    About to add a Sub to my Arc + double One set up. Thank you so much for all the invaluable information about Sonos ecosystem. Couldn't get here without your channel and Sonos really elevated my viewing/gaming experience. I was a bit afraid to add a Sub because I live in a condo, but had to go for it even if it means turning the sub down to next to nothing level because of all the recommendations. Please keep sharing your knowledge! Happy holidays.

    Finally an empirical test of the sub performance within the 3 possible orientations.
    Many ads for Sonos have the slot facing the MLP while I have mine placed sideway beside the tv console to save space. Have always wondered if it was the right way to do it since it contravenes most of the Sonos ads I have seen.
    I can now conclude that the ads are placing slots facing MLP for the maximum visual effect / presentation :)

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that’s correct. The visuals are immediately associated with Sonos. :) And there is very little difference as Long as you have space for it to ‘breathe’ a little.

    Thank you Peter for the great video! 1 quick question:
    1) You mentioned that during Trueplay, i should place the microphone of the handphone point forward, towards the Arc, do i do it right from the start of Trueplay, and i should just do Trueplay while being seated on the sofa? Even if i were to stand up and move around, i should just do it near my usual sitting position on the sofa and not move closer to the Arc?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Point upwards towards the ceiling when you’re doing the seated part of true play. When you’re walking around, point it towards the arc. You can walk around your listening area. Sometimes true play will tell you that you have not covered enough space. In that case expand the walking a little more.

    I know you said you should place the sub towards the front but what are the negative points if you put it towards the back near the sorrounds?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn’t mean there is a negative. If the room modes supports the blending of the sub well, then the placement at the rear might work well too. For me, the front of the room is where it works. And to the left corner where there is less open space.

      Peter Pee I’ve had it for almost two weeks now and I really love it. The sub by itself was a huge addition and then the one sl’s added even more depth. The only issue I’ve had is that no matter what I try I don’t get Atmos. I have a 2020 LG Nano 90 tv that has eARC and pass through but it still doesn’t work. Everything in my setup including my hdmi audioquest cables are all eARC compatible so I think it’s my tv. The pass through isn’t working like it should. I doubt it’s the arc because everything is working beautifully and sounds amazing. Just haven’t been able to test the Atmos which is why I purchased it so it’s frustrating 🤦🏽‍♂️

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be an LG issue. I’ve heard there were plenty of issues with a new firmware update and you might get some answers if you search in that direction. I don’t have a recent LG tv so I can’t help.

    Question: I plan to move into a house with a great room of approx. 20 X 25. Will the Sonos Sub Gen be a good choice?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. In a room of that size, you should definitely use a sub to supplement the sound of the main sonos Speakers. Just to be clear, the sub on its own doesn't make music ya. You need to pair it with a sonos speaker.

  • @wesleymostien
    @wesleymostien 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What about right behind the couch? With enough space around the sub but very close to the listening position? I'm curious.
    Or is in front always better?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find that a front stage is always better. A sonos sub has a tendency to direct attention to itself because of a slightly highest crossover point. So if you place it behind, there is a possibility that you might hear where the sub is, which means less than ideal integration. You should try to push it to the front if you could help it. But, really, in a pinch, anywhere is still fine and you will enjoy it.

  • @steviesteve750
    @steviesteve750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The placement is also important for phase alignment of the sub with the stereo pair, ideally it is reinforcing the LF radiation from the stereo par with no lag or gain. My old JL Labs sub had an infinitely variable phase adjustment dial just for that, I'm hoping that truplay does just that; i.e. to correct phase alignment of all speakers as part of its DSP capability.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How about the other side of the opening, does it face the wall? Ideally there should be about 6 inches of space between the hole and its surrounding. Facing is ok if you have 6 inches of space.

    • @kokhongfo6299
      @kokhongfo6299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The old adage is, subs are almost omni-directional, as we just aren't evolved to be able to descern low frequency direction (our sculls are literally too small) - you will get very minimal improvements by putting them close to your mid range and tweeters - but really for that cinematic feeling, having them anywhere in the room won't make much difference.

    Great video! It answered some questions I had for some time now. However, I have seen some people positioning the sub on TV stands next to TVs and soudnabars. Would that be okay as there are no vibrations ?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I actually never had it so high up before. When it’s on the floor, the floor actually acts as reinforcement to the sound for the bass to be stronger. Being higher up might compromise a bit on the output levels.

