  • This project was sooo much fun! I think i will come back to this concept and rebuild it with a couple changes. it is actually a bit too fast, i´d like to change that and also i would love to build a version in stainless steel so i don`t have to worry about rust.
    so stay tuned for the update :)

    If you put the dagger board in you'll have greater control. That's what the slot is in the middle. It's actually a sailing dinghy! Cool video Laura! :)

    • @adamperkins6054
      @adamperkins6054 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      ScottieBruiser
      I wouldn't do that. That will add a huge amount of drag. Dagger boards are not intended to provide greater control, but to provide lateral resistance against the wind.

    • @paulheitkemper1559
      @paulheitkemper1559 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Perkins not true. Anyone who sails a trailerable boat knows that you put the keel down a little to get better tracking under power.

    • @reddaB
      @reddaB 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Heitkemper I thought it would make it go straight instead of turning being converted to like scooting sideways, carving wter more than sliding squint, under sail or.motor.

    • @adamperkins6054
      @adamperkins6054 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point of contention her may be the phrase "down a little bit". You may be right about a (very) small skeg-type fin helping tracking. I myself wouldn't bother to try. The drill works far better than I might have expected, but I'd be very wary of adding additional wetted area. Drag is Drag.

    • @paulheitkemper1559
      @paulheitkemper1559 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Perkins yes, drag is drag, but it's obvious you've never tried to motor a sailboat. With no keel to aid in tracking that thing will skate all over the surface. It is very tiring to control, especially given her poor tiller and throttle design.

    Excellent idea and use of not only what you had laying around, but also of something you were able to salvage which was considered as nothing more than junk to the previous owwner.
    I have a cordless drill which I rarely use, only because when I need it I have to wait while the battery charges, so end up grabbing the extension cord and one of my standard/cord powered drills.
    Since it's just sitting on a shelf in the shop I figure it might be put to better use than being a paper weight so plan on putting it to use on one of my kayaks since I have a destroyed rotor in my right arm and now have problems paddling.
    Thank you for an innovative design and for sharing.

    It's an optimist, a sailboat for small children. Most optimists have a double hull acting as an air chamber to prevent the boat from sinking. If yours has that you might want to drain the air chamber because it's full of water making it super heavy.

    • @Pow3llMorgan
      @Pow3llMorgan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to sail these until I grew out of them. They're fun little boats but they have a severe 'flaw' - if you go too fast and angle the sail too much, it will simply plow down the bow and flood in a matter of seconds. They also flip very easily in gusts but as previously, stated they are completely sink-free (if not abandoned at a lake) and it's only a matter of up-righting it with your body weight, bail and move on!

    It's quite incredible how powerful modern cordless drills are. The gearboxes aren't strong though, and the motors can't handle heavy sustained loads. But certainly an impressive feat for such a compact tool with just a standard battery. I was shocked how quick it was.

      Lemtil you tried ;)
      Look at 3:23 where she's mounting the prop. Right where the motor was on the angle grinder, which means at the small gear.

    • @JEYD220699
      @JEYD220699 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A gearbox actually reduces rpms (the speed of the motor-revolutions per minute), but it increases torque.

    • @alcontrastdotcom
      @alcontrastdotcom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      gearboxes can also increase output rpms/reduce torque as it is doing in this case.

    • @JEYD220699
      @JEYD220699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the case of an angle grinder gearbox , the rpm are reduced significantly. 3-4:1. Correct me if I am wrong, but that means that the motor produces something like 30000 rpm and the final speed is something like 10-12000 rpm.

    Great build. Looks like it performs better than many of the small electric boat motors available.

    • @JaapVersteegh
      @JaapVersteegh ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, you'll drain the drill battery in a couple of minutes, overheat it if you use it continuously and probable wear it down to breakage in just a few tens of hours. None of that will happen with electric boat motors. Fun project, but a small minn kota motor would be way better and wont cost you more than an expensive battery drill.
