Hi Everyone! With cold and flu season just around the corner, I love to make homemade Elderberry Syrup and tuck it away in my fridge. How about you? Love, Mary
RECIPE & TIMESTAMPS 2:15 (2 cups of dried elderberry) 2:28 (1 cup of hibiscus flowers) 3:00 (1 cup of rose hips, crushed) 3:40 (8 cups of water) 4:30 (optional ingredients for immune boost: Echinacea root, Astragalus root) Simmer for 1 hour (reduced to half) 8:30 (strain) 9:30 (spent solids good for tea) 12:00 (spent solids into ice tray) 12:45 (1 cup of honey added to the 4 cups of syrup) SIMPLIFIED RECIPE IN PARTS 2 parts dried elderberry 1 part hibiscus flower 1 part rose hips 8 parts water Simmer, reduce to half, let cool until warm (not hot) 1 part raw honey
More honey is needed if you want it to last a long time in the refrigerator. I keep mine for up to a year. I actually do half decoction and half raw honey. Yes it is sweet, but we only take about a TBSP and it is also great to add to tea.
I just love your channel! I should of been born in the 1800's.😊 I dehydrate the leftover mixture and powder it for nutriblasts or smoothies. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
I just made this syrup, and it came out spectacularly! So tasty! I'm giving it to friends and family as a stocking stuffer for the holidays. I added an extra step of soaking the herbs in the water for 30 min before simmering on the stove. Thank you for the wonderful information on this channel, watching you is a delight 😊 💗
I've been making elderberry syrup for a few months now but followed online recipes that call for much less berriers 3/4 cup dried berriers. I bought Gladstars book yesterday and as your video recipe uses 2 cups she uses the same. I will use more next batch
Just found your channel and sub’d. Long story short, being diagnosed with ms, I found out how much big pharma is profiting from us being sick. I’ve slowly started to try a more holistic approach. Even my kids will ask for natural remedies over synthetic. Exploring your channel and hoping to learn more. Thank you, for sharing your knowledge. 😊
You brought a smile to my face because it reminded me of "Anne of Green Gables" when Anne gave her friend Diana Barry some of Marilla's elderberry tonic. Diana drank too much at got drunk! :) Thank you so much for all of your life lessons.
It definitely is, what you may also add is olive leaves too as they are quite antiviral, its so nice to see people returning to natural remedies so much better than drugs
I so love that you don't waste anything and give these really cool suggestions on how to use the "discards" It bothers me so much when I watch other people and they throw so much away I have to leave their chanel. I was raised not to waste and I use everything as well, and your ideas give me new ways to use them
Oh Grace! Thank you again for such loving and kind words. You and I are true traditional food soul mates! I am so happy to know you! Yes, I can't waste anything. You will laugh when I tell you this - but years ago, when Food Network started, I saw the Rachel Ray show for the first time. She put a bowl on her counter and called it her "garbage bowl". I couldn't handle it and started talking to the TV saying..."you could make a whole meal out of that "garbage"!! LOL!! My parents both lived through the US Depression of the 1930s. They never wasted ANYTHING!! And raised me to do the same. I always joke that they were "Green" before it was trendy! LOL!! I don't even throw out tin cans if I have them. I save them and use them on fruit trees. The shine keeps the birds away from eating the fruit! Have you seen my "Cooking with Scraps" playlist? I think you will enjoy it: th-cam.com/play/PLkRuW3pBo2U0Uc9r7s9UcgkrnRXAM9riz.html Once again, I am SO glad you're here!! Love, Mary
Hi Mary, I made your Elderberry Syrup and also the ice cubes. I never attempted something like this and I have to say it is absolutely delicious! The flavor is fantastic and I’ve been using the ice cubes for tea, adding just a 1/2 tsp of honey, it is wonderful. I shared the syrup and ice cubes with my family and they are very happy with it. One of my sons brought back the empty jar for a refill! I will be making another batch shortly and wanted to let you know how much we all enjoyed this recipe. Thank you for sharing it!

Hi Mary, I’m so glad you said to not throw out the cooked pulp. I freeze dried the pulp, then powdered it, then put it inside tea bags. It makes amazing tea!
What a great idea to use strained elderberry, Hibiscus Flowers and rose hip to have tea instead of throwing it out. Also great idea to put it in ice cube trays to just pop out when you want tea. Love that. Thanks for sharing. I am definitely going to do this.

