Fun fact: The American version of Partners in Time is actually harder. Mainly the bosses have considerably more HP making them damage sponges especially since most boss fights in this game has a gimmick that restricts damage to a specific phase/form/attack/etc.
5:38 surprisingly enough, you can also use Ice Flowers on Kamek as well. if he ever gets debuffed, and then splits, only the real one will show the debuffs.
1:06 oh by the way, you can actually die to both Baby Bowser and Shrooboid Brat tutorial battles so it does eliminate 2 kills. I only knew about this when I was playing a hard mode rom hack of Partners in time ( I streamed it on my Twitch channel, uploaded to my TH-cam). However, the only way to do that, is to fail every single attack and dodge. Now, I don't know if it is still possible in the OG game, but that might eliminate an enemy or 2.
Not possible in the vanilla game. Baby Bowser leaves you at 3 HP since it is programed to automatically end after 5 turns, and Junior Shrooboid leaves you at 2 HP.
I did a run very similar to this a few years back, and red shells and flowers are BUSTED. Once you unock flowers, you can just absolutely BLAST through the entire game, and a ton of the bosses are weak to ice too. I destroyed the shield around Younger Princess Shroob and then managed to keep a red shell combo going for long enough to defeat her in that one turn. If you want your run to be extra hellish, try making it so only Baby Luigi can gain experience, by making him the only character alive when gaining experience (once you obtain him of course). You would be surprised how little it changes the run.
6:53 supposedly if you use Ice Flowers on the Eggs in Sunnycides boss fight, it does more damage to the eggs than other attacks. and can take out multiple at a time. Although that was probably the hard mode hack added onto my game, I believe it might be the same in the OG. The Eggs only have around 30 HP.
This is giving me the motivation to complete my old minimalist run (including not using any items). And allowing glitches. I basically gave up because I started struggling with doing gate skip again after failing to avoid an enemy, and then the fear of the final bosses, knowing it would likely take hours of perfect gameplay to kill them.
I did originally consider a minimalist playthrough as you described, but then I realized that I want to keep at least SOME of my sanity, so I decided against it.
the interesting part about Elder Shrooboid is that when doing say a low-level, no items(Bros items are excluded cuz they're literally required, and Mrs Thwomp is the only chance you have to farm them), no equipment+no badges, Stache only run of Mario and Luigi Partner in time, which's called "Nerve-Mode" is: Elder Shrooboid's Spin attack, I noticed that Elder Shrooboid's spin attack will either: 1. take exactly 4 counter-attack hits to stop 2. take more than 4, which, if so, and it more often than not, will happen, will be completely impossible to avoid, which can force a reset that fights essentially a pretty big rng check, which's really surprising considering how easy it usually would be. I like how its actually more dangerous because of its spin-to-win attack being potentially an unavoidable attack. Luigi at level 18 will survive Elder Shrooboid's phase 1 spin-to-win attack if its POW is down via Ice Flower, but only that 1 time. the part I found neat bout the current run I'm doing of Nerve Mode Challenge is Mrs. Thwomp is the only time you have to stock up on green shells and ice flowers, which you absolutely need to do, otherwise its a softlock. as Green Shell's the only real damaging item, Ice Flower's utility and you have to preserve the infinite duration bros items as much as possible I can absolutely confirm, having beaten this, that Level 23 for all 4 of da bros is the absolute sweet-spot for this nerve-mode challenge due to Pit's level scaling. at level 19 I can also confirm you can beat Elder Princess Shroob's 1st phase only. 2nd phase is what I deem impossible at level 19 or lower without a TAS, since the damage to her foot is far too low and her 3-leg sweep can become unavoidable. meaning you'll just lose when that happens.
I remember doing a no equipment run of this game and it was tough but fun all the way up to shroob castle, where every enemy one shot me. I gave up after about halfway through the castle though ahaha. Grats on the run! I'm looking forward to immediately watching your BiS run!
Dude thank you so much really i was stuck in the elder princess shroob fight but i used the equips u used for the final fight and i did it really easily thank you so much you just got yourself a new subscriber
Glad you were able to do it! I remember having a lot of trouble on that fight when I first played it. Younger me is probably looking at me with envy considering I did it with low stats XD
@@CallenderMan i was struggling a lot with my old strategy. I just used Luigi to spam healing items and stat raising items and pretty much only attacked with Mario. As a result (since Mario has the lower defensive stats) Mario died all the time and i couldn't even damage the elder princess shroob a lot because i had to use luigi's turn to heal mario, then it was the princess shroob's turn, then mario died AGAIN and it just kept going like that
@@CallenderMan lol also i insisted on using red shells all the time cuz i managed to defeat the younger princess shroob in a single turn with it. I've actually done this challenge on the PAL version a few years ago, only difference is that most endgame bosses have waaay less HP and that I forced myself to up only speed on level ups which is pretty much the most useless stat in the game. I have planned on doing this with every game and I have already done this on Bowser's Inside Story (the gear in end game is ridiculous if you optimize it, Mario in that run hit as hard as it would in my normal playthrough). I have attempted this on Paper Jam but I don't want to now, turns out if you enter a battle during a toad mission you can't run from it, at least from what I remember of it. All the other games should be fine though, not looking towards Dream Team because that one is going to be brutal.
