Also I forgot to mention it in the video but a huge inspiration to start doing these came from Primal Liquid's challenge runs over on his channel so if you haven't yet, go check him out!

Starting equipment only (Weapons, Armor, Materia, Accessories)
No materia swapping
No Accessories
Items are okay
LV4 Limits are okay
If a character doesn't have something when I get them then I can't use it!

Dude I did this in real time. As a kid I didn’t learn how to switch out my equipment til I got to costa del sol! My dad kept asking why I didn’t switch my equipment, and I was like, “chill dad, when I level up it will change to something new.” Looking back, I’m really lucky he was so patient with me.
I bet that was a fun experience and a good memory to look back on!
When I was a kid, chrono trigger was my first RPG ever. I didn't know you could equip different weapons and armor on my whole first play through
The memories this game left me with are more valuable to me than almost anything …
I remember looking at it in magazines before release and literally crying because I longed so much to play it. And it actually lived up to that insane hype of mine.
i went to juvenile hall for 3 months and had my mom get me thew ff7 strategy book and it helped me escape that place mentally i couldnt have had a better distraction at the time.i think it was in 1997 it was right around when the game came out but before i ever played it.

I did this when I was in High school, I did the added challenge of no materia too. So it was brutal, cait sith was the saving grace due to his ability to use magic and summons with slots. Also Vincent's LBs for stat boosts. Wad insanely hard when you get to end game, the rest of it is just grind exp to be a high level.

Really should have used grenades a whole lot more in Midgar, they're simply superior to anything else you can do, damage wise.

I am playing through the game again for the first time in about 15 years and I have to say you made excellent use of the mechanics. Definitely worth watching the whole video to see someone take down bizarro with such a unique approach

The omnislash and for the ending was most likely animated specifically with the buster sword during development when you think about it :o

FF8 can easily be beaten with not upgrading weapons. Unless, you aren't allowed to make items through cards and turn them into passive skills, then that might be a problem. You don't need new weapons in FF8. You just need GFs. Base GFs( Quezocotal Shiva and Ifrit only, might be impossible. FF8 is all about GFs and making items you get from cards or Drawing.

What does beginning equipment entail? Do you just use the magic you start with too? Can you use items? I might try this
If you look in the description I outlined the rules that I used for this, but you can change it however you like for your own run :)
So what stopped you from using enemy skill materia with red 13? Also, could you farm items from enemies? Like mp draining items or status giving items? I saw that you farmed x potions so maybe I already have an answer

I did this with the first Kingdom Hearts when it came out, but that was because I was sick and never thought to change the keyblade, etc. I felt so stupid when I realized.
Nice video. My rules would be materia switching is okay, but offensive items like grenades are a no no.
I mean if a Cloud only Necrosis run is possible then this should be no biggie either.

doesnt the yuffie wutai quest re-equip all materia she stole at random if you finish it? That would technically make some better materia since you didnt equip it yourself?
know this is old but kinda popped into my head
I had to rewatch what I did exactly cause it was a long time ago, and yes you are correct if you do yuffie's side quest the materia does get reshuffled after you finish. However, that side quest is only available on discs 1 and 2, you can go to wutai on disc 3 without getting your materia stolen, which is when I grinded out the items right before going back into the northern crater!

You can since the LAST party members still have enough materia slots to KoTR Emerald/Ruby weapon to death while STILL having 9999 HP on Cid Cait Sith or Yuffie.
You can run passed the Zolom on foot. It's possible, I mean.
I tried this challenge once, back in the 2000's I think. I got to the last boss in Temple of Ancients, which is I think around halfway through the game. The Demon Wall just did me in, even with decent levels.

That is correct! No materia swapping or equip, no weapon, armor, or accessories can be swapped or changed either for the run :)
I want to do a run similar to this. No materia run but able to equip top gear
Initial equipment does not include materia, that has its own category of initial materia or no materia, otherwise unspecified means you're not forbidden from changing it
You realize you can skip the midgar serpent just by getting a chocobo but it is impressive how you beat it with only one character.
I can be incredibly stubborn when inconvenienced

Cool run! I'm kind of amazed you know enough to complete the run, yet still felt you had to beat Midgar zolom. You can easily just run past it....

