and I'd have bought it over the R3. Canon's decisions have been very poor in the MLC era imho.
Just bought this for my wife (second shooter) for weddings and events. It's very impressive, but I do find that the highlights are not as easy to recover as my old EOSR that I traded in. So we'll have to watch out for that.
Love your reveiw. Q./ When shooting video on the R6 MkII at max resolution how long before the camera overheats and what is the battery life in video mode.? You mention no auto rotation, so which Canon mirror-less model introduces this feature.? How good is the image stabilizer for handheld with 400mm lens?
Sticked with 5DSR for last 5 years. Any reason to swap to R6 II ? Most of shots for real estate, or virtual tours 360. Rarely weddings, report photographer.
Pictures will be the same. R6 II lets us see and magnify everything through the finder easily, even in direct sunlight. It’s all about having an electronic finder vs just a little screen on the back. Thanks!
The price just dropped on the R6 2 body to $1999! I'm ready to upgrade from the R6 and my only hesitation is the R5 2 that will be announced this month. I'm struggling and would appreciate any advice you can offer. Do you have any sense of how long the sale price on the R6 2 will last?? Love your photographs, reviews and advice!
Yes! I track prices of every camera over time at my reviews, and as you can read at my R6 II review at kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm#price today's price is the lowest its' ever been, matching the pre-Christmas sale price that was only once before seen from 7-16 Dec 2023. Get the R6 II; I've never liked the R5 controls and we've been waiting for an R5 Mk II for like a year now. Don't wait up late for an R5 II and no one ever knows how long today's price will last. Thanks for supporting my work by using the links in my reviews (and in the description here) to get yours; that's my biggest source of support. THANKS!!!
Have you ever had a problem with freezing where it just stops and does nothing, it won’t even turn off? You have to remove the batteries to get past this.
If that happens, its an issue with the lens. See my reviews where I test each lens for this www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/index.htm. For instance, the RF 100-300/2.8L www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/100-300mm.htm immediately zips between the closest focus distance and infinity; I can't recall any lenses having this problem offhand on the EOS-R system. It used a be a problem with macro lenses, but not anymore on Canon. Thanks!
Ken, great video. I did not know the R6mk2 processed photo stacking in camera. I was considering the OM-1 for that very reason. Again thanks, I have been listening to you for years and don't feel like you have steered me wrong so thanks again.
I've been debating whether to upgrade from the R6 to the R6 Mk II for ages. Your review has tipped the balance, so an order will be going in soon :) Just holding fire until the post Christmas sales.
Look out, the $1,999 price expires Dec 17 2023. I’d get it now. You can see price history towards the end of my specifications section at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm#spex and please use the links in my review to get yours; it’s what funds all I do. Thanks!
Ken, I noticed that when you showed samples of your favorite R6 Mk 2 photos that the lenses used in all were EF lenses with an EF - RF adapter. Is this because you prefer the old EF lenses (as I do) or a different reason? I’ve tried 3 RF lenses and sold them in short order as my EF equivalent lenses were sharper or as sharp …and they are already paid for.
Like most people, I already own everything in EF. Personally today I prefer the RF 14-35/4L and RF 24-240mm, and if I need longer I pull out my EF 100-400 L II on the adapter that lives on it and I’m covered. Unlike Nikon, EVERYTHING Canon has made since 1987 works PERFECTLY on the R cameras, so no need for new lenses unless you want them. Thanks!
R5 II is at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r5-ii.htm and still under construction. I’m working on it the rest of this month. YT video only comes after I’m done and are merely summaries.
@KenRockwellTV awesome! I read all your content but love your sultry voice overs where we get a lot more nuance. For example, your D780 Livestream helped me tremendously
Yet another great review! Been shooting professionally with Canon cameras since 2010, and the 1Ds Mk3 took over half a million images, still going strong, as mine 5DmkIV... I bought an R7 2 years ago, and shutter died after 50.000. I bought R6 last year, and shutter died couple of months later, got it replaced under warranty, and after 70.000 images it died again last month, so I bought used R6 as a backup, and this one is dying as well now.... I never experienced anything like it. Actually considering selling them again, and get the R6 MkII, or even R5, as its gets cheaper these days. I dont need the best, the newest, but I like when things work, and these new cameras seem a bit fragile I think, compared to 1Ds & 5D series.
