  • I haven't been to The Hobby Centre model train store in a while and I've had several people tell me that there were new items that may be of interest. As it turned out they had a variety of new stock and I was able to pick up more tin plate pieces of rolling stock and a locomotive I've been looking at for a while.

    The SFRD reporting marks are Santa Fe RefrigerateD, a subsidiary of the parent Aitchison Topeka & Santa Fe. This way it could be operated loaded without the hassle of having to be returned empty or loaded returning it to Santa Fe as a return load.

    The cars with non-opening doors are plug-door cars, most reefers had plug doors. On the prototype they have an air-tight seal, and when they're opened the doors pop out before sliding to the side. This would probably be hard to duplicate in HO, I don't think I've ever seen an operating model of a plug door car.

    Your hobble shop videos are the best, you show stuff that is often overlooked and consider 'cheap' and most of the time that kind of stuff is the most interesting.

    I think the 0-4-0 would look awesome on the mountain layout. Slowly pulling log cars as it creeps through the mountains!

    Older refrigerator cars have hinged doors, once in a while you would find that some manufacturers actually have them operable/openable. Also note that one of those cars has "one-each" coupler so that you can run both types of train cars without having to swap couplers! Cute little switcher... nice job... and it's a hybrid that runs on two fuels. John

I Love that Little 0-4-0 steamer you got thats Awesome . them tin cars I havent seen myself maybe i didnt look but i gotta say i agree about the packaging of years ago was great the fact is they were more into advertising the product now they don't even do that heck is there any advertising for train stuff anymore unfortunately we won't see it anymore since Tyco. Very interesting old school couplers on them tin cars nice prices heck I'd love to go there. These places that have reasonable prices are what I like to see. Great find there. The last car is Santafe Refrigeration Division I believe is how they abbreviated the word

    Chooch kits were popular back in the 70's.
    I used to manage a train store in Redondo Beach, Ca many years ago. South Bay Model Railroad Supply. We were only a few miles frim Arhern and Model Die Casting. I used to drive over to Carson to meet up with Irv Athern himself. At MDC I would pick-up incomplete or factory seconds to sell in the shop, which led to them producing packs of misc. parts as "kitbashing" packs.
    Your videos are great, but you need to do a little studying about your hobby. Look for an old copy of The Diesel Spotters Guide vol 1 and 2 from Kalmbach Publishing. It will help you a lot. Keep up the good work, kid.

    Nice haul SMT. Wrapping used model trains must be a Canadian thing cause I’m the states all the hobby stores I’ve been to just have used items stacked or just thrown in bins. Does your Swedish 2-8-0 have a DCC decoder in it, and if so, did it come factory installed or did you install it? If you did install a decoder, what brand did you use? I have a 2-8-2 with a relatively small tender that I need a decoder for.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't currently have a decoder. I have plans to eventually get it a sound equipped decoder. In your case the brand shouldn't matter too much although buying a quality decoder usually pays off since they last longer.
