A little tip to stop the crust going to hard is to put a clean tea towel over it while it’s cooling , enjoyed watching from Ireland 🇮🇪 💚💚

I put a tea towel over all my bread after I bake it. I take a basket, throw a t towel in it, put my bread in the t towel in the basket and then toss the ends of the t towel over it to cover. I never was sure why. That's just how my great grandma, grandma and mother did, so I do. 😊

My grandparents were all from Ireland. Pop OBrien learned to make this from his wife, my grandma. He made at least 3 loaves a week for all us grandkids. This brought back memories. And I can still bake this from memory because I spent so many weekends in high school at Pops. I’m now 55.😂 Great video 🇮🇪☘️

My great grandmother, Bridgette O’Malley’s recipe has you adding the soda to the buttermilk and let set 15 minutes before adding to dry ingredients. It will bubble and increase in volume. Also baste the top with butter midway through cooking and when done.

Takes a very light and fast simple shaping. I make half the recipe you use and put it in a pie pan to bake. I'm 78 this month.

Becky... I left word in a comment in your last video that I’m sending you and your family an advanced copy of a book I’ve just finished and I didn’t know if you saw the comment.... it’s being released in May. You have done so much for me with you guidance and recipes and encouragement... and for so many other viewers too. I wanted to share this book as a small way to give a little bit back to you. It’s a book about a ten-year-old girl who’s left behind on the trail going west in 1863; she has a strong and sweet spirit, a determined purpose and a strong sense of doing what’s right. I think she must be a lot like what you were like when you were ten. And the verse you shared today fits the message of the book so perfectly. So keep your eyes open for “Prairie” ... It’ll probably be there in your hands in a month. God Bless you and your family. And ohhh... thank you so much for this recipe. So timely. So appreciated.

If that’s not an option... it’ll be available on-line through Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. Brown soda bread is the most common. Depending on how coarse the brown flour is, you can mix in white flour to taste to lighten it. Soda, salt, buttermilk and get it in the oven quick, no kneading, so the gas from the soda isn’t wasted. Cool in a tea towel to make a nice chewy crust that doesn’t break your teeth.

Yeah that's more style also.😊 Was brought up on this but this was too fussy using mixing spoons, just dropping it out on the top, give it a quick kneading twirling around with the fingers, not the palms! The 'cross' is made to make quarters to serve and I've never heard the ridiculous stories and the american "st Patrick' from Wales. 😒I don't think this lady's ever made an Irish soda loaf before. For those who are asking, the bread with soda needs an acid. One of the best tasting is buttermilk, BUT, for those who ask about milk and lemon juice ... it works fine.
A trick with buttermilk: Use it until it nears about 1/4 full and top up with whole or 2% milk, leave on the counter 8-12 hours or overnight to let thicken ... and put in the refrigerator. You're ready to go again.
