The origin of why Kratos named him Arteus is so sweet and heartwarming, and I don't see enough people bring it up. Everything he wanted from his son in a single name, His son gave him hope and wanted his son to ultimately be happy. It shows how much he loved him even before the beginning of the game. Its so powerful and it was always there under the surface.
17:33 "Look it's mother's..." Faye left a handprint on the rock wall and that's what Atreus sees. The handprint is also in the center of a faded yellow painted symbol. The same type of symbol that has shown Kratos where to climb, what to duck under, what to lift out of the way to continue on their path to Jotunheim. Faye left all of those marks because she foresaw the path that Kratos and Atreus would need to take to get them through the journey. She even left the yellow painted words that told Kratos to throw his axe in the Lake of Nine in order to wake up the World Serpent. Most games have some sort of mark to help mark the path and lead you where to go. I like that God of War actually gives you an in-story reason for all those yellow marks leading you where you need to go.
You you're telling me that she foresaw all the back tracking they had to do because a certain pathway was blocked so they had to find a way around said blocked pathway?
HOE-LEEEE-FREAKING-CRAP!!!! played this a dozen time never made THAT connection! Probably because I play so many of these type games Uncharted, Tomb Raider, etc that I've just become accustomed to having those conveniently marked markers telling us where to go that I don't even think about it nowadays. Like we all know now with games such as these our path is pointing us 👈🏽 then I MUST go 👉🏾 because it 100% means it's loot and/or collectibles 😂 It didn't even register that canon lore is that the prophecy/future seeing wife who sent us on this journey and marked the entire path and instructions because.... well yeah she forsaw it already. Fawk that's good!
There is _so_ much foreshadowing towards Atreus being Loki, it's honestly kind of a shock I didn't notice it when I played through it my first time. Baldur, in Norse mythology, is killed when Loki shoots him with an arrow made out of mistletoe: the only thing that can harm him. Loki is the father of Jormungandr. Loki has a penchant for turning into animals. Kratos's name on the walls is "Farbauti", the name of Loki's father, and his mother's full name is Laufey, who was Loki's mother. There's a lot that makes _so much more sense_ on a replay.
The bit Mimir was saying here 28:28 was: “Prophecy doesn’t expect this for a hundred more winters at least. You’ve changed something. Prophecy didn’t count on you.” Basically Kratos has taken the place of Fárbauti (which translates according Wikipedia to dangerous striker, anger striker, or sudden-striker which certainly works for Kratos) father of Loki in Norse mythology and upset prophecy and the times things are supposed to take place.
He hasn't "taken Farbauti's place". He _is_ Farbauti. These games take enormous liberties with the source material. And it's great, it gives the writers room to take the story in unexpected directions. But it's not like Kratos inserted himself into norse mythology, causing characters and events to be shifted around. In the God of War universe, Kratos has always been Farbauti, Loki has always been a boy named Atreus, etc. As for changing fate... Well, let me just say the writers want us to believe the Giants' prophecies blindly. But take a step back, and remember the Giants were just as fallible as the rest of us. They may be able to see the future, but it doesn't mean they interpret their visions correctly...
I think the two of you had my favourite reaction to the Loki reveal that I've seen. You'd be surprised how many people don't understand the reference. The way this series plays with and respects the mythology it's drawing from is so cool.
55:40 I saw a translation of the lyrics in the background music when Kratos opens the door. "Murder. Murder Thor. War of Gods." Imagine being Kratos and waking up to a lightning storm like that. I'd imagine part of him must've been thinking "Zeus" for a second.
the crazy thing is that after this banger of a game they came back with an even better second part to then top it off with an even more amazing free dlc. the whole modern god of war experience is just getting better and better u til the end.
To answer your question, I have a few favorite moments from this playthrough. In random order, they are: 1. Your reaction to Kratos killing the dragon (my reaction was nearly identical). The way Kratos just watches the dragon fall and stands still as a statue while the jaws land on either side of him is one of his most badass moments in any of the GoW games. 2. Maybe I'm biased, but the Atreus reveal at the end of the story. A jaw-dropping WTF moment for fans everywhere. And the more you read about Norse mythology, the more shocking of a reveal it is. It's like "oh, so this kid is going to lead an army of giants against Asgard and bring about the end of the world. Got it!" 3. Last but definitely not least... right at the start of this video. That brief trip into Niflheim was entirely too goddamn funny, and it made my day. Thank you ladies, enjoy the side quests, and I'll see you at RAGNAROK!
