I have a 2003 Black Ford Excursion 6.0 L with 311,xxx miles. It has a 44 gallon tank, and gets 17.5 mpg in mixed driving. We had all six engine design flaws corrected at 297,xxx miles (cost $12K, including new front leather seats). Next, we will get it re-painted and put a new stereo in it. Well worth the maintenance costs. If you could buy a new one, it would cost $70k+. I am 6'7" tall, and about 335lb. We travel all over the country in this thing. The truck is fantastic.

Have had my '01 V10 for 15 years now, have thought about selling it many times but just can't do it, only put a few thousand a year on it, but man when you need it to go get something big there is no better rig, and that's all the excuse I need.
DO NOT SELL IT!!! Blew the engine(stuck thermostat and the wife kept driving it) in mine and bought an Expedition for her to drive. I have to lean over and raise my arm for her to access the console! Finally replaced the engine in the Excursion with a Ford factory rebuild installed at the dealer. It is so nice to have my "living room" back on the road! I dread riding in the Expedition. We are about to give it to my daughter an buy a more practical vehicle for my wife to sell Real Estate in, a Porche Cayenne! She needs a smaller car and she earned it. I'll keep the Excursion! I am just thankful I did not learn the hard way and get rid of the Excursion to know what a mistake it would be to sell it!
I've had my '02 V10 4x4 for 16 years. It had 69k, now has 308k miles. It needs an exhaust manifold, pipe, two rocker panels, hydraulics for rear window, two new front seats, a couple window switches, new hubs and new tires. Hauled five kids and a horse trailer for many years. I still drive it a short distance to work. I really love this truck. It's a Limited, red and gold, all original, beautiful paint, because I've kept it clean and waxed. Your video has convinced me to just put the money into refurbishing it instead of buying a new truck. Thank you.
My 2000 7.3 turbo 2wd is the best truck I have ever owned. I pay less insurance/registration then a pick up. It gets 15/20 mpg and I am researching to improve it. I have put a full sized recliner couch inside to get it home. 260,000 and still running strong. We are looking to purchase a second one.
Yeah . I had an 03 6.0. Motor had blow back sold it with 200k miles bought a 2013 el expedition. It sucks nothing like my excursion. Had it 2 yrs buying another excursion . Loved that truck I'm gonna keep it no matter what.
I'm in NC with a 2003 Limited 6.0 (yes the dreaded 6blow!) She's treated me good up to 220k but did develop a hot no start situation last year towing the boat. I took a few months over the winter and re-sealed the engine, studs, tuner, etc, and it's great now.....or at least I'm holding my breath. Great video and you gained a sub just from your humor my Excursion Brother!
I have found the 6.0 problems generally stem from people using tuners. I've seen bone stock 6.0 engines in F350s go well over 600k. As long as their maintained well and left alone, they're good. But once you start having issues like you are with the no-start, it's probably a good idea to upgrade. Thank you for the sub! Be sure to check out our other videos!
The 2wd lift struts are the taller ones, as the 2wd model was lower to the ground. Also, most of the 6.0s problems were mostly due to fuel, and lack of a coolant filter.
2003 6.0 Diesel, 116,000 miles. it's had its issues, but I love it. Only drive it now when I need too, mainly road trips, Costco and Home Depot runs. I've replaced the rear struts with longer ones, don't hit my head anymore.
I would love to have an excursion. Preferably a 4WD but not really nessecery. But definatly the V-10 or the 7.3 Diesel. My favorite vehicles of all time, the Excursion and the Suburban XL.
I got a 2003 V10 and that was my first new car ! I still have it and have 250K plus miles. I live in Chicago land and I got some of the rust and my hitch rusted off last month.I never getting rid of it LOL. Great video.
@@shift-heads1686 of course it's a pro, you can put wider stuff in the cargo bay. Also, the door code I beleive is on the passenger kick panel. If not just google how to reset the door code. You dont need the original code. Did mine a year ago.
@@fritzduval its on a control module up under the dash. That's how I found mine. A Google search for a few forums has the info how to find them, its easy.