@@KenRockwellTV Hey Ken, it is indeed! See, the thing with the R6 is, which I found out after buying it, is that in AEB mode the electronic shutter is not available, in the R7 it is. As i shoot real estate and plenty images a day, Im now considering the R6 mkII, the 20-24mp is ideal, as I need fast workflow, and is plenty allready. Still, I got two R6 for same money as one R6mk2, and since I shoot weddings from time to time, 2-3 bodies are preferable. Tough decisions ;-)
Kind of curious about the R6 MII paired with an RF 24-105 mm L F/4 lens? I saw your review of the 24-105 f4 lens at your website, but it was on the R5. I saw your review of the 24-105 F4-7.1. More interested in the L/f4 versionAny thoughts?
Hi Katie! It works GREAT on the R6 II!!!! All the lenses and bodies in the EOS R system work great with each other. The 24-105 f/4L IS USM is a bigger, heavier, better-built lens for serious use and is magnificent on the R6 II, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm.htm. The RF 24-105 IS STM is a very light weight and also super-sharp lens, with superb stabilization, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm. I'd get the STM if weight or price matters, and I'd get the f/4L if sensitively in low light at the 105mm end or physical toughness was more important. Honestly I prefer the RF 24-240mm for its longer range www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm, but you didn't ask that. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks again. I picked up the 24-105 f/4. Definitely well-built and a high quality lens. I was a little surprised that the RF 70-200 mm f/4 is a hair lighter. Trying to decide the 70-200 f/4 vs 2.8 right now. I can get an RF 70-200 f/2.8 for 2399 out the door. Great deal, great lens, but heavier than the f/4 version. It comes down to lugging a 16 oz soda bottle around in extra weight when comparing the f/2.8 version with the f/4 version of the 70-200 lens.
@@KatieF307 I'd go f/4. f/2.8 was mostly back in film days when we had to work at ISO 100 for the best results. Actually as I said I'd go RF 24-240mm so I don't have to change lenses, but that wasn't your question. I'd go f/4: full reviews of all these are at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/index.htm Thanks! Be sure to use any of my approved sources if you're in the USA for the best service. www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores
@@KenRockwellTV Yeah, I am sold on the 24-105 f/4. Still struggling with that 70-200 question. The weight comes down to feeling like lugging around a full soda can when using the 2.8. I am amazed at how well the R6 MK II does with high ISO. No matter what I decide, I will like what I am carrying. The R6 is my first Canon, and first mirrorless. I still have my D850 and have no plans to ditch my Nikon gear. Heck, I still have my D810 on the shelf and that was a workhorse. I do find that the RF 70-200 f/4 is a half-pound lighter than my old Nikon 70-200 f/4 lens. Thanks for the recommendations and the review videos. I hope you and Dave Wyman do another Barstow Route 66 trip next year. I saw that on your site, but I could not swing the trip this year. I have taken some great photos out that way in the past.
Ken Rockwell ..will you ever review Panasonic L mount cameras ? They have been out 5 years now.. the S1, S1R, S1H, S5, S5 II, S5 IIX .. with nary a mention on your site.
Yeah, I wish it had the R3 EVF which is HDR...the OVF simulation setting is still there but without HDR like in the R3 it's not really as good or enjoyable.
I've had the R6II for about a year now, and my sole gripe with it isn't even necessarily its fault. It's still not supported by Lightroom for tethering. Adobe claims they rely on drivers from the manufacturer to add software support. This means that either Canon has been sitting on drivers (which should be nearly identical to the R6), or Adobe has the driver they need, and just haven't added the support yet. In either case, it should't have taken a year+ to add tethering support. For studio photographers, whether that be portraits, products, etc... this is a big feature to be missing. Any chance you can make some noise and get the ball rolling?
This is what I wanted to hear, thank you! I can’t stand listening to these kids, my kids ages, who say they’ve been shooting for 10 years. I’ve been in love with cameras and photography for the same amount of time as you… I commandeered somebody’s 110 when I was about 8. 8 years later in 1982, my parents finally took my obsession seriously and bought me a beautiful Minolta 35mm. Unfortunately that’s where they stopped taking it seriously and when I wanted to go to school for it, told me being a photographer was a hobby, not a career!🙄 I was defeated. Not anymore though, now that my kids are grown and I finally have money to myself, I’m getting the R6 II, as soon as I have enough saved.😅 I’ve shot Nikon and Canon and much prefer the latter!