I remember seeing an interview with a couple of the writers of this game where they said that Atreus being revealed as Loki wasn't in the original draft. They had actually planned on Loki being a character you met either in this game or in the next one. It was only after working over Atreus' backstory that they realized how similar it was to Loki's story that they thought of making him Loki. They pitched the idea to the other writer/director Cory Barlog, and he loved it, so Atreus became Loki.
GoW has one of my favorite stories of redemption in video games. Kratos did a lot of terrible things, even he sees himself as a monster, and these are about trying to be a better person. The Bioshock series has one of my favorite mind-bending plots. Honestly, people only grind Niflheim to build the gear you’ll need to take on the Valkyrie Queen Sigrún. She’s the hardest battle in the entire game. The other Valkyries come in a variety of difficulties.
Loki's is Jormungandr's father. At one point of the game Mimir tells you that Jormungandr said that he seems to recognize Atreus from somewhere but doesn't know where from.
What I know is that Loki has a child from Giant and one of them that appears in this game is the world serpent jomurgandr and the incident where Atreus summoned the world serpent is one proof that Atreus is Loki.
Tips for Ragnarok: Craft better armor, Don't pick the dauntless shield (even though many prefer it, with your style of fighting, it won't be that good), use shield more, Do side missions that grant better armor, Grind in your off-time for better equipment, View everything during cut scenes.
It's going to be amazing if you guys continue to Ragnarok. If you do, just make sure to take it all in slowly. The game is so amazing. This was an amazing experience!
Faye as in Laufay mother of Loki in Norse myths! Loki was also responsible for the death of Baldur, he's the one that makes an arrow out of mistletoe! Loki is a shapeshifter in notse myths and Atreus asks if he can turn into an animal! Jormungandr is a child of Loki in the myths!
I hope you guys watch the documentary. It's fantastic! My favorite part was when you realized how good the blades were. Not sure what episode it was in, but that was awesome... especially that "YYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!" you belted out.
I'm so glad you decided to fight a Valkyrie. The Ragnarok story assumes you've seen those moves before, and the fight really teaches you to use your shield and swap weapons.
The reaction to the second name of Atreus was so good! When they reveal it everything clicks together but not until then, this game just... so perfect. And Ragnarok is even better, i'm so excited for both of you to play it!!
so the reason because brok calls mimir goat-boy it's because mimir has goat horns plus if you want to beat the valkyries you need to level up your armors and the weapons and doing side quest can give a lot of materials
Kara’s not the toughest Valkyrie, but she’s not the easiest either. All of the Valkyrie will really test your parry and block breaking game. Kara’s schtick is the adds, mostly. She’s the one Valkyrie fight where the blades of Chaos are absolutely imperative because they allow you to hit many enemies over a wide area with basic strikes. I find that Valkyrie fights are often about blowing your cooldowns to make the biggest dent in her health bar that you can, and then surviving until the cooldowns finish so you can use them again.
Wonderful show. Just wonderful! Happy to have been on this journey so far. Hoping you two will also tackle Ragnarök when you feel up to it 🙏 11:34 is one of my favorite moments in the game. It goes hand in hand with when Kratos gave the Knife he made for Atreus some time back. Then Atreus was ready. Now, Kratos is ready. Having shed is bandages and for the first time made himself vulnerable in front of his son. 'Carry her,' and for this moment be a boy again.
26:39 You can 100% complete the game before visiting Jotunheim, or well, just about if my memory serves. I did that, and it makes the conversation down the stair case kind of awkward. "We could still save some Valkyries?' Euhm...nope, did all that. "Maybe other people have some problems still?" Boy, we have fully upgraded gear. Sit down, we are going home and rest.
