Scrappy is one thing, but the color combo is what truly makes this quilt work! Definitely something to keep in mind in my future! Colors don't need to match, but they do need to harmonize to create your wonderful effect! Thank you!!! 🤗
I enjoyed watching you do that jelly roll strip quilt!! I never done one but I will now because it goes together so quickly!! Thanks so much for sharing your sewing with us ❤
After seeing at least 4 videos of different quilter's versions of this 2.5" strip quilt, I decided to go for it on my own. I only had leftover strips from other projects and a lot of strips. So for my first quilt, I pulled out all the strips that had pink in them. I didn't want clumps of the same colors in the quilt, so I divided them by dark, medium, and light colors. I then sewed them together after joining them all with straight seams instead of diagonal. It turned out to be a nice large lap quilt. I still had a huge bunch of strips left. I divided them into dark, medium and light as well. I also cut the 40"+ strips into half to have more variety within the quilt especially since these weren't curated into a jelly roll. I ended up with two tops that are at least 6' long - I had my husband or son hold them up so I could photograph them. As they were both 6'2" tall and the top covered them from floor to top of their heads I knew they would be big enough for them. At this point I was pretty much done with most of my 2.5" strips except for some that would have taken over the quilt top as there was so much of them. I have not put on a border or quilted them yet. But it was fun and relaxing to just sew without having to think much about it. Then I opened up my 2" strips and sorted them from whole width of fabric from partial strips. I am cutting the whole strips in half and keeping the other strips at 20" so I will have a good mix of the colors and strip sizes. By my mental calculations, I think I will get at least two tops from them. I want to give these quilts to my sons, DIL, Hubby as well as me for Christmas presents. I have chronic health problems and I think this is probably the last chance for me to do a mass sewing project like this. I am having fun as well as thinking up ways to make this easier, use up fabric so I can get into my new fabric that has been waiting a long time to see the light of day. I love making scrap quilts but I have never felt that just because a quilt is a scrap quilt that it should be just a hodge podge of fabric. I like to see if I can make it look as if I had thought about fabric placement. This is such an interesting project with different ways to make it. Each top I made, I changed what I was doing a bit. Thanks for the video.
Wow. I didn't think I was going to like the quilt with that fabric but it turned out beautifully. That black border really set it off. I love it. Perfect fall quilt.
Great work....i love that you back stitch every 12 inches or so on the binding, so if the thread ever breaks....great idea and i will definitely will do this on my next binding....And the spool idea....thanks for sharing with us.
I wish my bucket count was down by 1. Working my way through the bags of strings. Thanks for the very clear tutorial. My flannels are going to get cut up next.
P.S. the black border and binding IS PERFECT! Wow. I have a quilt in progress similar to this quilt; now I know how to finish it off. Beautiful Quilt 😍
Very impressive the way you had your strips on the spool and positioned under your sewing machine table. Very impressive for sure. Your quilt ended very nice. Thanks for sharing.👍❤️😊
Thank you Shelley for another great scrappy quilt pattern. I am loving this series. Thanks to your inspiration, my bucket is also less. Looking forward to next month's pattern. I am also sewing your basket BOM 10 inch size. Keep up the good work!
I LOVE this series!! I decided last year that I would cut all of my left over fabric into 2 1/2 in strips instead of having a bunch of different sizes. This series is going to help me soooo much!! 👏🏻👏🏻
So I have my scraps away for an Aunt who loves to quilt just this week!🥹😭 but loved to bless her ❤so guess I’m going to buy that jelly roll on sale right now and have some fun. Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos! It was so relaxing to watch you sew. I will admit I was a little doubtful about your finished quilt in the middle of the process, but the black fabric and piano key border really elevated the pattern and the final quilt looks very nice! So many great tips and versatility for using up 2.5" strips. Thank you!