Same images, probably same sensor, while this camera has a bigger body with more controls and a bigger battery. R8 is for bicycle touring and backpacking where weight is everything; this camera is for serious all day shooting.
@@KenRockwellTV tough call, but I much prefer the first option having the controls is more enjoyable than fighting for them, but I do understand cutting a toothbrush in half to save the weight in my backpack, where does the r7 fall in here, is it possible to be a nice compliment for either of them? Thank you for sharing your joy with us
It's all about having all the controls I need. R8 works great, but it's so small it has no room for all the dials and buttons I use, making it slower to set with the menus.
What are your thoughts now the r5ii is out? Here in Australia the price is close to double.. Can you see any reason to need to pay do much more for the r5ii over this? Thanks!
@@skyscraperfan Heif is already 10 bits. (Jpeg is 8 bits). Why is it disappointing? RAW is actually a waste of time, effort and space. 12-bits or 14-bits RAW are being AI converted by Adobe software to Adobe 16-bits color. But the best large format color printer of HD color monitor is only 10-bits (most are 8-bits) so yout images have to be converted back to 8-bits or 10-bits to print or display.
@@skyscraperfan YOU shouldn't be inserting fake data via Adobe software by arbitrary mapping 12-bits/14-bits to 16-bits color either. Many so called Pros are actually being fooled! Jpeg 8-bits is 256 color shades. BUT HEIF 10-bits is 1024 color shades already. You cannot criticise Jpeg and then reject HEIF.
I am about to buy one next week and I am hesitant about the price of these lens, one RF24105F4L can buy a 24105F4-7.1 and a 100-400F5.6-8. I am a student and I only can use my camera in weekend. I prefer taking some scenery photos... which one I should choose
I'm new on your channel, I've been looking at purchasing a great camera and preferably canon, and you've just convinced me with your video. This is definately the body I want to go with. What's your view on the entree level lens? or should I just buy one separately, cause I also want a telephoto of around 100 - 500mm. Anyway thanks for your awesome review.
Personally I LOVE the RF 24-240mm for everything kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm For a longer tele at a great price and super compact you want the unique RF 100-400mm www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/100-400mm.htm for Ultrawide I prefer the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/14-35mm.htm , however if price matters, the RF 15-30mm IS STM is just as sharp www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/15-30mm.htm THANKS!
AF in R6 II is spectacular. I didn’t compare directly; I do recall being very impressed years ago at how the R5 focussed on dog eyes as they were running around rather than their noses. You can’t go wrong with Canon; I prefer the newer R6 II over the R5.
I found the R5 files to not play as nicely with lightroom in a specific use case of timelapses where noise shows up. While you can do noise reduction- the sheer file sizes make it hell when you have a 900-1300 raw file timelapse to batch process… My older canon R for some strange reason seems to cancel noise more consistently frame to frame in lightroom when you go to view the finoshed timelapse So then it’s do you buy the expensive topaz software for video that reduces noise or do you simply go for the larger pixels and more manageable file sizes of the r6ii? I am leaning on r6ii because everything I sell is limited to 4k 30-60fps
Just trying to share what I know. Big difference is I’m a shooter, NOT a TH-camr. All the TH-camrs have full time employees to shoot videos of them; it’s nearly impossible to get myself on camera since I’m the only one here. Know that since the TH-camrs spend more time talking than shooting what they have to say isn’t that important. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm Also who cares; I want to show the camera close enough so you can see and feel every setting. Thanks!!!!
The best camera is the one that makes your photography easier... thats why i stick with canon not other brands it just works and generate profits for me 😊
Works awesome. Even the older ones worked great. Here’s a test that shows the difference: go into a dark area and see how clear are the finder images. Earlier Nikon finder images just about disappeared trying to shoot outdoors at night. Thanks!