    Hey mate, I just bought this sub and am wondering if it'll be ok to place it on top of a TV cabinet? Position wise I could place it the left but it would be elevated by about 1.7 ft just behind the sonos arc which will be on the lip of the cabinet.

    Awesome work. Question for you - I’m tempted to wall mount using a Sonos or Flexson mount for aesthetics. What’s your opinion on this?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wall mounting for aesthetics are great. Just remember to perform trueplay again after mounting. For the Sonos arc specifically, it actually detects that it is wall mounted and alters its bass response to take care of that. I have not tried it but that’s what’s been advertised.

    First, really like your channel! Great videos!
    What about placing the sub on furniture, or using a wall mount?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooohh.. I have never thought of wall mounting a sub before! Well, first off, it's quite heavy so make sure the mount supports it. It doesn't have vibration so that is one less thing to worry about.
      If you are putting it on furniture, take care to make sure the furniture is strong enough to hold it too! But otherwise, I don't see why there will be problems.
      Oh ya, remember to give it some room to breathe! Don't close it all up.

    • @ohadzamor
      @ohadzamor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for taking the timeand addressing everyone's questions!
      This question came up because Sonos wrote that the sub is designed to be placed on the floor.
      I wonder if placing it NOT on the floor will arm the sound.
      There is the Flexson wall mount for the sub. It looks very good. What do you think about it?
      Placing it on tv unit is another option.
      This will allow more options for designing the living room, and will prevent the vacuum robot from depraving the sub
      How much distance would you recommend keeping between the sub and the wall behind it?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d recommend at lest a 4” clearance and if you can allow for it, 6”.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And Subwoofers are usually on the floor because it helps reinforce the bass for extra output.

    Peter, when adding the sub with the arc - does the sound re-disperse between the arc and sub automatically or does it just rely on TRUEPLAY?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be automatic. You don't need trueplay.

    Hi Peter, ended up investing in a sub gen 3 during the 11.11 sale. Was wondering whether the placement of the sub mattered as much if I am going to run trueplay anyway? And if it does matter should I do the sub crawl before running trueplay? Thank you in advance as always!

      I added a Gen 3 Sub to my Beam/One SL set-up. I just placed the sub that looked the best in my office (right side of LG OLED 55C1 pop up TV cabinet). I ran Trueplay and been happy with the sub performance since.

    I originally placed my Sub next to my entertainment console which houses my Soundbar. It was on the RH side facing me. Although it sounded fine, I thought I could better and after experimenting I have it next to between my couch(6 inches away from the couch and 4 inches from the wall) and a side chair perpendicular) facing the TV and Soundbar. To me it just sounds better.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That space is helping your sub reinforce the bass. That’s something that might appeal to quite a few users. If that doesn’t draw attention to The sub’s location, then it’s a great option.

    Hello Peter. I have been watching your videos and they are fantastic. You really are an expert in the subject matter. I have a question. Due to space constraint i will need to keep the Sonos sub laying flat just under the Sonos arc. Will that create affect the sound quality. I am planning to buy soon.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your environment but that will work. Bear in mind also that Sony did intend for the Sub to be placed on the side.

  • @JStruck88
    @JStruck88 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Peter! If you have a cabinet with acoustically transparent fabric panel on the cabinet door, could the sub go in there? It’s designed for a speaker to go in, but the sub would fit. I know they can go under a couch-so is this any different for performance?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the air is free to flow then I guess it's ok. You are certain that there is space for the bass frequencies to come out ya? Under a sound, there is space to the front and sides and sometimes back. It's not surrounded 5 out of 6 sides. So if your cabinet is really big, I guess you might be able to get away with it.

    If you’re going to face the Sonos Sub with the opening towards you. Which way does the power button have to face ( Left or Right ) ?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question and I never thought about it before! But because the construction (including the port) is totally symmetrical, it really doesn't matter. Either direction will work.

    I have my Sonos Sub positioned to the right of the tv stand and Sonos Arc standing up. Should the sub be against the wall in this set up? I have it about 10” away from the wall now and am wondering if against is the preferred position?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It’s not against the preferred position. I have it about 12 inches away from the wall too. And unless you are lacking bass, you don’t have to move it any nearer against the way.

    How does the sub sound on a cabinet shelf. There is no obstruction and only adds elevation. Does this affect the sound negatively?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The structure won’t affect the bass as the sub is virtually vibration free. But sub woofers usually benefit from being on the floor and having some bass reinforcement. It might sound a bit thinner if elevated.
