Shout out to my friend Alison who introduced me to Jane's via this live demo back in high school, senior year, 1989. Went out and found my own copy, then bought Nothing's Shocking, and spent the rest of my days in that place playing them in my ears as I walked the hallways. I don't think I would've made it out of there if I hadn't. After high school, I went to as many JA shows as I could, and connected to so many amazing people along the way who also felt the band in their soul. Idk where Alison is today, but many thanks, babe 💜
100 percent that guitar work by David Navarro is insane! Saw them in Tucson just before they got famous. It was a Shocking (pun intended) turn to a more grittier version of Rock and Roll than Glam bands provided…
This live cover of Sympathy for the Devil caught me up to the point of consider it even better than the Stones original or the one Guns and Roses did. Of course one can't forget to mention those bongos and their rythm. But then there is the decading point Perry Farrell and his voice give to the whole. Kind of a brilliant theater, would I say he does. He really goes within the character he personifies. If had to imagine the devil way of being or behaviour and his voice, this is it. Got the record and it also made me look for more of the same quality in Jane's Addiction cds. The David Navarro guitar is also so good, that I had to look for more of his guitar playing too. The whole cd is worthy be it only for this cover. And it seems quite spontaneous, as if they were just playing for a bunch of friends and fans... ❤️👍🤗
I first heard this song when watching the science fiction movie *Alien Nation* way back in 1989. It had a scene in a bar in which Janes Addiction was up on stage singing _Sympathy for the Devil_
Actually, it was a female Newcomer doing a strip-tease to the song. She was spinning around poles while the gauze she wore unraveled behind her. Not that the teenage me would have rewound the scene to watch it a few dozen times back when it came out on VHS...
The main solo in Rock n Roll blew my mind when I was younger, the part where Dave stays on that blazing bend for a few seconds then into a few notes. Just fantastic stuff, and how they blend the ending into sympathy, beautiful x
At least 2 cassettes, 2 CDs lifted from my college-era apartments, now still going on a dubbed cassette and a CD. Guess which one evokes the most nostalgia?
Jane' s Addiction can do no wrong. By far one of my top favorite rock bands of all time. I've been listening to their music since the 90's and it just gets better.
Hung out in st Petersburg with Perry had some hash to share....watched the gulf war on TV smoked out....was awesome..super chill. And thank you to the gf for allowing that...
Not enough words to describe how brilliant & how his song was written to be sung. Sorry Rolling Stones, y'all rock this song the f*@$ out. And I thought great song b4 Janes version. Amazing vocals, Perry!
Sounds just as good today. Always thought the combination of the songs was brilliant, and underappreciated. I always found Perry so convincing. He is just.... so... =sigh=
And to think that this was a live recording...the guitar riffs personify Rock n' Roll while Steven Perkins absolutely nails it being beyond innovative . That is what a percussionist does... if you don't agree with me that they completely made The Velvet Underground sound even cooler, then you have no business listening to Jane'sAddiction.
This is a live show edited and added to in order to create this frigging perfect album. I remember at the time if you couldn't dig it we could not be friends.
" You like the new Lou Reed?" " The early stuff. The new stuff, he's trying to be Bowie, he should be himself. I'm not a big Lou man." " Yeah, but if Bowie's doing Lou, and Lou's doing Bowie, Lou's still doing Lou..."
Primo 👌🏼 … still got the worn out cassette … what I wouldn’t give to go back to those days to relive my newly found love … 🥰Jane’s Addiction🥰 … J.A. FOREVER!!! 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼
This cover of "rock n roll" sticks to the Velvets' original. Other versions (Runaways, Alice Cooper) patteren themselves after Mitch Ryders' 1971 rendition.
...i remember hunting this album out..on c.d!!.. O called tower records...the wall....slipped disk in valley stream...i found it in broadway mall sam goody...there was one copy!!! "HA HA"".. I paid for that one no 5 finger discount😁( they put them big plastic pieces over c.d)😁
True story. I saw them in 1991 at Lollapalooza. They were the last to play so it was at night when they hit the stage. It rained most of the afternoon at the fest but the bands still played. By the time Janes Addiction played, it stopped raining but the dance area was two feet of mud. Nobody was out there, but in stead, they were crowded in front of the stage like cattle. When they busted-out their song *Summertime Rolls* my girlfriend and I walked out into the mud with our combat boots on and slow-danced, holding each other. We were the only ones out there and the spot light shined on us. Perry gave us props in the middle of the song. That night was dope. I miss Heathur. I should've married her, but back in those days we were fancy free.
I wanna go back in time....i cant get a thought together with technology....vise, a button away...my brain feels like a 1970's "Kiss" pinball machine!!!... Lights n beeps ..just disary
I was at that one too - on ritual tour!!! I class that as my favourite, if not best gig I ever went to🎉 Astoria the year or so before was great too. I think primus supported at the Astoria🎉
Love this so much and this album and further genres it inspired as well as musicians but..Perry is still and Dave Navarro meh where/why'd it go wrong, this song particularly reminds me of every blind melon song. Love both
I remember way back when I added the version of rock 'n' roll to a mixtape I made, and it was the introduction song of Jane's Addiction. I played everyone because I loved it so damn much.
Jenny said when she was just five years old You know there's nothing happenin' at all Every time she puts on the radio There was nothing going down at all Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station She couldn't believe what she heard at all She started dancin' to that fine fine music You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll Despite all the amputations You could just dance to a rock 'n' roll station And it was alright Jenny said when she was just five years old My parents are gonna be the death of us all Two TV sets and two Cadillac cars Ain't gonna help us at all Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station She don't believe what she heard at all She started dancin' to that fine fine music You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll Despite all the computations You could just dance to a rock 'n ' roll station And it was alright Sometimes everythings allright all good.
If you could only choose one Jane's Addiction album....CHOOSE THIS ONE!
Wish this version of the song could go on for another hour or so, Janes absolutely rocks this, and makes it their own.
agreed, some of these covers in xxx are so good
By far puts the Stones in the dust
Better than Stones, like 500%
Two songs in one. All live. I miss Jane's Addiction
They killed both velvet undo and the Stones on these ones. No question.
It feels like yesterday this song came out i was pumped I remain this way wow what is it