I had an ‘05 6.0 Eddie Bauer 2WD with tuner, turbo back exhaust and after market intake. Drove it 130k miles and traded it 2010 for a new F-250. I had the split rear doors. Only had two issues. EGR gasket failed in warranty and some fuel injection sensor went bad, also in warranty. It got 20 mpg. It was really fast. Used to cruise at 100 on I-10 coming out of New Orleans heading to Houston. Wish I could get a new one with the 6.7. The aftermarket conversions for modern Super Duties are too pricey and I know from experience that conversions are usually full of issues.
Great choice man. Ford Excursion is the best SUV ever made. Pros of owning Excursion: you have high durable, very safe, reliable and solid bold looking SUV, which has largest cargo space, roomiest interior and the best towing capability. Cons of owning Excursion: every vehicle has pros and cons, but pros of owning Excursion are much more than cons. Main problem is that, all Excursions are used ones, with more 15-year-old age, and can’t buy new one. But, this old Excursions are still much better in many ways, than newer or even all new SUVs. Ford must produce Excursions again. Expedition MAX is nice, but Excursion is much stronger, much durable and much bolder SUV. In comparison of 2021 large GM SUVs, Expedition MAX and Navigator L are smaller and weaker. But, new Excursion will be the biggest and the strongest. So, Ford must show everyone who is the King is full-size SUV segment.
I dont think Ford will ever manufacture another vehicle to match the Excursion. They have pickups that will do anything an Excursion will do, except haul 8 people and all their toys.
The keyless door code is up behind the fuse box on the security system box. I haven’t had to change any of the door latches yet. My 7.3L Excursion is awesome. I still have the stock headlights and I can see great at night. I had an F-350 that I put a 60gal tank in that was another 7.3L. Don’t complain about 44gal of gas. It’s also not that bad on mileage either. I get high teens to low 20’s, yes I may have done some engine upgrades to get that but it still counts to me. Not sure what you have against the 4r100 transmission? Mine stops on a dime, and I always have brakes all the time. I will never get rid of my Excursion.
I have had a 2003 7.3 Limited I bought in 2007. I love this truck. Currently removed the center and back row seats converted for camping. Its as big as a van but not as tall. I can get bike inside and all my equipment plus a bed. I also have a roof top tent. It only has 263000 miles on it. I think about selling it but what can I buy that will give me all this. NOTHING!!!! My kids named it the Beast. Sounds like the Beast has a lot of relatives.
My brother! Just found your video and completely agree!!! And know from experience that Ford makes the best vehicles in every category in the world!!! Hope to see more soon!!!
I have owned two of the excursions so far. First one was the 02, the second one still is the 05 model all in diesel since I pull a 20ft cargo trailer to the tracks. I prefer my 05 model 6.0l over the 02 7.3l model. Yes, either one needs some loving, the engines and drivetrain will really piss you off. Ford was so lacking. What were they thinking? A D50 with leaf springs for an suv for the front suspension? That weighs in at around 8000lbs empty? The front pinion of the D50 will snap off easily. Leaf springs on an SUV? Give me the F350 coils with the D60 front end..... Kind of cool though to have the mattress laid out in the back watching DVD's with the kids. Did I say that I like the Excursion???? That was my Good, Bad and the Ugly
To find the door code look under the driver side of the dashboard. There's a black box with the code on it... And I own two of them, the newest one I got for 900 dollars. With a bad oil pump and 165k for miles. But it a a limited and very clean.... So worth it👍👍👍
Landon the Excursion has to this day the most cup holders of any vehicle made , when they were designing it they gotta few good ol boys together and found out you need them no questions asked, i use to sell suburbans which are huge and your is just the ultimate behemoth , did yours come with the basement, lol , great video
I have a 6.8L v10 and it can pull like a beast, BUT my dad on the other hand has a 6.0L v8 desiel, and it is NIGHT and DAY difference man is unbelivable.
I've owned 4, best one I have is my 2000 6.8l. After doing the calvan inserts I have over 330k on original motor, on my second transmission. But I'm lifted 12" and running 47" tires, and I daily it.
My 01 Limited has been sitting for 3 years. Needs a trans. I drive an '18 6.7 F350, currently. Hoping to restore the Ex and replace the V10, with another diesel!
