#Windows #SnapdragonXElite #ARMProcessors - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Microsoft threw down the gauntlet with 16 GB minimum. Hopefully, this will wake Apple from their slumber.
Windows needs 16GB, maybe Apple does not?
@@andyH_England umm ? who tho 16GB ram is physically 16gig of ram, yeah you can optimize your OS and use fast swap but 16gig is 16gig. idk how apple got this into peoples head that 8gb on windows is 16gig on mac, your average consumer might not notice it coz well swap exists, but any dev will 100% feel the nerf that 8gig of ram gives.
@@siliconhawk9293 Yes, you are correct. If your workflow is RAM-intensive, like batch photo editing then swap isn’t advised. You need as much RAM as you can afford. But for many of us that use the MB Air for office and casual usage 8GB with swap and compressed RAM can easily be sufficient.
Fr lmao 🤣
@@andyH_England 16 is 16, doesn't matter the OS you are using. since you will use 3rd party apps and that what will eat your ram.
since you will mostly browse the web which (the browser) will eat a lot of ram, 16 is optimal and 8 the the bare minimum, if you will browse the web and use another app besides the browser, 16 is absolutely necessary.
Can't wait to get a framework laptop motherboard with this chip !
I think it will be a few years before a Framework laptop can be found with this chip.
Might take a bit, but with upgradable LPDDR RAM finally being available through LPCAMM2, its definitely doable.
I don't mind if it takes them a few years but LPCAMM2 + ARM + Framework could be very interesting
Considering modularity is the main feature of the FrameWork, it is surprising that they aren't all over having a CPU option.
Really unfortunate they focus on AI solving non-problems.
try Linux on it
well 😂
Linux is the real deal
Isnt there only one two distros on arm ?
@@basdfgwe The major distros (debian, ubuntu, arch, manjaro,…) all have arm versions.
@@basdfgwe No, there is Arch, Asahi, Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu and many others
i LOVE how they put so much work into improving windows just for all of us to want to put linux on it.
Will be almost as good of a Linux machine as well, a nice Apple Silicon machine.
Might as well just buy a Mac
I've used Linux and it's nice but I still prefer Windows a lot more
"All of us" ?
Linux is "put" on 4% of home computers.
want the cpu, dont want the ai bs

We are talking about mobile chips, not energy vampire CPU’s here lol
@@GlobalWave1 Yeah. Sure. Except they said it's "the fastest". Didn't mention in what metric. So no, unless they tell us, we go with the default - raw processing power - it is not the fastest.

Thanks for another very informative and ilustrative video Alex. Have a great day!
its a great time to be in the market, so many CPUs to choose from and competition is on fire.
Choice and competition is great
07:36 X1E-78-100 Lenovo put that there on top
8:42 The 3.8 GHz multithreaded frequency is the X1E-84-100 SKU. 3.4 GHz could either be the X1E-78 or X1E-80 variant. The X1E-84 has a 4.2 GHz dual core boost (4.0 on X1E-80 and none on the X1E-78). The GPU performs 4.6 TFLOPs (3.8 on both the 80 and 78 SKUs). Those are the only differences between the X-Elite SKUs I’m aware of.
Thanks for the great review, keen to see battery life tests especially using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) running node on Surface Pro. I've been looking for tablet device i can do coding on the run and hoping the new chips can deliver on that dream that previous surface and IpadOS has failed at.
linux on those machines interests me most, go for it!! subscribed for your future updates!
Eager to watch your reviews about the machines!
Bro, have you seen the new Snapdragon Elite X dev kit mini pc announced ? 😱😱😱
I have yes, just about few minutes ago. Got on the waitlist
@@AZisk the new elite dev kit made me reconsider getting the laptop version and go with that mini instead. And for a new laptop maybe I go with an Amd strix point model likely being announced during Computex in a couple weeks. Then I get the best of both worlds to test against each other.
