- In this video, we explain our home remedy for treating Gastrointestinal Stasis for bunnies. This DIY treatment is for an emergency situation where you aren’t able to bring your rabbit to a vet quick enough to treat their GI stasis. We use a combination of simethicone, ranitidine, and low-dose aspirin to get a bunny’s gut moving.
One More Venture is a suburban homestead based out of a small urban part of New England. After taking my rabbit to the emergency vet, I was made aware that rabbits can only tolerate about 30 mg of Asprin DAILY, and that this amount can cause kidney and liver issues. Please keep this in mind when attempting at home treatments, and if you do take your rabbit to the vet tell them everything you have given your rabbit, as there may be drug interactions with their treatment plan versus this at home attempt.

Thanks for pointing this out. Again, this home remedy is intended to be a worst case scenario alternative, or if you don’t live near a vet who sees rabbits. We made this video with the intent to help people save their rabbits if at all possible, but it doesn’t always work, as much as we try to save our fur babies. My rabbits have never had issues with the amount of aspirin recommended in this video, but feel free to do a lower dose of 30mg to play it safe.
I live in a small town and all the vets don’t see rabbits, even the big city near me had no one who could see my rabbit. He’s 11 years old and came down with GI stasis two days ago and you just saved him. He’s back to eating and jumping around and playing. I cannot thank you enough from the ends of the Earth for this wonderful video. Bless your souls.

It's so hard and pretty much beyond words, so I felt your pain when you posted about your bunny passing away. I have two Holland lop sisters and they are still young (less than a year old). My son wanted them, so I gave in and bought them, but honestly I think I love them more than he does. They have my whole living room as their domain and I would do anything for them! I don't know what I would do if something happened to them. I would feel like maybe I did something wrong too, but you didn't ❤️ What was your bunny's name? Mine are named Choccy and Milk (courtesy of my 11 year old boy🤣). I’m having this issue right now with my rabbit it’s been up for 24 hours and she has not touched any of her favorite vegetables or her favorite snacks. I’m extremely concerned because this is happened before but it never lasted this long and I’ve got her since birth. She is my baby. My whole world. I am praying that this works as I go to the grocery store right now to pick up the medication‘s

@@goodidea8730 she’s doing much better now. Took her to the ER. Had her in the vet for two whole days barely eating and pooping. Some medication, and some lovings (and home medication) and she was better. Currently keeping close eye on her lol. I got camera for inside. 😭😭

I currently have my bunny in the ER/ he got GI on the 5th He felt so weak during the second day He managed through today Its tiresome and scary I stayed up 2 nights only getting little sleep watching over my bunny, giving him belly rubs He started to eat on his own / willingly taking food He still is grinding his teeth. where I took him to the ER this morning its really far because here in IL we have exotic vets not close to certain parts of IL,@@markiebear
You just saved my bunny!!! He had stopped eating for 6 hours and wasn’t moving. I couldn’t get a vet appointment as well. I found this video and followed the instructions. Even after 6 hours of giving him these meds, he still wasn’t eating. Then I tried to force feed him through a syringe (mashed some pellets with water)….he barely took some. I was so worried! But I kept up the medicine regiment and he was starting to look better but still wasn’t eating….I also gave him a belly massage and encouraged him to walk a bit. Within 24 hours of starting this regiment, he started eating!! Now he’s back to being himself. Running around and eating normally.
I also can’t emphasize the importance of a proper belly massage. I realized I was doing it wrong. You have to move his belly and his cecum side to side. The cecum isn’t all the way until the tail end of his body…right before his genitals. And you massage by gently applying some pressure up and moving his underside side to side. After I did that to him, he immediately started eating again. It also helps to pick up his back legs so they are off the floor and are hanging in air…with his front legs still resting on the floor. That also dislodges things and helps them feel better.
Also, when you offer food…offer a variety of different options. It’s important to offer things he’s already used to. And celery is really good in hydrating them.
I really thought he wasn’t going to make it but thanks to your video and other videos on how to massage a bunny with GI stasis, he’s doing great. Thanks so much for making this video!!!

I lost my bunny today. She was 15 months old. I have never loved anything as much as her. Her second time with stasis. The first time I got her to the vet in time. She started showing same symptoms two days ago, so I did the protocol and she bounced back. She was curled up next to me in bed last night licking my face. Tonight she went downhill again and started the protocol again plus critical care food. She died in my arms tonight. I am so mad at the universe right now.

