How I Create 1930s Looks On A Budget

- When I started dressing in a vintage style the first thing I did was go to youtube to find tutorials on how to dress vintage. While there are a lot out there for the 1940s and the 1950s I thing the 1930s is a wonderful but mostly overlooked decade. The decade had some of the most gorgeous formals gowns but also really knew how to do causal in a very classy way. Most people can spend the crazy amounts of money it takes to buy a whole wardrobe of true vintage pieces. This is where I hope this video comes in. I really want to help people get the look they want without having to spend an arm and a leg or spending a ton of time sewing all of those outfits. I have assembled 9 different outfit make almost entirely of pieces I found at thrift stores or second hand stores.

Samantha, I just found you and I subscribed to you. I am currently living in Budapest and you would not believe how vintage, 1930’s style dresses are in style here in the city! You can go to any bigger department store and it’s like going into a candy store. Even the big, wide legged pants with narrow waists in Kelly green of all colors being sold here! Skirts galore. The thing girls are doing to “modernize” the look is wearing the bigger, clunky healed white tennis shoes. You would go crazy over here!😀😃 so good to see the classic, modest, feminine look back in style.

The 1930s was the most feminine sexy & glamorous time period in my opinion. Love the 40s & 50s, but why aren't the 30s getting more love? Anyway, LOVED the video!! You rock!💖🌟
I like the 30’s-40’s myself. Some of the 50’s is OK but not my style. The thing with the 30’s is the silhouette is quite slim. So, its harder to do as a full figured woman. I tend to stay in the 40’s the most.
I am totally with you on the 1930s for fashion! The clothes for both men and women are the best in history!

While I am semi-full figured, I am also 5'11". I inherited the uber-muscular calves of my warrior-king ancestors...but managed to also get the long, narrow feet and ankles of a few others. A longer pencil skirt--sometimes with a fluted hem--allows me to accentuate the narrowness of my slim ankles and hide the calves. With a hemline just below the knees--a la 1940's--all you see are these uber-muscular calves of mine. No bueño!!!
I just watched an episode from Project Runway from many years ago, and the challenge was to make a modern outfit inspired from the 1930s.

Love these modern and vintage substitutes for 30's glamor. I hope you do more 30's lookbooks for us, as well as a tutorial on that collar you added to the blue dress. It's not so easy finding the right kind of collar on shirts and dresses.
Great tips! I am slowly building up a 1930s style wardrobe. Since I cannot sew that makes me reliant on finding clothes that have the look. Wide legged trousers are not that hard to find and also culottes. I have found trousers on eBay that are modern day but work. Skirts the same- the long bias cut also on eBay. Blouses I get are repro from Amazon. But I did find a blouse that has a 30s look (made by Asda George ) and paid only a couple of pounds for it second hand on eBay! When I started changing to a 30s style I found that I had put two long skirts away in a suitcase that also have a 30s look. One I'd bought from a charity shop years ago in black with beige flowers on and it has that asymmetric hem. The other was also from a charity shop and is a beige lacy one with also an asymmetric hem. I am on the look out for two 30s style blouses that match them which will give them the look of a dress. Knitwear is easy because they are many ladies who knit the jumpers and cardigans from the patterns I can buy from. I love the collar idea! As for dresses I found a number of 1970s dresses on eBay last year that have a 1930s look so I bought several. What amazed me is that they cost less than buying some new flimsy modern mini dress.

You are so right about finding videos about the 30s. I just love the mid 30s day fashions and am just getting into sewing my own vintage inspired wardrobe. This was great to see and learn from.

Absolutely loved what you did the with long cardigan at 5:00. I need to do that to give my long cardigans some structure and not look so sloppy and casual. I was SO hoping you would tell us where you got the sweater and skirt at 6:43, but you didn't, so I'm thinking you thrifted them, dadgummit. I adored that outfit.

Ginger Rogers is prob my fav 30s icon although Claudette Colbert is fun too. My figure tends to not do so well in 30s outfits cuz I am so busty & have a bit of a poochy tummy. I find the 40s stuff looks better on my hourglass figure. I do have a dress though that I found at a thrift store years ago that reminded me of one that Ginger wears in Top Hat during the Piccolino number. I can only wear it when I'm not too bloated & when I'm down about 3-5lbs. I love swing dancing in it. So much fun. And I found a cloche hat years ago that I adore. It was a repro from a vintage shop
SAME! 1930s style is my fav, but I'm pear-shaped have too much hip for most 1930 stuff to be flattering. 40s and 50s is a lot easier to wear...but I just can't let go of the 30s!

Early 20 century fashion is really underrated
I love a little bit of each decade of the 1900’s. The best advice I received when I started sewing was that if I didn’t make a toile, my good, expensive fabric would be the toile. Zoom classes have brought the price of some sewing classes down plus there are no travel expensive. Right now it’s all jackets and tailoring because that’s what popped up. I love thrift flipping, too!

I'm on a budget and these tips are excellent. I find that I have been doing what this lady suggests and looking at 1930s photos and fashion images, looking at the colours, cut and patterns and then I go thrifting on eBay for garments that look similar.