2005 with 254k miles, and I got it 10 years ago with 90k. Its been in the shop 3x for a total of $2600. I pull trailers, carry loads and do long trips. This 4WD V10 is a dream truck...minus the 8mpg. I won't be selling her. I will turn it into a jungle gym for my grandkids when it dies, (or my great grands at this rate).
My daily is a prius and the 2000 6.8L V10 is my camping rig on the weekends. Yes, the prius is painfully slow and boring but it sure makes the 9mpg in the Excursion a little more bearable. :) Great video!
I love my 03 Limited 6.0 . It's only two "major" issues is I'm working on my second clogged oil cooler and ICP sensor doesn't last but 2 years. About to back flush and replace ICP.
You can get the door code from the dealer with the VIN or like me I had my youngest child memorize it and they never forgot it! Now that my FOB is broke I just call him at college to get me in.
I love my 02 6.8 limited, paid $4000 cash and so far all its needed was oil changes and a alternator and threw a new battery in to be safe. Its at 204,893 miles as of today and still like new inside and out besides rocker rust. Great truck and the gas mileage does suck but i do use my cruise control alot which seems to really help. Also removed the rear seat to take some weight out because i dont use it. Ik it doesnt make much of a difference taking out the third row in a truck this heavy but figured it couldnt hurt. I travel 32 miles to and from work on roads that are 55 mph speed limits but im in a more country area in michigan that butts up near the suburbs so theirs not a insane amount of traffic or anything here. I set the cruise at about 57 mph and get on average between 14-15 mpg on the ol' lie-o-meter, highest it ever showed was 17.8 with cruise set to 60 on a brisk 36 degree morning but when Im stuck in city driving with lots of stop and go it instantly goes down to 7-9mpg. Highway driving usually averages me out at 15-16 mpg at 70 anything higher mpg suffers but again idk for sure because those average mpg trip meters like to lie. I also have no exterior mods like the brush guard, lift or anything besides rain guards on the windows and slightly bigger then stock tires.
The code for the door is in the dash. If you remove the cup holder or the bag hook thing, not sure which, you can find the code printed on a module. I had a 2004 and thats where i found mine.
Pull your airbag if it has already been replaced the code is on the back of the airbag or you can look at the ECM under the dash from the code is on the ECM
I have a 2005, 6.0 powerstroke, LOVE THIS MONSTER!, I got 425K out of the engine before it blew up "Caused by a shit mechanic that broke a injector off in the engine" But $30,000 later my baby is back! with a bullet proof engine and transmission! Note International Harvester is building crate engines 6.0 with a great warranty for ford., ALL issues fixed.
@@danielcashion7358 in a nutshell, the 7.3 is more reliable, but the 6.0 performs way better. But with some money you can make the 6.0 just as reliable, which makes it a better engine all around.
The door code is under the dash board in the center above the transmission hump. On the firewall, inside.. Way up there. But you can see it without removing anything. White back ground, black numbers. Nice Excursion you have there.
Just traded my '01 V10 that I've owned and used as a daily for the last 6 years for a new Ranger. I did miss it after my last trip to the hardware store for 4'x8' plywood. Unfortunately, all of the rockers, wheel arches, and few other spots were rusting through and fuel economy ~8mph is terrible for a daily. Towed a 34' travel trailer, no problem, but now we have a diesel motorhome and Ranger can be flat towed. Loved my Ex. though.
You have to spin the head rest around when storing it inside the holder when folding the seats. I noticed you didn't turn it around, thats why it would go all the way down.
I always liked them, especially the 7.3L version. I own a Suburban Z71 AND LOVE IT. Fords to me tend to be harder to work on than GM v8 engines. Would love a 2500 Suburban with a Cummins 5.9/6.7, but a duraburb will do too.
First of all, it is a truck, not an SUV on an automobile chassis. 7.3L is amazing. Finding a garage for this truck is not easy, mine has lived in a garage since new, now in an air conditioned garage. 7 foot garage doors are just a little short. No rust on my Las Vegas Excursion, I still get “nice truck” from observers. First set of brakes lasted 80,000 miles. With a few updates from BANKS I get amazing fuel mileage. Enjoy your truck.
