@@npcimknot958 I was rooting for him in the story aswell. We literally see firsthand how shitty all of the gods are, and never see any of them doing anything outside of their own interests. Why exactly is Gorr the villain of this story?!
The greatest problem with Thor L&T is it treated everything like a joke. Thor destroys temple- joke, Sif arm cut off-joke, Kids kidnapped- joke etc. The fact everything is a joke dramatically reduces the stakes and makes the film feel weightless.
I removed the scene from the video for pacing, but I actually talked about how the kids being kidnapped is played off as a joke and so there’s zero tension throughout the movie other than Jane dying.
It's sad that Marvel can't seem to balance the drama and comedy when it comes to their more out there characters and world's, like what James Gunn did for Guardians of the Galaxy. Almost like they feel ashamed of Thor and just turned him into a parody. Although, I feel like Endgame left him a joke without direction or purpose and this film doubled down on that.
@@Browntable 3:30 Kamala Khan more mature? Maybe he is retreating to his childish dude bro side because he literally lost everything and this is how he deals with it.
@@suezcontours6653 He brought this up in the video. In Ragnarok and Infiniry War, we got to see how Thor uses comedy to deal with his losses. And this was shown effectively. The problem in the new Thor is that they show this but timed it by 100. Thor doesn’t just use comedy, he becomes a full dumb child. He isn’t serious about anything, and it just makes him seem so out of character. There always needs to be a balance between seriousness and comedy, and this includes the way characters talk and act.
Can we talk about how Loki's death was also treated as a joke in this movie? Like the slideshow of all the times he died at the beginning for comedic relief, thor's back tattoo? It honestly made me sad, and I'm wondering "am I supposed to laugh at this? What's the joke? That thor misses his dead brother? "
Ik I'm late but you know what could've helped this "joke" somewhat land redeem Thor's character in this would have been that Thor deep down doesn't really believe Loki died as he has "died" so many times before and the tattoos and the jokes are all just his way of coping/denial, maybe culminating in him breaking down at some point later on. That his happy-go lucky dumb-idiot role he's playing is just that, an act. That's why he was with the guardians in the beginning, they're a family and he doesn't have one anymore, so he was trying to wedge his way into theirs. Makes the title of the film work a bit better to, building the themes around Thor's grief over his family: Love and Thunder. Idk, just spit balling.
I loved the part where I didn't go to the theatre and Chris Hemsworth himself came over to my home and said you look like you need some love and thunder. Really moving
I honestly think that fame is going through Taika’s head. He constantly flaunts that he doesn’t give a shit or doesn’t know what he’s doing, specifically with Marvel and Star Wars. As someone who wants to pursue film and take it seriously, having him go from being one of the biggest up and coming indie filmmakers to becoming a straight up hustler who does odd jobs for Disney really was one of the biggest fall offs in the entire film industry. This man really needs alone time for himself, away from the industry, and work on original projects. For me I’m just going to stay away from Marvel unless a project looks extremely promising to me.
@@aretzuu I think the only reason why he did it was because it paid well, or he just likes pissing people off for all the wrong reasons. I swear it's like a lot of these directors make bad movies just to provoke people but really people aren't mad at their project specifically. They're mad that they've invested so much time, patience, and money into a franchise, only for these guys, who have little to no care for it, come in and change or make controversial decisions on said franchise on purpose. Then when things don't go their way they start calling fans toxic, racist, sexist, homophobic or any other buzzword. I'm not saying that all fans aren't toxic, but I am saying that there aren't as much as people say there are.
Oh god, unrelated, but I hope this attitude doesn't spill over his current show he's making- our flag means death. I didn't really know Taika that much aside from Jojo Rabbit, a film I really liked, but hearing how he's made films that disappointed so many people freaks me the hell out. It will never ever be not terrifying to see a filmmaker fall off slowly, especially when you have seen them make great things.
