Buying Shady Model Trains on Etsy - Episode 2 - An Unusual Haul

  • A couple months ago I made a video (Buying shady model trains on Etsy) where I bought an unusual locomotive off a website I had never used before. I thought it would be fun to do another search for some unusual stuff and I ended up finding several items including a vintage German Fleischmann train and a CN Dash 9 which turned out to be a dummy loco.

    Two nice purchases. The little German train is quite nice. With all-metal box cars! After a little SMT maintenance magic that little loco will be racing around the layout with its train in tow! Always fun videos. Thanks.

    I believe most Fleischmann locos are diecast, and two words of warning: The flanges on these older European made models are way big for the scale, designed to take really tight corners as European layouts are much smaller usually, and may catch on code 83/turnouts(learned from experience), also be careful with the gears as older Fleischmann units have exposed gears and will pick up any debris

    • @al7857

      They are all from Fleischmann but the wagons are not made out of diecast there are metall weights inside of it

    That small locomotive is an early 60's Fleischmann, identifiable by the notch on the couplers and the brown bakelite wheels.
    For repair instructions, the catalog number is 1325 for your variant, but these are the same as a 1320. Take caution, there is usually a large rf supression coil inside these that is covered with lacquer which disintegrates when touched.
    The wagons and locomotive are probably from the same set, bought in Europe (these were also sold in the US with NMRA couplers)
    Be sure to store the wheels somewhere safe if you plan to replace them, as they increase the value for collectors.

  • @modelrailpreservation

    Fleishmann made stuff for the US in the 1950s, I think into the 1960s. Your tank engine is a German design, I think a BR80 type. Fleishmann removed buffers and installed different couplers for the US market. They also made Santa Fe Hi-Level cars and an ALCO FA diesel, which even had wire mesh grills on the sides, a very nice and unusal feature for the era. I once found a Fleishmann industrial switcher at an antique mall for five bucks. Well, they called it an industrial switcher for the US market, but it is really a German light yard switcher, one built by Orenstein and Koppel in real life, the model even has the O&K logo molded on. Four wheel loco, only two wheels powered. As I also have a European layout where I can run my German and British stuff, it was a great find for me. Flesihmann also made a four wheel Bobber caboose that is very similar in appearance to the Mantua/Tyco ones. Cleaned up the Fleishmann stuff can be respectable runners.

    Here's a good tip on buying Athearn engines to see if it is powered or a dummy. The wheels are usually a dead give away on powered versus dummy. Powered engines normally have metal wheels and the dummies normally use plastic wheels. Another trick when viewing the bottom side of Athearn locos in photos will be the holes for the motor mounts. If they are plugged, the unit should be powered with a motor. Of course, the holes for the motor mounts will be empty on a dummy. Also, on occasions and certain units, the flywheels can be seen which indicate a powered unit.

    That Fleischmann locomotive you found is a DRG Class 80 it was basically the standard locomotive for European/German starter sets for like most of the 20th century and it's really only recently that manufacturers have started moving away from it and using different locomotives and you can still get some starter sets with it. The one you have is almost definitely from one such starter set from probably a couple of decades ago (Fleischmann almost only make N scale now) and it's super common to find it used on listings in Europe. Roco makes a modern version of that locomotive for 90 Euro and Piko makes what looks like an 0-4-0 version of it that I can't figure out what the prototype for is for basically the same price of what you brought yours for.

    Fleishman is good stuff when you can find it that hasn't been bashed to heck, but it's really common to see them with busted trucks, seems like they tend to get some rougher treatment because folks assume they can take it just because they're mostly metal, the motors are usually similar to old Tyco motors but a fair touch more reliable in my personal experience

    1:24 Im sure that is a model power loco, recently started looking for these locos. They've made a few of the "Bullet train" locomotives in Amtrak, Santa Fe, Coke (As seen) and I think they've also done an accurate Shinkansen Livery as well (I've seen it made by Playart) Also I did come across one recently on Ebay (Amtrak) as a set, but it was sold under the GATA name, which is odd. (Not to mention its battery powered) Ended up buying it cause it was odd. Also pretty cool you got the dummy loco refunded.

    That Black steam loco looks Like a older Fleichmann BR80 engine and the rest of the cars are also made by Fleichmann.
    It sounds like that engine needs to have its gears cleaned, its quite common with older fleichmann engines to find a whole lot of gunk behind the gears and in the gears. Be care full with taking it apart since sometimes you could damage the gears in between the individual driving wheels. If you need spare parts for it, its probably quite easy to find since fleichmann locos have standardized parts between locos, but be aware that its common the motor shield has quite some variation in it even withing the same model.

      @strike9716 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bachman and athearn sets both use bachman EZtrack, as will most of your nicer sets. Life-like uses powerlock track which is different and non-compatible with bachman. Model power and other weird brands usually have their own system. YMMV on compatibility. As for the trains themselves, pretty much anything new comes with knuckle couplers these days so you should be fine there. Old athearns that use the old horn-hook style couplers can be converted to knuckles easily enough. But with old bachman and life-like and most other brands with truck mounted couplers you're stuck with horn-hooks unless you make major modifications.