AN IMPORTANT TIP I WANT TO SHARE WITH ALL BUNNY OWNERS! When our bunny was 2 years old he developed GI stasis. The emergency vet told us to give him a small serving of fresh pineapple everyday -- not canned or dried, but fresh. He explained that fresh pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which would help break down fur that rabbits ingest from grooming. We followed his instructions. Our beloved bunny passed away at 13, and in all those years never got GI stasis again.

THIS SAVED MY BUNNY! Thank you so much. The anti acid tablets don’t have to be ranitidine. I mixed my concoction with a VERY TINY bit of banana baby food with cherry flavored gas X as well as cherry flavored aspirin (low dose)! My bunny was better in HOURS. Super thankful for this.

Thank you so much for this video!! When I went to feed my bunny last night he would t eat and was miserable. I found your video and quickly went and got what I needed from the store.
I was able to get 81mg aspirin and I got 10mg Famotidine for the acid controller.
I already had Simethicome and had given him that. I mixed up 1 aspirin with half a Famitidine in warm water and gave it to him. 2 hours later I gave him another dose, minus the aspirin.
Within 4 hours he was back to normal and is doing great today!

Hey yall I had a GI stasis scare this summer and this video helped so much. We did end up seeing a vet to get fluids- but he said this was a great home remedy any time you think your bun has gas discomfort. BUT- he said to leave the aspirin out.
I've used this trick a few times- (he never needed all of it), with any signs of gas- early signs of digestive issues, and within 1/2 hour my buns back to his silly happy self.

I just lost my bunny a few hours ago and I’ve been crying more than when I lost my grandpa I’m so confused he was so healthy and was acting fine until this morning and by the time I was able to help him it was too late. THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! This saved my bunny, Oliver. We woke up on the Fourth of July and realized he wouldn't eat and was barely moving. We could not find a vet that was open, as it was a holiday. But I found your video and ran to the drugstore that afternoon. Ranitidine is no longer available, so I got Cimetidine instead. We dosed him every couple of hours. In the middle of the night, I checked on him, and he was finally eating and moving around! I also ended up getting critical care for him and bringing him to the vet (which really only confirmed the diagnosis), and it's now 10 days later and he seems to be as good as new! So, really, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

I lost my bunny 6 months ago and I’m still not over it. As soon as I saw that he wasn’t eating as much as usual I brought an Uber took him to the vet because the closest vet from my home was 1 hour away. Unfortunately for me the vet just happened be unreliable. He told us to just give him pineapple juice and force feed him when we asked him if we had the food so we could buy it he didn’t and he gave us 14 ml syringes for an 8 pound bunny. Luckily for us we made sure to feed him more. We was better and Jumping and eating again so we decided to stop force feeding and we continued our normal routine. But that was our one error the vet didn’t give us any instructions on how long to force feed, how much to force feed, signs he was getting better, when we should get a check up. All we got was hundreds of dollars to pay. I looked on the internet for sources and that was when I found the exact amount we were supposed to feed him and the information that after he starts getting better you have to continue to force feed at least a little for 2 extra weeks. Looking back I wish we had gone to the vet that we got him neutered at which was 2 hours away. He got sick on Valentine’s Day and died exactly 2 weeks later because of that one fatal mistake because we didn’t know any better. My story is just advice for anyone who might read this that sometimes your expect your vet to help your pet get better but that isn’t always the case. Look on forums for other pet owners experiences and watch videos on how to care for your pet and how find the exact amount to feed your pet based on their weight and have express shipping or the tools needed for your pet at hand (critical care and you can look online for what owners used to reduce stomach gas) because sometimes you could do everything right but your vet won’t help you the way you expected them to. If I could go back in time I would have spent any amount of money to help him get better he was truly like a dream even in him last minutes, while I held him in my hands and petted him he purred.

This is crazy! My bunny is a year old. Yesterday she was fine. A little slower than usually because usually she's so crazy and happy. But today she's the complete opposite 💔. I posted on my fb bunny groups and they all said GI stasis. This is exactly what she's doing. Except her poops are coming out more stinky and wet. But I think taking away pellets and just straight hey for a while will help. Thank you! Hopefully I'll find everything tomorrow since everything's closed here right now 😭.