@@elisemariechoi1531 All of his original projects (Hunt For The Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows, JoJo Rabbit, and Our Flag Means Death) have been good. He’s only messed up with marvel and most likely Star Wars. Next Goal Wins will be his next project and I’m hoping he’ll be able to come back from it.
The Guardians were underutilized terribly, especially Quill. Thor has lost the most in the whole MCU. And who would know this wound the most but the one team who's very foundation is based of loss? Instead of exploring, movie sent them away in the first minutes. Why Quill? His mother fell in love with a space man and subsequently dying of cancer. How did the filmmakers fail to see the parallels with Jane Foster?
@@Nemrai The 'Thor' franchise found new life when it turned into a pastiche of past decade's B-grade space operas in comedic tone, accompanied by a classic tune. What is that if not the Guardians' thing? Beneath the cosmetics, the characters share a similar story. Frigga's words to lift Thor off of his failures echoes the final exchanges of Ego and Quill. However, 'Love and Thunder' wasn't interested in any of that. The pastiche only feels faint and the classic tunes are less purposeful.
When you were talking about Thor not remembering that he told Mjolnir to keep Jane safe and thinking it was going to come back up, it made me realize a massive missed opportunity that would have added some more emotional oomph and character development at the end of the movie. Imagine if Thor did remember that and right before the third act when Jane was in the hospital, he told Mjolnir not to protect Jane anymore, so that she would be safe and wouldn't die from using the hammer, and then left to go fight Gorr. Then imagine that Jane came in to help later with the hammer, like she did, but it would be because some time after Thor left, she tried to pick up the hammer and it then deemed her worthy because she was willing to die to help her friends, not because she was using it to try and fight her cancer. When we'd see her pop up, we'd get to realize that it's because she was deemed worthy and we'd get to watch Thor realize that as well. It would be a nice end for Jane's character arc, showing that she had become a real hero and that she was worthy.
@@Browntable Thanks! Kinda makes me sad/mad cause I feel like there were a lot of moments throughout the film that could have had much more weight with some retooling. I've heard a lot of people say this, but it really feels like there's a good movie hiding somewhere in this but it just got lost somehow. Maybe there was an early draft of the script that had more emotionally poignant moments and flow but it was changed a bunch or maybe that draft just never existed.
Imagine being the writer of the original Gorr storyline making a serious philosophical take on the gods and their place in the marvel universe and then getting love and thunder as the treatment of your creation.
@Neil Deep this has nothing to do with the comment, because he said "imagine how they would feel" about what they did to their original work, like for example Miles Morales origin story was heavily altered to the Movie but the creator loved what they did
Thor as a character in the MCU is so tragic. He lost literally everyone, and then failed to stop Thanos in the last moment. He fell into a 5 year long depression and came back to redeem himself and save everyone. Imagine my disappointment when his main character arc in L&T was “Hammer or Axe?”
It was just forced humor by Taika. I get the impression he doesn't want to make serious movies, just funny ones but his humor isn't the best. The guy in this video says Jo Jo Rabbit was great, but I want my 2 hours back from that garbage.
Thors monologue to rocket about how long he’s lived and how many he’s slayed and how it is his destiny to destroy Thanos is maybe my favorite dialogue scene in the entire franchise. It captures everything about his character up to that point and it’s delivered expertly by Hemsworth. Sad to see that they’ve ruined who could’ve been the new leader of the next generation of avengers.
Wonderful point. I loved that scene. The elevator scene with Loki in Ragnarok was fantastic as well. Thor acknowledges and accepts that he and his brother are two different people despite his hope of them fighting together forever. The look of Loki's face as Thor is bringing up the past and the realization that he's responsible for some of his brother's pain is priceless.
I liked how back in Thor 2, Odin was overcome with anger and couldn't think straight, while Thor was keeping his cool and trying to come up with a winning plan. A reverse of movie 1, where Thor was acting irrationally, out of anger for his enemies.
