Of course you can. Thing is, I never use healing items in RPGs myself. Why use items that cost GP when you can simply use healing magic or a healing skill... That or simply heal at one of the free healing/save points. In games where there is free healing, why waste money on inns? Anyway, in FF7, always having played this way I didn't use materia because since I was lazy I found it to cumbersome to learn... and I didn't want to use items because their healing properties sucked and cost money. So instead I grinded in the game and used inns to heal myself. It was only when I was about to face off against the last Dungeons that became interested in the materia since it seemed interesting... but by then there was no point in learning how it worked since the game was almost over and I didn't need it in order to win. So it was only after I had beaten the game and I started playing it to find all hidden secrets I had missed that I started using materia.

Her limits would charge almost twice as fast.
NGPlus just did a Limits Only run and he actually needed Mindblow to prevent Rapps from using Aero3. I was amazed, but it did in fact have a critical use.

I estimate the break in the playthrough happened around the return to Midgar since at that point the script stops referring to the characters by their renames.
My late dad, who played FF7 for many years on and off, like 20 yrs or something, would play no materia runs, or speedruns, to make the game more interesting. Sadly we don't have any recorded footage of it. No materia is possible, but requires lotsa EXP grinding and items farming - monsters at the Wutai continent drop a helluva lot X-Potion and Bolt Plumes and Fire Veils for instance. Plus, with no materia you can equip no slot weapons found at the Temple of Ancients, which are considerably strong. Try the no materia run for size! One thing to remember is to take Barret, Yuffie or Vincent, since they got long range weapons and some enemies, like Ultima Weapon, can only be damaged by such.
Hey Primal I've been in discussion on how to make this an even more difficult challenge. Rules... 1. 🚫No mods. So, the challenge cannot officially begin until after leaving Midgar. So, use whatever means necessary until you leave for Kalm. 2. Once on the world map. The challenge officially begins. 3. Unequip all materias except the one Enemy Skill you acquired from Sample. 4. 🚫No items (in battle or in menu). 5. 🚫No accessories (weapon and equipment changes allowed however). 6. Nothing else is allowed to be equipped to slots, except that one Enemy Skill you have, all the way until Junon. This means no Chocobo Lure either. So you'll never have a Chocobo encounter (so, no Chobunkle either). You'll have to use other means to cross the marsh. 7. Only one Enemy Skill equipped per party member. 8. 🚫No Manipulation or Confuse Materia allowed. So, you can never learn Big Guard, White Wind, or Magic Hammer. (Remember, strictly one Enemy Skill per member only, absolutely nothing else is allowed). 9. You can only heal, remove statuses, and restore MP by using Inns, healing wells, and NPCs throughout the playthrough. So you'll need to stay close to towns, and the few natural healing sources scattered throughout the game for grinding. I'm not sure if this is possible unless somehow you can at least grab Magic Hammer without Manipulate (which I don't think is possible). I'd like to know one way or the other. -Roger Clio, Michigan, USA
I’m guessing yes because you can be in fury heal with yuffie use omnislash and anger max and high wind and equip things like sprint shoes those barriers and ribbons on top of being able to equip things like tifa with the power soul and the cursed ring on top of being able to grind sources to just dodge every attack with speed and luck ... now I wanna do this run myself lol
There are a few weapons in the game that could have helped tremendously. Powersoul/master fist + cursed ring on Tifa is a low level/ speedrun stapple, with her lvl4 limit you one shot most bosses even at low level. And then you have the weapons where your attack is doubled or tripled when you have respectively 1 or 2 characters dead. The yoshiyuki for cloud and the princess guard for Aerith. Did you equip the missing score on Barret at the end? That the only explanation for the low damage since the missing score's attack power depend on the exp of the equipped materias. No materia on the weapon and armor = 1 atk. The damage formula uses the character level twice as a multiplier so going from lvl 70 to 90 increases the damage by 65% (actually more than that since strength also increases when you level up).
i just didnt want to cheese with tifa so i didnt go for that route, as for missing score, yes i had it on and the reason for that is the damage calculation for AP is scuffed (or just flat out ignored) for limit breaks, and i had planned to rely on them for the damage so i decided to keep it on since the damage increase over his 2nd best was still pretty major when using limits
I didn't even after the Power Soul/Master fist + cursed ring with a LV 65 Tifa even do 3000 per hit while still having HER use Knights of the round for 5000 to 6000 x13 hits.
Bloodfest, the move capable of dealing more damage to a single target than omnislash itself - if that single target is the only one left alive that is. Yuffie is boss
