Oil pulling helps me. Although I don't see it as just mouth cleaning. It's a no carb snack because I swallow. Anti inflammatory and replaces gum. I also use salted water. That's oral care but also helps cramping.

For me brushing my teeth is a much bigger problem than my weight. I clicked on this video out of curiosity I don't really want to loose weight. That being sad - how do you guys brush your teeth every single day?! The sensation is disgusting, the taste that you have in your mouth afterwards is disgusting, sometimes my teeth downright hurt after toothpaste (I have very sensitive teeth). If I brush them two times a day I cannot eat at all (teeth hurt after any contact with any food). I HATE to brush my teeth. I just hate it.

The five habits that Carla discusses:
    1) Let go of perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking (work towards self-compassion and -kindness)
    2) Don't feel pressure to clean your plate (learn to use internal fullness and satisfaction cues)
    3) When you're eating, eat the best foods first! (Don't save your favorites for last.)
    4) Let go of the fear of not being satisfied by a meal (you can always eat later if you're still hungry)
    5) Stop automatically accepting dessert (question your habits and assumptions)
Thanks for another helpful video, Carla 🖤🖤

The other day my husband and I were cleaning up our basement because water leaked into it. It was a hard day of physical labor. He wanted custard type ice cream from a local restaurant. He did more physical work than I, so he had me go get them. He wanted a two scoop sundae. I talked to myself the whole way. I would be fine not getting any dessert, but if I see him eating the sundae, I would have FOMO. I ordered myself a small and him the large. Tomorrow is another day, but I call it a win for that day.

  • @CheriJ11

A trick I started to use that helped me was when eating at a restaurant and getting a large portion, I would plan to take half of it (or a third of it) home for the next day (depending on the portion size). If I was full but tempted to keep eating, I’d remind myself that tomorrow I’d be sorry I didn’t have as much to eat. Stealing from myself wasn’t very satisfying and it would encourage me to stop eating so I could have the same portion size tomorrow with my leftovers.

That’s an important point. Weight gain and limited physical activity doesn’t happen overnight so the weight shouldn’t come off quickly either.
When people tell me that they’ve lost 20-30 pounds in an short amount of time while I’m only losing a pound a week, it’s important to remind myself that it isn’t a race and the changes need to be permanent.

I have lost 210 lbs. Took almost 6 years (2020-2021 was a pause while I dealt with stage 3 cancer). Do I still have cravings? Yes. Do I still eat more some days and less other days? Yes. Can I do different types of exercises? No. My physical limitations mean I just walk. Do I force myself to get all of my walking in at one time? Heck, no. Other things happen, and I split my time during the day. I don't beat myself up.

When I was giving up sugar and cigarettes and I felt the urge for one of these I'd say to myself (aloud) "I'll have it later, not now. Wait a bit longer."Then I'd get busy doing anything to distract my attention from the craving and in time the craving passed. I'd do this every time, acknowledge the desire and recognise the need but take control by not giving in. I could go hours or a whole day using this way of thinking.

Perfectionism was a killer for me when I was younger. Now I aim for progress because I was able to let go of so much of the perfectionist mindset. Now I have a 22 year old daughter who is working through the same issues. She has always struggled with perfectionism and it’s killing her spirit. It started in Kindergarten. Her K teacher recognized it right away and we have been working on it since then.

I think the "all or nothing" perfectionist approach is the downfall of a lot of us, and biting off more than we can chew both literally and with our goals. I've set a goal for just 5 minutes of mindful movement a day and doing yoga or dance 5 days a week, which also covers the 5 mins of mindful movement a day. Most days I go way beyond 5 minutes, but on the days where I just can't sum up the will to move I can usually force out 5 minutes of yoga or a walk around a block or two with the dog.

ive screwed myself up on that for sure. like, i do an all-in approach on fitness/weightloss but then stack up too many things to do or juggle. i lose hold or i burn out. it's better to start with one or two things, get that into a habit, and build from there. that way it's not *everything all at once.*

I really identify with the “clean your plate” problem. I grew up with parents who insisted we clean our plates, “their are children starving in ...”. My husband on the other hand was taught it is “proper to leave food on his plate” because if not it looks like you are just hungry and will eat anything instead of enjoying what was prepared for you.
( in public setting he always leaves something but at home he cleans his plate)
I have switched to smaller plates and bowl to help with portion control and alway think if I am still hungry I can get second but never need to.