Thanks for video.I shoot only stills. Its 2 yrs aold comapred to thr R5 and know it has a better focusing than R5?Mostly events, editorial, documentary all in stills. So which one should I settle for?R6 Mark 2 or the 4 year old R5.Thanks
R6 II is best camera I’ve ever used, regardless of price. I’d get it unless there’s some weird reason you’d need an R5, and I can’t imagine what that would be
Dear Ken, it wasn't difficult for me to decide the switch from my 60D to R6Mk2(a giant leap indeed 😂😅). Coupled with the RF135f1.8 I am SO happy. Yes, I am also using my old ef 24-105f4 and EF50mm f1.8 with it. The only problem I am encountering with adapted 24-105 is the communication (between lens and body) error, I cleaned the contacts and continued, and again the error occurs. I guess the lens needs a servicing,. 50f1.8 is still fine, with it the error is a bit rare. Theres a lot more for me to exploit with this beast of a camera. Your words have only reinforced my contentment. Thank you Ken.
Wonderful review as usual, Ken. Funnily enough, I just today ordered my R6 II, a few accessories, and the RF 800 f/11. Should get them next week, and really looking forward to it. I've been a happy DSLR user for years, but I'd been thinking about adding a mirrorless to my kit. One thing I was wondering about was if I could use my EF lenses, for example my 100-400 II L, with a 1.4x extender and the EF > RF adapter, on the R6 II, and it was your report on this exact topic that really helped me to make my decision. I opted for the 800 f/11 because as hard as I work to improve my photography skills, there's no way I can justify spending 5 figures on a lens (and my wife would have me locked up). But the f/11, from what I've read, seems like a reasonable way to get that extra reach and good results without breaking the bank.
Hello Ken, thanks for the review, I've upgraded from a canon EOS R, but I have an issue with R6's LCD display, the display appears "cropped" with a large blank border round it, is that normal?
Depends how large, it’s not at all like an iPhone; there is always a black border around the screen and depending on the mode in which it’s working there can be even bigger borders with data and tinier images. See photos of it in my full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/images/r6-ii/back.jpg
Hi Ken what a fantastic review to watch thank you so much I tend to shoot more landscapes than wildlife say 20% would this be good more for landscape many thanks from the uk 🇬🇧 😊
Inspirering comments, Ken. In favour of the Canon EOS R6 Mk II. I guess this camera will be my first mirrorless choice to compliment my trusted Canon Mk IV SLR. Laszlo Montreal
Thanks for this review sir! I have the Mark 1 and have loved the experience inspite of its short comings. With the current discount i am tempted to upgrade, but wanted to verify if its possible to access images on the camera via usb connection using the Canon camera connect app. My workflow usually starts with reviewing images on camera and importing only what I rate. I am hoping with the upgrade i can use the phone app for rating images. Over a wireless connection its a slow experience amd hoping over usb it'll be much faster. Plus the images look better on my phone than the camera's back screen. Thanks 🙏
Haven't tried; if you're in the USA call and ask Canon at (800) OK-Canon. I use Photo Mechanic to sort and select; you can select form the card (and probably the camera if used as the card reader) and then just drag the selected images into your computer, so much faster and easier (for me) than using the tiny screen on the camera. Thanks!
Strange that you can't shoot HDR apart from the default Picture Style settings, when my old Canon 6D DSLR will allow this! Otherwise this looks fantastic - thanks for this and the written review, invaluable as ever.
As someone who has shot digital cameras since 2003, good lord is the ISO ever good these days. I only ever use slow ISO like 100 or lower if I am outside in the bright sun with a lens wide open, otherwise its like who cares up to like ISO 6000
Ken, love your stuff. The 100-400 is on its way and I’m stuck for body. I’ve had a 5D Mk II since it first came out, love the colour and still works great but it’s showing it’s age. I do sport (baseball) and portraiture. I’ve been hanging on for the R5 Mk II which is now in touching distance but this review has made me wonder if it’ll be wasted money. Is it worth waiting for the R5 for portraiture or should I get a 5d mk iv or R6 II which are kinda the same price now…? I also do internet videos but they’d all hack that. Thanks for your time and everything you do. You’re my go to reviewer on all things Canon
The R6 II tracks focus at 40 FPS. Get one, it’s way beyond any DSLR. See the full review and my users guide at my site for much, much more. I wouldn’t wait for any R5; it’s a slower version of the R6. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm
Hello Ken! What a beautiful and helpful content You create! I kindly appreciate what you're doing. I am an hobbyist photographer (do not make videos at all) from Estonia and having a Canon RP camera with only one kit lens 24-105 f/4-7.3, that I don't really like as I'm growing up in photography. I photograph mainly landscape and street. What could you suggest for me for a switch.. I have my eyes on Nikon Z7 II, but I really didn't tried this one out in practice. I really like R6II but I'm thinking about the glass and to me it seems that Canon does provide really expensive (for me) glass (RF 70-200 f/4, RF 14-35 f/4, etc..). Nikon btw has really decent 14-30mm f/4, 24-120 f/4 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 glass at affordable price point. I watch a lot of YT videos about Nikon and Canon cameras what talking about pros and cons of the cameras and I cannot really decide what camera to buy.. one talk about how great Nikon Z7II is and another one talk how bad it is.. and both of them talking about different aspects. I think that Nikon Z8 is great one but it has kinda bigger form factor and you mentioned some of the cons about ergonomics and I stucked at this point.. R5 is also great one (with 45mp) but as I'm an amateur mby it's too pro for me. What I want is to have one camera for 5-6 years what I can shoot with no problems and need for a switch.