I HAD BOTH do CRAP for damage even at lv 65 I still barely had Omnislash do 2500 to 3000 per hit and I had Blood Fest/Doom of the Living barely top 500 to 1000 damage PER hit.
Except that CRAP for damage I had Yuffie do IS with the Conformer equipped I still had it barely do 500 per hit to EMERALD weapon vs KoTR STILL doing over 5000 x13 hits at lv 65.\ I still did that crap per Omnislash hits to Emerald weapon at full 9999 HP lv 65 and Cloud's Ultimate weapon equipped and still had KoTR do 5000 to 6000 x13 hits to bosses when I had Cloud summon it. So yes I HAD NOTHING outdamage KoTR at all.
Look at this guy, acting like lvl 65 is the lvl cap and that you can't possibly be any stronger than that, he probably doesn't understand that materia affects your stats too... but he for sure can't understand the words that i wrote down
It isn't but after using KoTR against Emerald/Ruby weapon I only hit lv 70 and did NOT LV all the way up to LV 99 at all. EVEN with NO materia that decreases Str besides KoTR used since HP and MP plus HP absorb and Mime don't increase/decrease Str I still only had Doom of the Living at my end of game lvs 65 to lv 70 barely top 500 damage to ANYTHING with the Conformer equipped including against Emerald/Ruby weapon. BUT NOTHING would outdamage a W summoned KoTR even if all 26 Knights via W summoning it ONLY did 5000 to 6000 per Knight. So I would NEVER NOT fight Carry armor even WITH the Infinite HP/MP/Limit cheat ON unless you KoTR it to death.
Not many know- for the final Sephiroth battle, you can flick a booger at him and he will die. It's in the programming whatever you choose to do, he will perish regardless. Stand there with your thumb in your ass, grab a beer, do a few jumping jacks, whatever- he will kick the bucket (even if your attack "misses", which i have never seen) Ofc, Omnislash works too.
I think you took a break between the hydra and Fire Genova, around 18:05 Just going through your vids while waiting for the next FF12 randomiser video XD
I Did a no Materia No Grinding and No Exploits "including Slots" run Went well, Technically is completed, But My completion mark was Emerald.. Which at level 55 is just not possible especially with my lack of powerful equipment and level 1 limits. Which was a bit sad for me as technically its my first failed run
with no grinding id love to know how you got past shizo and managed to out damage bizaro's healing since you also say lack of powerful equipment, so that leads me to believe no ultimate weapons
@@Primalliquid92 Lack of powerful equipment meant Zidrich and .... i actually can't remember what the other high level stealable equipment is. i had Yuffies conformer, and that was the only ultimate weapon i had,... Shizo was no problem for me. Elemental absorbing equipment and focused down 1 head at a time. I figured it might be a difficulty spike boss but it was not for me. Bizzaro took forever -.- but yeah Conformer does the job, Actually was Semi responsible for the end of me at one point because he used Heartless angel just before he died and 2 others were poisoned, so i went in to safer with yuffie at 1hp. But with a combination of Clear tranquil and Lunatic High i had the healing and defence i needed as well as haste that with Fury is how i cleared most of the game what you said though, about it being harder in certain places than you thought it would be. and easier in others. i had the same feeling. It was not as hard a run as i thought it would be. But some of the Difficulty spikes far outweighed what i thought they would be. Sorry for the essay
If you were interested. my current Final Party for attempting Emerald is. Level 55 Cloud. Limit Level 2, Ultima Weapon. Mystile. Ribbon. 4331 hp. Level 52 Yuffie. Limit Level 1 Conformer. Imperial Guard. No acc currently 3556 hp Level 52 Red 13. Limit Level 1 Limited moon. Bolt Armlet. No acc currently and 4069 hp. That is what i am mostly locked in to now as everything else would be grinding by my parameters
Actually even in the FIRST battle Cloud still starts the game WITH Bolt usable so a materia only run would be too easy sure you can't use items in battle but you don't NEED items in order to use Knights of the round on every boss in game starting with Carry armor itself.
I thought you'd be doing more limit jumping than you did. Aries(th)'s if I recall correctly Seal Evil stops not only the safe boss in Nibelheim but the Demon Wall for pretty much the entire battle. Then again it might be different for an attack only run.
Final Fantasy VII is the only one that's this easy. VI and VIII undeniably require a bit more strategy and planning. And even then, this no materia no items run was a severe handicap that caused a lot of game overs that wouldn't happen if you use materia or items. VII suffers from being too easy at times but it's not completely mindless.
yo Mr. liquid big fan of your channel i just started recording this same challenge of no Materia, was dumb and didnt check if anyone posted a vid on it is it okay if still do it and credit u??
He did Hyper up eventually, some time around the Carry Armor fight. He held back on a few tricks for longer than necessary, like Limit Break unlocking which can be done as early as you have access to Hyper/Potion and fights at the same time.
@@Primalliquid92 Strangely enough, not that difficult, and doesn't take too long. Plenty of potions drop, just kill enemies and it will unlock after some time.