@Becky Cory do you hot water bath when you can your elderberry and for how long? Also, how much honey to sweeten before using? I just got some dried elderberries from Amazon this morning. Can’t wait to get started.
Hello Mary, I am so interested in this recipe and I bet your home smells just wonderful. I also love the colour of your Texas honey 🍯 how amazingly dark 💕
Thanks for such an informative video. How do you store the mixture after preparing it? I wasn't sure if it needs to be refrigerated or not. Also, what's the shelf life of the syrup after making?
Thanks for this recipe. Much easier than the way I was making elderberry Infused honey. It's different but achieves the same goal with less Hassel and waste.
You are absolutely precious! Lovely beautiful spirit I love listening to you teach! Thank you for this elderberry video. I got more from seeing you in this video than any other video and am inspired to try this myself, as I am spending $$$ on purchasing homemade elderberry from another local lady. Not to say I don’t love her syrup,I do! But I’d love to have the pride that comes with making my own. Thank you again God bless you 🙏🏼
MalibuWhit - Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m so glad that you’re here. You can definitely do this… It is very easy and when you buy the elderberries and/or other herbs it becomes much more affordable to make it yourself. Good luck with it and keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions. Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
I've been making elderberry syrup since this spring... really LOVE your recipe with the addition of rosehips and hibiscus! since I use it daily in my Chaga tea for immune building/maintenance I just KNOW this will be even more delicious! just need to source the additional ingredients and I'll be making this! thanks so much Mary ... really enjoying your informative channel!

Great idea using the ice cubes! Also, using rosehips and hibiscus which I have on hand. Thank you for your recipe. Do you ever add ginger and cinnamon to your mixture?
Thats a great idea to add hibiscus and rosehips but I would add them to the last 5 or 10 minutes to the boiling elderberries otherwise, I would be reducing thei vitamin C and antioxidant properties significantly. Thanks for the recipe! I will be trying it with that slight variation.
Hi Mary. I don't know if I'll ever get caught up on all your wonderful videos. Oh gee I just looked this is 4 years old. I'm obviously not going in order, but different day , different interest that particular day. Thank you so much.
Hi Mary, have you ever considered using whole cloves. Cloves have antibacterial and antiparasitical properties. I make a drink for my husband made of 3 litres of spring water, 1 cup of chopped ginger, 10 cloves, 5 allspice berries, 1 cup chopped pineapple including the core. I pressure cook for 40 minutes, strain it out while hot and add 2 cups of hibiscus (sorrel) plus raw honey and let steep 30 or more minutes, strain again and sweeten with sugar free blue raspberry water enhancer, then bottle it up.

Thank you Mary for doing this video. I'm glad you show me to use my ice cubes to placed the elderberry left over to use for another day in my tea. I didn't want to throw away the leftover leaves I knew we cn used it for something else's .
Hi Jamie, Thank you SO much!! Yes, I was raised by two parents who lived during the Depression of the 1930s. I was taught to never waste anything!! Love, Mary
WOW....I AM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU. I HAVE SOME DRIED ELDERBERRIES AND THOUGHT WHAT DO I DO ? YOU MAKE WORKING IN THE KITCHEN EASY AND FUN. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. WHAT YOU DO MATTERS AND IS HELPING MANY. HERE IS TO YOU, MARY. TAKE A BOW. SEPT 2 2021
Omg! I made a batch!! :D so excited. Lol unfortunately I got a summer cold already but this hopefully will help!! Haha also PSA crush rose hips in a bag. I used my mortar and pestle and rosehips have tiny hairs inside. They get on your clothing and then prickle you like an itchy sweater. Another solution could be wear an apron. 😂😅 saving the berry leftovers for my tea party!!

