I always kind of liked Steel's origin, because it's an inversion of the "for me it was Tuesday" villain trope, where it's one act of charity out of thousands that Superman has done that cause this guy to step up and become a hero in his own right. It's surprising that considering how gimmicky the Death of Superman storyline was, they really got some good stories out of it, both during and after his death. The idea of various aspirants to Superman's legacy turning up was a great one, and it made for a good character study of Superman by splitting aspects of his character (the remote alien, the teenage power fantasy, the relentless judge of evil, and Steel as the everyman hero who steps up because it's the right thing to do) into other characters.
@@jamesburchill7522 Hard disagree. If the movie had stuck to the comics it would have been a much better film. Some of the broad strokes are the same, but the finer details are almost all wrong.

Apparently they couldn’t find any stunt man tall enough, so Shaq had to do all of his own stunts. From what I’ve read Johnson originally wanted Westley Snipes, but the studio made him cast Shaq thinking he would sell more toys. Honestly I’m glad they did. If Snipes had gotten the role we would probably not have had him as Blade.

I don't think this would have stopped him. And the movies Blade are good, but unless you already know, its hard to believe Blade is part of any sort of comic universe. And tbh....Wesley snipes sucked. But he didn't flee until after he made so much money that the IRS got sus and where his taxes was.

I always thought the funniest thing about this film was the inclusion of a mask/helmet. It's one thing to buy into the whole Superman/Clark Kent "glasses" thing but it's not like if Shaq takes the suit off, he can somehow make himself NOT seven-feet-tall.

I held one of his sneakers at a sports memorabilia dealer’s table once. I’m 6’2” and I could have used the thing as a canoe. It was insane. Soooo… “no”. Shaq definitely does NOT blend in with crowds. ;)

Thank you for watching this at last. In truth, my brother was going to send a vhs copy of Steel your way, but I'm glad I check the spreadsheets and stopped him. Otherwise, there would probably be four copies now. Seeing this really gave me joy. I've been going through a rough week, as my pet rabbit is sick. She's healing, but because she's seven years old, the process is slow and steady. Looking forward to seeing more SBIG! Great job! Keep it up.

I don't understand how after the abysmal failure that was Kazaam, he thought "yeah I should make another movie, in fact a super hero movie", but then they take a DC hero, and change the entire story about him, how the hell did they think this would work?

I have to agree with Erin, the 1989 Batman cereal was AWESOME!!! Really wish they'd bring it back out!
Some TH-cam channel ate a bowl of that cereal, still in its packaging from 89 and said it tasted great. I was a kid back then, but I also remember it tasting pretty good. Wish I could try it with a 2023 palette.

When I was like 8 or 9, back in 1997(ish), this lady my mom worked with at a dress shop had a birthday party we went to and Shaq showed up there. Apparently she was next door neighbors to Shaq when he was a kid and took care of him quite a lot. She told him I was going to be there and, I was the only kid there if I remember correctly, and he got me a toy from the Primal Rage video game. I remember he said "Hey kid I heard you liked video games" in that super deep weird voice. He was super nice from what my little kid mind remembers.
The wheelchair scenes cracked me up more than they should have😂

i remember watching this movie as a kid, i always wanted to rewatch but my memory was so fuzzy i always thought this was somehow an obscure iron man movie.
As often as Jason said, "shaft" in this review, I'm disappointed that no one told him to, "shut yo' mouth"

Apparently, this was supposed to be a Superman spinoff but things just happened and we got this. It’s still anguilty pleasure of mine. Shaq is just a cool dude.
Very loosely based on the Superman spin-off. No Metropolis, no red cape, and no mention of Superman except maybe for Shaq's tattoo. But they had to work with what they had back then.
@@MrDman21 if I remember correctly, it was supposed to be set after Tim Burton’s Superman with Nick Cage. It would tie in with Superman’s death and it would have been really neat to see what could have been. Instead, we got… this.

Honestly, I think this movie deserves a remake. If they can turn Judge Dredd into Dredd they can do a good standalone adaptation of the character from Reign of the Supermen (without it being about four Supermen and a "dead" Kal-El). Just don't make the same mistake this film did and omit all the Metropolis lore.

This wouldn't even be that bad if the action would hold up.
Shaq doesn't use his sledgehammer to whack stuff. He doesn't use his enormous size to stop driving cars or run through walls. And the more active scenes are lame. Like when he grapples away and awkwardly climbed over the railing or when he rescues the guy from the chopper and just falls.
Oh, and there should be a scene where a bunch of people just wail on him, but he no-sells it by being a mountain.
Sparky was the real superhero here. I mean seriously, she designed everything and even had time to attach guns and thrusters to her chair.
Shaq's dad was actually a Drill Sargent, so this wasn't a terrible role lol🤣

Fun fact; John Henry is a fictional character ,( like Paul Bunyan) he was a steel driver for the rail road company that drilled holes in rock to put explosive in .he was the strongest fastest "steel driver" and died winning a man vs machine drilling contest , his legend was a hundred yr before ,D.C comics

You forgot batman and robin it killed batman off till Nolan rebooted it in 2005 Warner bro just wanted a toy advent and picking Clooney as batman Arnold Schwarzenegger as freeze was a bad choice and letting the toy companies make the vehicle designs was a terrible mistake that what you get when you throw out a good director like tim Burton and let schmacer take his place just to sell toys and Macdonald's burgers
Sparks is basically a knockoff of another DC character called Oracle. After Barbara Gordon was shot and paralyzed by the Joker in the 1988 story "The Killing Joke" (among other very dark things he did to her in that story) she stopped being Batgirl and became Oracle, a wheelchair bound hacker that helped Batman and other heroes fight crime with her computer skills. She had a really interesting arc in dealing with the trauma. They ended up curing her and making her Batgirl again in 2011.

Yeah, one of the replacements made when Superman died. DC killed him off when his sales were slumping, and I suckered into buying two copies of the comic where he died. And, of course, it's not worth much because they printed so many copies of it. But hey, if there hadn't been a Superboy Prime from that crap, we never would have gotten The Red Hood ...
@@Uncultured_Barbarian465 Superboy Prime came from Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), not the Death of Superman... He missed that entire event as he didn't return until Infinite Crisis (2005). The Superboy from Death/Return of Superman was the Superboy that Superboy Prime became jealous of.

The biggest weakness is pretty much the unsatisfying action.
Shaq doesn'T go around smashing stuff, he doesn't throw stuff, he doesn't do crazy jumps or anything. He is a huge mountain of a man and the movie doesn't use that at all.

Cannon's Masters of the Universe has Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella and Meg Foster doing nicely. And both of those are still more enjoyable than this film. :P

I remember Batman cereal! I even remember Batman Returns cereal, which was also a thing. 😆 And they were totally different cereals. Batman was basically bat-shaped Cap'n Crunch (similar to Mr. T cereal), and the Batman Returns cereal was more like chocolate Chex, with marshmallow shapes.

I remember when this was advertised, we were all hyped that this was some precursor to the death of Superman and that it was in the works. We were hoping to see Doomsday and the four Supermen.