I love both versions. OMG! Using up 1/2 used bobbins is a great idea and the giant spool to rolling the strips on, fantastic. I noticed you use enders and leaders, too. The black band and binding was a Great touch. I’ll be definitely checking out your previous quilts and waiting for the next ones. Thanks! I have fabric that was gifted me that I’ve never know what to do with. Now, I have and idea. I’m excited.
I think it is really fantastic, using up your strips like that is so economical and you dont really have a picture in your mind how its going to look until its finished, which makes it a surprise in a way. Thanks for showing us, I appreciated it !!
I love how to make it so easy to use up stripes! I really couldn’t decide what to do with all of mine. Now I am ready to reduce my piles and have fun! Thank you 😊
20:37 -- Back stitching when you move your right hand is a brilliant way to further secure the binding as the quilt ages and the stitches get more wear. 🎉
I am so glad to see that you pressed after the first run. It is SO important to press at that point, and so many people do not do it. If you press the double strip at this point, you will already have HALF of your pressing done for the quilt top! It is MUCH more difficult if you wait to press all those seams until you have stitched everything. (I actually press between every run, but I realize that is way too much for some people. LOL)
Can’t deal with wrinkled chaos! I could never store fabrics in this manner… I do love how you rolled your pressed strips.. I would have started the roll with a few and gradually added all along the way…
Genius! I had never before wanted to make a jellyroll quilt -- partly because I never buy jellyrolls -- but mostly because I was sure that things would get horribly tangled. But this is an amazing way to avoid this problem. You also had other good tips and tricks. So now I definitely see a quilt like this in my future.
I have done many jelly roll race quilts and everyone always loves them. I think the trick is to stick to a colorway and also alternate value in some ratio. For example, I will do 1:3 low to high volume or the reverse. Often the commercially sold jelly rolls do not do this justice and I actually think when you make your own from your scraps or something that you assemble it turns out stunning. Sewing these is so very therapeutic, as is cutting them. You can do the math to figure out how many strips you need and modify as necessary.
Thank you for this video. I had a friend who was telling me about this method, but without the visual aid, it was still unclear. Your video makes it easier to understand. 😊
You have given us so many great tips in this video 😃 By using up some of your scraps you have created some wonderful quilts that look warm and snuggly 😊 Thanks for sharing 👏👏🇬🇧
Great tip on the binding. I love the black strips on the sides and piano key borders. Adds a lot of interest to an otherwise kinda boring quilt! Def gonna add those to my next one.
I did this with a jelly roll of batik. After the first strip was made, I would pair them again, but start one from the top and the other from the bottom. This decreases the chance of making large rectangles of all the same fabric. Spreading the scrappyness around.😊
Ok, I’m doing it! Sewed the blues together and I’m on my way! It made me so happy to finally be using up so many scraps! I noticed so many were from making grand baby quilts! Happy memories, for sure! Thanks again!
I have made the jelly roll race quilt with a jelly roll strip. I enjoyed it. I love the idea of doing this with scraps, but not sure I would have enough 2.5 inch strips to make one. Maybe some day...
I’ve made two jelly roll race quilts and both times it was a gong show trying to keep the fabric untangled. Your method is so ingenuous! Now to just find a big spool so I can try your method….
The spool hanging idea was nothing short of brilliant
Scrappy is one thing, but the color combo is what truly makes this quilt work! Definitely something to keep in mind in my future! Colors don't need to match, but they do need to harmonize to create your wonderful effect! Thank you!!! 🤗
The consummate ironer in me wanted to press your crinkled strips the whole time lol.
🤣
I enjoyed watching you do that jelly roll strip quilt!! I never done one but I will now because it goes together so quickly!! Thanks so much for sharing your sewing with us ❤
Agree!
And I wanted to cut off all those threads.
Same here!! How does a block come out straight if not ironed first?
I've seen this pattern done a few times before, but I've got a cold and I'm just enjoying watching you sew while I'm curled up in bed with tea.
The dowel idea is brilliant!
Ok. I picked up no less than 3 great tips from this video … and I’ve been quilting a while! Thank you!