Forget Nikon. Doesn’t work anywhere near as well as the Canon. For inexpensive RF lenses, you want the RF 24-240mm www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm and you’re done. The RF 24-105 IS STM is superb and inexpensive www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm. If you need ultrawide (few people do) then you want the tiny RF 16/2.8 www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/16mm.htm or RF 15-30mm www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/15-30mm.htm For ultra tele the RF 100-400mm www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/100-400mm.htm is superb. Just ignore the exotic lenses. Get an R6 II!! Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thank You very much Ken! In Canon's "expensive" lens I meant that many of f/4 lenses cost about 1.5k euros where Nikon's are around 1k euros. I live in Estonia and there are no such great places to photograph, no big vistas, mountains, waterfalls etc, we have pretty flat landscape. Many times I struggle with "nothing to photograph" thing.. But I love nature and wish we had here some great landscape to photograph.. Regarding R6 II, it has only 24mp sensor, is it good enough for landscape? All resources tell about 30-45mp cameras for landscapes.. I very appreciate Your answers, Ken. Thank You very much for all what You're doing!
Hi Ken. I have a D750 with 2 afd & 1 50mm afs lens. Should I upgrade to Z series, move to Sony mirrorless, or this Canon R6 mk ii. I pursue to become a freelance event photographer
I prefer R6 Mk II. Nikon Z cameras are totally different form their DSLRs, and in a few years you'll wind up with all new flash and lenses and will realize that you could have changed brands for free, since you're not likely rtf be using anything you own today. I prefer the ergonomics, support and old/new lens compatibility of Canon over Nikon. THANKS!
Using a R5 with a 100-500 RF lens for wildlife. Mainly Antelope, deer and birds. If I see a super landscape or weather change I have to change lenses. Thinking of obtaining a R6 M2 to keep a wide angle lens or med zoom on and not having to change lenses on the fly. Maybe over Kill. I still use my Nikon F mount lenses with a DSLR for street photos or when the weather in WY is a challenge. That to maybe an over kill.
Struggling with noise, indoor shooting using 1600 to 2000 ISO, I’m getting a lot of noise. Also struggling to work with these files in Lightroom. My 6D mk ii raw files look much better and easier to edit.
Ugh. I love my R7, but a few things the 6 mk 2 has, I would like in my overall kit. Especially low light superiority. And I’ve grown oddly comfortable on your recommendations over anyone else’s online as even though you make a living doing this, you come across repeatedly as a no BS reviewer. Your statement that the 6 mk 2 is your favourite camera on the market and being a lifelong photographer just makes it harder to ignore. Moreover, all the items I have purchased based on your recommendations have turned out to be excellent. Sometimes I wish you would stop recommending things! I’m a skeptic, so I’m normally not affected by influence. Maybe that’s why I’m freely admitting this. You could just say you love the R7 almost as much and save me a few grand (including a few accessories like the grip I’ve wanted but fits not on my R7). These 6 MK II’s are on sale for Father’s Day and it makes it that much harder. Thank you again for another great video.
Great review Mr. Rockwell. Your love for colour is very contagious, I used to read ALL of your how-to articles during my boring job hours (bought "how to make friends and influence people", best $14 I ever spent). Greetings from El Salvador.