For me, the biggest problem is not noticing what I DRINK, that is causing major weight gain. Lattes from Starbucks, beer, martinis, mochas.....I sometimes have 2 lattes, a mocha and two beers in a day.....which adds up to over 1500 calories.....JUST IN YUMMY LIQUID.....and I don't even notice I am taking it in as there is no chewing involved.☹️ Ugh. Also, all of that dehydrates me, which makes me more thirsty for more yummies....and depletes vitamin B, which makes me tired , so I seek caffeine. What a circular problem.....that has turned me into a circle!!🤣😂

Last year I weighed in at 313, I believe I weighed more but for a month before this weigh in I stopped drinking regular soda and as much sweets. I'm now 253. I haven't been this small for 2 decades. I'm still learning and I LOVE this video. I need more of the mindset changes that are needed to be and stay successful. I've been lucky to not have to do too much and lost their first 60lbs. BUT I have a min of 73 more to go before I'm at the max BMI for health. I'm not terribly stressed about he weight however I know when I'm not losing for a long time it is a sign I need to do something different. I also an no longer diabetic so it's important for me to stay well not just lose weight. I'm about to be 46 so my life priorities are different and sure I want to look good but feel good, be able to move and live well is my main concern and reason. I'm hoping you speak more on the mental and emotional and thankful to have this one video to assist as I learn to fight my eqting addiction. Be well

Another thing that’s helped me with not overeating is I’ll make up my plate and then I’ll put the rest into separate portion sized Tupperware containers. Then I’ll look at the serving I gave myself and take a little bit more off and put it in the containers. If I’m still hungry after I eat, I can go get more but it’s not already on my plate tempting me to just eat it. I live alone so I’m often cooking enough for 4 meals or so at a time. Then my lunches are ready to take to work for the next few days too.

🖤🖤🖤I'm at 320 myself right now and can use all the helpful tips I can get. Thank you for this. I started walking about a month ago and on days I can't do it, it's easy to let it slide the days after because of "perfectionism"... but I have to remember that ANY walking is better than the total absence of exercise before I started. So if I only make it three or four days a week, that's still a huge improvement. The clearing of the plate makes a lot of sense to me too, as that's how I was brought up. Time to stop eating when I'm satisfied.

Secondly, stand up half way through eating, walk to the bathroom or just stand around, you may be more full than you think but can't tell because you are seated. Good luck!

    1) Don't be a perfectionist.
    2) You don't have to eat EVERYTHING on your plate!
    3) Eat what you're looking forward to the most FIRST.
    4) Understand that your eyes are often bigger than your stomach and try putting less on your plate to begin with. If its not enough you can always get more!
    5) Stop automatically saying "yes" to certain foods (like deserts or appetizers).
Very good tips! I learned tips one, two and four early in my weightloss journey. I'm going to focus on three and five next. Eighty pounds down - Sixty pounds to go!

What I notice in all these tips is that through them all, you were not depriving yourself, punishing yourself, or being derogatory or critical to yourself.
All your tips were done with compassion, kindness, self awareness and patience with yourself.
I feel like that is the key.
I have heard others use these “tricks” without success. I feel like it’s because they applied them as harsh “rules,” or punishment to their body.
The distinction is important. Like you said, compassion for yourself if it’s not perfect, but shifting and noticing.
Congratulations on finding what works for you! You are inspiring! :)

Thank you so much for your feedback and I completely agree and I should have mentioned that more in this video for those who perhaps have never seen another video of mine. The distinction as you said completely accurately is that everything is done with compassion rather than punishment.

I hadn’t realized that saving what I think will taste the best for last was part of why I was overeating so frequently until you mentioned it. That’s one habit I definitely need to work on. I just put the rest of my lunch in the fridge to have at a different time even though it was the part that seemed like the “best bites” since I am full and don’t want to eat anymore right now. Small steps towards progress

One of the best suggestions I’ve heard is always have salad with food. (Make your own dressing, an olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, little water: shake well.) Eat the salad first. You get nutrients & fiber that is filling and makes it easier NOT to eat everything on your plate. The other suggestion of reserving a portion of dinner for the next meal is a great idea!