Good for you!

I love everything about this! Best scrappy "jelly roll" piecing method EVER!
Wow, thank you!
That blade saver is magic
Wow. I didn't think I was going to like the quilt with that fabric but it turned out beautifully. That black border really set it off. I love it. Perfect fall quilt.
That is beautiful! As a new quilter, I have that pattern to look forward to, lol!
I'm definitely not a neutrals/browns person, but surely appreciate them once in a project!
Great work....i love that you back stitch every 12 inches or so on the binding, so if the thread ever breaks....great idea and i will definitely will do this on my next binding....And the spool idea....thanks for sharing with us.
I will, too!
same!
This series is amazing! I can’t wait to do each one of them!
You gave a wonderful tutorial... and i am very happy to learn how to make use of the empty spool! Thank you and God bless
I wish my bucket count was down by 1. Working my way through the bags of strings. Thanks for the very clear tutorial. My flannels are going to get cut up next.

I love those colors, and the organic look of the homemade jelly roll with its different length original strips! It turned out so beautifully!
Rolling on the spool was very smart!!👍
Very impressive the way you had your strips on the spool and positioned under your sewing machine table. Very impressive for sure. Your quilt ended very nice. Thanks for sharing.👍❤️😊

Great tutorial, thank you! I now know what to do with all my flannel scraps! Love all your suggestions and tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Definitely not boring. I have been cutting out 2-1/2 inch strips from my scraps. Can wait to get going on mine.
I really love that serie for leftover strips. Looking forward for the next as I completed this one yesterday.
Love the scrappy look. Especially like the idea of using up partial bobbins. Thanks!!
Love these ideas! The bobbin trick is genius; I never think of these things on my own!
That’s exactly what I thought-amazingly clever problem solving and a solution I never would have come up with! WELL DONE!!!
Thank you for sharing your talent of simple scrap quit sewing. Love it😊

🌟 This certainly is a wonderful idea! Thanks a million for sharing this wonderful video!🌟
Not generally my colors of choice....but oh does that look gorgeous... thank you for the video!
the spool idea was brilliant, I love doing jelly roll quilts and I love the black spacer you put on the sides, it really made the quilt.
Love the spool idea!! Turned out really pretty!!

Great idea to make your own rolls from scraps.
That came out so so beautiful absolutely amazing❤❤❤❤😊
This is a great idea! I will try this with strips that my friend gave me. I love using my scraps.
I’m definitely going to do this. Mindless sewing. Sometimes I just want to sew with no project in mind.
Such a zenlike process!!love it
Love both quilts and the jewel tone colors
I am totally LOVING this strip scrap series!!! Yes, I WILL be using my strips to make quite a few of these Quilts. Many Thanks for your Tutorials ❤
Great tip on the binding. I love the black strips on the sides and piano key borders. Adds a lot of interest to an otherwise kinda boring quilt! Def gonna add those to my next one.

I have a huge amount of 2.5 inch strips. Am excited to see all of your patterns.
I agree that the black strips on the side not only make the quilt wider, but more interesting too ❤😮😊!!!
Love the spool idea!
Truly amazing how much of your stash you were able to use. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much!
I enjoyed watching this with my 9 year old granddaughter.
This is my favorite quilt so far in the series!
Hello Donna and Fran cute new patterns to sew up fast new quilts. I like them all, looking forward to seeing your next video.
Spool idea is great! Thank you for sharing it with us.
I have made the jelly roll race quilt with a jelly roll strip. I enjoyed it. I love the idea of doing this with scraps, but not sure I would have enough 2.5 inch strips to make one. Maybe some day...
Totally enjoying this series even though I am not a seasoned quilter!
I really enjoyed this video. I had to have eye surgery, so now things can get back to normal with my sewing. This was very inspiring. Thank you. 😊
I really like the fall colors in the quilt. Great job.