Third party lenses aren’t worthy. I did use a junk brand lens on it and it worked great, see www.kenrockwell.com/tech/pergear/14mm-f28.htm and See lens versus camera: www.kenrockwell.com/tech/lens-or-camera.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTVwhat I would call junk is a plasticky 24-70, 70-200 etc lens without internal zooming costing a 1300$ or more. eg. Sigma lenses are undoubtedly worth it and are loved for a good reason. But Canon (and Nikon) want you to buy their expensive but lacking any character or soul lenses/primes. Nikon is even worse than Canon selling old rebranded Tamron lenses for the price of newer and better G2 equivalents.
I have a R6 and I bought 3 months ago an R6 Mk II. I thought that I will not feel such a Diference....but....the R6 Mk II is another level. R3 level speed and specs
I just wait for Ken's reviews...As always you expect the best and get the best! Thanks Ken! What a fabulous camera!
You’re so awesome. Sorry it took so long to get out the full review on this one. Thanks!
Thanks Ken for the great no BS review, as always you say it like it is, and that means a lot to the photography community! I still love my 5D Mark IV and R6, but one day I will give the R6 ii a try after seeing your review.
Thanks!!
it's great too how is fact filled videos help us not waste money upgrading unnecessarily.
They hardly compare. R6 II really is the best camera I’ve ever used overall.
I sold my R6 for an R6 II, everything they improved was important for me. Very much worth it
@@KenRockwellTV Wow, that's amazing!
Thanks! Hope you LOVE it!
Great camera, and great review Ken!! Your word is pure gold!
Thank you!!!
Thanks!
Hi ken, I have read so many of your reviews and today I discovered that you have a TH-cam channel. It's really fun to discover the voice of the person who wrote all these articles. I think I'm going to have an intensive viewing session of your videos.
Thanks!!!!!
THANKS! I can't recall if the R3 is new enough to do in-camera compositing like the R8, R6 Mk II and OM SYSTEM OM-1.
The focus stacking example is riddled with artifacts...
Hi ken, I have followed you since 2011. I was on the fence, about pulling the trigger on the Canon R6 mark II. Going from a Canon 7D mark II. You sir, answered all my questions. Also, DP review had a good column written on the Canon R6 mark II. 👍
THANKS!!!!!!!!!! I'm supported and kept mostly ad-free by people using my links when they get things (www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores), THANKS!!!

I hope they upgrade the firmware on the R6 to also get that auto subject tracking.
Don’t know if that will burn on the older processors.
I got a great deal on the R6 on black friday, and I can confirm it has the auto subject tracking available. :)
Edit - Sorry, it is not, I was confused with AF tracking settings vs AF detection settings. Tracking sensitivity auto is available, but not auto subject detection.
Great info. Just got my second R6M2. Still working on getting the autofocus dialed in.
Thanks! See my huge guide at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-r6-ii-users-guide.htm
this was very helpful, im a beginner and have been wanting to be a photographer for a long time and im going to school for it in the summer and i was researching cameras and i found your review video and i want to thank you.
Korea.
R6 mk II is newer and I prefer it. Lenses are personal; I prefer the RF 24-240mm
Impressive what is does in auto HDR - most older cameras dont align them very all, when shooting handheld, they can get alignment artifacts.
Works great now. Thanks!
Yes Ken, you have been a great help, as usual.
Fantastically clear and to the point.
I will buy it, hope Canon give you commission.
Thanks,
Paul.

Awesome work Ken!
Thank you!!!!!
What I REALLY, REALLY miss on the Canon RF bodies is the top LCD screen with mode and exposure info without looking at the big display on the back.
I prefer the knob rather than the LCD. Great news is Canon makes both kids of cameras so we all win. Thanks!!

Thank you Ken 👍🏾
Don’t care about how much alloy each has. These are digital and thrown away every few years; they’re not like LEICA 35mm cameras which are immortal.
AWB? See my written reviews on each at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm
Looking forward to this!!!! Was thinking of both 6 or 6mii
Every mode should be a custom mode! At least photo and video each get 3.
Thanks! Yeah, I usually share my settings files, but this camera makes none.
Thanks Ken, just found your channel as I was after information on the R6ii that I’ve just purchased, having given my wife my six month old R7 (lucky girl). Subscribed and will be looking to see any of your other R6ii guides that you have.
