    What gets me is I see so many people make big purchases and justify that new $700 truck payment, or $500 RV payment, or insane new home home mortgage and not really care. But as soon as gas goes up 25% everybody gets all nutty about an extra $150 a month in gas. The psychology behind it is interesting.

      Some people understand when the price of gas goes up everything else goes up. Its not just $150 more in fuel; everything that has to get shipped somewhere, (which is everything), goes up as a result.

      $150? when the truck has a 50 gallon tank, I WISH I could fill it today for $150. Imagine the Owner Operator hauling freight making $1.20 per mile and having to spend 0.77 cents per mile to fuel up. There is a lot more behind the price of fuel than filling up a tank. What about those who have a car that is falling apart, makes less than minimum wage and has to choose between putting gas in the car to get to work, or buying food for the kids? When fuel prices go up, EVERYTHING goes up.

    As an owner of a 3.0 Duramax silverado I consistently get over 30mpg mixed driving and while towing an rx8 (~3100lbs) and a 1800lbs trailer usually get 22mpg. Couldn't be happier with my choice of truck.

      Wait till you have to do the scheduled timing belt service at 150000 miles. Look it up. Worst motor design from GM

      @@tracyfry6818 No way. The worst design from GM is the 5.3L V8 with the cylinder deactivation. It's a 100% failure rate post 150,000 miles. Headers, lifters, camshaft, cylinder gaskets. The total repair is north of $3,000 at this point.

      @@tracyfry6818 It has a timing chain, what you're referring to is the oil pump belt. It's roughly a $1100 service. To me this isn't a big deal. Think of it like having to do a clutch. It's scheduled service, if the price of that scares you then you're in a truck out of your league.

    Don't be suckered by the current situation. Buy the truck you want that meets your needs. Fuel cost differences between in class trucks are miniscule compared to other costs involved in ownership.

      @@paladain55 Yes and I own 8 acres, a tractor, and a zero turn yet don't own a pickup. Honda suv that averages 23mpg and tows 5000lbs with our 12 foot trailer has done everything we have needed. 90% of truck owners don't need trucks.

      @@Back_door_bandit_98 I only tow 3500lbs at most. And that is less than 10 miles at a time a couple times a year. Vehicle is rated at 5k. Thanks for your concern though. I didn't need a penis compensator truck for getting groceries to the suburbs. Live on land and somehow manage without a 3500 dually truck.

    Any half-ton 4x4 truck that can get 18-21 mpg is a winner in my book. Considering 15-20 years ago, 8-15 mpg with a 4x4 was the norm.

      In my 89 f150 long bed 5sp 4.9l i would see up to 21mpg if i had dirt bikes loaded. Without i would see 18mpg. That was over a 4hr hwy drive. Was a great truck and motor

      @@TheShift1313 Yeah, I had an 88 F250 460ci for a while, and wish I'd gotten the I6. It got between 8-10 whither in town or on highway. I wish they'd sold a lot more I6's, they always seemed to disappear quickly if they ever came up for sale. Got rid of it 10 years ago though, they're too hard to find parts for, and find people who know how to work on them now.

      @@jeremyrichey4243 for sure. I had a carbbed 4.9l in my 85 bronco. The single bbl carb didnt help with hp but mad did that motor have tons of torque. I towed a car with it on the highway no problem with the np 4speed with no OD. The efi 4.9l revved put much better with the new intake design. I had a couple 5.0l and had a 351m 400 but always preffered the 4.9l in my trucks. I have a '21 f150 with the 2.7l and its been a great truck with great mpg and tows my 5000lb rv just fine through the mtns in nc up to ny. It would be amazing if ford could make a 3.5l i 6 ecoboost foe the trucks :)

    I have a 2020 1500 Silverado Duramax diesel. Bought it with 11K, and just passed 30K in the past 8 months. I have an average of 24.6MPG for the 19K+ miles, and generallyget 29.2 at 65 mph highway speeds. I've got a good amount of highway miles, but I'm a bit heavy footed when in the city. I've only pulled twice (9k lbs 32 ft. camper) in this time, and averaged about 9mpg (Ks wind). I'll be an eco-diesel fan going fwd until electric gets me the range I need on a weekly (weekend camping trip) basis.

    My daily for the past year has basically been a 2.4L Camry. I avg about 26 mpg. Not the most fuel efficient thing around, but it only cost $500 to buy from my mom's coworker, so I call it a win.

      Keep an eye on the oil level. The late 2000s models had bad oil rings and so those engines tend to burn oil.

