I listened to Jane's Addiction during the whole trip. It was a two hour drive. I had a great time driving and I especially loved this song when it played.
One of my favorites from Jane's. I remember a late night in downtown Santa Barbara, California ~1997 at my friends house and in that in between that final wake and slipping into sleep state around 4am (it was late August, so it was hot and the windows were open) and a car outside at the stop light was playing 'Then She Did' and it was the mellow part when Perry sings 'pulled from a headless shell'. It was so surreal and a moment that has stuck with me all these years. My most favorite band of all time.
Absolutely bone chillingly beautiful a song written about a friend who committed suicide - the mysterious Xiola Blue - and then a request at the end to say hello to his mother who also committed suicide... so I understand... ;)
RITUAL was, and still is, one of the most influential albums of my life. It has always found it's way into conscious and subconscious life. When I first heard it, I remember thinking it was aggressive... violent...sexy...funny...freaky...poetic...all while, musically, being as original and exciting as anything had ever heard before and since. I was 20 when it came out. I still listen to it now and I STILL get the same feelings from it years later. It also happens to be my favorite album cover of ALL TIME. Jane's Addiction is MY Led Zeppelin.
That album has such a special place in my heart. The start of the 90s. I was 18. Just started experimenting with different substances. And listening to all the latest music. We would play the album then flip the tape over and replay it all night long. I went to some amazing places in my mind. I don't have the words to express how truly special it all was.
I love this the most about Perry and the way he allows his vocals to be an instrumental part of the musical composition which is so much like a surreal jazz piece. Jane’s Addiction was a musical experience I missed being a mother to a family in the 90s, but when I was able to continue in my life as my own person, I discovered them way too late! I may be fortunate to be able to get into their 90s vibe starting in my frickin’ 50s! I dream of Perry, literally like I knew him over 30 hrs ago and I was at the ocean with him and we were just hanging out and becoming friends. It freaks me out yet seems possible for some weird reason.
I actually think his voice was a little flat and pitchy this, show and most of the shows I've heard from this period, best he ever sounded was Hammerstein ballroom, on his day he had the best voice in rock for me, powerful, really cut through and already powerful sound from the other 3 ...

Allan Ostermann I am so sorry your mother died that way and I believe anyone who commits suicide isn't in their right mind when doing it they are depressed or worse and it is hard to fathom and it hurts too. My cousin's husband killed himself 10 years ago his two oldest kids are in their early 20's now and his son is 15 and the youngest about 10 she was 18 months when he passed she has zero memory of him and it bothers her knowing that and the son doesn't remember much. One of the older daughters was nauseous and almost hyperventilating during his funeral. He killed him b/c of finances ridiculous really and selfish of him and his reasons. I don't think all people who commit suicide are selfish in doing it cause if they have a nervous breakdown etc. they are mentally broken and need to get well again and it sadness to see any of this happen to anyone. The family suffers the worst from the aftermath. I just hope that you heal from this in your heart and knowing your mother is in heaven, poor thing it breaks my heart knowing someone like her had to feel this was the only solution God bless her and you!

Those were great days when you could see great bands at different clubs throughout Hollywood. I saw Jane's Addiction at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on two Saturdays back to back. Club Scream shows and the 88 to 89 new year show were my favorites. They played a show at irvine meadows with Social Distortion and X.

My favorite song of theirs. Just epic, haunting, momentous, synchronous, classical and utterly profound. It builds and culminates in the peak of the greatest B side in rock music. The favt that they were disintegrating as a band at be this time reveals the depth of their music rather than obscures it.

Man Eric Avery’s base playing is so sweet. I’ve never heard anything like it. When Eric Avery went so did Jane’s Addiction. They kicked him out it was like slapping themselves in the face.
I love Ritual so much. Ever since it came out. I lived in LA, and it just represents the whole experience of the early 90s there. I've always thought of "Side 2" of this album to be very Zeppelinesque (sorry to use an esque).
I've always thought of both Ritual and Nothings Shocking as Zeppelinesque. I remember telling some coworkers that when I was turning them on to JA. They thought I was crazy. I always put it down to their not REALLY knowing Zeppelin. Sounds snobbish, I know. Whatever. Taste is so nebulous.
dLimboStick Thank you. I don't know chords or notes, I know the feel. And "Side 2" definitely feels like it could have been outtakes from Physical Graffiti. And that's a real compliment. How many bands can even be compared to Led Zeppelin? Yep, other than Justin Bieber, no one :)
I think that if you know both bands music, you must feel that Zeppelinesque sound on Jane's Addiction. Days ago I was turning my friends to JA we started with both albums you mention and they noticed that Led Zeppelin influence.
Allan Ostermann I feel Ritual is closer the Zep's Houses of the Holy album, but again, opinion on art is so subjective. That's the beauty of art. It touches everyone differently.
WOW what a track. Im originally from England but moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s. I remember when listening to the radio back then thinking this band is the mUtts Nuts. Jayne says is probably one of my favourite alternative rock records ever . Way ahead of thier time. Brilliant. Paved the way for alot of bands.
Exactly. Only, without the pretentiousness that has overcome a certain other Art Rock quartet out of Los Angeles that came after Jane’s disbanded in ‘91.
Bravo Matteo, complimenti!
When I watched this video I felt I could see Perry pouring his soul into the lyrics--at certain points his expression is of someone very immersed in the music and full of deep emotion. Then I read it was about a former love of his who died of an overdose, and also about his mother's suicide. That explained a lot about the depth of this moving performance.
The prior song to this on the album is Three Days where they have just let rip big time. This song is about restraint for the most part. I haven't listened to it in quite a while and I had forgotten just how powerful it is.
The best Janes song out there. This performance cannot be topped. Been listening to Janes for 20yrs. Perry"s voice isnt the same now but he is still the man. Along with Dave,Eric and Stephen of course there would be no Janes Addiction without them. Flea did a decent job subbing for Eric but the magic isnt there. The Hammerstein performance is great too.
Best comment I ever saw on youtube was for this song, some dude mentioned at a particular part of the song, Perry with his hands up was "channeling the gods", so apt and so intense for that part of the song / video.... the band are legendary... Perry is immortal....
Jane's Addiction always brings me back to the days in college, having "fun" with the art school girls I was dating. There will never be music like this again.

