    This gives me information that I didn't know I wanted but I'm happy I learned it.

    another trick that will go mostly unnoticed is on the majority of the poles Mario needs to get on top of to make the coins come out, he pops up onto the pole from a position that he normally wouldn't be able to. Like a dive rollout can't get on top of a pole, nor can a backflip snap you right onto it. In these instances Mario is hitting a "misalignment," which I'm definitely not qualified to fully explain lol, but I do know it's unit precise positioning and I think it works because it lets Mario enter the wall slightly and then it snaps him up onto it (like it would when he runs up stairs). Maybe wrong on that last bit but yeah really precise stuff going on each time that happens!!

    • @galoomba5559
      @galoomba5559 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Misalignments happen because the game rounds mario's position to an integer for floor collision, but not wall collision, so there's a 1x1 unit square that's considered a floor but not a wall.

    • @PlushSM64
      @PlushSM64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeahhh I forgot about mentioning that!
      In addition to galoomba's, correcting another slight inaccuracy: I'm not using misalignments when backflipping to land on the pole. That tech is done once in this TAS and it's at the fourth pole, conveniently fixing the issue of being low after the rollout. When backflipping we can get on the pole without it, because we don't have the issue of height

    • @Kosmicd12
      @Kosmicd12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PlushSM64 oh ok, I always thought popping onto a ledge with that much vertical speed would require misalignment (like doing it from a lava boost). Maybe it's required in that case because you have to "pass through" the bottom of a floor? Thanks for the correction :)

    • @PlushSM64
      @PlushSM64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kosmicd12The specifics of clipping through a floor with walls under (without misalignment) are complex to visualize, but I'll try my best at being clear
      Essentially, whether it's possible or not to snap onto a floor with a wall around depends on the orientation of the wall hitboxes at the corner.
      If the walls surround the corner fully, snapping up is impossible (unless you have hyperspeed), but if the walls are aligned a certain way, then you can snap onto it through a diagonal approach (imgur.com/a/WLgWN12 ). It is the latter in this case.
      Also, the wall hitboxes start 30 units below the floor, so as long as you're precise enough to reach the floor within 30 units of height, then you can clip up instead of getting pushed away.

    The greatest TAS of all time
    is
    an
    autoscroller.
    Just shows how much dedication and optimization can go into SM64 TASing.

    • @Kosmicd12
      @Kosmicd12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I had someone complain the other day about how speedrunners use the word autoscroller to describe more than simply the screen scrolling automatically. I think most of the time it's fine but in this case I totally agree with them lol, I think this can hardly be described as an autoscroller. At nearly every frame during the star he's doing something to complete it faster

    This is an amazing explanation, and what an unbelievable TAS! Manipulating Koopa "the Quick" by flying close enough to him for that one frame was absolutely crazy
    I was impressed by RTA speedrunners talking to the red bob-omb and opening the cannon before heading back up to the summit, and being able to collect 100 coins in that same time blows my mind

    I will always be so intrigued by Koopa manipulation as well as all of the things that this community continues to find and compile over all of these years. So proud of all of the TASers and all community members in these constant achievements.
    And to answer your question posed at the end of the video, I wholeheartedly agree that this is one of the greatest achievements in sm64. The compilation of all of these strats found throughout the years makes it so much better than it already is on the surface level. Amazing video Drogie

  • @xarxos5274
    @xarxos5274 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    About the cannonballs: Could one imagine a strat where you enter their spawning distance at just the right times to spawn them so that Koopa the Quick jumps over them and gains speed? Or do you have to be constantly close to them or else they'll just despawn again, so it's not really feasible?
    Also, great video! I for one would love to see more TAS explanation videos from you! :)

    I love Bismuth videos but I find that he goes into detail too much (hear me out) for example he explained the HOLP thing in more detail then you did but I actually prefer YOUR explanation. The reason why is because in Bismuth's explanation, he explains how the held object is a fake and the real object is still where it was before Mario picked it up, it's just invisible.
    Which is neat info but from a viewers perspective who's watching a TAS that information is almost completely worthless and all it did was extend his video by 15minutes. I prefer your explanation because you left out the technology behind it and decided to just explain how it works at a more surface level. Best part is...I understood everything you said and how it works and only took 2 minutes rather then 15.
    Bismuth likes to explain WHY things work the way they do which is interesting but all viewers need is HOW it works lol.
    I;m not saying Bismuth's way is bad not even close. but there's a time and place for everything go into detail in a separate vid or something. I love Bismuth btw! 💖💖💖