Makes me wonder, barring the materia on the ground after fights. Which ones are forced into your inventory? Like Cloud has ice and bolt, but I can't recall beyond that.
red XIII has Fire, Cait has manip and transform, Yuffie has throw. I can't think of many you *have* to pick up after fights, the only one I can recall is the counter attack materia after materia keeper

So, uh, about how I Die D:, well, died in that sewer boss fight... you put her in the back row. That boss only uses its physical attack on party members who are in the back row, and since I Die D: was the only one in the back row, she was the only available target for those physical strikes.

@@veghesther3204 You need to try harder. lmao
Except that CRAP for damage I had Yuffie do IS with the Conformer equipped I still had it barely do 500 per hit to EMERALD weapon vs KoTR STILL doing over 5000 x13 hits at lv 65.\
I still did that crap per Omnislash hits to Emerald weapon at full 9999 HP lv 65 and Cloud's Ultimate weapon equipped and still had KoTR do 5000 to 6000 x13 hits to bosses when I had Cloud summon it.

Another great video!
How did you enter the Bizarro Sephiroth fight nearly completely healed and all three of your characters having limit breaks?
Just found your channel and I love your content!! Question: how much do you hate yourself lol
watch the videos and find out!
"We actually have a full game to play"
Lol
hell yeah primal liquid my favorite final fantasy creator. all the best challenge runs for the best game series of all time
:)
Not many know- for the final Sephiroth battle, you can flick a booger at him and he will die. It's in the programming whatever you choose to do, he will perish regardless. Stand there with your thumb in your ass, grab a beer, do a few jumping jacks, whatever- he will kick the bucket (even if your attack "misses", which i have never seen)
Ofc, Omnislash works too.
His attack can't kill you, and Cloud auto-counters.
@@Rob_Thorsman I know👍🏻
I think you took a break between the hydra and Fire Genova, around 18:05
Just going through your vids while waiting for the next FF12 randomiser video XD
But with a combination of Clear tranquil and Lunatic High i had the healing and defence i needed as well as haste that with Fury is how i cleared most of the game
what you said though, about it being harder in certain places than you thought it would be. and easier in others. i had the same feeling.
No acc currently 3556 hp
Level 52 Red 13. Limit Level 1 Limited moon. Bolt Armlet. No acc currently and 4069 hp.
That is what i am mostly locked in to now as everything else would be grinding by my parameters
This guy is a beast
So you can use Phoenix downs after battle?
didnt play ff7 but love your work! bravo zulu
How did you manage to get omnislash for the final attack without materia? All those points in the battle arena with no materia? 🤔
by winning the first 4-5 fights and then retiring to keep the points
Next Final Fantasy 14 without actions.
why didnt you hyper yer team? double limit breaks would be pretty handy for this
He did, that's what fury is
Dude this was gunna be my challenge run. I wanted to see if this was possible.
Loving the video Primal. Another great FF challenge as usual. How would a materia only, no attack, no limits, no items in battle run look…?
probably end sometime around the first battle since you cant flee
Actually even in the FIRST battle Cloud still starts the game WITH Bolt usable so a materia only run would be too easy sure you can't use items in battle but you don't NEED items in order to use Knights of the round on every boss in game starting with Carry armor itself.
