The Ford Excursion is the BIGGEST production SUV EVER MADE! Today, I borrowed this highly coveted and highly sought-after SUV to show you why prices have gone through the roof! After that, I will show you some of my favorite features, take it for a drive, and point out some of the things you should LOOK for if you’re planning on buying one.
The Ford Excursion, produced from 2000 to 2005, was a heavy-duty, full-sized SUV and the longest and heaviest SUV of its time. It was designed as a competitor to the Chevrolet Suburban and was derived from the F-250 Super Duty pickup truck.
The Excursion was primarily sold in North America, with limited export production. It was assembled at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant and ceased production in September 2005. Although the Excursion remains the largest SUV ever produced, its record for length was matched in 2023 by the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, and it is surpassed in weight by the GMC Hummer EV.
So, how did this massive SUV come to be, you ask? Well… In 1973, General Motors redesigned the Suburban utility wagon, adding a fourth passenger door to compete directly against the International Harvester Travelall. When the Travelall was discontinued in 1975, the Suburban became the only wagon-style full-size SUV. In 1978, Ford released the second-generation Bronco, based on the F-100 pickup truck, to compete with the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ford offered four-door versions of the Bronco on a special-order basis. In 1997, Ford replaced the Bronco with the five-door Expedition in response to declining demand for three-door SUVs. In 1999, Ford developed the heavy-duty Excursion SUV based on the F-250/F-350 Super Duty pickup truck to compete with the Suburban 2500.
Throughout its production, the Ford Excursion offered a range of engine options, including gasoline and diesel variants. The standard gasoline engine was a 5.4L Triton V8, with a 6.8L Triton V10 available as an optional upgrade. Initially, the optional diesel engine was the 7.3L Powerstroke V8 produced by Navistar. However, in 2003, a new 6.0L diesel V8, also produced by Navistar and carrying the Powerstroke name, was introduced. All engines were paired with automatic transmissions, with the 4-speed 4R100 automatic used for the 5.4L, 6.8L, and 7.3L engines, while the 6.0L engine was equipped with a 5-speed 5R110W automatic transmission.
So what makes the excursion so desirable? Well, I personally think it comes down to 3 main things. First is capability. These remarkable trucks, when equipped with the V10 or diesel engines, can tow up to 11,000 lbs pounds. That’s right! You’ll be hard pressed to find another SUV with the same towing capacity. Second is utility. Ford basically took an F350 and put a roof over the bed. This allows for large families to carry all their stuff AND not have to stay at a hotel. They can just sleep in here! Third is exclusivity, especially the ones with the diesel engines! Just under 180,000 of these were made worldwide and the diesel 7.3L engines have been known to run forever!
[What to look for when buying one]
[list issues]
-Fuel Injector Failures: Diesel-powered Excursions.
-Glow plug module on the diesel engine equipped Excursions.
-6.0L diesel - EGR cooling pipes that leak coolant into the exhaust.
-Turbocharger Failures
-On 7.3L diesel engines, the camshaft position sensor was recalled on early models.
-Gas powered 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10 are prone to have the spark plug threads damaged causing the spark plugs to go flying out the engine.

-Suspension Components:
-Steering and Brake System Problems:
-Rusted Body Panels:

Bought mine for 3 reasons. It’s a bank vault on wheels. It can tow almost anything you want. And our sons are 6’4” and 6’5” tall and have plenty of second row leg room.
I've always said, " If you can't do your own work on a 20+ year old 7.3, its a money pit " Pushing 540,000 miles on my 2001 today! :)
For sure!! And that’s incredible! 540k miles! How many of those miles is towing?
Paying others to work on a Suburban is far cheaper than that Escursion would be.
I just bought a 2001 with 225,00 mi
So far engine seems really sound. Gonna have to sink some money into the front suspension system but That's easy considering
650,000 on mine gone through 2 trannys and other small parts
I got me one of those excursions. I aint never getting rid of it.
diesel or gas??
All these claimed issues seem to be mostly normal maintenance issues. My 02 V10 4x4 has 360k miles and only recurring issue was 4 alternators. Best vehicle I've ever owned!
Just bought a 2000 v10 yesterday. 120k zero rust. Perfect paint. No dents. Couldn't say no.
If you have a V10, get the SPD Ypipe. Ditch the converter, no CEL since no after cat O2. Get a 5 star tune. Improved acceleration and shift points. Rear sway bar is a must!
Good to know! What's the deal with the rear sway bar?
The back end rocks pretty severely on uneven surfaces. The rear sway bar tightens that up and lessens the feeling of tip over.
The hook is used for a plastic bag to throw your garbage into but since it’s an excursion you could probably fit a trashcan😂
Wow, that ride is MINT-MINT..