Thor is putting up a front for Rocket and he has always been a bit of an idiot. he has always been an idiot and remember he didnt go for the head when it mattered most. not when Thanos is surrendered and weak but at Wakanda. just to be clear. making Thanos suffer will only piss him off; Starlord was right about that.
"You will be a wise king." "There never will be a wiser king or a father. I have much to learn...I know that now. Perhaps one day I can make you proud." "You already made me proud." The final conversation between Thor and Odin in the first Thor movie. Ragnarok had some great dialogues. The Dark World had some amazing moments. Wtf happened in TL&T?
Taika Waititi did not self-insert himself only into Thor. He's basically every character in the movie! He's cosplaying every character in a parody. That's what it felt like
Yep, I mean Taika was literally everywhere in the movie. It's bad enough he directed and wrote everything but he cast himself as Korg who overstayed his welcome and basically over-narrated everything, smh.
@@MayLily that's how you know Taika has a bit of ...an ego. Like stay out of it. I was hoping Korg would actually die but NOPE. Of course Taika couldn't kill off the most useless character in the universe.
I’d believe this take if it wasn’t for how Taika was still able to make a good movie (Jojo Rabbit) post-Thor Ragnarok, where there was no Disney involved. For me the only time it was truly Taika’s brand was the beginning and the confrontation on the astroid, while 70% of the movie is Disney looking at Taika and yelling “SAY THE WITTY THING, TAIKA!!!” for every character like that Bart Simpson meme. The same thing happened in MoM with Sam Raimi - you can tell which parts of the movie are signaturely his and which where the scenes where an executive had a checklist of scenes needed for a standard MCU movie.
Thor 4 should've come out after Guardians 3. I think James Gunn would've done Thor enough justice that Taika would be forced to respect the direction Guardians set him on.
I blame the Russo's for not giving Thor any purpose or direction in Endgame. It could have worked if they should have made him an overprotective king, and married to Lady Sif. Then in the 4th film he could have children of his own, and have to face off against Gorr. They could have set the tone for phase 4, but instead they doubled down on jokes and the next phase did the same.
False hope: Taika would just ignore it like he did all the previous canon and characterization of Loki. He doesn't respect anyone else's work. He doesn't even respect his own established canon; did you notice how Thor now has two blue eyes again? I'm a little surprised Thor even has Stormbreaker in this movie, because that was created by the Russos, but I guess the fact he could use it for "humor" had him leave it in.
Perhaps after the success of "Thor: Ragnarok", Taiki and Marvel felt Taika could do no wrong, that fans would senselessly devour whatever he placed before them. Sadly, after a stunning teaser and much fanfare, "Love and Thunder" turned out to be a BIG disappointment. You might be right: Taika did not care.
@@cameramike2515 Yeah and even then Thor 4 was unnecessary to Thor’s story arc and remove what made the first three good (I really enjoy them and let me have this one) and Thor’s character development. Plus removing Loki definitely did not help matters.

@@MARYWTHER This is a problem overall, whenever someone does something successful especially when it hadn't been before people get cult like and treat the director, writer or studios like they're infallible which makes All studios stay stagnant and stay with the status quo And I agree this Disney blaming is really simple headed thinking
It’s common practice for movies to have reshoots, editing, crowd showings to gauge reaction, and green lights after everything’s **approved**. Whether or not Taika messed this movie up, Feige and Disney released this movie. The fact there are similar issues popping up in most of their projects these days should say a lot. I think it’s a knee jerk response to the heaviness of Infinity/Endgame, and a stretch waaaaay too far imo. They went from comedy to comic book to live-action-cartoon-characters. It’s not a good look.
I feel bad for Hemsworth, I really do, he’s put so much passion into this role, he’s a reason why I love Thor, the fact that even he wasn’t happy with the outcome of this movie really shows how poorly made this movie is
that ike your opinion man, it was well made and fits with his character to me. there are two people casual movie goers and fans. it does not ruin hid mythos for me. he did well.