    26.6 mpg over 50,000 miles (hand calculated) in my 2020 LTZ Z71 Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 diesel. Best 25 miles is over 43 mpg. Wow!

    2020 Silverado LT 4x4 duramax at my house. On road trips with no aircon, I see 30 mpg. Air conditioning in the summer and I see 26-27. Average at home is 23-24. People don’t believe me when I tell them those numbers. That little 3 liter inline 6 diesel pulls strong too. Plenty of passing power on the highway

      It's the cost of replacing the oil drive belt that scares me away from this engine. I'm all GM, but the cost of changing this belt at 150,000, GM'S suggestion. $2000 to drop transmission or even separate the cab from the chassis do this job. And ,
      .75 more a gallon over gas, plus the extra cost of engine.?! You gotta drive at least 300,000 miles just to break even.! Probably more since you have to fork out $1800 -2000 every 150,000 miles for this belt change. No thanks.

      @@daleliske9757 diesel is more than gas only in SOME areas, plus the resale value is insane on the Duramax, Im selling my 2021 LTZ 3.0, MSRP was 58k, after 22k miles, Im selling it tomorrow and got an offer of $55,000, we ran numbers on the exact same truck but with a gas motor, highest it will resell for is $52,000. No brainer if you ask me, plus its faster than any of the other engines aside from 6.2.

    Love my 2020 Gen-3 EcoDiesel Ram1500. I've clocked 32MPG round trip from Wheat Ridge to Silverthorn several times. Out on the flats of eastern Colorado & other plains states 25-30MPG regularly. Ram Longhorn 3.92 rear ratio gears. With these raising prices special ordering this truck right before Covid hit was a great move.

    I have the 2020 3.0 crew cab standard bed Z71 4x4... and this truck never ceases to amaze me... I'm roughly getting 600 miles to a tank which is nice because I only have to fill up once a week... my commute is mainly highway going 75-80mph going from about 5500 feet to 7k in elevation. I usually get 24-25mpg but I've gotten above 28 on longer drives

    I just bought a 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 LT trim 5.3L V8 with 8,000 miles on it and I've had a decent 18.9 mpg, mainly highway, but about 25% city driving. I haven't pulled anything yet though. Soon I need to take my mowers in to get serviced so I will get some time with a trailer then. Ive thoroughly enjoyed it.

      @@matthewerwin4677 If you can't handle snow in a front wheel drive vehicle, you shouldn't have a license. And few people use their Trail Boss or Raptor for its capabilities. The FWD Maverick will get you to the campsite just fine.

    On a trip from Baytown TX to downtown Houston, I got averaged 29 mpg with my 2018 F-150 2.7 2 wheel drive and also got 28.2 from Silsbee TX to Sulphur LA that was around a 65 mile drive.

    I have a 2015 F150 four-wheel-drive 2.7 L eco-boost with 145,000 km on it (yes I live in Canada). Over the lifetime average (and that includes about 50,000 km of towing), I’ve averaged 20 1/2 mpg!

      I've got a 2016 with the 2.7 with 45k miles on it and I get the same mileage. I just run 87 octane gas and tow a 4200lb travel trailer and dual axle landscape trailer. Absolutely love this truck,its been flawless.

    Almost bought the Chevrolet 1500 diesel. Glad I decided on the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost. Getting about the same mileage and dont have to put up with a diesel. Every fill up of 26 gallons diesel cost would be about 15 dollars more than gas. Plus the Chevrolet was 10 grand more than the Ford.

      @@JoseGomez-iq6hw Vehicles that are taken care of will hold their value, the Aluminum body on the Ford will never rust, the 2.7 ecoboost is a solid engine that, like any other will last a long time if maintenance is done as expected. The only 4x4 that drops that much value I am aware of is Land Rover.

      Truck dealer for 30+ years and have bought and sold thousands of trucks. Owned both diesel and gas. Best truck I ever owned was a Dodge with a cummins diesel!

    I wish your MPG tests were of a longer distance. This would help minimize any error in the pump etc.etc.

      This is kind of weird to blame the pump. If the pump is off by tenths of gallons the consumer and gas station would have a lot of issues to contend with. Pumps can be faulty, but that is a lawsuit if it's off by this much.

    I have a 2021 F150 with the 2.7L and I have done some of my own testing. The best I have seen was 27.5mpg while driving 60mph for close to 100 miles. I also have a 5000lbs camper that is 25ft long and have seen 12mpg with that driving the same speed(60mph). My truck is a crewcab 4x4 with a 3.55 rear end. Combined I see about 22-23mpg. These test were done when I had about 5000 miles on the truck. I'm very impressed with these numbers. I'm glad that I went for the 2.7L ecoboost.