Thank you for making this video! I really enjoyed it and have been wondering how to make elderberry syrup. I didn’t read all of the other comments, but just a thought in case it wasn’t already mentioned …We use frozen strawberries, oranges, and lemons in lieu of ice cubes when we make a large pitcher of lemonade. I think elderberry syrup ice cubes would be amazing in lemonade!
Mary, you are a joy to watch!! I love your cheerfulness and I'm a big fan of natural remedies and healthy eating and supplements etc. I've got lots to learn from you not only about what you do, but how you make your videos! Very nice!! You've got a new subbie here!!
Elaine Petrakis - Hi Elaine!! Thank you SO much for visiting...and subscribing. And thank you for all the kind words. You made my day!! I am happy to share how I make my videos. But I must say I am very impressed with yours!! You have a wonderful channel!! And your level of creativity is amazing. I just use the Canon Rebel SL2 on a tripod that Sean recommended. The rest of the stuff I use are hand-me-downs from my son (who is grown now who used to have a TH-cam channel) which includes a MacBook with Final Cut Pro. I list everything in my description below. Other than that I just plod through trying to do the best I can as a new channel. LOL!!! Thanks again for being here!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
Hi Mary. Wonderful. Wonderful. I googled my zone today and I am a 6 A according to Google. I live in the mighty cold NE PA. I remember an article that I read maybe 1 year ago or so. But this woman and her husband started a lavender farm. I don't know if farm is the right word but that's neat. And I am going to buy some um you know this video. (Sorry since my stroke I forget a lot.) Shoot. Anyway I'm planning on buying some.. I usually write down everything you say. But I've been watching your videos for hours almost 3. So I am saving it so not to have to search. I want to let you know I think you are the sweetest teacher ever. Well it's getting late and I think I'll tune into one more. It's not often I get to relax and enjoy time for myself. Thank you so so very much. Now you take care of yourself and God bless you and your family. 💕
Marcy VanDenburg - Fantastic! It works out to be so much more reasonable than buying the ones in bottles at the store. And you really can customize it anyway you want. My girlfriend makes hers with Ginger and turmeric! Thanks so much for being here. Love, Mary❤️🤠❤️

Hi Mary! WOW! You are a natural! You have a very soft and pleasant presentation. You would do super on any Morning Show during the holidays like Good Morning America! Very impressed! Kuddos to you!
Hi Mary. I make tea blends with my foraged rosehips but didn't think about adding it to my elderberry syrup to add a little more vitamin C. Good thought! Thank you for sharing. Blessings 💗 Mickey
Mary, I made this wonderful syrup with whole rose hips like you did and followed your instructions and it came out beautifully. Today I tried another batch, but instead of whole rose hips, I used the cut and sifted kind, and I got very little syrup, a little over a pint. Last batch was 3 pints. There’s a lot of “mush” in the strainer that I will put into ice cube trays, and freeze but I like the whole rose hips better. If I’m going to go through this process, I want to get as much syrup as I can.
i use an immersion blender before i strain the berries, also you can use the frozen leftover berries to put in kefir water, i also put some in white vinegar to flavor it lol i need a life love your videos one more thing i do haha I put cornstarch at the end and cook it a little to make the syrup thicker.
Hello Mary, really enjoy your videos. Question about how many more uses from the same batch? I know you mention tea ☕️ and Some on ice cubes good ideas 💡
You are incredible and a natural born teacher. It is a pleasure to watch and learn and as soon as I can I am going to be making a lot of what you have shown, Thank you for doing these videos.

Bumblebee Apothecary - Thanks SO much for visiting!! I love natural remedies. I inherited this way of thinking from my mom. She always turned to natural home remedies. And she’s 93 now...so she must have done something right!! Love, Mary❤️🤠❤️
Hi, Loved this recipe and plan to make it. My question is about the hairs the rose hips have. I used a cheese cloth to strain the mixture. I would also love to try making the tea with the leftovers, but how do I deal with the hairs that might go through the strainer?
New sub! Great video! I just ordered dried elderberries to make syrup for my family and your video is the best😉. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. God bless❤️