@@AZisk You're on a roll
@@LarsRyeJeppesenmore like a downward spiral 😂
@@AZisk -- when was the last time you fired up the ol' Volterra? Maybe there's some preliminary insight into how far they have made it with Win11 on ARM...? They put some healthy specs on that thing not that long ago...still, I put mine away nearly a year ago needing space. I bet if I could remember where I placed it & got it up & running, there'd surely be some improvement....(?)
Respectfully, they already fixed the translation layer a while ago. The testing on the Voltara hardware was useful, but that machine was still underpowered. If you want a better example of how that’ll run, do some tests in parallels on Windows on ARM. Parallels for WoA is entirely reliant on that windows x86 translation layer. It’s actually great already, and now the hardware is stepping up.
True, this site always throws hat tips to Apple
If only all of Microsoft's applications ran properly on Windows 11 ARM, but they don't.
Yes, I noticed that too. This guy had a negative narrative from the beginning of the video given that none of us have ever tried these laptops
Off-topic question I know but what do you think about Arc Browser?
I am quite enthusiastic in tech but certainly professional but i am still starting to love your channel! Can't wait for you to test these laptops with linux compatibility and arm chips of windows vs apple's arm chips. Moreover, i already experienced gaming laptop (still using now) and thinking of current busineess/work styled laptop with P varient of intel processor but I think i'll wait for arm chips for battery life as in few years i will go ccollege
YESS been waiting for this
can't wait to share with microsoft non ended screenshot of everything i do
haha. watch the lawsuits pour in
@@AZiskwhy you didn't mention that in your review tho?
are you saying that you are not happy to share your porn collection with Microsoft? or watch ads on OS you paid for, or the horrible performance staya gift us with?
And still using a Google account 😂😂

good video!
I'm curious how's software development on these pcs. I hate reviewers who only show benchmarks and not more demanding (ie. not browsing the web and watching videos) everyday tasks.
and those who only show video editing like the world revolves around them
Hopefully you use Linux if you're a developer.
He can use wsl, so he'd be fine.

Hi Alex. Cant wait to see the tests on the new qualcom processors. I'm working on a big Blazor web application with Visual Studio 2022 and I need a new "quiet" but powerful laptop PC 😉
Wdym Apples Neural Engine is walled off for Devs? We had access to it by using CoreML or did I get that wrong? Genuinely wondering.. or is it some other type of access that I‘m missing here?
How are prices going to be? The battery in my 13" M1 Air (with 16gb and 1/2tb) is yelling for service. I've been wanting a Windows+Linux ARM equivalent (fanless) but I expect more RAM and more storage and a lower price than the Mac. I'll also keep the Mac. Also are any of these Windows machines more upgradable than the Mac? And how does this affect comparisons with Apple Silicon Macs unified memory?
Wait for snapdragon x Elite laptop launched.
Can you test Davinci Resolve / Editing Programs on these Laptops? This would be sooo helpful. Thank you in advance. :)
What are the prices of the removable ssds for diy
Now can have MS screen capturing ur entire computer even faster and uploading to their servers.
And selling it to the CIA and FBI, so they can use it against you, when you politically go against their hellish plans.
Sounds wonderful
You know you can turn it off?
this is a question i’ve had since i’ve seen these new laptops… will there be an ability to add egpu’s? like a rtx 4070 egpu?
I only want to know if the fan is going to be loud, in particular the dev kit mini pc with X1E-84-100. I am guessing you are in for one...
Soo will it now do the updates faster in the most inconvenient time?
Besides the obvious tests of hwo they perform with linux maybe a dive into the ecosystem of ARM-ready software for Windows, what is available right now, what is expected to be adapted soon.
And maybe even the same for Linux, ARM support is a bit shaky here as well (specifically looking at ALARM) but also third party packaging isn't always available and docker is also often a gamble (though more common thanks to ARM server cpus). But still.
Great video, waiting for your video installing Linux on some of these.