Thanks! Here’s my complete guide www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-r6-ii-users-guide.htm
Agree. The best camera is one that get out of the way and let you take photo.
Thanks!!!
Apart from the smaller sensor size, how does this camera compare in terms of image quality & features versus the R7?
Great review and great information on your website! I have subscribed and look forward to reading more. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and yours, too!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Beautiful pictures from that camera.
Thanks!!!!
how does it compare to the r7? based on your description is very similar to, except the sensor size
Just bought this for my wife (second shooter) for weddings and events. It's very impressive, but I do find that the highlights are not as easy to recover as my old EOSR that I traded in. So we'll have to watch out for that.
Just expose a little less. Thats usually the issue. Thanks!
Your reviews are the best!
Your comments are even better. Thanks!
The best Real World/no-bullshit reviewer of internet.
Yes!!!! That’s what I’m going for. Thanks!
Beats me; I use my iPhone for video. Thsnks!
Nope. Never had that, but other cameras have on rare occasion.
No mention of the Focus problem?: " sometimes when the lens is focused way off to start with it can be difficult to acquire focus at very close range"
Thanks!
Absolutely beautiful photography, my friend 🫡
Thank you!!!!!
Ken, great video. I did not know the R6mk2 processed photo stacking in camera. I was considering the OM-1 for that very reason. Again thanks, I have been listening to you for years and don't feel like you have steered me wrong so thanks again.
Thank you! That’s why I do this.
Well you do an excellent job, KEN.
Thanks!
Do you plan to keep both or sell the r6?
@@MiguelJuanez Keeping the R6 as my second camera and selling my current backup, a 6D.
Thanks!
Love your reviews! Been following you since 2007ish!
Would love to see an R5 Mark II review and see how this compares
Weird about the Mirrorless Failing. Would it still work with the electronic shutter?
@@KenRockwellTV Yeah, I am sold on the 24-105 f/4. Still struggling with that 70-200 question. The weight comes down to feeling like lugging around a full soda can when using the 2.8. Probably won’t have the time unless the pace of innovation from the major brands slows. Thanks!
It’s such a bummer that Canon didn’t put the R5 EVF in the R6ii
Yeah, I wish it had the R3 EVF which is HDR...the OVF simulation setting is still there but without HDR like in the R3 it's not really as good or enjoyable.
I love my R6 mk II finder, no complaints from me. Thanks!
Thanks again!

Me too! I bought my first Minolta SR-1 used in 1973.
How does this compare to the r8 😮
Same images, probably same sensor, while this camera has a bigger body with more controls and a bigger battery. R8 is for bicycle touring and backpacking where weight is everything; this camera is for serious all day shooting.
It’s all about having all the controls you want on the R6 II While the tiny R8 requires you much more often to have to dig into menus.
@@KenRockwellTV tough call, but I much prefer the first option having the controls is more enjoyable than fighting for them, but I do understand cutting a toothbrush in half to save the weight in my backpack, where does the r7 fall in here, is it possible to be a nice compliment for either of them? Thank you for sharing your joy with us
I bought an R8 but cancelled the order in favor of this R6 MK2. Think it’ll work better for video. Thank you!
Thanks!
No! I PREFER the ergonomics of the R6 II, and the pictures are the same.
I want to see this compared to the a7cii
See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm we’re all differ t but I hate using Sony by comparison.
Can you tag/save the pictures you like in the burst more and bulk delete the rest?
Yes, mark them as PROTECTED first in the camera.
Any firmware update on the screen display rotating when shooting vertical since you have done this video ?
Haven’t checked, sorry. Thanks for asking.
It seems you can't take HDR photos in RAW though. That would be a problem for me.
I haven’t tried. See Canon’s manual at cam.start.canon/en/C012/manual/c012.pdf
@@KenRockwellTV The manual says HDR images are captured in HEIF or JPEG. That is disappointing.
@@set3777 You should not throw away data before you really have done all the image adjustments.
Get the STM lenses. They take the same pictures. Full reviews of everything at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/index.htm
Is the AF better then from the R5? Not gonna sell my R5 but maybe i will buy this one....
While you can do noise reduction- the sheer file sizes make it hell when you have a 900-1300 raw file timelapse to batch process…
My older canon R for some strange reason seems to cancel noise more consistently frame to frame in lightroom when you go to view the finoshed timelapse
So then it’s do you buy the expensive topaz software for video that reduces noise or do you simply go for the larger pixels and more manageable file sizes of the r6ii?