I cannot believe I have never come across your channel before! I adore the 1930s fashion, having grown up as a little girl with Agatha Christie adaptations from the 80s-90s, and films with Fay Wray, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, etc. When I wanted to start dressing more vintage I thought it was the 1940s and the 1950s that I loved, since that was what most people made content on. But now I realize that it is actually the silhouettes and styles from the 1930s that make my heart soar! I love adding scarves and hats, I love the nod to nautical style, I love the wide leg trousers and trumpet skirts, and the blouses with details on them. I’m so glad to have found this video! Every outfit is so well filmed and edited, and I love your sassiness shining through! You have such good tips!
I was really into the 1950s look, and I dress vintage everyday. Recently Im really getting interested in 1930s/1940s looks, as they compliment my figure more. This is wonderful! I love Clara Bow so much 🥺 and I found a dress by Karen Millen recently that has a bit of that "lily"/trumpet shape skirt that reminds me of the 30s? And vertical buttons plus a V hem on the front. It's nice! On top of that, wrap dresses and halfmoon or v bustlines and butterfly sleeves were very trendy last year and thus are easy to find secondhand!!

Marlene Deitrich's simple outfit of a winter wool trouser suit and overcoat, with a white shirt and the killer item for me - a floral tie. Such a simple and cheap accessory, but you would definately stand out from the crowd wearing that in the office or to an interview.
I love the 1930's - bias cut dresses, tea dresses, florals, soft knitwear, strappy shoes and sandals, then the adoption of a more masculine look, thanks to Coco Chanel, Marlene Deitrich, continued on by Katherine Hepburn. And then there was the glamorous 1930's movie star looks - what is not to like?
My Grandmother got married in the 1930's and her wedding outfit was a cream and navy nautical outfit with a large cream hat and had the vibe of the outfit at 6:33, even the gloves. When she dressed up, she looked great and always refered to her outfits as "costumes" and swore by cube heeled shoes.

Breath of fresh air! I love the 30s...my mum was born in the 30s, I was born in the late 50s so they arent "vintage" enough for me, although I do veer into the 40s occasionally. I love the lines of the 30s though. Great video, I subbed because I am thinking of ressurecting the sewing we got drummed into us at school in the 60s...I hope its like riding a bike? Nah, I have been known to embroider and crochet but knitting's tension freaks me out and I cant deal with electric sewing machines...I am thinking of getting a Singer of some, ancient, description...hand crank or treadle, either works for me lol! Now patterns I am not sure of but theres a lot of vintage ones about. If I can no longer fit in the vintage things I inherited from my Gran and Great Aunts (all clothes horses, 7 of them but my sisters the only one fits them now 😣), then I will attempt to make some. I am actually heavily into making hats at the moment but I fancy doing a blouse or two. I already have the faux collar deals so I am doing not too bad. I was thinking of maybe drawing up a bodice block so I can alter patterns to my dimensions but thats maybe still reaching a bit?
Of all the styles from the first half of the 20th century, my favorite were the 1930s. I loved your recreations - the skirts are a bit shorter than they were during that decade. The lengths you are wearing are more in line with either the 1920s or the 1940s, but the overall look works well.

How about sewing reproduction 1930s hats gloves French patterns and there fashion magazines are great references artdeco number 1 colour is Purple the one color that anyone can find a shade in! We are aware of colors that alter your mood ( red in dinning rooms increase your appetite. Yellow boots energy, blues and green calming used in bedrooms& hospitals gray/ black somber funerary vintage mens ware during the artdeco time frame was in my option the most dapper there is nothing more sexy than a well dressed man. A womans point of view.

I have gotten more interested in the 1930s lately. It is a very feminine decade.
As a fellow Texan, I have to correct you...that there is no such thing as a "sewist". It's grammatically and etymologically incorrect. If you want to utilize a gender-neutral term, the term is "sewer", which has been used in the English language since the 1300's. Yes, I realize that sewer and sewer look the same...but like COUNTLESS other words in English, they can be spelled the same but have different pronunciations and meanings. I have no idea why--it's speculative--why the stitching together of fabric is spelled "sew" in English and pronounced "so", but there you go...yet another homophone in English...like to, too, and two, or there, their, and they're.
You don't call a plumber a "plumbist", or a carpenter a "carpentist"...or a knitter a "knittist".
I prefer "couturier" or fabric artist, since I also knit, spin, weave, crochet, and do other assorted textile arts, but when people ask if I sew, then, yes...I am a sewer.
What do you call someone who creates art? A arter? Or someone who plays the piano? A pianer?
@@Samanthasnow Now...that's where the real question lies...the origin of the task.
For example...I'm a singer, not a "singist"...but also have taught piano and performed on said instrument for many years, as well. Why would they term a performer who sings a singer and yet a performer on the piano a pianist? I suspect it has to do with root word origin, thus etymology. However...I'm not about to begin billing myself a "singist" and pianist just because I feel that somehow changing the suffix enhances the artistic ability. I would be laughed out of the performance community...which is why I don't believe in my heart of hearts that changing the suffix enhances the artistic persuasion when it comes to sewer. NO ONE outside the sewing community at large is going to believe that calling yourself a "sewist" makes you inherently better at the task...only that you are poor at grammar.
@@joannathesinger770 I don’t think it enhances my craft but I believe I can call myself anything I want. English is changing all the time and sewist is becoming a generally accepted term for someone who sews. There are plenty of words we use today that in the past have been considered “not etymologically correct” but if people use it than it is correct. That’s what is so cool about language. The users of the languages can and often do change the rules.
@@Samanthasnow Yep...that's the feedback I get when logic fails...English is changing so I can darn well call myself what I want. It's NOT changing THAT fast. Why not use accepted grammar and etymology (and the logic behind it that has worked for literally over 800 years) and not try to buck the system? There are MANY other acceptable terms you could use...fiber artist among them...that could suffice AND show additional creativity...which, at the end of the day is the ultimate goal. If you want to persist with "sewist" and be laughed at...it's your "hill"...
AND...since you claim "plenty of words" we use today that aren't etymologically correct...name one. I'll be here waiting...