Is there a way to run old x86 virtual machines, or is this Windows 11 (ARM) and Linux only? I'd hate to say "Hasta la vista, baby" to my old stuff.😉
Looking forward to testing the gaming performance - playing games on my m1 pro is good, but not needing the game porting toolkit might help with performance
where did you get the 150 dollar figure for X Elite? 8gen2 at launch costed 160 dollars and thats a much weaker mobile chip. Just curious.
Your mic setting too hot? But looking very much forward to what will happen with these new cpus. Very interesting
Yo Alex the Adobe CC Copilot+PC suite is it native ARM?
They're comparing to apple m3 air... Wouldn't be more accurate to compare to the pro line?
Please make a comparison between Macbook M3 and X Elite laptops!!
I see a lot of comparisons to Macbook Air.. are Qualcomm working on anything in the future to compete with the Macbook Pro?
Is there going to be more 2 in 1 laptops other than microsoft surface pro?
I do a lot of embedded programming like esp32 and Arduino. Would love to know if the serial drivers and such work on windows for ARM.
No one knows yet.
Do we have any infos for linux on those laptops ? Qualcomm seems to claim good compatibility but I'm curious
Qualcomm are already uploading patchsets into the kernerl source, so it seems to be looking really good.
Get in line - we all want Linux on these babies :)
Some of the previous videos I've seen about this they mentioned I believe Ubuntu was shown running on one and Qualcomm recently mentioned they are actively working on Linux support in their dev blog so it's looking good.
Docker?
@@nadtz Correct, Ubuntu already runs on it.
Cant wait for performance testing - i'm due for a new PC
Hey @alexZiskind do you think Microsoft will finally retool SQL server and SqlServer Management Studio to run on Arm natively? I use a MBP to code Blazor with SQL server in Docker and SSMS running (I assume) in emulation on Windows Arm on parallels along with native Visual Studio - SSMS I think is the best tool to manage my databases, it runs for a while then freezes up and I have to use task manager to kill it and start again - mildly annoying but not a show stopper - also do you think the 32Gb Ram versions of the new surface book will handle this stack ok? - love your vids
I don't think so, but not sure. SQL Server is a server product and they seem to be pretty focused on the consumer side of things for now. But I do wonder if it will run at all now via Prism. Might have to try.
i like your videos ! good quality ! and on the stuff i want to watch bizzarely
For testing, I want to know how easy it is to set up dual booting Windows and Linux. I also want to know if WSL on ARM is lacking anything compared to WSL on Intel. Also, how about trying to install older versions of Windows for ARM. And if that doesn't work, how about running older Windows ARM under virtualization from Linux? There's things about Windows 11 I find pretty unappealing.
I want to see ML benchmark tests using TensorFlow, PyTorch, and local LLMs with Llama3 70B. Also, I want to see how these machines perform with/without a power adapter.
It looks like most of these machines are limited to 16gb of ram, so don't expect great performance in this area. LLMs eat ram even more than the MacOS!
LLama3 70B wont fit even on the maxed out 32 GB machine considering windows will eat at least 8 GB of RAM and LLama3 70B will at least need 36GB of RAM. My MacBook Pro is the only device that will run it on normal speed compared to my 4090 that doesn't have enough RAM so its slow.
Apple Mx-series is better due to unified memory architecture. Also, according to Geekbench 6 benchmarks, single-core performance for most laptops with X Elite is mediocre - 2300-2400, this is level Apple M1 chip from 2020, mainly because these laptops come with X Elite X1E78100
Apple appreciates the free advertising !
Yeah your right. Other manufacturers have to stop using their name.
Everyone knows about their M series chips, so talking about how these chips are as efficient as those makes sense
exciting times!!! I've been waiting for a windows-based laptop that can compete with a mb, battery wise.
Test MacBook Air M3 vs Windows Snapdragon in CS gaming! how long the battery is holding hmm.....
How would windows arm on MacBook now perform in parallels, would it use the Microsoft translation layer
Microsoft had arm version for years now, the translation layer is to run x84 apps that built for Intel/AMD to on ARM CPU.
