Home remedy for rabbit eye infection

  • Rabbit care is so important, whether you are raising rabbits for pets, or for food for your family. Eye infections in young rabbits is very common, usually called Nest Box Eye. This home remedy is very easy and cheap as you only need tea to clean out the eye.
    It's best when you can catch the infection early as the eye can get matted shut, which happened in this case, which the rabbit had the eye infection when I got her. The infection was well rooted and so took 10 days to clean it out.

    I am so glad I found this video! Our bunny has had an eye infection for a while. We were able to get drops for him but it seemed to only half work. His eye was still draining. We started the tea cleaning and we are on day three and his eye is SO much better already! Thank you so much for sharing! 🐇❤️

      green tea has the best antiviral properties, then ookla and then black tea - all work fine, but green is a bit better@@Noorulain829

    Amazing tips!! Thank you so much, my bunny started to get watery red eyes, I had no clue what it was or what to do, found this video and in 3 days for 2x a day he got SO MUCH better almost fully healed

    Grateful to find this, I'm trying now on my little boy. Vets didn't know if it was myxo or not so giving round the clock care focusing on his eyes 😔

      myxomatosis is untreatable so I hope it's not that. It's very rare now so cross fingers. You should know within a couple to three days if just an infection of the eye.

    I just brought my 6 1/2 yr-old rabbit to the ER Saturday bc of an eye infection/ulcer I came to find out he had. I came home to find his eye red and swollen shut though I'm unsure why. My buns are freedom so I don't know if they got into a tiff. I have medicine for him now but I will certainly keep this in my back pocket. Better than dropping over $300!

    Fantastic, I'll try this....I have bought some gel from the pet shop....it's made it worse! It looks all aggrievated above the eye and below and its been a few days since using it. There isn't and has never been any gunk though, just a bit of a watery eye onto her fur. Would you still recommend the tea dabbing? If so for how long please? Thankyou🙂

      I would still use the tea as it's natural and would cause no harm. I would use it twice per day for 3-4 days. Thank you!

    I’m worried about caffeine from the black tea entering her system. Even decaf has a lot of caffeine in it for a bunny. Thoughts?

      As this is a wash, the amount of caffeine that could enter the body though the eye will be insignificant, as the eye is closed as you are washing out the infection.

      @user-ps5xq2ym2g yes it's just cooled boiled water and a teabag brewed for as long as possible but make sure it's not too warm I ended up using 2 to adjust because it wasn't as strong as needed

      I don't think camomile will work as I don't think it has much tannins. Just use a cheap black tea.

    My rabbit is having this only his eye turned all white. I took him to the vet got some eye drops but it still looks bad

      Unfortunately it's probable that he's gone blind in that eye, but as long as the other one of ok, it's not a big deal for a pet rabbit. In the wild, the rabbit would last long as prey, as he wouldn't see any predators from that side.

      @@jocelynn8849 black tea has the highest tannin concentration, while green tea is often credited with having the lowest. So, I'd stick with a black tea.

      Yes, just dip the cotton in the tea and squeeze out some so it's not soaking, but wet. So simple.

      Just any black tea. Cheapest you can find will work just great. There are probably more tannins in cheap tea, and it's the tannins you need to clean.

      Definitely an infection. The tannins in the tea should work, but it's not a miracle treatment, but does help with most eye problems. I use it on my eyes too. Being a natural treatment, it won't make things worse.

      @@madelineportillo5063 sometimes of the infection was caught late, the hair can fall out. It will grow back. I had one kitten that it became blind in the eye, because it was caught to late. It didn't stop him being a sweet rabbit.

      No. Actually, the really cheap black tea is the best as it has a lot of tannins, which is really good at killing the bacteria in the eye.

    My bunny is 2 1/2yrs old. His left eye is watering for 6mnths. I used ear drop, medicine etc as per doctor's advice but nothing work. Pl advise me

      The medicinal properties in tea are the tannins. This will kill off the bacteria in the infection.

      Could be a scratch. Lots of things can cause eye problems.

      I have never tried it, but I know that black tea has a lot more tannins, and it's that that helps with the infection.

      If you have nothing else, yes, but it will take time. Try a broad spectrum antibiotic. Rabbits don't really like drops but it won't harm them.

I am gonna keep doing it until the infected spot under the upper eye lid disappears. BTW, I found Q-tips is easier than cotton pads. I also turn her upper eye lid over and use the wet tip to gently soak the infected spot,

    I was wondering , what kind of tea did you use? I’ve never had a rabbit be sick before I recently just got a new baby bunny and her poor eye is infected. never dealt with it and no vet around me will answer :(

      It's just a very cheap black tea. The cheap teas have a lot of tannins, and it's this that helps the infection. Nest box eye, as it's sometimes referred to, is a common ailment for baby bunnies.

    Only if I had known this earlier 😢😢 I lost my baby within few hours he got infected, I couldn't even contact a vet when he showed the symptoms it was midnight 😢😢 I miss my baby so much 😭😭

      I have used warm and cold tea, and usually clean it twice per day but if you can't, then once is better than not cleaning.

    I just used this remedy and got what I thought was discharge out.

      I've had rabbits with that, and it's just a discharge. Clean it several times per day and it should still clear up, but if it's bad the rabbit could go blind in that eye. That's ok though, as long as it's a pet as it won't see predators.

      Tea will work on all small infections in the eye. This rabbit had this infection when I picked her up. I would not have normally seen this as bad. But it just shows you how well it works.

    Thats a different rabbit at the end. the nose coloration is different. Rabbits coats can change but not that fast.

      I'll be honest and never had a rabbit with an eye ulcer, but I would give it a go as it's natural and won't harm it. Please let me know how it goes :)
