So I came up with a design and built a set of my own professional looking DIY downriggers that work awesome, and the best part is they cost under $50 each! Approximate Cost breakdown:
Steel: 10 pounds of scrap yard steel at $.50 a pound = $5.00
Pulley: $4.00
Spoked wheel: $17.00
Braided Line: $10 divided by 2= $5.00
Bolts and hardware: $3
Welding Materials: $4.00
Paint: $5.00
Total materials less tax: = $43.00

Awesome next project
These downriggers worked out really well for me the only thing I found out is that I needed to put a little less line on the reel as there were times it would jump off if I wasn't careful. Awesome build! I’ve been wanting to get some down riggers but didn’t want to spend $150 even on ugly cheap ones, thank you for helping me finalize some ideas I had on building a set for my boat.

Awesome craftsmanship...wish my welds looked that good!..lol..how many feet of braided line do you suppose each wheel holds? God bless
Thanks so much I appreciate your kind words! I first started off with around 125 of braid on the wheels (you could probably go up to 150 feet) and then removed quite a bit of it because sometimes if you are not watching the braid builds up on the sides of the wheels and can jump off the wheel. It works great except for that issue. If you want to add a lot of line I would also add a guide to keep the braid running in the middle of the wheel which I plan on doing. Hope that was a help! For the bending you can go to a muffler or machine shop and get it done

Was thinking the emergency stop handle could've been extended to run under the arm and welded where the flat stock is attached. Would be one less cut. Could also grind a flat spot on its outside edge at pulley position. Maybe one shallow angled notch in spoke edge with a 90° trailing face to act as an actual brake vs scrubber brake.
Then again all you're wanting to do is slow that flinging handle down enough to get your hand back on it without injury. So probably not necessary.
You have some good ideas and after using it a while If I had to do it over I would probably add a gear and pawl so the wheel locks when you let go of the handle. I also need to add some type of eye to guide the braid towards the center of the reel as it can stack up along one of the sides and jump the wheel. All in all it has served its purpose and saved me a lot of money! But as you suggested there is always ways of making it better! Take care and God bless!

Think a resetable line counter would be a handy addition. Now just how to mount it..........hmmm.
Yeah you could mount a Berkley line counter by welding a bracket down from the main arm, but they are not that reliable from the reviews. I just count the handle cranks with 3 turns equaling 4 feet. I don't normally troll below 25 feet. Thanks for sharing and watching and may God bless you!