Yes it has used the x86 translation layer for as long as I can recall. I’ve been using Windows 11 on Arm through Parallels daily for over 2 years. Running x86 apps all day long. Obviously it’s not wickedly fast in this scenario, macOS (ARM) -> Parallels Desktop (ARM) -> Windows 11 (ARM) -> x86 app, but it is quite surprisingly decent.
@@BrockGunterSmith so the idea here that it should be now theoretically faster using the new translation layer
@@TheStallion1319 I think it’s going to perform really well. It won’t always be perfect, but just like Apple showed with Rosetta 2, ARM systems are really phenomenally powerful and I have no doubt that Microsoft and Qualcomm and spent HUGE amounts of money, effort, engineering and testing to make it as seamless as possible for everyone. 👍
Will it be cheaper than traditional x86_64 intel or amd laptop??
I use a desktop self-built. I am planning on an upgrade this year. Do I continue with getting an Intel/AMD type setup?
yes, especially because your self-built pc is much faster than this mobile chip
@@uranblut Thanks. I was just a bit worried of 'buyer's regret'
@Alex Zinskind do you know if MS Project will work in this architecture?
i don’t know. this is the first time Im hearing about MS Project in probably 15 years and Im surprised its still around. so my guess would be no, but idk for sure
really informative!
For upgradability, things looks not that bad : I've read HP and Dell propositions : +16GO : 150$, SSD from 512 to 1TB : +150$ and HP indicated a 2242 SSD. Yeah I would have prefer 2280, but heh...
The big question is, will windows be able to emulate macOS better? Right now, I have yet to find any emulation that is usable (everything I've tried is so slow that I'm forced into buying a mac).
I hope the surface pro will be on your test, as a game developer it's a very interesting machine (I have the surface pro 8 and it runs unity, blender, Godot, no problem) and the boost in power with the elite will be perfect to work on the go and do some design :) Thanks for this video, very nice and informative!
These machines are very appealing. The only real Achilles' heel that is left are drivers on ARM (if no ARM versions exist, you are SoL..at least on Windows. On Linux, that is not a problem).
In any case, it's great for consumers (and PC OEMs) to finally have an option other than Intel and AMD.
For hardcore software developer doing devops stuff.. which laptop would be the best?
I can’t wait to try it next week, I have the yoga with core 7 ultra but the battery life and heat issues are still unacceptable
I’m a Mac user, primarily, but I do need windows sometimes. I’ve been thinking about getting a Windows computer anyway, might give one of these ago.
I would wait on this, except you are a developer and just curious :). A lot of stuff won't work properly, that is for sure.
Also... Will they run SqlServer natively yet?
I'm sure you plan to test these things but just in case...I think the devices come with Windows 11 Home. Can you upgrade it to Windows 11 Pro? If you can upgrade to Pro, can you run Hyper-V on it? WSL2? Docker? VMWare Workstation? Basically, is it a pro(fessional) development machine or just a consumption device?
Interested to know when SQL Express will run on Windows ARM
Any news on the Apple M4 Extreme?
Technically, MSFT has been working with Qualcomm for a long time. I was there, the first bootcamp for windows mobile 7 (um windows phone...um...). That's already Windows architecture (a migration from previous pocketpc, windows ce, windows mobile, which is more linux/embedded like)
Regarding Tests. Apple M1 Max can do some interesting LLM work. What can these Windows Snapdragon devices do with Windows or Linux?
Please check how the music software will work, like fl studio and ableton (as far as I know they will work through emulation)
Hey Alex, what I would find interesting is why the Intel stock isn't tanking, since almost every laptop manufacturer now is switching to Qualcoms ARM chips and Apple has shifted away 3 years ago. I would expect some drop in the stock market but it is totally stable. Do you have any conclusion on this?
The samsung being the only one with the top sku, but only offering 16gb of ram is such an odd scenario.
Surely those after the top sku would also be after 32gb ram options.
Can't wait to see the real world test of this new RISC arm based for windows pc.
Which is a bigger waste of a button? The ai button on these laptops or the bixby button on Samsung phones ?