There are 3 ways. 1) chocobo, 2) run across and menu/save/reset before he catches you, and 3) just wait at the pointy spot until mz goes off to the left, then run straight across. Not too tough at all 👍🏻
Gerald Ford I think he knows how to avoid the Zolom, I think he meant he never tried to fight it when you first encounter it. I only did the same myself a few months ago, feels great to get Beta early on.
You need chocobo Materia to catch a chocobo though :(

That was pretty awesome. I just recently did a level 6 run on Crisis Core. This seems interesting. But sadly, I'm a complestionist at heart. So, I would have to beat the super bosses as well. I don't think I want to suffer through that, lol.

@@kevinwright6159 It might be possible, if you could some how get party members set up with 7,777 HP. Though, on this type of challenge. That would be a bit harder to do. If possible at all.
You should really check out GarlandTheGreat, he does all those challenges for years!
Impossible Emerald weapon would still have at least 440,000 HP left after the 64 x 7777 hits are over so I still would need to KoTR THE REST of its HP to death and even Ruby weapon will STILL survive those hits and I would still need to KoTR the rest of its HP to death.
@@veghesther3204 if you set up multiple characters with 7,777 HP is still only 64 hits, or does it become 192? It's been awhile since I've done it. But I think that's how I beat Emerald Weapon before. Or at the very least, I remember trying it. It was in the year 99 or 2000. So, it was a long time ago, lol

I did this accidentally on purpose when I was 8 years old because I didn't know any better
I always solo the GS with Cloud because I just let him tank hits and only hit with his Limit to get to 1x2 quicker
How does cloud have magic? He doesn’t start with it.
Cloud starts with both lightning and ice magic, whereas red comes equipped with fire and all combo 👍

This is why I say Vincent is largely useless because once he has his limit break and you can't control him, he can no longer do regular attacks.

So you know takes a little bit of timing but it is possible to get past the Big snake without the Materia. without having to fight it at all

Jenova is capable of Opening with Aqualung,. She can also do it throughout the fight in general. " im glad for you that she didnt.. Took me ages to get past it.

It was a very enlightening run, and on the whole running from combat thing, I think I maybe did it sometimes but mostly fought each fight because levels were the only way of upping damage on the characters pretty much so fighting every encounter lessened the strain of grinding even if by just a small margin. I got lucky on some of the boss fights but hojo was just a huge dps check and if I didn't outlast his mp that one time I probably would have just ended the run out of frustration tbh lmao. Definitely learned a lot with this run and also wutai is now my favorite grind location because of easy x-potions and barrier items.
Why didn't you use Yuffie instead of Vincent, since one of Yuffie's limit breaks is a Heal+all?

Would be cool to take the stuff you've already done and did a "This is all the boss fights from the game and a brief timeline of the story" for people who have forgotten all of this. I so forgot Hojo changed forms, and that 1/2 purple and red guy. Lots of stuff. It'd be interesting to see what all we can expect to find in Remake parts 2 and 3, and using these sorta 'speed run' things to piece together some ideas of what we might find.

Items definitely helped, but towards the endgame it's pretty much lv 3 magic spam with Cloud and Red and a item hound keeping everyone healthy lol
If he didnt change the materia how does he has all materia equipped?
When Red joins your party he joins with Fire and All connected when you fight the Hojo experiment, Cloud and Red are the only characters that have the basic elemental magic when you get them.

Just run past the Zolom. He is easy to avoid on foot.
Neat to see this was possible, but must have been tedious and extremely boring.
Why not use Enemy Skill Materia, and collect all of the best Enemy Skills? This would give 1 character a great amount of versatility.
That would work and could be really effective, but for the rules I set on myself I couldn't use any materia if it didn't come with a character when I got them :)
@BakaBenny ahh! I thought it was just a limit on actual equipment like weapons/gear. Not allowing yourself to change materia makes it much worse.

