      Yeah, it's nice to see results from something OTHER than luxury influencer junkets where they just shoot canned scenarios designed especially to make the product look good. This follow-up still seems rose-tinted, though. One segment I'd love to see as a standard DPRTV review feature would be “The worst thing about this product is…” or “One thing I hated about this product is…”

    • @snowwalker9999
      @snowwalker9999 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jlwilliams I agree. However I think without having to mention the word hate (maybe they do not hate anything about the camera) they could have a section about things that need to be improved or upgraded. And, maybe a more detailed hands on comparison with the cameras they mention such as Lumix S5 ii Sony A7 IV ...

    • @danieldougan269

      The reason they do it this way is because those initial reviews are using cameras with pre-production firmware. So, the final reviews are more in line with the camera as consumers will really experience it.

      Linguistically it makes sense for the review to be a second look after time. First look doesn't make sense as a review.

    Got this camera back in December after 18 years as a pro photographer and it's the best camera I've ever used... by far. It's definitely class leading, beating out the A7IV (which has cropped 4K, bad LCD, and lower dynamic range and higher noise than the R6 II in all the tests I did plus the R6 II has way better rolling shutter and battery life,and costs less where I live!) and significantly better than the S5 II which still has focus issues (check out DSLR Videoshooter's review, he's the best) and has heavily crippled and cropped high speed modes, even in 1080. Ugh.
    Alex Barerra did a comparison with the A7IV and not only did the R6 II beat it when it comes to dynamic range and ISO noise, shockingly the R6 II was also SHARPER. I upscaled Raws to 33 MP to match the A7IV and sure enough the R6 II is sharper in real world. Perhaps due to weaker AA filter, and lenses and focus accuracy too.
    12 FPS mechanical is already insane for photography. I shot sports with the best 1D at the time, and it was 10 FPS and it was always more than enough. And that 12 FPS blows away the A7IV (which gets only about 7 FPS in real world) and the S5 II.

    So glad you guys brought up the Dynamic Range loss in electronic shutter. (Also noticeable in video) Currently, it is the only real weakness I’ve found that I actually have to shoot around. It’s unfortunate, but also not surprising the camera would have SOME weakness. Overall, it fills its role as a complimentary camera to my R3 bodies and a general everyday shooter for real estate and other subjects. Its performance is truly remarkable for the price point and can do a very good job hanging with the R3.

    Gordon addressed my biggest problem with the original R6: the AF occasionally just drifts off me for no discernable reason. I chalked it up to poor low light performance because it happens most often when my face is in shadow, and I'm dark-skinned to begin with. But the R6 II looks way better in multiple areas, including the AF performance. I really must consider upgrading, unless the R5 II comes out later this year as rumored.

    I have a unique situation and I'm trying to decide on a camera body. I do photogametry on film sets. Oftentimes I need to jump in and do it while they are setting up for other shots. Currently I use a 5D Mark IV which presents a few problems that I'd like to improve on.
    1. Photogrammetry requires a lot of photos. Bracketed. So I want to go mirrorless and maybe digital shutter because it feels like I'm just putting so many miles on the camera in such a short amount of time.
    2. An entire film crew could be standing around waiting while I'm doing the photogrammetry and a lot of times I'm doing them in low light situations. So shooting bracketed photos on a tripod can take a really long time due to the longer exposures.
    3. I need as little depth of field as possible.
    So to sum it all up, I need something that can shoot a large volume of photos fast in low light without opening the aperture too much.
    The fact that I already have a 5D, it would be nice to stay in the canon family but it's not a must. I would love to hear any thoughts you might have. Thank you and thanks for your video!

That being said, I'll take a mulligan as great as this any day. Even though the EVF isn't HDR so the OVF sim isn't as great as it could be, and they seem afraid of full size HDMI ports...I don't have real complaints for how I'd use this camera day to day as a photographer.

