  • Hi all, I am producing this video to talk through the dual sub setup that Sonos has recently enabled with the release of Sonos S2 12.2.2 with the corresponding firmware update. This was a requested feature by some hardcore Sonos fans, as the subs aren't cheap... but this update brings about one of the best improvements in sound ever from any single feature. Watch on and find out!

    It's worth it. I have a small room and it's still 110% worth it. I was always able to localize the single sub and "hear" where it was. Since I added the second sub they both audibly disappeared in the room and the bass has reached true movie theater quality by filling the room ambience. IT'S WORTH IT!

    I moved a sub from the garage gym to my home theater room in attic (Arc, two play 1s and generation 2 sub) and placed the subs in the front two corners, ran TruePlay and adjusted settings as you recommend for the Arc and holy cow, it sounds insane now. The bass was great with one sub but with two subs I can't tell where it is coming from and I feel it in my body as well. Feels just like the movie theater now. Very happy with how it sounds.

    Ho Seh Liao! Received my Second Gen 3 Sub today. Bought another because I can also move it around and add it to different rooms. Added it to my Arc system in my Man-cave. It’s a small bonus room above our garage. Listening space is about 18x11 feet. I also have surrounds in there and the second Sub just opened the whole range so much more. I didn’t think the sub would be this transformative. To my ears, after running true play, it sounds like the mids and highs opened up even more. It’s nuts how good it sounds now! I used to have my bass level at +7 with one Sub, now I have to bring it down to +2, because I can feel the extra pressure at higher volumes 😂. Loving it and your videos!!!

    Peter, ANOTHER phenomenal video . . .WHAT timing!! THANK you!! I was actually wondering if adding another Sonos sub to my existing Gen3 was even POSSIBLE (using TruePlay ) I've done a LOT of reading on this topic and to sum up . . . unless one has a REALLY large room, the main advantage of a second or even 3? or 4? subs (YIKES!!! Let's not go there LOL) is as you say, a more even or balanced distribution of those frequencies in the room and not necessarily MORE bass volume per se. ONE Sonos sub on its own, delivers amazing bass and more than enough for most rooms I'd guess. But if your readers are interested in seeing other Videos supporting your concept here, may I suggest that they TH-cam REL videos explaining the advantages of several subs REL is arguably THE premier manufacturer of subs and they DO know what they are talking about and its NOT just to sell MORE subs LOL The differences are there for ANYONE to hear! Happy holidays to all !!

    • @davidbee8178
      @davidbee8178 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FORGOT to mention that when there are two or more subs, there are benefits that extend into the midrange, filling it out and making it richer in tone and augmenting "spaciousness" - we're not talking louder or deeper here necessarily - we are talking QUALITY and integration of all frequencies above all - just saying

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there is also the redirection of more amplification power to the mid range and tweeters. A lot of people may not know but tweeters take quite a bit of power to drive too.

    Ever since I saw the news about the dual Sub being supported by Sonos I was waiting for this video. I actually already have 2 Subs, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. It looks like I have some shuffling of speakers to do this afternoon. Thanks for this update and I am looking forward to your followup videos regarding placement. I don't know if I missed it or not; when you were outlining the various possible placements I did not catch if you are including a placement where the Sub's are opposite one another, or is that an obvious "no, no"?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't do the directly opposite each other. Not that it's a no no, but there is a less even spread of sound if they are on the same side corner. If you have them mid room front and back it works well too but you have to ensure you are not sitting in the middle of the room else there will be a lot of cancellation.

    Excellent video Peter. I am now very curious about the two sub placement. You mentioned some of the more popular placement formats however you did not mention the one that seems to be the best for two subs and that is mid-wall front and back. Will you also be testing this location? Also I would be curious to know what size room you deem as too small for two subs. I have a dedicated listening room that is 14.9 feet by 10.4 feet with a 7.5 foot ceiling height and has bass traps in all corners. Thanks.

      I didn't mention the mid wall because the placement might get tricky for a lot of people given space constraints. I can do that though. Thanks for the feedback!
      As for room size, I was going to suggest 15'x10' with 8' ceiling as the cut-off for 2 subs. Below that size, might not be able to extract the max performance from 2 subs.

In the new house my living room is 19'x40' with 12' ceilings and I feel the Arc, Play 3 Surrounds and single sub are really lacking with the bass even though I cranked both the sub volume and bass up a bit. Would placing the subs in the rear be similar to having them up front? I have the two subs behind the couch at each corner but debating on doing the opposing corners.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Opposing corners can give a very even bass response in the room but if it somehow creates standing waves due to too symmetrical a placement or room dimensions, you might get cancelled out bass lines. But chances of getting more even bass is higher.

      If you are listening to music predominantly, then the Sonos Fives. But you won't need the Ones and the Sub much after that.

    Question to this post. If you have the GEN 3 Subs left and right of your TV. And you have the Sonos 5’s ( Pair ) at the rear. Wouldn’t those cancel each other out to a degree?

    • @mrgold3591
      @mrgold3591 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is my set up. The dual subs take the majority of the bass duties away from the rear Fives. The Fives are concentrating on the mids/highs and surround sound specific audio mostly with a reduced bass level compared Fives without subs.

    How is the punch and dynamics of two compared to a single one?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a lot a lot more headroom. I found that in a smaller room (bedroom), Trueplay pulled down the peaks significantly. There is a lot more dynamic range. That's why I say you need a min size room to benefit from dual sub.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. While I have not tested with both gen 3, I do not believe that it’s superior combination over a gen 2 and gen 3 combo. In fact, if anything, my guess is that the bass will be more evenly distributed.

      @@PeterPee The two Gen 3 subs sound terrific together, placed on either side of the sound bar and TV, maybe 10 feet apart. The room is filled with bass and very uniform. Non-directional. I think the combination works well. Maybe you should try that some time too. It may be as good or better than the gen 3 and gen 2 combination.

      So when you are playing a song or a movie etc, in the app of you click on what's playing next to the volume you should see a up arrow with a square and that would allow you to select your different rooms to play music etc.

      I see, okay sounds like all your components are hooked up into one group.
      1. Remove the SL from the group with the Arc and Sub
      2. Then add them back but into living room 2 (for example)
      This will allow you to manually group all speakers like my first comment, for movies, TV etc.
      Then when you want to listen to music then you can unselect living room 1 with the arc and sub.

      What i am getting at is the money your spending on low quality parts is phenomenally stupid. Youre better off buying an “all in one” theater package like samsung or JBL 9.1 than buying everything separately since we are talking soundbars here. Subs for me is the best i heard not the loudes yes,but the way it sounds it blends and apread in the room is amazing even i turn it really loud theres no distorsion at all,im not hearing those rattle sound of the speakers and the case of the wooden bos of sub woofers that for me is really anoying at ofcourse its wireless and easy to use and set because of the true play never i have the subs over powering the rest.
      Summary for me not the loudest always sounds the best,im not an audiophile but i tried many system,infinity,klipsh bose,b&w jbl yamaha but with sonos subs im amazed.and with the place we have 40 square meters room with 50 volume out of 100 is more than eneough