      I have a 2018 supecrew 4x4. Mine also has the 2.7L. At 56 mph I average 29.5 mpg. At 60 I get about the same as you. I haven't towed anything with mine yet. People who have never driven an ecoboost powered truck will be surprised the first time they do.

      how do you drive at 60 without getting run over? we tow at 70-75 anywhere we go, provided there is not a lower speed limit of course. dragging a 28 foot camper to nascar races here in the south. the old 99 7.3 superduty gets between 9 and 11 mpg over the last 15 years and some 70k miles of towing. has 250k total miles and will likely drag that trailer till the end of time, beating ANY and all gas trucks towing.

    I figured up the cost of fuel for a gas truck and the 3.0 for my 90 miles of daily commuting. With the cost of diesel being higher per gallon, it came out almost the exact same. I haven't looked at any premiums that the 3.0 may have on the purchase price or compared maintenance costs, but it looks like for me, a gas engine that gets 10+ mpg less might be the most affordable option.

    I have a 2.7 2019 Silverado. Before getting bigger tires. My average around town was about 24 mpg. When I took my family on a trip from NC to TX best was 31 mpg according to the trip meter, average normal highway was 27 mpg. I have been very happy with the truck and no issue.

      That's amazing considering my Ranger only does 21 city, 22 highway. Granted it does have A/T tires that may be sapping 1-2 mpg. Does the Silverado 2.7 require premium fuel?

    2003 z71 with a 5.3 on reg gas.. averages 18.7 towing a small trailor on freeway, goes down for city. i have done 420 miles on a tank with enough gas to get to a station towing like this. paid for, everything works.

    When I bought my 2020 Silverado Duramax the dealer tried to talk me out of the deal saying they are new and possibly troublesome - I had 6 to choose from. Now with 26K miles and very happy with it so far - light on diesel, good towing power and no trouble - the biggest weakness is the soft rear suspension that is not suitable for towing. Average Solo 26mpg towing (6000 lbs) 13mpg.

      I'm very naive I'll freely say that, but why would the dealer try to talk you out of the deal? Wouldn't they want to be proud they made you happy so you would hopefully refer family and friends to them? I have so much to learn.

    At some point, it would be great if the towing test standards could be nailed down in terms of aerodynamic profile. While I really appreciate the weight data, the aerodynamic drag at practical highway speeds over time, makes a huge difference. The point being that the trailer shape and height really affect how much extra work you are pulling at 65 mph once you are at speed. That said, I really do appreciate the work you guys do to present real world evaluations. Most of us don’t buy a fleet, and most of us don’t buy such a wide variety, so seeing your results over the years has been very informative.

    I am averaging 24 mpg with my 2018 GMC Sierra 3500hd z71 4x4 diesel with a canopy. Daily driver. Low 19.5 high 27.8 I use synthetic oils. And Lucas in the axles. It's not a 1/2 ton but great fuel economy for full size truck.

      I wish I could believe this, but there is no way. I too have a 2018 3500 Sierra Duramax 4x4 with a tonneau cover and my all time best on a road trip running empty is 21 mpg. As a daily driver/commuter, it's 15-16 max.

      Depends on how hard you drive and how many hills, I work at night and don’t have heavy stop and go driving 58mi each way. I’m sure I’m going to get worse mpg if I were to work day shift.

      I guess it depends on your area, but at one point for me it would've been cheaper to run my '01 Duramax than my '03 Suburban per 1k miles. It's still very close, because while the diesel costs more it's also more fuel efficient, so I run the numbers when prices change to see which is better overall. I only fill the pickup every 3-4 months usually, it holds 84 gallons total.

    I drive both f250 and ram 2500 and I'm just tired of the noise on the diesels. I'm currently swapping between a 2021 Ford and ram and i prefer gas everytime. Gas engines when it comes to towing have come a long way. And I'm really loving the feel of the ram, it just feels smoother on the road. Ford payload is definitely better but they really need to step up on a better feel inside the truck. It just still feels cheap and plastic junk. But as long as it lets me towi guess is all that matters.