29:51 Hey, do what you feel like! I would say that doing all the Valkyries is a fun challenge which also allows you to get some story in there as well. The side-quest of the Dwarves is mostly just to get better equipment and gear. But the Valkyries are 1) A challenge to find and 2) A Challenge to beat, but 3) they still give story development. Highly recommended! but maybe you do need some better gear for that....mmmh...guess those Dwarven side-quest sound really appealing all of a sudden. The only side thing I'd say leave it, is hunting down all the Eyes of Odin. Because they REALLY make you look for them, and are easy to miss. But they have little lore value here.
30:15 Are you dumb for not picking up Atreus could be Loki? Not really. Heck, even knowing Atreus was half giant wouldn't make you immediately go 'OMG, he is the god Loki', because...why would you? What something is you could have found out before hand was that Faye, Kratos'wife, was a giant. They are subtle about it, but it all is because of Baldur. He was on a search to someone. When he met Kratos he boasted 'I thought your kind was supposed to be more enlightened', which could be a reference to how the Greeks were scholars and such, but it was a reference to how the Giants could see the future. He also said 'I thought you'd be bigger...' tapping into the same assumption Kratos made, that the race 'giant' also meant they would be enormous, but that is not the case. As Faye was not enormous. Baldur was also looking to get into Jotunheim, to find the Giants. The entire quest of Baldur was to find and hunt down giants. And instead he found a Greek and his son.
37:55 hey, completely fair! Different strokes for different people. I don't know if there is someone who made a lore video or something similar, but you can always look up other people's playthroughs and see how some of these side quests tie up their story lines. While God of War motivates you to look around and better your gear, in order to progress through the game story wise or other, you can get by and complete the game without ever going overboard with upgrades. What you fin on the path of the main quest is plenty. These games paced that out pretty neat. The side quests only fill out the world. Lore wise and space wise. It is neat if you're into that, but not the biggest loss if you aren't.
I’d definitely recommend seeing all the Valkyries through as it gets you some of the best armor and axe/blade attachments. To help out with the Valkyries go back to Alfheim and look up how to get the “Amulet of Kvasir”. It helps unlock “Realm Shift” which slows down all time except for you on any last second dodge. It is a huge help for all encounters and it’s so much fun to use once you get better at dodging. The rest of the side quests are always good for some more lore bits and the Muspelheim/Niflheim challenges are a lot of fun too. The Wulver in Niflheim reminded me, the more you upgrade your armor/weapons the lower your enemies power levels drop as it reflects you becoming stronger. A reminder you can upgrade the axe/blades pommels for a stats boost. Congrats on completing this epic story! This playthrough is how I found your channel and subscribed. Best of luck to you both for the next part of this epic journey. I’ll see you at Ragnarok!
Great play through! And it was so hard not yo spoil the Loki ending... One of the truly amazing twists that no one sees coming. You both were a true pleasure to watch, and to share your journey. Enjoy Ragnarok!
It doesn't matter how many times I see it, that name reveal in Jotunheim is always a highlight of watching blind playthroughs. I'm very happy that this game has introduced me to find another fun channel. Can't wait to see Ragnarok whenever you get around to it.
I always love that moment in the pause after the name reveal, where the players are watching Atreus' face in an entirely new light like, "Could that really be the face of a vile trickster?"
You guys should react to the documentary of the making of God of war 2018 Rising Kratos it’s amazing I’m sure you’ll love it You’ll get to see an awesome behind the scenes action moments
I'll never not get emotional when they scatter Fayes ashes, my grandmother who I've mentioned in the past wanted to be cremated and her ashes scattered but that wish wasn't respected, making this cathartic for me. I had as much trust in her as Kratos does in Faye
I would also recommend “Untangling God of War” by the channel “Good Blood”, it’s an amazing video!! You don’t have to react to it and put that on the channel, but it’s a great watch! So happy you (finally) finished the game!! Ready yourselves ladies, Ragnarok is next!!!!
@@cait_and_kati it's not a spoiler or anything. I think Mimir mentions something in one of the sidequests or stories. If you guys do next game... I cannot recommend enough doing side missions on the way. It's going to be a lot of story you won't want to miss.
If you do decide play the side content (which has some great content that actually ties into the main story and its themes), then i'd recommend the 1st valkyrie you fight is gunnr. She is found by thamur's hand and is the first one you meet when following the main storyline. She is by far the easiest and gives you a nice introduction to their basic move set. After that, you can do them in any order but i'd suggest leaving the 2 in the mountain to last as they are amongst the toughest. Once you beat them all, you get a secret fight against the hardest opponent in the entire game - the valkyrie queen!