I am leaning on r6ii because everything I sell is limited to 4k 30-60fps
You come across as a pretty animated guy, Ken. I'd put yourself in the videos, you're not ugly. Your body language will sell the camera even better.
Thanks!!!!
The best camera is the one that makes your photography easier... thats why i stick with canon not other brands it just works and generate profits for me 😊
Bingo! Thanks!
thanks 🙏 again for a best review like always, I always trust you only about photography, I am looking to buy r6 mark ii and a 24-105 2.8 for good.
Fun, but the 24-105/2.8 is a huge lens intended to be used on a tripod for video, not carried around all day for casual shooting.
How do you find very low light performance? I have read its not the best.
I greatly prefer the R6 II and have long forgotten about the old R5.
R6 II is best camera I’ve ever used, regardless of price. I’d get it unless there’s some weird reason you’d need an R5, and I can’t imagine what that would be
Would you choose R6MII over the Nikon Z8?
YES! I much prefer Canon over Nikon today. See the written reviews at KenRockwell.com for all the details.
Hi! There shouldn’t be any errors. I’d have Canon have a look at it all. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Sure
Perfect! Only Canon makes lenses like that, too. Thanks!
Did u guys follow ken rockwell since blog days.
I know i did 😉 glad to see your going to video format
Thanks!
You are the BEST Ken....thanks for the awesome advice.
YOU are the best! THANKS!!!
Hi Ken what a fantastic review to watch thank you so much I tend to shoot more landscapes than wildlife say 20% would this be good more for landscape many thanks from the uk 🇬🇧 😊
Good for everything, and get the new 200-800 for wildlife.
@@KenRockwellTV thank you so much I will go for the canon r 6ii have a wonderful Christmas 🎄
Inspirering comments, Ken. In favour of the Canon EOS R6 Mk II. I guess this camera will be my first mirrorless choice to compliment my trusted Canon Mk IV SLR. Laszlo Montreal
I think it's the best camera ever made, so I hope you love it, too. Thanks!
Thanks! You never know what newer firmware might bring; I'm not an HDR shooter.
Hi Ken, can R50 do the same HDR stacking?
Yes! Set. MENU > Camera page 2 > HDR Mode > Auto image align > enable. More at my R50 guide at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r50.htm#usage thanks!!!
@@KenRockwellTV thank you
Great review. It's a beast, miles ahead of my old 6D especially for video and features
Yip; time marches on. Thanks!
As someone who has shot digital cameras since 2003, good lord is the ISO ever good these days. I only ever use slow ISO like 100 or lower if I am outside in the bright sun with a lens wide open, otherwise its like who cares up to like ISO 6000
Thanks!
Was not expecting this 😮
Surprise!!
So you don’t thing I need the extra 20+ megapixel for portraiture
R5 or R6 Mii?? Is the mega pixels are huge deal? R5 has double. I’m new, appreciate any help.
R6 II is newer and I prefer it. Pixels are only for marketing; each takes the same pictures.
@@KenRockwellTV thank you
Great review Mr.Rockwell!
Are big American hands equivalent to my British sausage fingered hands?🖐🏼✋🏼
Hoping so as my R6 Mk2 arrives this week😀
Beats me!!
THANKS!
Great review, great channel, glad i found it tnx!
Thank YOU!!!
Thanks! I just bought one today!
Yessss!
4:33 wait, you want your photos to look like that? oh lord...
Awesome shots! You bet I do. Thanks!
at last a photographer who says dont use high isos to get frozen action use a better lens.
Amen! Thanks.
I LOVE the R6 mark II. You don’t need any excuse to get one; it’s my favorite camera of all time!
Wow! Superb review, thank you very much.

Struggling with noise, indoor shooting using 1600 to 2000 ISO, I’m getting a lot of noise. Also struggling to work with these files in Lightroom. My 6D mk ii raw files look much better and easier to edit.

Agree R6MKII is amazing!
Thanks!!
R7 is unique in being self leveling; its sensor twists to keep itself horizontal! R7 is awesome, stick with it

best body but a system with a very limited (and pricey) lenses and a closed mount for 3rd party manufacturers