"I'm inside of a Tonka truck. I'm living my childhood dreams"... Cool.
Ford did also sell entertainment packages that were ceiling mounted foldable tv screens, I have so many childhood memories of watching stuff on those screens.
I've only had mine for 3 years and I love her ❤❤❤❤
One of my favorite trucks ever made. The 7.3 would be my choice for gas miles. The 10 just because of the power output
Great video. 😎👍
Thanks 👍
I'm glad I ran across your video I've been looking for as many positive reviews I can find because I'm trying to get financing for a 2001 Ford excursion limited
I love huge SUVs back when they were actually capable vehicles. I opted for an 05 Suburban Z71 4x4 and love it. Owned it for a year and it almost has 370k miles. Will completely rebuild it. Those 7.3 Escursion prices are insane. If i had extra money, i would source a 2500 Suburban 4x4 and duramax swap it for far less than what buying a 7.3 Escursion would cost.
I love this truck never had one but I want a V10 😂
It reminds me so much of our 2000 expedition but with the extra space.
Clip board is impossible to write on but the clip is great to secure a bath mat to protect the center council from dog , kids or passenger damage to surface. Also gives puppy a non slip surface to stand on.
Love Excursions these are definitely neat vehicles especially when the third seat out and 2nd row seat folded down to make it an enclosed pickup truck regular cab 8 foot bed awesome
Yes they are! They’re based off the F250 so you’re not far off when you say “it’s an enclosed pickup”
So was the Aerostar extended van. Hauled many sheets of drywall with the rear door shut.
yes it was. Had 4 growing boys.
This is my DREAM car!
2024!! Let’s make it happen!!!
Trust me I want too! Been Praying and Working! @@Miguelsgarage
The hook could be used as a trash bag holder.
SAME!!!
the dashboard hook is for a garbage bag, a purse, or a bag of goodies from Sheetz or WaWa. Some commercial vans also have these.
We have a 2000 excursion, and we've put an extra 22 gallon fuel tank so it can run on vegetable oil and so we could drive it cross country twice.
I love mine 2002 6.8 V10 Ford excursion! It's a road tank plus the satisfaction of enjoying the road tank!
It sure is! Have you had any issues with it?
Same here. Love my V10 Ex
Pretty good video. I’m planning on getting one of these when I’m older. My name’s Miguel too!!
You should! And awesome name btw! ;)
Aww thank you 👍
I’m looking at one right now. Just found out that we are expecting twins to add to our four boys. The Expedition just isn’t the best option for 4 car seats at once.
I mean, you could get a KIA Carnival (Seats 11), but then you'd lose all respect and self-esteem... Your choice! :)
@@Miguelsgarage can it tow my 6000lb camper? Wife wants to upgrade to the 7,000lbs with the slide out because it’s an absolute circus in our current one with 4 boys, let alone two more! I would really prefer to not have to take two vehicles any time we go camping or go visit family on the east cost. 😂 Seriously, I’m pigeon holed into an Excursion. Found a fairly nice looking, one owner from Texas, 2005 not too far away. Just waiting on the sale of our first business so we can trade in our truck and pay the difference cash.
Still looking for an excursion
@robertspencer4086 still looking for an excursion
@@JoseGuzman-mr5ty I have found one that we like. Just waiting for our business sale to go through for the cash to buy it.
Damn m jealous 😏
I found one but it's kinda expensive
I'll do my best 👌
The console clip also holds your Chick fil A nugget box so it doesn’t slide off. 5:35
I call BS on that! Pic or it never happened!!

Took me 20 years to figure out that you can disconnect the hinge stop to fully swing both rear doors out of the way so the doors are not in the way while loading 4x8 sheets of plywood into the back of the interior cargo space when seats are folded down.
Car beautifull
Sorry the Excursion is the Largest Passenger Vehicle! Look at your Title! It is exempt from mud-flaps and restrictions on SUV’s and Trucks registered in the USA. Got one and love it!
6:00 that looks like a good space to put one of those hanging air fresheners
:D or scented candles!!
One would be badass stretched with a dually bed behind.
The plastic hook on the dash you pointed out is for a trash bag that used to be sold all over.
Have an 05 v10 with 430 gears with hellwig rear stabilizer bar 43000 miles pulls like a dream
Did I read that right? 43K miles? Or did you mean 430K?
@@Miguelsgarage Yes 43k picked in December of 2019 with 24501 miles road trip vehicle. I had the code V and C springs done ordered from Junior at ATS in Pennsylvania. Bilstein shocks, hellwig sway bar, red head gear box, and the spd y pipe done. She tows very good.
Is the 5.4 worth it???💯😈👌🏽
(paraphrasing) It’s like a Carhartt jacket you can drive 😂
Everyone wants to know if ford will start making these again, but I can guarantee if they do, they will NEVER be as durable and long lasting as these.