@@veghesther3204 good luck breeding a gold chocobo without being able to throw a green at the 3 necessary plain chocobo
@@andrewrenshaw2741 I remember beating the game without any special Chocobos. Or am I wrong here?
Why specifically single out Cloud and Red XIII in the rules?
90 seconds in and guessing whether or not we're going for the 7777 hp strat. Guess I'll watch to find out!
I thought you'd be doing more limit jumping than you did. Aries(th)'s if I recall correctly Seal Evil stops not only the safe boss in Nibelheim but the Demon Wall for pretty much the entire battle. Then again it might be different for an attack only run.
If u dont do anything when fighting the bonus sephiroth. After safer sep. Cloud will just attack. And you ll beat him aswell.
This dude DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH SUBS OR VIEWS. This is a great channel and the dude deserves more
And people say modern Final Fantasy games are just "press square" and the older ones require strategy LOL
I don’t know why you didn’t use Hyper to get more heals from both Aerith and Yuffie and used
Tranquilizers on back row characters
He did Hyper up eventually, some time around the Carry Armor fight.
He held back on a few tricks for longer than necessary, like Limit Break unlocking which can be done as early as you have access to Hyper/Potion and fights at the same time.
Im glad Primal is on "I Die" team and not "boobs"
A true man of culture.
loving these vids lol. those names though :p
I'm surprised you didn't grind for meteorain before the Guard Scorpion.
that would have been a little to much imo
@@Primalliquid92 Strangely enough, not that difficult, and doesn't take too long. Plenty of potions drop, just kill enemies and it will unlock after some time.
im not on about the time taken or the difficulty, i mean how it would have completely trivilised the early game
@@Primalliquid92 Yeah that's true, there is no early game left :P
Very nice, good job with the challenge! I would be interested if you can beat the game with only limit breaks. No normal attacks, no materia, no items, just limit breaks. Is that possible?
No, i've tried it, early game is impossible due to no healing
>Yuffie
>Tifa
>Cloud in Drag

>Aerith
Undisputed tier list
:O
i like this just for the comment, wait this isn't the remake, we don't have to stop here
Do you have any vids about FF5?
It's one of my guilty pleasures, and my go to drunk solo game.
Also you should absolutely try Lufia the legend returns, one of my absolute favorite rpgs.
Either way your dedication is insane and I love your vids!
i have a blind playthrough of it but it was a stream series
Favorite challenge run content is back, time for another 30min banger!~
Makes me wonder, barring the materia on the ground after fights. Which ones are forced into your inventory? Like Cloud has ice and bolt, but I can't recall beyond that.
red XIII has Fire, Cait has manip and transform, Yuffie has throw. I can't think of many you *have* to pick up after fights, the only one I can recall is the counter attack materia after materia keeper
Funny theory, Aerith is actually selling the flower you really wanted. It seem there is a correlation with flower and prostitution in japan. Plus how would someone live off selling a single flower basket
Love the work dude! Could you play the New Threat+ mod?
Why didn't you use the "inn" SHINRA tower?
24:56 Since english is not my first langage, I had to listen twice you know 🤔
So, uh, about how I Die D:, well, died in that sewer boss fight... you put her in the back row. That boss only uses its physical attack on party members who are in the back row, and since I Die D: was the only one in the back row, she was the only available target for those physical strikes.
