    Join us Wednesday, October 26th, at 8PM EDT, for another episode of Tech Tactics Live! This episode’s topic is the 2009-2012 911 (997) Buyers Guide. We have Tech Tactics Live fan favorite Nathan Merz joining us to help navigate through what to look for when shopping for the last of the 997-generation cars. On this show, we’ll focus on the "regular" 911’s and special editions. No Turbos or GT3’s.

    Thanks for the video.
    I just a 997.2 C4S from 2009 in Switzerland and I’m absolutely in love with my car. Despite of its 147’000 km roughly 91’350 miles it just looks pristine as it has been always serviced at Porsche and the previous owners took care of it. Also the built quality of the interior it’s incredible (mine has the full leather package). I hope engine and pdk hold up on their reputation. Market here is pretty wild though. My Porsche with 40’000 dolars of original extras cost me 60’000 dolars. GTS are a 15’000.- to 20’000 bump and turbos 10’000 more.

    There was mention of the 997 being light, but the 991 is actually lighter than the 997 (even though it’s larger) due to them using aluminum panels in the newer models.

    • @nathanmerz
      @nathanmerz ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are correct, the 991 actually comes in slightly lighter than the 997.2 which was quite the achievement since the car physically grew in most measurements. Weight of course is highly specific depending on model configuration, option, transmission, etc.

    Something that wasn’t mentioned in the carbon vs steel brake comparison was steering feel. I switched from carbon to steel in a previous 911 for track reasons; the steering was much more responsive with PCCB. Most likely due to increased unsprung weight with ss brakes. Great video! Thanks.

    Another great video, Vu, your the man, but Nathan's expertise is just off the charts. As a proud 996 owner, always warms my heart when you both show the car the respect it deserves as you did once again early in the show. Should, but never will silent all the air-cooled snobs out there that will just never give it its due, which is fine with me since the hate is what keeps it so affordable!!!

    I’ve owned a 09 997.2 C4S 6sp cabriolet for close to 10 years. It’s approaching 80k miles - 60k miles are mine - and I love it. Major work that I’ve undertaken around the 60-70k miles are replacing the cabriolet hydraulic arms, suspension overhaul and 3 out of 4 window motors. The PCM was getting wonky so I’ve replaced it with a pioneer unit and an Audison dsp, which is an improvement on performance. I wish Porsche had come out with a head unit upgrade, which I’m sure it will in time. None are cheap repairs but I’ve not spared costs to keep the car running in top condition - and the car does not fail me. It’s still tight, reliable and super balanced to drive. It’s by far the longest I’ve kept a car and I don’t see myself selling this car anytime soon. I also own an 86 3.2 Turbo look Targa which I’ve recently acquired. I think that’s another keeper - but that’s another story for another day! Best, David (from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

      PS - I imported the car from the UK as I couldn’t find a similar spec with a manual transmission locally. So I’m a little wary of rust issues because of winter salt on UK roads - but so far so good!

    I don't know why people call the PDK a manual. The internals are similar to a manual transmission, but a manual is a manual, meaning you have to manually disengage the transmission and manually shift a lever to select a gear. You can skip gears to select whatever you want. Autos include dual clutch, single clutch, torque converters, CVTs, etc., and they have automatic mechanisms for disengaging the transmission and relaying gear selections to automatic gear actuators.

    • @JoJoJoker
      @JoJoJoker หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right? Sportomatic was a manual. PDK is an automatic. A fantastic automation…

    Have you done a similar vlog regarding the 997.2 Turbo and Turbo S? I purchased my dream car, a 2011 997.2 Turbo S Coupe in Carrera White (1 of 78 brought to the US), on consignment from our Porsche dealership after the original owner became more enamored with a 2011 GT2. Thanks for this, good info. I have a 2010 997.2 Targa 4 - Canadan car. The headlights are not bi-xenon, perhaps US cars all had that headlight style? Also, no alcantara headliner, where Nathan mentioned all 997's had that headliner. Perhaps because mine is a Targa?
    I also noticed the PDK shift paddles on the GTS car had large "flappy paddles" on the steering wheel with - on the left and + on the right. Mine has the thumb switch on the wheel for + and the finger switch for - on both sides of the steering wheel. Can my version be changed to the floppy paddles? (much better implementation.)

    • @dweyhrauch09
      @dweyhrauch09 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question for RennList but as another prospective buyer, I've just heard:
      - still susceptible to bore scoring for the 997.2, but thought to be at a more acceptable rate
      - lifetime mileage you'd expect 150k to 200k at least (!), but, better maintenance and higher mileage is better than lower mileage and non-diligent maintenance
      - get a PPI on any car, so the question could be moot.
      - I'm personally looking for 70k or less, well-maintained, and would expect to pay a little more for it (may be a 991.2 though for the 9A2 engine and new cylinder lining)

      Jake Ruby says its a potential problem but the issue seems to be shut up by Porsche or others? Not any review from youtubers on 997 Turbo, not even from the famous ones like Demuro, Nick Murray or UKs 9WERKS TV or PCA never mention this issue. Is the problem a forumghost or is it real?🤷🏼

I've got a 2012 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet 997.2 with only 26,700 miles on it. Great show! But my question would've been about value of the cars $ ?

  • @Soh90

    I personally think that the used car market is asking far too much for these cars. They are GREAT cars, no doubt, but they’re aren’t exclusive or really anything special to be asking $50,000 for an example that 14 years old with 60,000 miles on the odometer. These things should be going for $30k - $35k all day for a standard 2S model with a stick.

With the Chinese economy in the crapper, now Prosche feels the need to redirect allocation to the U.S. At no time did the demand for Porsche product line fall off in the U.S. Now all of a sudden we are important again.