    No surprise: diesels have the best mileage! I’d HEAVILY consider one for a 1/2t I’m shopping for but added expense (of engine, maintenance, and fuel) is turning me off. Govt would do well to provide incentives for diesels like done for PHEV, IMHO

      I live in southern california and gas at Costco and Sam's Club right now is $5.08 a gallon and diesel is $5.15 a gallon. I have a 2015 ford fusion hybrid titanium and get 40 a gallon city and highway. My 2010 Ford expedition gets 10-12 city and 17-18 highway. I am luck if I can get between 250-300 miles on my truck. My wife takes the kids to school, sport games and practice and normal grocery shopping.
      I was looking at the new 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali diesel for the add mileage in the city and highway.

      Keep in mind the cost of the particulate filter and sensors. On a full size truck you will be between $4,500 to $7,500. That pays for a lot of gas. Sort of off sets the milage gains. Also today diesel hit $5.65 here, the the DEF fluid.

      Really depends on how you use your pickup. If just as a passenger vehicle and low mileage the diesel is probably not the best choice. If you have high mileage and or do use it as a work vehicle the diesel will be the better option. And one thing to keep in mind is the resale value. You pay more upfront but it also will get a lot of the extra value back when you sell it.

      90% of 1500 series truck owners will only be towing trailers that a Honda pilot could handle, anyway. They're not towing 32' travel trailers, they're towing a bass boat that weighs 3000 lbs. So yeah, go for gas mileage, get the standard tow package, and you're golden. Most guys who have to tow much more than 6k or 8k pounds regularly are just gonna get a 2500 series anyway.

    I would love to see you run the mpg loop (both towing and empty) with all the boosted truck engines on both 87 and 93. I would love to see the real world difference. Toss in 0 to 60 on both 87 and 93 too.

      @@tomg1246 Same here. It does TOW better on 91, and does run smoother, but the MPG change is nearly unrecordable. Now if it were tuned to run on the higher octane properly, THEN some increase in fuel economy can be seen, provided the right foot doesn't too excited. I had a 2014 3.5 F150 that I tuned and I did see a better performance and MPG increase, about a 30% increase in economy over all. However, the difference in price between 87 and 91(no 93 near me) still cost more to run 91, so no savings benefit.

      If anyone is wondering why 91 octane gives you better fuel economy, it is because 87 octane has up to 10 percent ethanol. Ethanol had lower energy output per unit than gasoline. The savings with 91 rarely make up the cost due to the massive spread between regular and premium. This is because the retailers can set their 91 to whatever they like while 87 is typically posted on the big board

    My '03 Suburban with 204k miles, 3" lift, and 33" all terrain tires gets 18 mpg highway loaded down (5 people + cooler + luggage) using 86/87 octane, 13-14 on E85 that's 50 cents cheaper than 87. Definitely going to stick with that and no payments. Most city driving is done on electric in my 2013 Volt, Suburban is for trips and work.

    My 2018 Ford F150 2.7 Ecoboost got 14 mpg pulling my wife's 2013 Buick Encore on a U-Haul trailer, both vehicles loaded, as we moved from Michigan to South Carolina. That engine never once burped, even through the mountains of North Carolina. This was in early June 2021.

    I enjoy the comparisons. I think it would help to add the axle gear ratio when discussing mpg, I think that would fully represent the efficiency of the power train.

      The importance of the axle ratio is reduced with the advent of 8-speeds and 10-speeds being standard. Most of the trucks in this video have very similar axle ratios.

      Double overdrives certainly help, however the axle ratios can very significantly depending on the build out...on the Ram you have options from 3:21 to 3:92 which has a significant impact on mpg. A simple statement of axle ratios would help to compare apples to apples

      @@philiph554 Ram is the exception, although these days, unless you special order Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with 3.92's, almost all of them that are on dealer lots have 3.21's. The whole point of offering diesel engines in half-ton trucks is to boost their CAFE rating, not sell half-tons with diesel engines and aggressive axle ratios. That means that the vast majority of their half-ton diesel truck production will roll off the assembly line with the axle ratio best for fuel economy. It's certainly the case with Ford and GM, who have have really narrowed down the selection of axle ratios and even when you can special order a diesel half-ton with a more aggressive axle ratio, it's limited to very specific trim/package/engine choices.
      They list the axle ratios on their website. The Ram 1500 Ecodiesel had 3.21's. The Chevy 2.7 Duramax had 3.23's.

      @@napjohn88 I think you are talking about the diesel on a HD. The duramax 3.0l turbo diesel is actually less expensive than the 6.2 v8 and maybe 1000 more than the 5.3 in the light duty GM trucks.