I knew this was the channel for me! I found you through Whippoorwill Homestead! I have Nourishing Traditions too. Love this book! I will be checking out your playlist. I live in central MS and it’s HOT outside so I will just sit with a cup of coffee and watch your videos😊. God bless❤️
Hello I loved the video! I pick my own elderberrys and have made my own syrup for years now. Since we can't say "cure" I'll leave it out. Let me tell you what I do. Forage my own elderberrys taking a very long time to remove from the stems. Yes we eat them raw and have had stems left in the berries. The don't hurt. My 11yr old Has eaten plenty. I loved what you put into your mixture I will try! I usually add cloves and lots of ginger. From what I have researched it stays good for 2 months in the fridge. I freeze mine in freezer bags and use when needed. I also freeze my berries and use when ready xoxo keep up the great videos
Made this and it is great. Would it affect the outcome too much to reduce the honey? Also, could y’advise how much vodka to use? I find myself wanting to be able to preserve it in case we don’t use by 4 weeks?? Thanks Mary
Got the supplies from your links, and finally getting around today to make this. We are actually fighting a cold, so I should have totally done this 2 weeks ago! I'll let you know how it goes! ~ Brenda thanks again for sharing this.
Lotz Home & Office - Oh my goodness!! I’m so sorry you are all fighting a cold. Mix honey and ginger together too and take some of that also. Hope you all feel better soon!! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️
Hi Mary! I just discovered you! I'm so excited to dive into making this recipe along with many of your others. Thank you so much for being so thorough. It's incredibly helpful! How long does this syrup last?
Why does this video have so many commercials on it? It seemed like it was literally every 3 to 5 minutes. Very difficult to hold a train of thought. Otherwise, I love Mary’s videos!!!
Hi Mary. Could I use my frozen elderberries? Maybe use less added water? I absolutely love your idea of using the ice cubes elderberry debris. Thank you so very much. You are a great teacher.
I watched a video yesterday where they were making a tincture with the fresh frozen elderberries and they said to use equal parts of berries and liquid.
Hi Everyone! With cold and flu season just around the corner, I love to make homemade Elderberry Syrup and tuck it away in my fridge. How about you? Love, Mary
Mary's Nest does this Elderberry Syrup need to be refrigerated?
Rhonda Arnwine - Hi Rhonda, Yes, it should be refrigerated. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️
@@MarysNest How long will this last in the refrigerator? Also can this be frozen in ice cube trays without losing effectiveness? Thank you so much.
How do you buy her a rose hips and elderberry and Hibiscus
Sorry where do you b
RECIPE & TIMESTAMPS
2:15 (2 cups of dried elderberry)
2:28 (1 cup of hibiscus flowers)
3:00 (1 cup of rose hips, crushed)
3:40 (8 cups of water)
4:30 (optional ingredients for immune boost: Echinacea root, Astragalus root)
Simmer for 1 hour (reduced to half)
8:30 (strain)
9:30 (spent solids good for tea)
12:00 (spent solids into ice tray)
12:45 (1 cup of honey added to the 4 cups of syrup)
SIMPLIFIED RECIPE IN PARTS
2 parts dried elderberry
1 part hibiscus flower
1 part rose hips
8 parts water
Simmer, reduce to half, let cool until warm (not hot)
1 part raw honey
More honey is needed if you want it to last a long time in the refrigerator. I keep mine for up to a year. I actually do half decoction and half raw honey. Yes it is sweet, but we only take about a TBSP and it is also great to add to tea.
I just love your channel! I should of been born in the 1800's.😊 I dehydrate the leftover mixture and powder it for nutriblasts or smoothies. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
I was wondering if I could dehydrate the leftovers 🤔 Can it be used for tea?
Me too! I really enjoy all period dramas too 😊
I just made this syrup, and it came out spectacularly!
Get a very accurate reading of your B-12.
Here in 2022 this world needs more Marys! 💚 Thanks for sharing!
You brought a smile to my face because it reminded me of "Anne of Green Gables" when Anne gave her friend Diana Barry some of Marilla's elderberry tonic. Diana drank too much at got drunk! :)
Thank you so much for all of your life lessons.
It definitely is, what you may also add is olive leaves too as they are quite antiviral, its so nice to see people returning to natural remedies so much better than drugs
I remember that episode!😅😅😅
One of my favorite childhood books.
I thought it was currant wine??
I add cinnamon sticks, powdered ginger and cloves. I also use agave syrup instead of honey. So delicious. I also adore the smell.
I am going to save our maple syrup bottles for future elderberry syrup. Thank you for everything you do Mary. Love from a Mary in The Sunshine State
! PERFECT DURING COVID TIMES !! Thank you Mary
Love, Mary
Cant wait to try this recipe with licorice root instead of the hibiscus!

We Just harvested our first round of elderberries! CONGRATS on 1 Million subscribers!! 🎉😊
What a great idea to use strained elderberry, Hibiscus Flowers and rose hip to have tea instead of throwing it out. Also great idea to put it in ice cube trays to just pop out when you want tea. Love that. Thanks for sharing. I am definitely going to do this.