Trying to beat Emerald Weapon within 20 minutes with such low damage output is probably impossible. But hey, at least you wouldn't have to worry about Aire Tam Storm.
The only chance I could think of is using gravity items, even then 20 min is just too short a time. Might work for Ruby tho.
Or just roll Cait Siths slots. ;)

Its doable some party members Red 13 Cait Sith Vincent Cid and Possibly Yuffie have ENOUGH weapon and armor slots for 2 mastered HP and MP pluses for 9999 HP 999 MP AND can still have slots left over for KoTR HP absorb and Mime it to death at lvs OVER 60.
No accessories however and Ruby weapon is IMPOSSIBLE TO KoTR even IT to death at lvs over 60 so Ribbon user against it is a must.
Ruby weapon is IMMUNE TO BOTH the Demi spells and the ITEMS that cause it and even the LASER enemy skill will FAIL to damage Ruby weapon.
Without Magic Plus even Demi magic can FAIL against Emerald weapon but is useless Demi 3 doing 9999 to Emerald weapon won't even restore 999 HP via HP absorb making Demi completely useless.
Great run dude! Really enjoyed it. Tried this run myself during the dreaded 'Rona and couldn't beat Bizarro. Needed to level up way more, but just never gpt back to it...
Might i suggest the Attack/Limits only run? No items or magic in battle which leaves Yuffoe as your only source of Healing (Or Vincent's Transformations) That was a blast to run through, with some sticky points here and there.
(Also, I don't know if you're inclined to glitch, but when i tried this run i grabbed the Glitched Elixir in Great Glacier til I had 99)
That sounds enticing actually! might have to give it a try! (although I personally stay away from glitches but have no hate for it haha)

How did Vincent go from 5000 HP to 3000? Seems like this may have been faked…
Yo! not to worry, I had to play it back to figure out what you meant and so - If you are referring to the health difference at the end of the game it's primarily because of all the extra grinding we did between wutai and the sephiroth fight. If you are referring to the jenova fight in the crater then it's because when Vincent uses the death gigas limit break his health doubles when using that form as well as us losing control of the character.
this is a classic challenge, but technically you don't start with an accessory so you can use those too.... At the very least the first 3-how ever party members there are that you find

unfortunately sometimes yt doesn't like that so as to try and avoid that issue I try to keep it in, or at the very least try and find something non distracting. I'd like to say I've gotten better about that haha!
You didn't beat Hojo on a fluke! When it says the power is used up it's because he ran out of MP. You outlived his MP pool. So when the AI wanted to cast a spell it didn't work :)

if this is asking about the Hyper/Tranq effects which I am thinking is the question, Hyper puts a character into fury status which increases limit gauge fill, atb time goes faster, makes the chara take more damage, and buffs atk power at the cost of debuffing either vitality or defense. it can also cure the sadness effect. Tranquilizers on the other hand make the limit gauge fill slower, slower atb time, buffs defense at the cost of debuffing atk or strength still unsure of which it actually effects, and can cure the fury status.

Wait you said starting items ,why did you buy grenades? Starting run means no items only the items you get with your character,no healing items no grenades no nothing. Your run is flawed.

@@sir.raphimrevelator8644 it says starting equipment,which means any items the characters started with such as potions (if any ) and materia such as nanakis materia as well . Cloud didn't start with all those options and high potions and revives ,I own the game myself .if your going to buy items that you didn't start with that's not an "only starting equipment run" an only starting equipment run is not buying any items ,not opening up chests not picking up any items in the game . You use EACTLY what your character started with . He didn't give nanaki or barret grenades ,he kept tifa with her glove and armor as well . I'm just saying if your going for an only starting equipment run that locks you out of shops and world items as well.