I wonder if he took this movie just so he could give his daughter a role there at the end. "How would you like to be in one of Daddy's big expensive movies?"

The Gorr comic saga is very well written and drawn and it really deserved better than this derivative nonsense. Taika is a very talented filmmaker and a pretty good comedic actor, but he's not good with superhero films (he doesn't like them).
lets all take a minute to appreciate Christian Bale in this film. he killed his role and was the highlight for me. he seemed like the only one with an actual storyline, a past, goal, pain, arc and character growth and finally found peace seeing his daughter before he died.

No way Home can also be considered a success but the only reason it did well was because of nostalgia from two other franchises. Nothing else the MCu has produced can be considered "fine"
Out of all the villains in the entirety of the MCU, Gorr feels the most wasted. Not even because he barely had screen time but because what little screen time he had was so captivating. It's like catching lightning in a bottle and accidentally dropping it
Loved how he ended it with "Thor the Dark World was better" and totally agree. TTDW actually had a plot that involved characters that mattered and dealt with them accordingly. Thor Love and Thunder just made fun of every character and reduced them to arrogance or stupidity EXCEPT for a few choice female characters.
Remember when in Thor 2, Odin was being irrational because his enemies made him mad, while Thor was keeping it together and trying to come with a plan that works, because he learned his lessons in Movie 1? That was nice Thor writing.
It's honestly not even just Thor, Taika didn't really seem to care for a lot of characters. Korg is just kept around cause we "need" jokes on a constant basis. Sif is brought back and given a sick comic accurate costume, just so she can not be involved and not fight to avenge the other Asgardians and only be seen again at the end of the movie. Valkyrie can talk about how she wants to truly be a great King for New Asgard and die gloriously in battle to reach Valhalla alongside her sisters, but make sure she changes her mind at the last minute because "Nah I got hurt so I don't want to die in battle anymore I guess".
I was seriously waiting for Sif to return since AoS and Thor 2, and she’s just wasted like that, I gave a pass of the Warriors 3 cuz I didn’t care about them like that, but Sif…..unforgettable, I love her….now she’s an amputee as a joke
I blame the Russo's for not giving Thor any purpose or direction in Endgame. They should have made him an overprotective king, and married to Lady Sif. Kenneth Branagh the director for the first Thor, set the stage for such a wildly different story then the other marvel movies at the time. He set the stage for an Shakespearian Opera, and that's what Thor should have been. An opera, an Epic, like the epic poems of old. Like idk....the Edda? You know the basis for the entire mythology of Thor! The dark world was...boring and forgettable. I can only remember bits and pieces. I understand that Marvel wanted to save Thor as a franchise, and that's why they hired Waititi, but I wish they had hired a director known for directing grand operatic fantasy narratives like Peter Jackson. Could you image a Thor anthology the likes of the minds behind the Lotr movies? I feel that the first 3 movies, and infinity war were Thor Odinson's story, but this should have been the beginning of Jane Foster's story as Thor, a new trilogy or duology. There were some genuinely good moments among the garbage that is Love and Thunder, which only serves to disappoint me more, because I see what it could have been.
Dude a whole Thor franchise with LOTR vibes would be amazing! I loved serious Thor. I mean isn't that what he should be? He's not from earth, he shouldn't have nor talk they way we do..
YES YES YES. The reason Jane feels like she should be the main character in this movie is because they're adapting a comic book about her and only her. They took Jane's story and condensed it into a subplot of Thor Odinson's movie. Now maybe this is just a precursor to a sequel where she does get to be the main focus, but nope they killed her. Absolutely ridiculous.
Movie should've been The Death of Jane Foster Storyline but replace Mangog with Gorr. Thor isn't around, he's with the Guardians or something, and Jane has to step up. Becoming a God who challenges Gorr's entire worldview.
Maybe it's denial, maybe it's blind hope, but the post-credits scene did show her (and Heimdall) enter Valhalla, so Marvel *could* bring Jane back way down the road. It seems to me like her arc could continue, and I hope it does.