This is my absolute favorite cover of this song!!
100 percent that guitar work by David Navarro is insane! Saw them in Tucson just before they got famous. It was a Shocking (pun intended) turn to a more grittier version of Rock and Roll than Glam bands provided…
Great band, great cover. Here in Mexico city, Jane's Addiction rules.
They filmed GIFT there.

I HATED the Guns & Roses version of this song; Axl Rose’s vocals ruined an otherwise solid jam.
Every Jane's show I got to see was like that, too. The vibe you get hearing this recording. ♡
Yo this is the best of the 3 mentioned covers...Korn does a hella unplugged live version aswell..but mick the stones are still the shit..
Hey thanks for your opinion but guess what..
You used the word personify in the wrong context

Great rendition and one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Jane's addiction marked the begining of a new era for me.. hell yeah!
Same
Yep.
Freedom thats whats up
Yeah me too, good times.
I'm most thrilled this was never overplayed on terrestrial radio.
Better than both originals. So dynamic and energetic. The sliding slightly off key double harmonies seal it.
Listening from Buenos Aires. Love Jane's Addiction!!!
Only Perry Farrell can sound more like the devil than Mick Jagger, and only Jane's Addiction can do this song better(?) Than the Stones.
This is my all time version of Sympathy, Perry nails it. That transition is magic. You can't get this stuff anymore. "It was Alright"
Dude that’s the greatest...never will I forget hearing that for the first time..still blows my mind
I second that!
The main solo in Rock n Roll blew my mind when I was younger, the part where Dave stays on that blazing bend for a few seconds then into a few notes. Just fantastic stuff, and how they blend the ending into sympathy, beautiful x
I went through 4 copys of this album on cassette tape as a teenager.... Lol
By far my most favorite janes addiction album. Good stuff. 👍👍
I did the same with ritual, damn fast forward and rewind on the tape deck .
Listening from ALASKA. Love Jane's Addiction...
Alaska seems like you have a decent music seen
@@darrylearly1717 sure is. Checkout 36 CrazyFists
SAME HERE!
Dave absolutely rips in these two songs well actually the whole band is on fire, but Dave's guitar playing really gets to me.
He always does.
i fell assbackwards into this album, loved it ever since
Hope they were wearin protection
Hung out in st Petersburg with Perry had some hash to share....watched the gulf war on TV smoked out....was awesome..super chill. And thank you to the gf for allowing that...
Saw this live with thunderstorms rolling in at dusk lolapaloza roughly 92ish... Was surreal
First time I heard this record I was tripping on Purple Mescaline. Definitely made an impression. 1987. What a year ..
Not enough words to describe how brilliant & how his song was written to be sung. Sorry Rolling Stones, y'all rock this song the f*@$ out. And I thought great song b4 Janes version. Amazing vocals, Perry!
Navarro, Perkins...friggin' animals! :)
And what's crazy is that those 2 get only 10 percent apiece on Jane's royalties, according to one of the bios of the band...
I lost years of my life hearing this. Love Jane's Addiction
been dancin to the r&r station since 1974
Sounds just as good today. Always thought the combination of the songs was brilliant, and underappreciated. I always found Perry so convincing. He is just.... so... =sigh=
When the first time hear they sing these songs...I was kinda wow,ROCK N ROLL !!! 🤘
Best album they did: rough, inspired and decadent
It's between this and Nothing's Shocking, which literally changed my life the first time I heard it back in '89.
One of the only albums i've listened to throughout my life with regularity.
Decadent is an excellent choice of adjective sir.
Thank you.
Best ever!
Yep
This is a live show edited and added to in order to create this frigging perfect album. I remember at the time if you couldn't dig it we could not be friends.
Fuckin ultimate version!!!##... Beeming with feel!!!!!
Perry channelling his inner Lou. Love Jane's with a passion.
" You like the new Lou Reed?"
" The early stuff. The new stuff, he's
trying to be Bowie, he should be
himself. I'm not a big Lou man."
" Yeah, but if Bowie's doing Lou, and
Lou's doing Bowie, Lou's still doing
Lou..."
Their best album!!
Reminds me of fun. Weird to hear this song and not need to shove a matchbook in a tape player lol
Great version.
After seeing, "Alien Nation" I went out and bought this album. Been in love with Jane's since. :)
Me, too.
Primo 👌🏼 … still got the worn out cassette … what I wouldn’t give to go back to those days to relive my newly found love … 🥰Jane’s Addiction🥰 … J.A. FOREVER!!! 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼
This entire recording is freaking legendary
Thanks Rick, these songs are so amazing played together.
great live band-saw them early 90s-wish i was young again
jeffking4269 great band live. It with you on the gettin old. Damn49thisyear.
Man that fade from roc n roll into sympathy- my fave.
Third time listening. Can't stop. This cd was my jam. Back in 91
That fade is why I uploaded the video, it's one of the highlights of the album and I couldn't believe it hadn't been uploaded yet.
Lollapalooza #1 in Waterloo NJ, absolute magic....
Covering Rock 'n' Roll is a hard ask, unfortunately it shows....blew Sympathy outta the water though, amazing!!!
This version of Sympathy is the sole reason I began liking the song. Jane’s Addiction simply did it better by a wide margin. It’s not rocket science…
This is a cover song I still consider to this day
something about that fine fine muzak
I was at this Gig
Best of an era
It's cut off at the end of these tracks but Always loved the slowed down crowd effect into Chip Away for the closer.
Thanks Rick I needed that this morning! 🙏
This cover of "rock n roll" sticks to the Velvets' original. Other versions (Runaways, Alice Cooper) patteren themselves after Mitch Ryders' 1971 rendition.
Rock n' Roll, Baby!
I will always love Janes Addiction
Sold the 2 turntables and bought a Bass! Changed my path.
Fantastic band,, thanks
This was my senior year musical!!