    High elevation actually reduces fuel consumption. With less air density at higher elevations, you can’t burn as much fuel. I can drive my 2004 Z71 Avalanche in the high country (8000-10,000 ft) and get almost 22 mpg. However driving it long highway distances in Texas or down to the gulf coast it only manages about 17 mpg.

    I own one of the Silverado 1500s 3.0 10 speed.
    I have 16,000 plus. I get 32 to 34 on the road in cooler times and in NC. Running highway speeds and 500+ to 700 + miles I can get 850 miles on a tank on the road. I get 22 to 26. Mpg in town driving. This is an awesome truck.

    I have a 2021 ecodiesel with 4x4 and the 3.90 gears. 26 average, towing 5000 lbs 13-14. Over 80 mph is about 25 and when I baby it 32mpg. I have put 25k miles on it in 10 months and is a pickup truck, tow rig, luxury car and an economy car all rolled up in one. I am just very impressed with it.

    MPG test should be standard across-the-board at least 100 miles for all vehicles. Why would you not have the same mileage for each vehicle? just does not make sense not to mention you only do short 50-mile trips

    I love diesels but problem is they charge so much more for that option it could take years and years before you break even. It's wonderful in my tractor. And being forced to use that def fluid also adds to the cost and is a hassle. Also I've seen that there are issues with the Nissan 5.6, I don't know if you heard anything about that. My favorite truck was my 1977 Jeep J-10 quadratrac, with it's 401 4b carbs. 7mpg city & hwy, Honcho edition.

      DEF is not very expensive. Typically, you can obtain it in bulk or from truck stops to very cheap. If DEF really bothers you, you can simply delete it. Moreover, diesel engines typically beat their rated MPG, especially on highways. The range is another benefit with a diesel you don't need to visit the fuel station as often. I think that saves you time.

We already pay more than Americans for fuel and there are more diesel vehicles in the US than Canada. That's probably why there is a premium in some states. Then you have differences in taxes. Overall diesel should be cheaper than gasoline because you don't have to refine it as much. Lately, the low sulphur stuff has added to the costs

      @@corvettez0695 you should do it. 30 mpg, 460 ft lbs of torque and 9000 lbs towing muscle. Durability testing shows the engine will last forever. Also the power delivery is much better than the gas engine. You're at 95 percent of peak torque at 1250 rpms. You never need to downshift or rev the engine when you hauling or going off road. Then you have the smoothness of the inline 6 which is balanced.

    I’m driving a 2021 RAM Rebel Eco-Diesel. I get around 21 mpg combined as a daily driver and about 14 mpg towing our Kodak 201QB travel trailer (about 5,500 lbs loaded). And the interior is just so plush… Over 18K miles and counting. Great info guys.

    I did some calculations on gas price in Canada compared to USA . Right now gas price across the board from coast to coast from $1.85 to $2.10 a litre on 87 octane, converted to US gallons that equal to $7.00 a gallon Canadian and USA price conversion is $5.47 a gallon.🤯🤯🤯.I have a 04 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 and I fill my tank twice in five days. On Monday I payed $120 to fill and it lasted me until Friday with 430 km to the tank and on Friday the same week fill up and cost me $112 so in total $232 in fuel in five days of daily drive to work and some outing of leisure.OUCH !!🥶🥶🤯🤯

    Out of the 3 TH-cam channels I have seen with the hybrid F-150 for long term, all of them show that the MPG is just all over the place. Sometimes you get low 30's, some times its down around 21, but most of the time its in the 27ish with no load.

      I was wondering on that 36mpg reading if the battery hadn't built up a ton of power through regen braking, because the 1st loop was towing 5,000lbs. I think if you are taking a 500 mile trip, you would theoretically get the same or even less mpg than the regular eb 3.5 because there's barely any regen braking, and you are carrying the extra weight of the hybrid motor/battery.

    I have a 2016 f150 2.7, (supercab, 2wd) the ending was replaced with a new second gen in 2021 (that is also 1 wastegate replacement, and three sets of turbos as well) and now have hit as high as 30 MPG, typical is 24-25mpg if I "hyper-milage" the highway at sealevel, meaning I baby my way to the speed limit and don't go over it too much if I don't need to. Lifetime both engines I am getting over 21mpg.
    Towing, highway speed limits fully loaded 6x12 uhaul, I got 16MPG

    I would like to see a mpg test on the Tundra using both 87 and 91 octane to see what difference there is if any. I know switching fuels and getting accurate results is somewhat complicated but if anyone can do it it's you guys!