    Subject detect only is a HUGE feature for video. R5 doesn't even have that. It's handed straight down from the cine line. None of the competition has it either. This alone with the lack of overheat, no crop 4K60p, low rolling shutter, photo/stills switch etc makes for not only a compelling upgrade but a class-leading hybrid camera in overall specs. Yeah S5ii got PDAF but it is still first gen PDAF.

    Was Chris only using one SD card in the camera for those photos that got corrupted? I'd hope this could be prevented by using both card slots on the camera. That's the entire point of dual SD card slots, right? At least it is for the way I shoot. I know some people prefer to fill one card up and then start the next one, but I would much rather have a backup to prevent exactly the problem Chris experienced.
    I want to like the R6 Mark II and R7, but there are a few things holding them back for me.
    1) Closed RF lens mount. We need Tamron and Sigma lenses in every mount if for no other reason than my wallet. I know you can adapt EF and EF-S lenses (and I own the Sigma 18-35mm and 50-100mm lenses in EF-S), but that's an imperfect solution with compromised autofocus. The lack of Tamron lenses even makes me think about Sony over Panasonic. Competition is a great thing. I know Canon make some fantastic native glass in this mount, but there are not enough lenses (particularly in APS-C for the R7), and goddamn their inflated prices.
    2) Lack of video assist tools. This is easily fixable in firmware if Canon wants to fix it. Why don't they care?
    3) Iffy stabilization. The S5 II and S5 IIX just win here. Not that the R6 Mark II is bad at stabilization, and it's probably better than the a7 IV, but the S5 II and S5 IIX are just far more stable for video.

  • @digitaldevigner4080
    @digitaldevigner4080 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The lack of 3rd party lenses doesn't really bother me. Canon RF adapts EF lenses almost perfectly which means we do have a ton of new and used options out there if we need a more cost friendly 3rd party option. Not to mention a growing Canon EF lens used market.
    Having been through the dark ages of 3rd party lenses in terms of quality control and not as fast or accurate electronic controls I'm not entirely sure we are missing out on a lot anyway. I say this as one currently using Tamron 24-70 G2 f2.8 and 70-200 G2 f2.8 EF zooms on my RF adapter. They work and work well but I can't help but feel they will always be a step behind Canon in terms of firmware support and how well they communicate with the body. Havign adapted many lenses to m43 in the past as well its sometimes hit or miss with 3rd parties. I now tend to prefer native manufacture glass to have the peace of mind I'm getting the best electronic control possible and the best firmware support possible.
    Not saying Tamron and Sigma have not gotten a lot better over the years. I'm generally very happy with the G2 Tamrons. At the end of the day it's just a bit of money we are talking here and I just don't worry about it as much as I once did. Getting the most bang for the buck isn't as important now as getting the best. I realize that is not the case for everyone and for those the EF market is still solid and will be solid for many years to come. Plus the number of used options will likely make it even more affordable for those starting out. A used 3rd party EF lens like the G2 Tamrons will likely cost much less than a brand new 3rd party option.
    Oh and get the Canon brand EF to RF adapters. If electronic communication accuracy, speed and firmware support are important don't add yet another 3rd party into the mix. The cost difference is not that much to sacrifice the performance of the system. I see a lot of reviewers use the cheap 3rd party adapters and then judge EF to RF performance. I once used those cheap adapters as well on m43 and they were horrible compared to the Metabones. Metabones is also a 3rd party but they had years of experience and dedicated effort to communicating the best they could between lenses and bodies. Even then some EF lenses just didn't work very well. Buying the Canon adapter to use Canon EF glass on a Canon RF body means nothing is lost in translation and you get the best communication possible.
    All 3rd parties have to reverse engineer the Canon mount to figure out what makes it tick. I just don't think it's a wise move to think that will deliver the maximum performance these bodies are capable of. Eventually I will be replacing my Tamron G2 zooms with Canon RF zooms. I have actually switched back to mostly shooting on RF primes and don't use the zooms very much anymore so its not a must for me right now.