My uncle has one with 2 15 inch kickers on the back lol, he has 3 amplifiers, 1 for the woofers and 2 for the speakers, one for the left side and the other one for the right side
Found a 00 7.3 with 320k miles on it in my area for 6500 that I'm thinking about checking out. I'm fully expecting a rust bucket for that price. We shall see.
code is behind the radio on something.... have to be a gymnist to read it, but we did it. upside down. i recall being positioned in the passenger side stretched across the center looking up from the bottom for the damn behind the radio
I had a Greenbriar Corvair and got an extra engine for $10 in Flint, Michigan. Traded for a Studebaker Silver Hawk. The Greenbriar became a dune buggy, a big one! Bo Dogly
Awesome score! The Greenbrier in the video belongs to my Uncle who has a huge collection of Corvairs and is a long standing member of the Corvair Club of America! The ones his club can't save get torn down and cut up to save other cars. Particularly ones in the states that have rust problems.
I've heard of several different spots that code could be. But I have the remote FOB that works, so I never use the door pad. Not very worried about retrieving the code.
@@shift-heads1686 you say that but it is very convenient once you know it. No need to grab the keys just to grab your phone charger or something you had forgotten.
I got an 02 7.3 diesel excursion. When you commented "10 cup holders" I thought, "yeh 10 cup holders and the 7.3 didnt come with exhaust manifold gaskets! But maybe we can thank international for that!
Get the metra ford premium radio harness kit. It will apply power to your rear dvd system so it still works and you can get the audio from it tied into your aftermarket media receiver.
The code for the door lock is on the module in the dash under the spot where the 4x4 controls would be. Pull the lower cover under the ac controls and you'll find it om there off to the left a little bit.
I posted this video about 9 months ago. It has over 49k views, and over 250 comments on it. This comment by far has been the most useful out of all of them. Thank you!

Zero Cons! haha my 2003 just rolled 300,000 miles, original V10 engine, same transmission (factory replacement) since 80K. Broke 2 valve springs at 195,000 mi, so did complete valve-job then. All 10 new Coil-on-Plugs & plugs at 240K solved my Error codes on 2 pistons. Other than that, fuel pump at 250K, 1 set ball joints, few brake jobs & bulbs, and recent rusted rockers, nothing has gone wrong with my Excursion! Will never sell this truck!
I did see that! Unfortunately mine lost all compression on cyl #3. Turns out, it sucked the intake valve. I go into more detail in other videos here on the channel!

If you live in California, you will fail the emissions testing without the Catalytic Converter. It really stinks someone stole yours, because from what I hear they are getting harder to find. Good luck on getting it straightened out, and thank you for the comment!
Mine is limited and V10. 4x4. Bought with 116k miles on it for 8k. 6 or 8 inch lift. Only problem was they put way to big of tires on it. 37. 12.50 17s. They rub very hard when turning.
Pros: the towing capacity of the eight seater tractor, they can dig off road, If you own a farmland or orchard, and have bigger family or a big crew, you could use that to haul people in, it's perfect for oil drilling in Texas, Cons: parking that thing at crowded Walmart store parking lot is too hard, bad fuel economy, high maintenance cost with 4x4 most elderly people can't get in or out of that thing.

Well done vid👍. I own a 2001 V10 Limited in red. Love it! Its got 254k miles and it still runs like a "Georgia Peach".
the master code for the door pad is on the module, usually up under the dash. you'll need to take a picture with your phone or use a mirror
I HAVE A 2000 EXCURSION I CAN NOT FIND IT??
Or pasted on the BCM module, behind the front passenger foot kick trim under the glove box.
That's where mine was. I have a 2000
That is what I did
I've had my '02 V10 4x4 for 16 years. Thank you.
It would be less expensive to repair whats needed than to purchase a new truck. Theyre are kits to reupholster the seats.
@@shift-heads1686 I've already found new front replacement seats for about $460 each.
Hubby and I just got a mint condition 2003 7.3 for a little bit of nothing last week and we LOVE it. We are looking for another.
Good score! Glad you love it!