What’s really annoying to me is that. Taika literally warned us in 2019 to expect disappointment from him. And he will ruin a lot of material. Recently he told the fans he refuses to read more comic book material because he believes he can do a better job compared to the actual creators! This guy to me sounds like a piece of trash.. He told us he would ruined it and he did acknowledged that he refuses to do his research. Then makes fun of the actual effects from the movie?? He’s literally making fun of his coworkers working hard to make the movie look at least good…… if you ask me this guy is nothing but disappointment of life!! Taika has no right at all to get in the face of fans criticizing his own film when he actually told us he was going to ruin it and be disappointed in him!! Bruh WTF?! 🤨
That montage was so good! It made Thor come across as someone who has lost so much and throughout his journey managed to find his way back to where he started, a God with immense power capable of such greatness. That edit made him feel like a legend!
Dear Takia Waititi and Kevin Feige, Thank You for wasting Christian Bale’s Gorr The God Butcher, we could have easily seen Gorr go after more Gods and even attack Omnipotent City and kill Zeus. You both need to actually listen to feedback and criticism and ask better questions. Sincerely, Plenty of MCU fans
Tbh I just want these movies to feel like they’re striving to be a great movie / story.. since Endgame they’ve felt more like a Disney product than the charm they had pre- Endgame
Do not shit on Feige lol. He clearly cares more about the MCU than anyone and I highly doubt had that much supervision over this consideration the bizarre amount of MCU media being published
@@danielz-v4083 He may care, but he's not the only one that built the MCU. Paramount helped make some of the movies. Jon Favareau helped set the stage. Even other people higher up helped. Not just Feige. Most of the others left. All that's left is people with different agendas.
@@firstlast9846 Endgame was the problem. They doubled down on jokes. Ruined Thor and Hulk by not giving either of them any purpose or direction. I have no doubt Taika is a good director/clever writer and I imagine working on films like Ragnarok and L&T is a great learning experience for any filmmaker. But I sincerely, VERY MUCH hope that he does not return for Thor 5. Unless he has a story for the character that he's emotionally passionate about, I think he's better off making original scripts.
-Hero with Cancer Story -Thor and the freaking GoTG (best combo possible) -GORR -CHRISTIAN BALE -Thor’s mental health healing -Gods real explored -Eternity -the first 4th movie of a main character for the MCU Literally, all phenomenal plot elements that were utterly wasted and dragged to the ground because a great director felt like not giving a shit and taking a piss. Seriously, it makes no sense at all. It’s like Taika actually tried to make this movie shit and fully sabotaged it. The humor could’ve been so good but it was just cringe and boring humor. Also I cannot believe that Jane line at the end “first it’s mighty Thor. Second, if you can’t say might Thor I will also accept Dr. Jane FOSTER! And thirdly: EAT. MY. HAMMER.” Actually made it in a 2022 blockbuster movie. My bet is that Kevin Feige didn’t glance at this movie and just trusted that Taika wouldn’t make a pile of garbage
Yeah, like if they wanted to make a comedy, why use Gorr the god butcher as the villain? A good, and effective story that uses him, should have a more serious tone. It should give Thor exposure to both the actions of other gods, and his own actions. Gorr may be the villain, but the take away should be that, his actions were a response to the treatment of mortals and worshipers by the gods. Not all of them are evil, but same remain neglectful, and don’t use their power to help those who need it the most
@@tyrontheconqueror6625 Yup. Plus the comics really go into how despite Gorr being a maniac he has a point, like even Fury agreed with him. The movie with it's weirdly short runtime could barely do this cuz of other plotlines.