Everything today is way to high tech filled with electronics and cheap interior materials
If you want an Excursion with the Legendary 7.3 then any "problems" become a moot point. Oh and my 2000 has an ashtray...no hook!
find one with a XLT trim and it either have a Powerstroke diesel or a regular V8, avoid the V10
I wish people would stop saying the Excresion is so big. It's a regular cab 3/4 ton Ford Super Duty with a permanent canopy. Get over it!
Soccer Moms dropping off kids with a Super Duty escape criticism. But an Ex shows up and everyone speed dialed Greta,
I have a 2000 that I bought new in 2001 languishing on a small town lot. It becomes a lawn ornament when fuel prices spike but goes on the road as needed. I look up at new F150s. It's not big at all by todays standards.
Looks like a new paint job. Is that a custom color? If so can you tell me what color it is. Looks awesome!
I asked the owner and he doesn't know. The guy at the body shop mixed a custom color.
Thanks for checking@@Miguelsgarage
The color is Estate Green and was a factory color.
Shockingly the gas 2500 suburban with 8.1 and 4.10 gears has higher towing capacity than the 7.3L Ford.
The hook is for the purse or for grocery bags 😊
Thanks! Good to know!
@@Miguelsgarage On the versions that were equipped with the smokers package that is actually the ash tray, I own one with it (that fortunately was never smoked in!)
Also those rear barn doors have a tab hidden inside that slides out and clips to the door frames to hold them open (look at the inside of the door between the hinge).
The rear 3rd row seat is actually on wheels and is pretty easy to remove from the vehicle.
I'm going to be looking at replacing the center front console with a jump seat as I personally have found it to be a big waste of space, the only real benefit is the rear facing power port for the second row (which I will try and keep). The Third row does have a power port on the drivers side, meaning that every row has at least one place to charge a phone.
😀👍2020 F250 Excursion
Trash bag holder hook
Looking for a big suv like this what you guys recommend.
Suburban or V10 excursion?
Both are pretty capable! It really depends on what you want to do with it and personal taste. The Excursion will be a little bit more capable and it is more desirable.
@@Miguelsgarage thank you
Can’t tell if bro is short or the truck is just huge or both. 😂
any common issues with 6.8 v10?
Yes...bad gas mileage!
Rear door are light because they’re fiberglass
Good to know! They sure feel like it.
The hook on the lower dash is for trash bags.
No way! Good to know!
How tall are you? This truck's massive!
LOL 😂 with my shoes on, I’m about 5’10” so not tall. The truck has a suspension lift. I think 4 inches. That makes it even bigger than normal
Oh damn i thought you were like 5'4'' lol. Can't really tell on video. I needed a reference coz i don't really see these trucks over here in europe. I did see a stock excursion and a f-350 dually irl, they were like 6'7'' stock. @@Miguelsgarage
If I were 5’4”, I’d be Kevin Hart famous!!! 😂😂
Do you remember the setup on this truck? Are those 35's on a 4'' lift?@@Miguelsgarage
They were built on the F250 chassis, not the F350.
That's what I said 0:45
Basically the same truck minus some suspension changes
The hook is for a grocery bag/trash bag
I still have my 2003 with 252K MILES
Awesome!! What’s the goal? Keeping it long term?
I like it. But I don't need a truck that big.
That hook is for keys
The rear doors are made of fiberglass thats why they are light
No way!! Makes sense! Why would they make that out of fiberglass??? Everything else is so heavy, what’s the point?
@@Miguelsgaragefiberglass rear doors doesn't sound accurate. Maybe aluminum rear doors. Fiberglass is what's used for tool boxes. Fiberglass wouldn't hold up in any crash testing.
@@Wicked_RotF30 I did put my aluminum magnet on it and it didn't stick...
The hooks for a garbage bag
Good to know!!
The hook is for purses
Purses? Really? Have you seen this disclosed in a manual somewhere?
@@Miguelsgarage wasn’t meant to be ridiculous or anything. They’re for grocery bags and/or handbags.
hook a small garbage bag
man, how tall are u? XD
trash bag goes on the hook
These never could compete with a 2500 suburban . The excursion is dangerous with big trailers. The suspension is way underated and unsafe and the brakes are substandard for any towing. The 6.0 chevy ran all over these v10s and 7.3 .the gm tranny is bulletproof the 4r100 was the worst trans ever made every 36 k it needs replaced. Had all three still have the chevy 400 k plus and still on the road. The two fords were in the shop monthly always needed a couple grand worth of repairs plus neither engine could get a heavy load moving on a long grade.
I'm glad I ran across your video I've been looking for as many positive reviews I can find because I'm trying to get financing for a 2001 Ford excursion limited
Same here! A 2001 as well lol