The Excursion makes all the Expedition owners feel "insufficient".... 😁
I have both. I always think its funny how I consider my gen 1 expedition my "fuel saver" hahaha
Get a f250
Yeah . I had an 03 6.0. Motor had blow back sold it with 200k miles bought a 2013 el expedition. It sucks nothing like my excursion. Had it 2 yrs buying another excursion . Loved that truck I'm gonna keep it no matter what.
😂😂😂
My 6.0 Excursion rocks! It’s my dream car that moves my whole family. 👍🇺🇸
Dont forget the lock tab on the rear swing doors to open them all the way. 5 years of owning one and I just learned about it yesterday...
Not really a pro or a con there. Just a neat little trick it can do.
There is no con owning this king ..
I have 3 of them 2000 limited v10
2005 xlt my off road go to truck
2005 xlt v10 supercharged
Love them all .
Ford Excursion, coolest and best SUV ever!
I love mine.🙂
I have had a 2003 7.3 Limited I bought in 2007. I love this truck. Currently removed the center and back row seats converted for camping. Its as big as a van but not as tall. I can get bike inside and all my equipment plus a bed. I also have a roof top tent. It only has 263000 miles on it. I think about selling it but what can I buy that will give me all this. NOTHING!!!! My kids named it the Beast. Sounds like the Beast has a lot of relatives.
There is nothing else like it on the road! Thanks for commenting!
Basement? Isnt that what the center console is? It sure is deep enough.
I have a 6.8L v10 and it can pull like a beast, BUT my dad on the other hand has a 6.0L v8 desiel, and it is NIGHT and DAY difference man is unbelivable.
I average 17 mpg on a short commute, longs trips in the summer I can get 18-21 depending on the drive. It’s a 7.3.
I’ve been looking into truck/jeeps cause I’m 19 and 6’7 and I’ve finally made my decision on getting one of these for sure
You will have no problem fitting your 6'7" frame into an Excursion. I'm 6'1" and still dont have the seat all the way back.
Subscriber 170 checking in because of this video. Nice amount of comedy with information. Loved it

Excursion Club for life!!!
I've owned 4, best one I have is my 2000 6.8l. After doing the calvan inserts I have over 330k on original motor, on my second transmission. But I'm lifted 12" and running 47" tires, and I daily it.
Pros: Excursions run forever, like a dump truck.
Cons: Excursions are the size of a dump truck.
Your not lying!
I drove a dump truck for work a few years ago. It was the only thing that made my Excursion look small... lol
Mine has 360,000 on it and I dont even drive it a lot XD
@@delph7262 who drove it a Lot?
I'm on the search for an excursion. Your vid was both enlightening and entertaining. thanks. You have a knack for this for sure.
Thank you so much! That was the best compliment I've received on this channel so far!
Code is usually behind the passanger rear door trim where the seat belt comes out. Or under the passager dash behind the right kick panel
I love my 2000 limited. I can't go back to a regular car. I got a job where my company pays for the gas.
u can find the keyless entry code if u remove the glove box, theres a module that will have the code. u gotta use a flashlight and look deep in it
My daily is a prius and the 2000 6.8L V10 is my camping rig on the weekends. Yes, the prius is painfully slow and boring but it sure makes the 9mpg in the Excursion a little more bearable. :) Great video!
Prius gets hate but it’s a perfect road trip/ daily. These are perfect weekend rigs for sure 🤟🏼
I have a 2000 V10 love it and need to get it overdone rust and motor but will keep it forever
we LOVE our 4 x 4 Excursion Limited (2003) - there are NO cons in our opinion!!! Nothing better!
If you look up under the dash between near the gas pedal the body computer with the code is up in there. With a mirror you can see it.
just brought 05 loving it
this helped me a lot, hopefully monday will be getting my first excursion 6.8 v10, cant wait
Join the Ford Excursion Owners Club on facebook. We have alot of knowledge with these things and we would love to see what you got!
Same here! Hopefully Monday also 😁
Will do I just got mine today 2000 v 10 10 inch lift rolling. On 38 in tires
Awesome video, loved your jokes. We love ours too. Really wish Ford would bring it back.
This can classify as a full house tour. What a awesome tru- I mean building!