I'm a Zeppelin fan but Jane's is my addiction
This is for life, when it gets boring as hell, totally tubular🎉😊
Amazing stuff
...i remember hunting this album out..on c.d!!.. O called tower records...the wall....slipped disk in valley stream...i found it in broadway mall sam goody...there was one copy!!! "HA HA"".. I paid for that one no 5 finger discount😁( they put them big plastic pieces over c.d)😁
If you don’t like Jane’s Addiction... adios.

How often do you visit S.F.?
True story. I saw them in 1991 at Lollapalooza. They were the last to play so it was at night when they hit the stage. It rained most of the afternoon at the fest but the bands still played. Nice welcome too beautiful 🎶
I wore this cassette out.

LOVE THIS VERSION !
Best non album ever.
First time I went to a proper gig at Brixton academy they blew me away still ain't seen nothing to match maybe nick cave
I was at that one too - on ritual tour!!! I class that as my favourite, if not best gig I ever went to🎉
Astoria the year or so before was great too. I think primus supported at the Astoria🎉
That weird alien girl on stage while James Caan listens to Jane's addiction in alien nation
Hard to believe this was their first release
When music was Music....goddamn...
just hear an interview on n.p.r ... reed! luv ya man
Perry held a generals rank.
Yes
David Michael Navarro! Listen to the guitar work this is what put Janes on the map…
Love this so much and this album and further genres it inspired as well as musicians but..Perry is still and Dave Navarro meh where/why'd it go wrong, this song particularly reminds me of every blind melon song. Love both
I speak from experience, heroin, heroin is where it went wrong
Blind melon sounds like this. Jane was pre blind melon. Perry lost his ability to hold a tune a long time ago. Dave is a buji tattoo head.
Everyone talking about sympathy for the devil no one about rock n roll
I remember way back when I added the version of rock 'n' roll to a mixtape I made, and it was the introduction song of Jane's Addiction. I played everyone because I loved it so damn much.
That quick funk lick right at 3:03 … 🤟
all right

Jenny said when she was just five years old
You know there's nothing happenin' at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothing going down at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll
Despite all the amputations
You could just dance to a rock 'n' roll station
And it was alright
Jenny said when she was just five years old
My parents are gonna be the death of us all
Two TV sets and two Cadillac cars
Ain't gonna help us at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She don't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll
Despite all the computations
You could just dance to a rock 'n ' roll station
And it was alright
Sometimes everythings allright all good.
This is my early teenageness!
nice!
ill have to buy the new lou bio
I would have to agree, thos was there best album. Also, AFTER that first Lollapalooza, their live quality began to diminish.
Fugazi just came to mind
Cuando muera kiero que me pongan este discazooo
I agree
Why is there an ad in the middle of the song?
....ohfuckyeah!!!...
What happened to Dave Navarro...owns this.