Does anyone here know if you can use the NPU for model training (in Torch espeacially). I dont think so, right? Also could you please please test the deep learning performance of these machines? Im looking for a new laptop for my work :)
Most likely not. Basic ai task at best. Get an nvidia gpu if need ml.
@@Codyslx im training on a cluster, just want to do debugging on device. Laptops with dedicated GPU are too heavy/too hot :(
@Barandur Look up the specs of the npu and see if it can't work, I'm no expert. I do know that if you want good results, nvidia card are the way.
- Should've been Windows 12.
- Options are always good. I can't wait to buy one of these next year used or open box for half the price.
Looking forward to your Linux tests!
Finally. Now we "just" need the software 😬
Please do test Linux and WSL2 🙏
(Also I hope they change the name, Copilot Plus PC is a bit silly.)
Thank you for this. Was looking forward to your reaction. 👍🏾
I only have a boring request which I think the majority won’t care about and that was to see how Microsoft Power BI runs on these machines. That’s pretty much the peak of my technical use case 😂
I run Power Bi desktop on Windows on ARM with Parallels on my MacBook Pro, bit slow to start, but once started it works as expected.
@@dgloverau yes, I’ve heard and seen reviews where it runs actually pretty decent on a Mac using parallels. It’s just that Mac emulation is very good isn’t it? This will be my validation that Microsoft and snapdragon got it right with their emulation engine but thank you.
Please, i would absolutely love to see how it performs when it comes to gaming, and 3d modelling/rendering, using blender precisely
I really want to see linux hardware support on these things. Can you test that?
I was under the impression that these laptops at least had some capability to upgrade the Nvme SSD, is that not the case?
I did want to add that the line about apples to apples comparison made me chuckle.
Yes it is possible to upgrade the drive. Both the Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface laptop keep their upgradable drives. Surface Pro also keeps it's drive door too for easy SSD access
Can someone explain the Qualcomm chips why not Intel or Nvidia and AMD
yes, but can it game?
Alex, I have a question for you, I’m about to go to college in fall but I haven’t decided if I should go for IT or CS, what’s your recommendation ? Thanks in advance
Do one pure science + cs minor
Battery life is a good plus but my main concern is how it emulates x86 and other legacy software because they is nothing like trying to use your laptop as a laptop only for the app to run like molasses or just outright not work
So what is the benefit if its not upgradable i think its same more or like macbook
Macbook they are from beginning not upgradable because there focus is on performance
Now intel also following th same path😅 with arm architecture more like silicon m1 processor
Can't wait to see if these work well on Linux! Qualcomm has upstreamed quite a few patches for Linux.. but the rest are still upcoming. So, we might have to wait for a bit still..
So is dual boot is coming to macbook ?
I hope hackintoshes come to snapdragon laptops too
Why there were no cheap version of this snapdragon laptop? Perhaps price range 300-400 USD? Or equals to Intel Core i3 / Ryzen 3 price laptop, this too expensive for me
I hope the SQL Management Studio Tools are also compatible.
Qualcomm is adding drivers to mainline kernel if you believe them, some parts are already in 6.9 but full support should land in 6.11
how does adding local spyware makes the system faster???
Definitely want to see if you can get Linux up and running and compatibility
Yay for competition!!! Macbook m3 pro 16" user here, and I'm down for it!
If anything, Intel and AMD will have to deal with the biggest blows here.
Actually Lenovo telling you the process model. In the detail page you opened it written X1E78100 in the processor row
Personally, I think if Apple hasn't started the ARM race then the rest of the manufacturers would not be interested, may be. Apple revolutionised this technology world with it's first ever M1 chip in 2020. Everyone should agree with this.
Is that 15 hours web browsing with the ad blocker on or off...
15 hours, only if you are using edge ;)
kinda want an ARM headless Plex set up. Something like 4-6 cores, 8-16GB RAM, low end video GPU, and 2-4GB SSD. Wonder what the pricing on something that that would be? Maybe running some super optimized Linux for Plex usage.