    I'm personally using the Sony A7 III for my private photography and video. It's still an amazing camera. But since we need a new alrounder atwork I will buy the R6 Mark II to have a workhorse in both photography and video. Should be good, can't wait to test it out.

    You also should mention vs older cameras. You don’t necessarily need the newest camera from every manufacturer. There’s older choices which would work fine for photography. A lot of new cameras lose their soul too. Not all but some

    The big question; if you own the R6 is the Mark II worth the upgrade?

  • @andyp7787
    @andyp7787 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Have my eye on it but already have the R7. The 6 mk 2 has a few slight upgrades but nothing drastic. Low light would interest me the most. I’ve read by most users it’s superior, but a night/day difference? sorry bad pun.
    I do a fair amount of cropping in my wild life shots on the R7. I also get in my opinion at least good low light with my fast lenses. Biggest issue which MAY bother me is the greater noise with low light pics. But that can be mitigated in post. So aside from wishing I could have the whole line up of R models, the 5 seems overkill and the 6 is of interest. How much more benefit will I get? I have a fair stable of RF lenses already (it’s been a lucky year for me)

    hmm, I would think the Canon would be better for general photography over the Sony due to the Speedlite/flash system, which I have always gotten great results with DSLRs (sorry I am on here trying to decide which mirrorless option to move up to). When shooting portraits or general photography, I almost always use my Speedlite for fill.

    Both A7 mk4 and S5 mk2 crops in to aps-c in 4k 60, which means you need a different set of lenses for photo than video. The Canon is the only true hybrid here, no crop, one set of lenses for everything you might want to do

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider ปีที่แล้ว

      @Shariq Ahmed🌎💙 With the S5 Mk II and A7 IV, when you shoot 4K60, it punches in on the shot and forces a 1.5x crop on your image. If you're fine with your camera zooming in when you take 4K60, then you don't need a second set of lenses. For many shooters, this is not a big deal because many people shoot in 4K60 for slow motion, and most slow motion shots tend to be close-ups. However, if you are shooting for 60 fps delivery or you just want to take slow motion wide angle shots, then you need extra wide angle lenses for 4K60. That's why you need a second set of lenses.

  • @AndreasLudwigPhD
    @AndreasLudwigPhD ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL. When I still shot on my 6D and 6D mk2, TH-cam reviews kept nagging about the lack of dual card slots. Not a professional camera, because professionals need redundancy when shooting. Now R6 HAS dual card slots. AND is being used by professionals. And STILL. :-)
    As a professional behavioural scientist I'd recommend some nudges. Package SD cards in pairs for your reviews and add switching on redundancy to the initial camera set-up checklist ;-)

    Hi! Awesome review! I have a question about video: When shooting in FullHD, is there any "line skipping" from the sensor or the frame is made of full read out and then downscaling? In old DSLRs, there was some line skipping, most noticeable as "aliasing" when shooting video with straight lines, for instance.
    And in 4K, what does the "oversampling" exactly do? some kind of pixel binning?
    Thank you very much!

    So, am I correct that there is a split decision here (for general photography)?
    @7:57, Jordan prefers Canon over Panasonic if users prefer a good photographic & video (jack of all trades) camera
    @8:54, Chris slightly prefers Sony over Canon
    Also, R6 has weather proof coating right?

    Would you be able to do a mini review of the Fujifilm X-H2S firmware 3 update for further improved autofocusing? Or maybe the review could wait until that update trickles down to the X-H2/X-T5 sensor systems. I wonder if they've updated IBIS video behavior?

  • @Pmeyer1226
    @Pmeyer1226 ปีที่แล้ว

    He kept referring to the R6 mk II as a sports camera because of the 40 fps. He completely omits comparison to the R7 which I find odd. For sports I find myself shooting mechanical, and the extra reach of the R7 really is a big deal when shooting motor sports or really most outdoor sport for that matter. Seems to be more of a cost cut compromise of a R5 than a more enhanced action camera of a R7.