It does appear to be more potent than ranitidine, so I would reccomend only doing a dose of 5mg of the famotidine when mixing up our home remedy for your rabbit.
I’m going to get a baby rabbit later this year and have been watching a lot of bunny videos. I’m of the opinion that pellets are not good food mainly because they contain oil. I don’t eat processed oils any more because they cause gastrointestinal damage or leaky gut. There are no pellets in the wild. I’m sure it’s fun for the owner to feed them on a snuffle mat or by hand, but ultimately they are not healthy. I’m going to use florals on my snuffle mat instead.
I’d be interested to hear how that works! We try to give our rabbits the smallest amount of pellets, like a tablespoon or two a day, because I agree it’s not natural and it can cause problems like GI stasis.
So my bunny is still drinking water and eating a little bit of hay every once in awhile. She is also cleaning herself, but I am hearing the gargling or bubbling in her tummy when she lays down lounging like a normal bun relaxing.

Usually a day or two. Make sure your bunny has access to unlimited hay, not a lot of pellets (carbs, which will slow down his digestive tract and causes GI stasis). Once he’s continuing to eat hay throughout the day, he should be back to normal and you can start feeding a small amount of pellets once a day again!
i hope you're able to get back to me in time but how long until they usually start using the bathroom again? my bunny has been eating a very small amount of hay + basil since we started giving him the medications but he still has not pooped (he has peed several times though). thank you for the video + helpful advice!!
Sorry for the very delayed response.. I hope your bunny recovered! I’m not sure how long it will take your bunny to start using the bathroom again, I’m sure it varies based on the rabbit and how much water they drink…

Hi, I noticed you published this less than a year ago; however, I cant find ranitidine anywhere... Not even cvs brand. Based on what I read online, it seems that sometime in 2019, the FDA made it so this drug isnt available anymore. I was curious how you were able to get yout hands on some. Thanks!
Any acid reducer used in the same dosage should work. Another commenter said they used famotidine. I already had ranitidine on hand when I made this video, from probably a year or two before that.
It caused heart problems. My daughter was on it (Dr perscribed) but then they discontinued it due to these issues
If your rabbit is having any signs of GI status, please take them to a vet.
Pulled an all nighter with my baby because he hasn’t pooped or eat and I just got him 3 days ago. He had issues the very next morning, so I’ve been worried ever since. I went to CVS the moment they opened and I just made this. I’m praying it works. 🥺🥺

If your in Australia get low dose aspirin. My bun is a mini I used 1 whole tablet it’s 100mg . Only gave one for the day . I used baby infacol 1 ml ever hour with some water . And I used somac . 1/4 tablet with water and spread that over two doses . Literally within an hr of the somac he did so much poop . 😭🙏🏻

So, do you combine all three medications before administering them to the bunny, or do you administer each medication separately? I’m just asking to be sure.
I combine all three and administer together.
What semethicone do you use? I can get infacol but it's seems to have preservatives so not sure it's safe
I will have to check when I get home, I believe ours is just the CVS brand of simethicone…
My baby girl LuLu is a 7 yo Harlaquin. She had been lethargic, not being her active self eating less and once I realized she was incontinent both urine and feces she literally took a turn for the worse and now she's extremely bloated and miserable. Day one when trying to adjust her she did most terrifying short scream 4 times; literally lost it and have been bawling not knowing what to do and really just waiting for her to pass. Though were at 48 hrs now of what I'm pretty sure is GI stasis I have found this video and so far down 1 treatment. The only thing is I could only find the jell tabs for simethicone but making it work and radatidine is no longer on shelf but replaced with Cimetidine 200 mg (Tagamet) along with baby aspirin 81 mg. Her bloating has went down some; rubbing her tummy as instructed my question to those who this has worked for: about how long until at least an improvement of 50% to 75%>100% better did it take? Any suggestions or further remedies? I'm worried bcs a lot of my Lulu's symptoms don't match all the others but I also think she may have went further into before catching realizing or identifying the real problem. I'm so distraught and worry, already feel terrible for her suffering God willing she come out of this and we too get good results like many of you. I can only find famotidine that does up to 20 mg but you said to get a dosage similar to what you used in the video which was 35 mg is what you use right? Could I use the 10 milagram and use like 3 and a half to get to the same dosage????

For how long do you keep this treatment going? I started about 4 hrs ago and my bunny seems to be doing a lot better and even had some poops. However, she stills seems very lethargic and not fully herself.
I would give it to her once a day until she seems completely better. I hope she fully recovers!