I love the idea of freezing the used herbs to use as a tea. Thank You

You are absolutely precious! Lovely beautiful spirit I love listening to you teach! Thank you for this elderberry video. I got more from seeing you in this video than any other video and am inspired to try this myself, as I am spending $$$ on purchasing homemade elderberry from another local lady. Great idea using the ice cubes! Also, using rosehips and hibiscus which I have on hand. Thank you for your recipe. Do you ever add ginger and cinnamon to your mixture?
My second time making this syrup. Awesome flavor and nutritious. I loved adding the frozen berries to my morning smoothie. Thanks for your commitment.
Oh Mary, i enjoy every single one of your videos.
You are the only 1 that l follow because your remeides work l have done 3 or more of your recipes. They are all Great. 👍👍👍
I swear by taking elderberry. I love it ! tfs🥰❄☃🌦🏜💐🌞🪐☔✝💗
Thats a great idea to add hibiscus and rosehips but I would add them to the last 5 or 10 minutes to the boiling elderberries otherwise, I would be reducing thei vitamin C and antioxidant properties significantly. Thanks for the recipe! I will be trying it with that slight variation.
Elderberry syrup is so good for you. I use Ceylon cinnamon sticks, star anise, and echinacea
Mary,
Thank you for blessing us with what the Lord has blessed you with!
How long will the elderberry syrup last in the refrigerator? (Mae Gray)
I gather and make this every September in uk but I add cloves lemon juice and ginger
I made this today even the frozen herbs for tea later. Thank you so much for helping others learn to help themselves ❤

My name is marianne and i watch your shows every single day and ive ordered the 3 booke on traditional bone broth fats and the other one as well your simple amazing

Hi Jamie, Thank you SO much!! Yes, I was raised by two parents who lived during the Depression of the 1930s. I was taught to never waste anything!! Love, Mary
Those glove potholders are lovely!
Gonna start my journey into herbal medicinals with elderberry syrup. Thx! 💜💙♥️☺️

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. WHAT YOU DO MATTERS AND IS HELPING MANY.
HERE IS TO YOU, MARY. TAKE A BOW.

Ditto on your reply!
Hi Mary. Wonderful. 💕
Mary this is wonderful! I need to do this! Susan metzger was just asking about this!
I'm making this now! It smells so good!! Can't wait to make tea with the leftover ingredients! I always thought this was hard to make! Thank you!!

Hi Mary. I make tea blends with my foraged rosehips but didn't think about adding it to my elderberry syrup to add a little more vitamin C. Good thought! Thank you for sharing. Blessings 💗 Mickey
I love your channel! Yes, I’m pretty much watching videos back to back 😆
Hi Tashi!! LOL!! You are so sweet!! I'm glad you're here!! Love, Mary
I am here because school just started and my son is sick. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤
Hi just wanted to know if you could use the strained fruit to make a vinegar

Hi Mary. This was very informative. Thank you.
I’m taking a tablespoon of liquid elderberry now… wasn’t sure how much you can take in a day? Thanks for a great video!
Sounds great. I usually take about that during cold and flu season. And increase it to 2 teaspoons three times per day if I get sick. ❤️🤗❤️
Wow I make Elderberry syrup also, but yours as a different twist to it so next batch I will make it your way cause I have all the ingredients. But I use dates to sweet mine instead of honey.

I sure love your show, Mary, and your recipes. Thank you. You are a woman after my own heart.
Hi, Loved this recipe and plan to make it. My question is about the hairs the rose hips have. I used a cheese cloth to strain the mixture. I would also love to try making the tea with the leftovers, but how do I deal with the hairs that might go through the strainer?
Love your videos! Since you waste nothing, what would you do with a jar of elderberry syrup that is over a year old?
That's just what i needed love you chang
Thank you Mary.

Would it affect the
outcome too much to reduce the honey?
Also, could y’advise how much vodka to use? I find myself wanting to be able to preserve it in case we don’t use by 4 weeks?? Thanks Mary
Mary, do you have a video on making organic tofu? I did a search and didn't find one. There are lots of videos about this, but I trust your info.
I don’t but that’s a great idea!! I’ll add it to the list!! Love, Mary

I watched a video yesterday where they were making a tincture with the fresh frozen elderberries and they said to use equal parts of berries and liquid.