You finally finished the long, long journey! And soon, another will begin of PHENOMENAL quality! A suggestion to watch, one that will leave you with genuine tears, is "How God of War helped me through grief" from Zivalene. A very personal story from her, and an incredibly touching testament to the power of video game narratives!😢
I picked collectables/extras up before moving to new areas and did 100% it, HOWEVER, that did take forever, like 4-7 days of playing all day, and it would've been pretty miserable to watch so I think you did great with a balance of the experience and story. Go ahead and finish the valkyries and quests tho! There's more cutscenes for finishing them. Also, you can lower the difficult before those battles then turn it back up without affecting trophies etc. I did my playthrough on the highest difficulty and the only thing I couldn't handle at that level was the queen valkyrie. Still got everything!
A new subscriber here) OMG, RAGNAROK, YES!!! When I first came across this game I fell in love with it and also watched a couple of reaction and playthrough videos afterwards, but honestly, yours is the best! Thanks to this game I found out about your channel and now can just sit and relax watching your videos after a workday)
Thank you so much! It’s been a wild playthrough and I’m so happy we decided to play it. I was stunned by how much I truly enjoyed it in every facet. -K
ONWARD to Ragnarok! By the way, I still might want to consider doing the Valkyries because there is an interesting story tidbit that’ll come into play in the next game.
Let’s gooooooo surprise heheheheh you two thank you for making my day better and I can’t wait to see you guys play Ragnarok don’t worry no spoilers from me lol have a wonderful day
It's been one hell of a journey ladies, that I'm glad I got to experience with you guys. Now it's on to the masterpiece known as Ragnarok. Also yeah the valkyries are such a pain to deal with, but i won't lie when i say it was funny watching kati loose her mind fighting one 😂.
Since you have already played Souls games, God of war won't be a problem and the fact that you are on balanced difficulty. Starting with Gunnr might be better because you can actually see how Valkyries fight generally and each Valkyrie has special attacks of its own with Kara's being enemy summon. You cant actually focus on Kara and her attacks through the draugrs since you have no previous experience of defeating one. Blocking and parrying is very important with the first Valkyries while dodging becomes more useful with the final one. Focus on yellow ring and red ring attacks, Yellow - Block breaking and parry-able attacks (the Scythe attack) Red - Unblockable attacks that needs to be dodged (the singular ring throw with Kara) Pretty much every other attack is blockable and ofc be dodged. I know people are hyped for Ragnarok but I insist you finish this game's side quests completely. Much of it comes to play in Ragnarok and much of the "side-mysteries" wont go over your head. Also note that reading Atreus Journal and lore markers would be very helpful. (P.S : Realm shift ability is very useful for defeating Valkyries, look it up if you want.)
Well, well, well, the end of one journey is the beginning of another (Ragnarok)! After finishing up the game you two can see why this won "Game of the Year "👍Such a excellent ending to this story and it does an excellent job setting up the sequel! 2:28 first of all, facts. Second, you have a good singing voice Cait and third, I have a video for you two that you can react to on or off camera (hopefully on camera): Mimir's boat stories that reveal more lore regarding the history of various other characters and events in the game. You've heard some of them but not all😅 The exact name of the video is "God of War All Mimir Boat Stories ". It's 32 minutes long👍Btw, 20:35 Excellent reactions to that news 😂😂😂😂😂
It was great seeing you play this game and looking forward to your reactions to Ragnarok! One thing to keep in mind for when you play Ragnarok - canon-wise GOW2018 was 100%'ed so depending on how much you care, it might be a good idea to look up at least the ending to some side quests from GOW2018 (if ultimately you won't do them on that planned livestream) but you can also just ignore that if you don't feel like it
I’d love to see you two take on the Horizon games if you haven’t already. As for this game’s favorite moment… really what touched me most was just the insta-bond with Atreus. Even when he was being a little twit, I feel like you two were genuinely upset with the character because you knew he was better than that.
The fact that Atreus is Loki makes even more sense when you realize Loki's father in norse myths is Farbauti, meaning "Cruel Striker". That fits Kratos like a glove. Remember that name, "Cruel Striker". You will hear it come Ragnarök.
