Saving a Vintage Wedding Dress

- I bought this 1930s vintage wedding dress at a garage sale for $1. It was in pretty bad shape because it had been used as a theatre costume. I had already fixed most of the bigger problems by the time I had decided to make this video but come along while I restore and alter this dress as well as make a quick Juliet cap veil.

Oh wow. That satin is like liquid light. It makes me so happy that you saved this dress while still keeping the vintage vibe. Magnificent.
Oh my goodness?! I have this overwhelming urge to go to that store and SLAP that alterations person. You NEVER say that stuff OUT LOUD to a BRIDE. You buck up and say, "You look gorgeous, let's see how we can make this fit better". GAH!

Loved the ending. I have a 1940s wedding dress with its original veil and slip. When I bought my house the owners left it in the attic. I didn’t know it was even there only when we started cleaning out the place for remodeling. It’s thick satin with such intricate details. Also looks handmade, not store bought. Keep up your sewing, I’m new to your channel.

My grandparents (dad’s parents) left my mom’s wedding gown in their attic when they moved. My mom was so devastated by that. I would love to have worn it.

The end of this video was so adorable, it put a massive grin in my face. Which I needed after a long day.
Also, the seamstress shouldn’t have said that. Even meaning “this is going to take a lot of work to get it down that many sizes”, it was still an awful thing to say. She could have said “now, because we have to reduce the size so much, it might take a while, and it might not turn out perfectly”. That would be a decent warning. But NEVER should anyone say “you should have chosen a different dress”. That’s just not okay, and honestly, that was deserving of a complaint, especially given how it made you feel.
And the music, so cute!
And it's always important to remember that it is one person's opinion. She could have been thinking of the extra money that would be spent to get the dress to fit. Another thing to remember is that not everyone had good people skills and say things they have no idea could have been worded much better. But being a young bride, it's difficult to already know these things!
I'm very impressed by you for what you've done!!!! My mum use to have a large Spanish table. When she was moving the rest of the family nearly threw it away but I insisted on saving it so we managed to give it to charity. About a week later I found out that it was sold for £100 pounds so obviously I was really happy to find out about the Spanish table!! Awesome!!😉😊🥰😍😎👍

This was ur 1st video that I discovered. Am hoping to be married next July & really want a vintage gown. I have been engaged 2x before & almost a 3rd time (le sigh). I picked out a dress w/ the 1st one from a thrift store & I was surprised that it had such an Edwardian feel. I'm open to anything vintage that flatters my shape. Hate the modern gowns that look painted on gal's bodies (shudders). '40s style gowns usually flatter my shape & I am wanting to try to semi recreate my g-ma's wedding from '47. But I am open to Edwardian too cuz there is a lot of stuff from the 40s that looks Edwardian at times, esp the leg of mutton sleeves or the broader sleeves.

I appreciate the work that you put into this dress & your experience from your wedding. I have taken a size14 wedding gown down to a 6 before. I also take moms wedding dress & make it fit the modern bride’s body & style. Thats a fun & intimidating part of my job. After adding the necessary slip with all the layers, that will shorten the skirt length. Also you need to add tulle inside to the upper sleeves to puff them out.

The end result is so stunning.
I wanted to wear my mother’s wedding dress when I got married. My grandmother made it for my mother. We took it to the dry cleaners… it disintegrated. I cried for days afterwards. Now that I know a lot more about fabric (I did sew back then, but wasn’t as familiar or concerned with the care and feeding of my garments), I would never take that dress to the dry cleaner. All that LACE! 😢 And as it was made in the 1960s, the satin was likely a synthetic blend (aka acetate). I would have washed it by hand and spot cleaned any stains, or I would have found a cleaner who specialized in vintage and wedding fabrics.

Where you had to repair the rip in the neck/bodice top you could have added a cameo brooch to cover the repair. I know it was barely noticeable, you did great hiding it, but with the brooch it would not be noticeable at all, and a cameo would fit that style perfectly.