    Turbo motors love altitude. When I went on trips to Colorado I noticed my mpg go up noticably in the mountains. Where I live is roughly 800 above sea level. I asked my buddy who's a tuner about it and he said yup that's a thing.

    So with that 2.7, 4 banger GM has in the Silverado that rumor is saying will be in the next gen Canyon/Colorado, it might not be an unexpected thing to see upwards of 26 mpg, given that it's a smaller lighter truck and has alot less drag

      How does it tow a trailer? With 4000lbs behind it how's the RPM does it tend to want to sit around 2500-3000 rpm at 60mph? That's about where my Canyon V6 wants to be when pulling my 7x14 v nose that sits 96" tall

    I traded my 2020 sierra at4 diesel for a 22 f150 powerboost. I got 23-24mpg driving mostly highway at 75-85mph with about 1k lbs of my tools and myself in the sierra.
    I get about 17-18mpg doing the same in my ford pb lariat. I knew the diesel was going to be more efficient, but I also knew diesel prices have been climbing faster than gas and DEF was becoming more difficult to find. In hind sight, I probably should have kept the sierra. It was very good looking, had the mpg's, buttery smooth transmission, very capable on-road and off, the fancy tailgate was actually quite useful, and the build quality/fit/finish was much better than my new ford. The only things that keep me from really being upset about my trade, is that the ford is very quiet, the 7.2kwh genny is appealing to my always be prepared attitude, the mileage isn't that bad, the securicode, no cost mobile phone access to autostart/lock/unlock, and something that shouldn't matter, but does to me - my vin # 1F vs 3G.

And i sold my 21 Sierra 3.0 lease for several reasons regarding handling issues AND i prefer a vehicle made by my neighbors in MI or Indiana given that i am in OH. Like you i did not care for a 3 vin number! Any thoughts on the 10 speed in thd ford versus the gm? I hear folks say the ford shift pattern isn't smooth? I reallh like he layout of tbe new f150 and if tbey offered the powerboost with HDPP option that is the way i would go. However In the 3.0 gm product the tranny was perfectly matched to the engine in my opinion. But if i decide on another one i will get the max tow as i prefer a stiff ride and want the heavier suspension and the higher numerical axles with max tow and i think it kicks you up to 3.42 versus 3.24 on diesel engines in the build process on line if in fact you can order a 2022 now? Lastly my gm got 3 to 5 mpgs less than folks who had the chevy version. I think the gm front end reduced highway mpgs. Again thanks for sharing your honest perspective on both vehicles sir.

      @@slmjake The Ford 10 speed isn't that bad, but comparing it to the 10spd in the sierra, you really feel it and sometimes you wonder if something is wrong... I think you're right about the sierra vs silverado. The front end, the air dam, the tires, and lift really hurt the mpg's. When I first got my AT4, I would follow behind trucks doing 65-70 and get close to 30mpg. I started noticing a lot of rock chips, so I stopped that :(. Another issue with my ford pb, is the 3.73 rear end. It's the only option if you want the hybrid. I don't tow often, so I don't think i'm getting any real benefit.

    I bought a new 2021 sierra 1500 3.0 duramax 2 wheel. Ran it for 400 miles all in the city. It got 26 mpg. And it's not broke in. May do better.

    I drive a 2021 Tundra with the 5.7 V8 and i average 15 city and 18-21 Highway depending on wind conditions. But Seeing this video and watching these trucks break 30mpg is insane and definitely and eye opener. I have heard horror stories of rams eco diesel but id be surprise to see how reliable chevy's Straight Six diesel is.... might be worth looking at

    My 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 HEMI averages 12mpg empty, 10 towing a 5x8 cargo trailer, and only 7.5-9 mpg towing my Jayco 23rb trailer. Horrible on gas but very reliable.

    2012 Silverado LTZ crew cab 4x4 5.3 with 3.42 axles, 22-23mpg cruising 65mph, drops to 18-19mpg at 75.
    Have it custom tuned with AFM turned off and just for 87 octane.
    City it's 14-18mpg depending on traffic and stuff.
    With ATV in the bed with rear seat+cargo box catching wind I'm 19mpg at 65.
    2300lb full windshield boat I'm 18-19mpg at 65mph.
    With boat and ATV I'm about 15mpg
    Looking to replace it with a 2022 3.0 duramax.