I have a 6.8 v10 4x4 at 169000 miles, besides 10 mpg and normal ware and tear, pretty good truck
Pull your airbag if it has already been replaced the code is on the back of the airbag or you can look at the ECM under the dash from the code is on the ECM
loved this video bro
5 stars
2000 xlt
finessed a 4th row
philadelphia, pa
Thank you!
That's awesome, How difficult was is to install a 4th row?
I have a 2005, 6.0 powerstroke, LOVE THIS MONSTER!, I got 425K out of the engine before it blew up "Caused by a shit mechanic that broke a injector off in the engine" But $30,000 later my baby is back! with a bullet proof engine and transmission! Note International Harvester is building crate engines 6.0 with a great warranty for ford., ALL issues fixed.
I didnt know Internarional was doing that! Might be worth looking into!
Is the 6.0 or 7.3 better? I heard the only way to get one is diesel.
@@danielcashion7358 in a nutshell, the 7.3 is more reliable, but the 6.0 performs way better. But with some money you can make the 6.0 just as reliable, which makes it a better engine all around.
44 gallons is 144 litres!!!
In the UK fuel is £1.20 per litre ($1.67) or $6.31 gallon so it would cost $277.64 to fill it here!
166 litres by my calcs, in Australia at 2.40 per litre.... $398.40
The door code is under the dash board in the center above the transmission hump. On the firewall, inside.. Way up there. But you can see it without removing anything. White back ground, black numbers. Nice Excursion you have there.
Thank you so much for your invaluable information, highly appreciate it, keep it up the outstanding job, have a great day.
I have an 05 excursion 4x4 with the 6.0 turbo diesel and have had no problems aside from regular maintenance. Has about 230,000 miles on it too.
I have the same. 185k on the clock. Most of my problems are stupid little annoyances.
Mines at 287,000 still kicking
Love your review of such a great piece of engineering
Thanks a lot made up my mind for the Excursion
7.3’s feel like a tank!
315k on the 7.3 , just getting broken in
Found a 00 7.3 with 320k miles on it in my area for 6500 that I'm thinking about checking out. I'm fully expecting a rust bucket for that price. We shall see.
Look under the dash on the driver side deep in on the fire wall you will see a module with numbers on it. That’s the factory code
Landon has looked there. He didnt find it.
Shift-Heads remove the ashtray in the dash and look in with a flashlight. I forgot under the dash on the drivers side is for a f150
code is behind the radio on something.... have to be a gymnist to read it, but we did it. upside down. i recall being positioned in the passenger side stretched across the center looking up from the bottom for the damn behind the radio
I do know this. Mine climes hills that are almost straight up.. V10 4x4.
Nice video .... Just get mine ..... 2006 (Last year made) v10 greetings from Cancún
Awesome video. Thanks
Love the vid! Thanks for sharing the info on pros and cons!!
The best video on the subject matter!
Fords keyless entry code are usually behind the right rear passenger side plastic cover where the seatbelt is. Well at least for my Ford explorer 👍

Zero Cons! haha my 2003 just rolled 300,000 miles, original V10 engine, same transmission (factory replacement) since 80K.
Love the way he Says things!😂😂😂😂 cool way to do a review 👍👍👍👍👍
There's one for sale by me that has v10 and I'm looking to get it and it will be my first vehicle
wouldn't trade my 2000 7.3 limited for anything
Tfltruck had a cylinder go out also. These use up coil pack wires badly. Look up the video.
I did see that! Unfortunately mine lost all compression on cyl #3. Turns out, it sucked the intake valve. I go into more detail in other videos here on the channel!
Hearing the 5.4 being shit with the 3 valve I 100% agree with but the 2 valve?
I have an expedition eddiebauer. specifically 1998 year. its got 360,553 miles on it and with minor issues

Man love the vid. Got to respect the king of SUV Ford Excursion🤣🤣

Pros: the towing capacity of the eight seater tractor, they can dig off road, If you own a farmland or orchard, and have bigger family or a big crew, you could use that to haul people in, it's perfect for oil drilling in Texas,
Cons: parking that thing at crowded Walmart store parking lot is too hard, bad fuel economy, high maintenance cost with 4x4 most elderly people can't get in or out of that thing.