Onto Ragnarok!!
The origin of why Kratos named him Arteus is so sweet and heartwarming, and I don't see enough people bring it up. Everything he wanted from his son in a single name, His son gave him hope and wanted his son to ultimately be happy. It shows how much he loved him even before the beginning of the game. Its so powerful and it was always there under the surface.
you get it an u helped us get it
Couldn't have said it any better!
It's one of the most beautiful parts in the game imo. The sincerity and vulnerability Kratos brings when reminiscing is very touching.
When you think about it, Atreus(Loki) brought Kratos hope in his dark times and even inspired him to help people and be the God of Hope.
17:33 "Look it's mother's..."
Faye left a handprint on the rock wall and that's what Atreus sees. The handprint is also in the center of a faded yellow painted symbol.
It is neat if you're into that, but not the biggest loss if you aren't.
hello, i've been waiting for this chapter
now things will go wild, have fun
Ah the old ‘Montage of the Valkyries’ haha! We’ve all been there!
Cue Yackity Sax soundtrack.
The shield and the light/heavy runic attacks are your friend in valkyrie fights
You guys should react to the documentary of the making of God of war 2018 Rising Kratos it’s amazing I’m sure you’ll love it
You’ll get to see an awesome behind the scenes action moments
I cried from the valdur fight and more here and loki
Congrats on finishing it! It's been great going along for the ride and watching ya'll experience a story I enjoyed so long ago.
It’s been an incredible game and I’m so happy we played it. -K
So excited for you both for Ragnarok. One of my favorite games!
First time I finished this game I cried like a baby🥹
Great job finishing it up. Really glad you were told to go home.
If you liked this one you will LOVE Ragnarok. Looking forward to it.
I'll never not get emotional when they scatter Fayes ashes, my grandmother who I've mentioned in the past wanted to be cremated and her ashes scattered but that wish wasn't respected, making this cathartic for me. I had as much trust in her as Kratos does in Faye
im so hyped to watch you play ragnarok
I would also recommend “Untangling God of War” by the channel “Good Blood”, it’s an amazing video!! You don’t have to react to it and put that on the channel, but it’s a great watch! So happy you (finally) finished the game!! Ready yourselves ladies, Ragnarok is next!!!!
I love it so many some equipment have the ability shut it
I love y'all! Been a joy to follow with ye on this journey and I DEFINITELY look forward to GOW Ragnarok! Y'all. Will. LOSE. YOUR. MINDS!
ahh man, congratulations! what a fun playthrough, i’m so glad i found your channel! you both are so funny. onto Ragnarok! 🎉
Thank you! -K
Can't wait to see your reactions to Ragnarök! That game....
I think the correct thing to do after watching about 20 hours worth of playthrough in a couple of days is to subscribe. Looking forward to Ragnarok!
Let’s goooo the end, finally. And now a new beginning 😈 The story of Atreus’ name is one of the best, love it
They called Mimir "Goat Boy" because he goes by a different name in a different land. Puck.
OH okay thank you. -K
@@cait_and_kati it's not a spoiler or anything. I think Mimir mentions something in one of the sidequests or stories.
If you guys do next game... I cannot recommend enough doing side missions on the way. It's going to be a lot of story you won't want to miss.
That and the fact that he has 2 horns in his head, which combined with the beard make him look like a goat
@@pub1 yeah, that too. But still goes back to him looking like that because of who he is.
Also, idk why I said Pan, he's supposed to be Puck.
can't wait to watch you play Ragnarok, there's a surprise at every corner 😊😊 you're gonna love it
This was such a good reveal that Faye = Laufey.
To celebrate and with great respect to Ragnarok please get yourself some mead as a toast Cait and Kati.🍺🍺
Wonderful watch
I picked collectables/extras up before moving to new areas and did 100% it, HOWEVER, that did take forever, like 4-7 days of playing all day, and it would've been pretty miserable to watch so I think you did great with a balance of the experience and story. Go ahead and finish the valkyries and quests tho! There's more cutscenes for finishing them. Also, you can lower the difficult before those battles then turn it back up without affecting trophies etc. I did my playthrough on the highest difficulty and the only thing I couldn't handle at that level was the queen valkyrie. Still got everything!