      EPA cycle has my truck at 21, so just cruising at 65 and not doing a testing cycle (which involves various accelerations, slow down, 75mph, etc), with a tune, 23 is achievable and believable over 100, 200, 300 mile trip averages

      @@MrMeowgi any mods on your truck? Drive slower on the highway, wind resistance (drag) is exponential and really starts to impact worse and worse the faster you go over 60mph. What maintenance have you done? Are you running ethanol?

    Interesting, This past February, I took a trip from Nebraska to California in my 2020 Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab 4x4 with Hemi 5.7 MDS (non e-torque) and the trip computer said 22.2 mpg there and 20.5 back. Went through CO along the I-70 there and back. Was quite pleased with the results but not sure I'd do that now with Biden's gas prices... 😆

      I drove my 2020 Ram 1500 E Torque to Florida from Minnesota in August this year and got 19.5 at average speed of 66 mph without a trailer. Pulled a 12’x8’x8’ loaded enclosed trailer back and got 12.5 averaging 64 mph. I was very happy with that.

    Fellas, I have a 2021 Chevy 1500 with the 2.7l Turbo. I was worried at first but let me tell you, it does the work. I have minimal towing with it but when i have no issues. I have loaded the bed down heavy with out a struggle. I routinely get 23 - 25 mpg per tank of mixed driving. Since I got the truck last April I have a lifetime MPG of 20.4. Per the truck computer. This is a sleeper truck that 90% of truck owners should be looking at. It just does not sound cool, but I am way over that every time I visit the pump.

    Best way to save money on gas is to not have a car payment. Buy a used reliable vehicle for cash and you won't worry so much about the cost of gas.

    I love my 2020 LM2 RST Silverado 4x4. 2 yrs on the dot of owning it n has 40k miles on it. I jus recently upgraded my wheels to forged 20x11 wheels wrapped with nitto 420 305/50R20’s. N I still get 30+ mpg’s highway n about 23+ around Houston. Cruising about 50ish rpm is damn near at idle on 9th gear hovering around 1100-1200 rpm. Only upgrade I have is getting rid of the stock air box for my own custom intake setup n the idash. I know the banks idash might not be fully accurate but from my data logging I got 499tq n 377hp max boost at 32.9 at 103mph messing around cuz it’s so damn fun n this truck. Waiting for the refresh interior n thinking of doing the trade or might not…. Still debating.

    Miles Per Gallon might not tell the true story of efficiency. Miles per dollar for fuel would tell you if you are really benefiting from running a higher octane of fuel or just wasting money. Around my area, 50 cents a gallon for premium is no where close to making up the difference in fuel economy.

      We figure on cents per mile. Save for DI engines, higher octane always delivers greater fuel economy, it doesn't always pay, same for running E85, which often does pay to run if the price is low enough, like now!

    New modern gas pumps are very accurate to + or - 20ml on 20 litres .

    The new trucks are insane. I had an '08 Impala that hypermiling got 32 mpg. If I swapped the Duratracs out for a more efficient tire on my '18 Silverado with the 5.3, I'd probably be getting better milage than my wife's '11 Impala.

      There are 2 wd trucks all over.
      They are just much harder to find now with everyone buying into the hype of you “have to have 4wd in a truck”
      I bought a clean used 2wd truck, I don’t want a 4x4, I have no need for one. Less maintenance, overall cost, better mpg, and it tows more. And with a locker has no problems driving in a 10” snowfall

    Regardless of what brand you prefer, If you opt for an NA V8 you are leaving efficiency and and fuel economy on the table. The fact that GM is offering the duretec in lower trims is great. I hope Ford and Ram follow suit.

    it would be cool to see some of the manufacturers experiment with diesel hybrid powertrains, high MPG and ridiculous levels of torque. the only down side is hybrids and diesels tend to be the worst selling engine options so who knows if any manufacturer would do it.

      @@jacobstrutner8232 Diesels actually are better for emissions for a few reasons: you burn less fuel to create 20 percent more energy, there is less processing required to turn crude into diesel and diesel engines emit less CO. NOx is a problem for diesel because they burn lean fuel to air mixture. The EGR, SCR and DPF all work to reduce the emissions. The problem is really with the particulate matter which diesels blast up into the air which gasoline doesn't have. I am pretty sure that soot is being created upstream instead of at the refinery process which turns crude into gasoline.

      The problem is in the transmission/motor portion due to the increased torque output of the diesel. By the time everything is beefed up to handle the power output, the weight alone would detract from any increase in economy. It can be done, but it becomes a wash.

    Tread VERY carefully.
    It's all fine and dandy while they are new and under warranty.
    When they start to breakdown out of warranty period it's going to feel like you're paying a second mortgage for ONE house.