    • @KM-gi4xf
      @KM-gi4xf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is also healthier because if you eat the salad or veggies first, then your protein next, and save the carbohydrate portion of your meal for last it is better for less of a glucose spike.

For me what helped was actually learning about my crazy food cravings and the role of glucose spikes in all that. Switching out fast carbs to slow carbs, reducing sugar, eating veggies first, eating fermented vegetables with every meal, and eating smaller portions every 3 hours have dramatically reduced my food cravings. I think a lot of us gain weight because we eat too much processed fast carb. Everything we eat is mostly carbs... Bread, pastry, pasta, potatoes, rice.... and even if we eat veggies it's usually a very small portion and we leave it to the end of the meal. Reducing my glucose levels put me on the right track. Even if I eat something sweet I don't feel like eating the whole bucket of ice cream or the whole chocolate bar in one sitting like I used to.

I don't know whether someone has already commented this, but a habit that made me gain a LOT of weight and lose my discipline, was eating while watching Netflix or TH-cam, etc.
It not only made me eat waaaay more, it also made me want to keep watching tv just to justify eating snacks.
So I didn't just eat more, I also became a lazy couch potato :-)
Now I NEVER eat in front of the tv, and I do NOT distract myself with my phone or anything else during a meal. I am only allowed to focus on my food.
This actually made me look forward to being done with my meal, because it will mean I can do what I want to do. And it gave me soooooo much more free time, time to get things done, time for hobbies, time to work out, etc.
Because I'll be less likely to even WANT to watch tv or scroll through my phone etc.
Anyhow :-) I hope this will help someone with the same problem.
Since I never realised how much impact ONE habit can have.

Love this! I’ve found the dessert part to be tricky too - so I’ve made a conscious effort to ask myself if it’s even a dessert I like! For example - I’d always say yes to the dessert, even when it was a dessert I didn’t even care for (like a dry cupcake vs a luxurious cheesecake)… once I started being okay with saying no to desserts I don’t really care about, it made me feel empowered!

The all or nothing perfectionism mindset resonates with me. When I was on the Weight Watchers at Work program (they came to our workplace for weigh-ins and a meeting once a week), weigh-in day was Monday. If I messed up on Tuesday, I wrote off the rest of the week and started over again on Monday. If I wasn’t perfect one day, I didn’t even try until the next “re-set” day, which to my mind was Monday.

So relatable !!! And especially the using perfectionism as an excuse ! I have lost weight multiple times throughout my life , but failed to maintain it . Because instead of creating a long term , sustainable healthy lifestyle, which I could keep up to . I did those diets and everything extreme and always ended up in those ups and downs . This time finally I get it that I have to keep it up long term . Hence nothing extrem but something that will work long term

I was blessed to be born picky. What I mean by that is that eating for me has been a struggle at least half of my life. I was blessed or cursed to get gastritis, colitis and later on I became gluten intolerant. When I turned around 27, I went up from size 3/5 to almost between 7/9, I decided that was the highest I could be in life. Because my gastritis, I stopped drinking sodas, I have to follow my schedule, and eating around 3pm not later than 4pm my last meal of the day, I can sleep just fine, otherwise, my tummy keeps me awake. I hate chocolate and sweets, don’t like cakes and just looking at cookies, I get thirsty. When I get depressed, I can’t eat at all. It is all about habits, I eat everything I like, but not in excess and before 4pm, only 2 meals, BK and late lunch, my tummy is happy like that. I work out every other day, I run 5 k, it keeps me sane, I am almost 55 and size 4. Change one bad habit at a time, you will get amazing results.

Want to just say that there is no “point of no return” (well, until death, I suppose.) I say that because I have had that “point of no return” thought too - with its underlying panic-but now notice it and recognize it for what it is: distrust of myself, fear of being out of control etc., which are actually things I need to address directly if I’m to be happy in my body, whatever size it is. A work in progress, for sure.