Stashe is surprisingly good for the babies if you level it up and equip lucky badges on them. You can get smth like 20% lucky chance (about 30% with the Lucky A badge) if you have 60+ in your stashe stat, which is amazing for multi hit moves like the Trampoline.
God I remeber I did this cuz I was scared of fighting enemies for whatever reason. Only difference I only upgraded stache cuz I saw crit chance and makes things cheaper. I was a dumb child
I've recently tried to do that challenge but I was playing on the european version but there few differences I have noticed from my experience - Mrs. Thwomp was to me the 2nd worst boss of the game since she has "630 hp" but for some reason she never died, I spent almost 2 hours to defeat her and I've probably made her losing around 2000 hp (I seriously don't understand that boss works) - All the 3 princess shroob fights are immuned to Ice Flowers so they were totally useless. I took finally to me near about 7 hours to beat these 3 fights. And for some reasons Pocket Chomp is to me very more powerful than the trampoline (making Trampoline the weakest attack). However, despite boss having less health than in US version, some stats are rearranged, the worst being on the final boss the foot having 500 hp instead of 400 and 350 instead of 200 for the tentacles (meaning that tentacles barely were absent, which was a pain)
lmao this is how I used to play this game as a kid because I was scared of fighting enemies. I somehow made it to princess shroob with mario and luigi at like level 17 and about 75 health each. I still have this save file and while it is technically possible to beat, my inventory has so few bros items that even getting to the second shroob fight takes 45 minutes lol. Really gave me flashbacks of trying to side-step enemies in the overworld and spamming jumps on boss fights.
I'm surprised that you reached level 17, I fought basically every enemy in the game besides the shroob castle enemies and reached the end at level 14 and around 50 health
So I also did this run (on my TH-cam channel sorry self plug) and one issue that I’m surprised you never mentioned or maybe you just never had the issue was coin management. When I got to the final boss, I never had nearly enough coins to get through it so I actually went back to toad town and actually did the money glitch. For those who don’t know, the money glitch is where you sell all your items except one expensive gear piece and then have 99 mushrooms in your inventory (or just the cheapest item). Then you sell the gear piece and then you can frame perfectly press A right after you get the coins and the game will allow you to sell mushrooms at the same price you were selling the gear piece. I had to use that for the final boss to beat it. But coin management throughout the playthrough was really tough. Did you experience this problem at all?

a more valid strategy to killing Shroob commander is to equip the shroom pants and mushroom slacks from toad town, then sell everything you have besides your strongest bro moves and buy as many mushrooms as possible, the shroom pants and mushroom slacks give the wearer more pow for every mushroom based item in your inventory, mushrooms, mushroom drops, and 1-UPs and all their variants add to this counter, I don't know what the actual multiplier is for a max stack of every shroom, but it can result in killing the final boss in just 2 turns at level 22, so that would have made this much easier
That's not true, at least in US version, both of those pants give 0 pow. I tested the difference between no equipment and wearing shroom slacks on US version and it's the same damage.
@@TheMistermastermario I might have had the description of the equipment wrong, because I played the game again recently and the description was that the less mushroom you had, the more damage you do. @@CallenderMan are you also going to do this challenge with dream team and paper jam
@@miloseal25 yeah, but those games are significantly longer, especially dream team, so I’ll probably have a few other challenge videos in between
@@CallenderMan OK cool this series deserves more support its so good there need to be more Mario and luigi challenges
@@CallenderMan Will both the Bowser kill count and M&L Kill count be separated? So like:
"Bowser Kill Count: (X number)"
"Mario & Luigi Kill count: (X number)"
Or will these kill counts be together?
I watched this video for the 12th time now (still not boring) :)
im going to sub and like so this video can blow up
you are so underrated
I love it when this game gets some love 🤩
Honestly, same. This was one of the first games that I had ever played and it's still one of my favorites
I doing on emulator and like to battle each enemy in area lol
Bros items i use if more then 1 enemy if needed
shroob castle took 2 hours and elder princess shroob took 1 hour to beat on the first try i hate shroob castle
pls do longer videos its way too short it should be like a hour
I guess you'll be happy to know that the Bowser's Inside Story video is gonna be like 40 minutes
So a speedrun lol?
Basically, the main difference being that I suck at the game lol