    2021 F-150 XLT Power Boost, I typically get 26-27 MPG on a 20 mile trip out to my fathers, going 66 MPH. It makes a huge difference in my MPG vs. 75 MPH. Would love to see you run the calculations also including the cost per gallon into your calculations. I was originally thinking diesel but the higher per gallon cost esp. now made me change direction. I do also tow a 7k travel trailer and I average 9-12 MPG depending on the trip, speed again making a huge difference in efficiency. Great channel I enjoy watching it.

      I can get that towing with my 05 fx4 towing! And don't have to worry bout the turbo bearing burning out! My son has a turbo 6 f150! He doesn't even tow! If you're worried bout gas milage you might not need a truck! You might just be a yuppie with testosterone deficiency!! Most of these high end yuppie 4 door trucks are owned buy people that ran the price up for people who actually use trucks!! If there is a 'video screen' in your dash, you're one of them candy ass!! Let me guess, there isn't a gun rack in the back?!!

    I'm really curious about the 2.7 ecoboost. Looking at a new truck this year. I dont tow at all, mainly want a truck as a bigger vehicle for family and the occasional camping trip. The 2.7 from what research I've done is the most reliable engine ford offers. Not only that, but it seems to be the best balance in terms of fuel efficiency, power, and cost. I would love if you guys could review the 2022 2.7 ecoboost with the 2kw inverter. As always very entertaining video guys!!!

      My 2.7L Ecoboost was fast, fuel efficient when I drove it off boost and reliable. It could still tow 9,000 lbs if needed. I have a RAM Rebel 5.7L now, love the engine sound but it's definitely slower and gets very low mpg, barely breaking 13 mpg on the same route I would get 18 on my Ecoboost.

      Also consider the maverick. You may not necessarily need a full size truck, especially if you're not towing anything. It sounds like your niche is exactly where the maverick fits

    Those short mileage loop are not very accurate. You have to keep track of mileage for thousands of miles to actually get a accurate result. Not just going a few miles a putting in a couple of gallons in. The fill up can be off a quite a bit. Thanks for the videos.

      I agree, I went on a 40 mi drive last week, I reset the mpg to 0. The drive was 1/2 interstate at 70 mph and half at 60 mph on state highway. The dash mpg figure was 27.7. I don’t know whether to believe that figure or not

    As a professional tester I have to say none of your tests can be concluded as accurate. 1.) You can't use a gas pump fill method! You must hook up a 5 or 10 gallon test tank. And tank must be filled to rim at each refueling. 2.) Temperature and traffic movement such as braking for traffic, accelerating must be identical on each truck as well as exterior temperature.

    I think the base v6 gas engines still over all would be cheaper. Diesels cost so much more to buy and maintain.

      even with high gas prices, those diesels cost at a minimum $5k, and that would buy roughly 1,000 gallons of diesel. Even if you drive 25K miles a year, you would be 'in the hole' for several years before just breaking even.

BTW, Difference between 3.3 and 5.0 2wd combined is only 21 vs. 20. Also if it's about money, get 2wd and you have 4K for extra gas money, plus save the same 1mpg overall that you would get from having a smaller or base engine.

    I'm getting 24 mpg in my 21 Sierra Elevation. No highway miles, I drive about 70 miles a day to and from work. 5.3 V8 with 8 speed auto. I have about 16k on the odo. I keep my foot off the floorboard and relatively gentle take offs after stops. I deactivate the auto stop-start because in my daily experience it uses more fuel with it activated. I also try to keep my max speed around 58. I will say it does take some discipline to maintain that mpg but if prices are going to keep rising, it might be worth it. Really want winter to be over so I can break out my V6 Camaro. Lol

      Better sell it before the cylinder deactivation system causes failure. Watch all the failure videos on the GM 5.3 and 6.2 engines. When the warranty goes, so would the truck. GM will not cover any costs if warranty has expired even though they know it is/was a bad design. So sad.

      What’s wrong with using it as a daily driver when my diesel pickup gets better mileage than my car

      I bet we don’t see you calling it an “issue” that most of the Subarus out there are getting worse mileage than my F-150

    Tow mirrors will add drag and reduce MPG. I lost about 1 MPG when I put factory tow mirrors on my F150

    Glad I don't need to tow. My Kia Sorento fills my needs just fine and does solid on gas too as a plus.

      But if we're lucky there'll be a surge of small trucks again that are almost as fuel efficient as a sedan.

      Sorento plug in hybrid looks nice