Thank you Carla for the informative video. I mostly related to perfectionism because it spreads to most all areas of my life. As a single woman, I resist cooking healthy meals because I have a bad habit of saying, "It takes too long." Also, I have the bad habit of standing up to eat and rushing my meal. I don't really enjoy the meal, I just want it to be over. I was always throughout my life very thin until my 60's. I was very physically active and I didn't have to watch my foods. But, when I was in my mid 60's I said to myself one day, "I don't care about my weight anymore." And, it's been downhill from then. The truth is "I DO CARE" but I got lazy. I'm ready to start loving my body again. Thanks for all of the good tips!

ironically, my mom both taught the clean plate club ( i think from her parents ) but also did the boxing half a meal at restaurants through quite a few years of my life. (she was perpetually on a weightloss journey. now, due to stupid lithium and some other factors, i blew up and have like 45 lbs to lose. previous to this, my whole life i maintained 5-10lbs over at most, with the exception of 15 a couple times. it's damn daunting. there's a REASON i always weighed myself a lot and had a chokehold on it. one, didn't want to end up like my mom or brother, but two, i was afraid of hitting a weight that felt too hard to lose. frequent weigh-ins is what i think helped most with maintenance.

Thank you Carla! I texted this to my friend with your link! My summary!! 🌸🌸💞
    Carla shared 🛑:
    1) stopped being a perfectionist (so before she’d be like “oh I wanted to walk an hour and I only have 30 min today, forget it - I’m gonna eat a cake” 🎂😂😂🤣🚫
    2) stopped making herself eat everything on the plate… then she learned to take smaller portions eventually! Eat only until satiated… then STOP 🛑
    3) stopped leaving the best part of her meal last. (She used to eat veggies first then steak… then she savored the steak first and that did something for her)
    4) stopped saying her old automatic narrative “oh that’s not enough to fill me” (when she was limiting calories for some meals, it was her old addictive to food for her traumas brain that kept automatically insisting it wouldn’t be enough…) she’s so compassionate w herself in all of this too though!
    And
    5) she stopped automatically just saying ‘yes’ to dessert 🍰or to eating all the calories she had left on her diet if she had some left but was full already…
Ok! Much love!! It’s fun to hear HER say it all though! 💕💕

I relate so much on perfectionism preventing me from doing things. Used to be if I wasn’t eating perfectly exactly how I wanted or following my planned routine to the T, I would just consider it ruined and not do it all. I have found implementing better sleep has helped me across the board. I learned years ago that when I get up early my days go way better. But I struggled with going to bed at a reasonable time. So I’ve made the going to bed part and building bedtime routines a priority. I try to walk every morning but on days that I’m in a rush or have less time, I also tell myself it’s okay to literally do 1 minute on the treadmill, the goal is just to keep the habit in my routine. On days like today I’ll stay on the treadmill for an hour plus just watching TH-cam or playing on my phone which I used to do every day regardless, just usually sitting in a chair or in bed.

Oh my gosh, Lorraine! What are you doing inside my head! Our brains are identical on this front. I'm finding my phone to be a HUGE deterrent to getting to bed early enough. I am a good sleeper once I get there, but need more of it. I find that if I get at least 7:35 of sleep, I feel more alive & clear-headed, I lose a "little" weight, and my ADHD interferes less with my life. Imagine if I could get myself to bed early EVERY night!!! I'm involved in a work challenge & have set "in bed by 10:30" as my goal 5x/wk. I've been successful for 2 wks now. I get up at 5:AM, though, so it's still not enough. I think I'll bump it to 10:00 for a week, then 9:30.... it makes THAT much of a difference when I do it. So, in addition to Carla's fantastic 5, I would add a min. of 7.5 hrs sleep as tip 6. I saw somewhere that the human clock runs most efficiently if we sleep from 10PM-6AM. It makes zero sense to me that we could all be the same, but I have a feeling it would be ideal for me.

🖤🖤 thank you for sharing your story! I just found your channel. I lost 120 lbs about 6 years ago and ended up gaining it back due to emotional eating. I am trying to step into the journey again and I am inspired by your videos so far. Thank you for the inspiration!

Helpful tip is the one about not looking at calorie limit as a target but more of a guide. Thank you.