Now it's time for the God of war. Ragnarock.
You're going to love Ragnarok ❤️ I cant wait 🤗
A new subscriber here) OMG, RAGNAROK, YES!!! When I first came across this game I fell in love with it and also watched a couple of reaction and playthrough videos afterwards, but honestly, yours is the best! Thanks to this game I found out about your channel and now can just sit and relax watching your videos after a workday)
Thank you so much! It’s been a wild playthrough and I’m so happy we decided to play it. I was stunned by how much I truly enjoyed it in every facet. -K
You guys just got a mega fan of your Channel!
I really hope you two do a reaction to Raising Kratos for the channel. Just break it up into chapters if you have to.
ONWARD to Ragnarok!
By the way, I still might want to consider doing the Valkyries because there is an interesting story tidbit that’ll come into play in the next game.
Those Valkyries are going to give them hell 😂
@@james53876 One of them’s gonna get PTSD from that
Took my sweet time fully exploring, but it took me about 100 hours to platinum and 100% the game.
Let’s gooooooo surprise heheheheh you two thank you for making my day better and I can’t wait to see you guys play Ragnarok don’t worry no spoilers from me lol have a wonderful day
There is a secret/true ending after the main story is finished in God of War Ragnarök too. I can't say too much without spoiling though.
Great playthrough! Looking forward to Ragnarok
Damn! I was waiting your whole series for the 20:33 moment!! Well worth the wait :D
It was an INCREDIBLE discovery! -K
Great game,I can't wait for you to watch Raising Kratos, and play in Ragnarok.
You have to remember This Thor and Loki arent anything like Marvels versions. You guys will love Ragnarok ive played threw it 6 times already
Focus on yellow ring and red ring attacks,
Yellow - Block breaking and parry-able attacks (the Scythe attack)
Red - Unblockable attacks that needs to be dodged (the singular ring throw with Kara)
Pretty much every other attack is blockable and ofc be dodged.
The Valkyries are very very hard especially the queen Valkyrie
Oh God i just realized, you need to use the shield even more in the next game 😂🤣
"become a bear"
me: lmao
Stupid me didnt notice the dead fiants right away
You should watch the Raising Kratos documentary!
Please find some way to upload Raising Kratos to the channel!
Quick quick start Ragnarok!
One thing to keep in mind for when you play Ragnarok - canon-wise GOW2018 was 100%'ed so depending on how much you care, it might be a good idea to look up at least the ending to some side quests from GOW2018 (if ultimately you won't do them on that planned livestream) but you can also just ignore that if you don't feel like it
Its not considered as completed unless you beat all the valkyries including the valkyrie queen.. You can skip sidequests but not the valkyries 😊
Although besting sigrun without some of the side quest armor sets and upgraded gear would be difficult / near impossible for first time players.
@@pub1 well all they need i guess is the correct talisman and the armors from nifleheim
I will never go back to Niflhiem in 2018
You will be very happy with Ragnarok
My idea of doing 100% of a game is simply to get all the trophies, that's all.
That’s a valid definition. -K
Is Ragnarok gameplay gonna be released next week on your channel?
👀👀 -K
@@cait_and_kati Is that a yes, or a no?
Also u still need more of kratos by watching the other games cutscenes
It's actually pretty easy.
About 60 hours give or take 26:29
Love the adventure ladies. See at ragnarok.
I’d love to see you two take on the Horizon games if you haven’t already.
As for this game’s favorite moment… really what touched me most was just the insta-bond with Atreus. Even when he was being a little twit, I feel like you two were genuinely upset with the character because you knew he was better than that.
We absolutely adore Atreus as he is just one of those “good kid”s and we knew there was greatness in him. -K
Oh don’t forget too play the ragnarok dlc too when your done with ragnarok you will enjoy the next game I promise you!
Nice episode! If you guys haven't already, you should play Horizon Zero Dawn some time!
The fact that Atreus is Loki makes even more sense when you realize Loki's father in norse myths is Farbauti, meaning "Cruel Striker". That fits Kratos like a glove.
Remember that name, "Cruel Striker". You will hear it come Ragnarök.
Prepare to shit blood with the valkyries
