    If you hold a warm wet washcloth to the eye, it will help draw out any pus or crust, then wipe away with soft cloth or q-tip and rinse eye out with eye saline solution you buy at the drug store. Keep checking eye daily to make sure any swelling goes away. If any pus or infection is present Keep flushing eye repeating a couple times a day until it clears up
    IF IT DOESN'T CLEAR UP
    Terramycin. You can find it at any animal supply store. This is a over the counter medication and is effective against a variety of infections

    Thanks for this video. And for lots of your videos, to be honest. I've learned more from your site than any other source. I went out today and noticed one of my kits that is 20 days old had one eye gooed closed. I brought it in and did this treatment. It's eye is open now but is gooey. I've ordered some Terramycin in case we need it. When I discovered the problem this morning I thought to myself "I hope Bobby has something on this." You came through, as usual. Thanks again!

    I've been breeding rabbits for a couple years now and I have yet to see a case of nest eye. I have more experience with cats. Newborn kittens tend to get eye infections from exposure to vaginal bacteria during birth. I would imagine that's what's going on with nest eye. Newborn humans get medicine in their eyes whether they look like they need it or not just to prevent infection from vaginal bacteria.

      Wow. You learn something everyday.
      Infections are something you want to avoid for sure.
      I just breed New Zealand rabbits. No experience with cats.
      Nest eye is rare but it happens to most of us eventually. Increasing litter numbers will increase your chances of seeing it. When a kits eye remains shut it could get a bad infection or worse case scenario turn milky white and result in permanent blindness.
      Keep up the good work sounds like you're keeping your nesting boxes clean.

    I just finished doing the same thing to one of my does. She did wind up with some infection and I was using both the antibiotics and instead of saline I used the vetracin eyewash wash that I use on my goats and horses.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you buy your vetracin? Do you think it works better than Saline or is it less expensive?

    At what age would you recommend intervening? We have a litter of 6 that are 2 weeks old. 5 have eyes open, one still has both closed.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter

      12-14 days is a reasonable time. All rabbits eyes should be open by then.

    Does this happen after their eyes open on their own? My kits are 2 weeks old today. They open their eyes, but I am worried they will get it...first time breeder here. Also, how old are the kits you have in the video? Thank you!

    • @TheRabbitryCenter

    Do you think the nest eye might be a result of the kindling totes plus DE? Curious b/c I'm thinking about making totes as well. Thanks!

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nest eye is caused by bacteria in the litter box. This can happen a number of ways. The straw that made up the nest got dirty or a kit could've been peed on or it could be winter time and the litter is burrowing deeper than in the summer time where they'd want to stay cool above the chips and straw. I couldn't tell you for sure what the exact cause was but I can tell you that we don't see a lot of nest eye but with 3 litters going constantly it does happen from time to time. The good news is its easy to fix. Your rabbit is most importantly alive and back to normal in a few days. We wanted to do this video for some time but had to wait patiently for a kit to get it.