Yes, I think that should work. As long as it’s an acid reducer in the dosage I recommended, it should work.
But what is the recommended dosage? I can read how many mg your bottle was. Please help! My rabbit is going through stasis now.
What dosage of the acid meds did you use? I have 20 mg famotidine and need to know how much to use!!!! Help!!!
We’re sorry for the delayed response. Ranitidine is unfortunately discontinued, but after some research I don’t see why famotidine wouldn’t work in the same way as a gut motility med. It does appear to be more potent than ranitidine, so I would reccomend only doing a dose of 5mg of the famotidine when mixing up our home remedy for your rabbit.

Im giving my bunny, meloxicam every morning for my bunny, would it alter the effects of the stuff im giving him? such as critical care

My rabbit seems to be uninterested in anything. He has been eating hay, pooping but not drinking a lot. Any advice on how I can make him comfortable?
Maybe try offering a little bit of sugar water to get them interested in drinking again? But then I would switch back to normal water as soon as they start drinking normally. Or maybe offer vegetables with high water content to keep them hydrated? I’ve never had to deal with this with my bunnies, so these are just ideas.

Yes, in the dosage reccomended is what has worked for us in the past. Or if you can’t find both simethicone and ranitidine, then do one of them paired with low-dose ibuprofen. It’s worth a shot if you’re in an emergency situation and can’t get to a vet! 😊
Can i mix the gas relief with some water in a bowl? I dont know if a syringe will suffice
You can certainly try. I’ve found I have to use a syringe because my rabbits won’t willingly drink when they are in stasis.
@@onemoreventurehomestead7803 Thanks for the reply! I'm past the situation now, but my rabbit would absolutely NOT drink it or take the syringe no matter what I did. I got it in one or two times but I had to trick her with treats. It was a nightmare... But we got through it luckily without reoccurring dosages.

Yes, that should be fine. As long as it’s an acid reducer in the same dosage I recommend in the video, it’s worth a shot.
I just spoke with the CVS pharmacist who said Ranitidine* was pulled from the market (which is probably why I can't find it) and that Famotidine is the closest med to it. Famotidine comes in 10 mg tablets at CVS.

@@onemoreventurehomestead7803 thank you so much I ended up using it at a half dose my rabbit had started eating on his own but now he’s back to not eating I’m really concerned what else can I give him
@@jayribujanda137 I would provide a 2nd dose of the home remedy described in the video every 4-6 hrs if your rabbit isn’t showing progress or eating.
What about max strength famotidine?
That type should work… Depending on how many mg’s the max strength is… If it is similar in dosage to what I recommended in the video then I would give it a shot.
What do you do if it’s potentially a hairball too?
I haven’t had to deal with hairballs in rabbits before; I just did a quick google search and it looks like you would need to syringe feed them lots of fluids to get the hairball to pass… but again, I haven’t done it before, so I’m not entirely sure. I hope your bunny recovered!
What size syringe are you using?
I was using a 20 ml syringe, but you could use a smaller sized one.

I’m so sorry to hear this. This remedy is not a guaranteed fix, and even bunnies treated for GI stasis at the vets don’t always make it. You did the best that you could! I’m so sorry to hear about your fur baby 😞
Same thing happened to my rabbit i did everything even vet clinic also give some medicine but still she don't want to eat and today at morning time we found she is no more 😭😭😭😭😭 I don't at which point i made mistake. 😭 Its very painful to lose our baby bunny 🐰

I would keep monitoring closely and only provide this remedy if you know for sure they aren’t eating and are in GI Stasis.

There’s no particular amount I use, just enough to mix the meds together and administer orally.

Mixing meds with crushed pellets and water, into a slurry, makes assist feeding with a syringe much easier for several reasons... not the least of which being your pet will recognize the smell. Go very slowly when syringe feeding or you run a great chance of aspirating your pet. Learn how much to give at a time (1ml or less for the little guys) and how much your pets stomach can even hold. Do more research than just this video on syringe feeding rabbits by watching videos on syringe feeding cats; it's a similar concept and lots of videos showing proper technique. Be very careful mixing meds with rabbits, lots of common foods have serious reactions when combined with meds and rabbits. Accurate info is relatively easy to find online, spend 30 minutes and learn from people with more experience rather than risking your pet's life. It's easy if you learn how to do it properly... this video glossed over some good things and left out some vital things. Do some research and save your pet.

Can rabbits take white Willow bark instead of aspirin which can cause intestinal bleeding in humans?
I just did a quick google search and it does seem like white willow bark is safe for rabbits… but I have not done intensive research on this.
Don't use either, it can cause intestinal distress and make things worse. If you feel like you need pain meds and don't have a local vet there are online vets (like through chewy) that can even prescribe meds.