A friend asked me back in the early 90s if I could tape record this show (on VHS! MTV 120 minutes ow yeah!) and I had never heard of Jane's Addiction and this mesmerizing figure called Perry Farellseen, but the band and their enigmatic lead singer with such crushing charisma truly was a revelation to me! Felt paralyzed and considered the show as a gift from God and Satan joining forces, I listened and watched it over and over (as in 100 times till the tape) till my mom asked: shouldn't you study for your anatomy exam for tomorrow? I was a med student back then who was totally into this kind of miraculous eye-opening Art; later on I got lost as a fully trained MD in Detroit Techno and its many following waves. My lovely mom was wondering why she had sent me to piano lessons from the age of 7 till 19. Still love Chopin and Rachmaninov of course! Wow, speaking of a broad musical eclectic education if I look back to all of it right now... 🙂

If we don't get a "LIKE/DISLIKE" count, can't we geet a "LOVE" button?! 🥰🤘✌
Man Eric Avery’s base playing is so sweet. I’ve never heard anything like it. When Eric Avery went so did Jane’s Addiction. They kicked him out it was like slapping themselves in the face.
He will forever be the true genius of janes. And ironically they are making new album
Really …. Ummmm no not that genius actually
the magic comes from Avery's bass
Avery is like the james jamerson of buzz rock .
True
One of the best rock bands to ever walk out on stage in my opinion... They invented fully started the alternative rock scene
@gogalevus Truths like fists
Dave NAVARRO!!!
Love how this song builds and builds.......Brilliance!!
Allan Ostermann
I feel Ritual is closer the Zep's Houses of the Holy album, but again, opinion on art is so subjective. That's the beauty of art. It touches everyone differently.
So true. I'm glad that other people understand the beauty of that second side. Oh, how I love vinyl.
this should be a college class on rock music pecause it is perfect music
Mamma mia che nostalgia... io c'ero quella sera a Milano... Grazie per avermi fatto rivivere una serata indimenticabile
one of the BEST songs to listen to while on mushrooms...!!!!
Perry, you and your music will always be a significant part of my life.
My favorite song ever. This performance was Jane's at their pinnacle. Perfect and hauntingly beautiful
Always love this song this version, this show, this video.
One of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard by the most amazing band in the world
Damn! This song makes me so sad. :'(
Crazy how he can perform this song over and over so we can enjoy it while it has clear meaning to him.
The vocal effects are excellent
Genuinely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. This version captures the raw essence of it.
The drugs , the sound , the emotion , the story , .... You can feel so much in this song
❤ This Song ,makes me Cry Classic Girl Play loud Forever
In 32 yo and I still love them
When rock meets art.
Exactly. Only, without the pretentiousness that has overcome a certain other Art Rock quartet out of Los Angeles that came after Jane’s disbanded in ‘91.
Bravo Matteo, complimenti!
This is pure magic....
This is so good. Even without the instrumentation I can still hear it. And yes, magical
I love this song gives me chills every time...its just magical 👑👑👑💜💜💜💜💕💞💞💞
Wow! What was then ........what will never be again......ever. This IS the very best Jane's Addiction you're gonna find! Awesome, beautiful song.
Simply brilliant... This band was simply brilliant.....
This is just so beautiful!!!
Not a recommendation by any means, but back in the late 80's early 90's listening to JA while on heroin was just about the perfect collaboration.
Most incredible song of Jane's ever!!!
The most underrated Jane's song IMO. "Now the nameless dwell, they hold the key and turn the knob." One of the greatest lines ever written.
The prior song to this on the album is Three Days where they have just let rip big time. This song is about restraint for the most part. I haven't listened to it in quite a while and I had forgotten just how powerful it is.
I WAS THERE. GREAT BANDS, GREAT TIMES!!!
Kristin Tay Look at the live videos from 86 and 87.
Hammerstein was theee best live performance evet.
I was 16 at this concert, no clue how lucky i was
Was it as cool as it seemed?
I saw Nirvana Pink Floyd TOOL Rage AIC ect in the early 90's but this was before and seems to have been the Coolest!
@@amplify1802 i was in a trance watching, immediate fan , i met a smoking hot blonde perfect summer night
I remember the cassette cover was blank after ritual came out because they said the picture was to explicit or some shit.
SO glad i bought this Bootleg CD from a South Street RecordShop in '91__ JANE's, Live in MILAN,__1990___ a prized possession, TH-cam can't TOUCH the Entire incendiary show.... their PRIME years, for real
What a great great song. The opening part is lush and hypnotic rythmn, space and texture.
I looked up the definition of music and this band popped up
This is the BEST version of this song!! Drugs particularly Herion is a Hell of a drug!!