So I ended up rewatching Thor 1 & 2 so I can show my friend who had never seen the first two Thor movies before he and I watch Thor: Love and Thunder for the first time. Honestly, I forgot just how good The Dark World was. Is it perfect? No, but it balances serious tones and humor far better than Love and Thunder. It's also shows a Thor that has grown. He's far more competent, his dynamic with Loki is fantastic, and he's the best heroic version of himself. He was more level headed when his own father was angry. He's more selfless and shows how he's changed since the first movie. Like when Volstagg slammed his mug down and said, "Another!". While Thor sat his down on the table. Or when near the end he said he'd rather be a good person than a great king. That was the proper progression of his character and I loved that so much. He was respectful, honorable, strategic, cleaver, and willing to do whatever it took to help others. He also humbled himself. That was the Thor that felt like he was worthy of Mjolnir. Were there other problems with The Dark World? Yes, but the tone and how Thor's character was handled I thought was great. It's by far my favorite Thor movie and my favorite version of Thor in the MCU.
people hated the dark world because it didnt feel like a marvel movie and it came out during a time of peak mcu. now you can all look back and go "wow, we were so wrong now that we know how bad it can be"
That's one thing I was confused about. Thor wants Mjolnir back so badly in this, but in endgame, when Cap has Stormbreaker, Thor says "No no give me that. You have the little one." And just tosses Mjolnir away.
My guess is he wanted the assurance that he was still worthy (he did do the same thing when he called to Mjolnir during the time travel segment in Endgame)
This one is personal because I am a fan of Taika’s work. And I know the guy knows how to make a good movie. He’s really good at combining drama, action, and his unique blend of comedy within all of his films. Whether it’s JoJo Rabbit, What We Do in the Shadows, and in this case the Thor he himself directed before this, he’s always good at making it all come together. And it is so hard to accept that this same guy directed this. It’s completely unrecognizable to the work he’s done before and it’s beyond frustrating.
@Callus Linde Yes, we do. But, I agree that with Disney sterilizing everything they had due to mandates from BlackRock, you get a point. Taika Watiti works well with dark humor, something Disney is very allergic to and shouldn't be mixed with them.
One big issue that I had is that this version of Thor is so dependent on Loki being in the films as some sort of motivator (even as a dead person) that without him Thor has no real purpose or function. It's like they are joined together inextricably and once that story line was resolved so was Thor, and so all you have in LandT is a professional actor doing jokes on purpose to get a rise out of you instead of a motivated character. I think this should have been a Jane-Thor movie honestly and Hemsworth should have joined the Guardians.
I know you said that the Korg thing was a bit, but let's be honest here, it's WORTH being that mad at what they did to Korg. He was originally a character from an enslaved race that is haunted by the memory of being forced to murder his brother in gladatorial combat, and yearns to have the slave disc removed from his chest. What Waititi did to him is so beyond inexcusable and lazy, that anger at this self-insert BUTCHERS every character moment and arc that MADE this version of Thor WORK, feels like the only reasonable response.
Taika Waititi's interview just really nails why I don't really like his Thor films or the MCU as a whole. Why work on an adaptation of a character and artistic medium you neither like nor respect.
Probably because it gives him artistic freedom and funding to do the kind of films he's actually interested in. But either way, it's so obnoxious and disrespectful to see him bragging about how much he doesn't care about Thor while making these films. Taika let that Oscar win go to his head and now has a massive ego.
@@Missjunebugfreak I agree, but it doesn't explain Marvel/Disney/Feige's approach that these (basically) unknown filmmakers are given such characters of importance at least in the mythos. Every once in awhile. an unknown talent can give you a great piece of work using known IPs. But because the studio has built and adhere to such rigorous template to make their films, artists hired bc they have a unique vision is never really really allowed to express that. Don't get me wrong, that can actually be a good thing (note Rian Johnson and his Star Wars film), but to me it seems its more misses than hits recently.
Yeah it’s really disappointing. Taika could have learned a thing or two about story and characterization if he has bothered to read some of Simonson’s run.
I actually really don't like the Thor Ragnarok movie and so confused when everyone liked it. After this mess of a movie happened, I can finally tell this opinion to everyone
@@RX552VBK yeah, it’s similar with Star Wars. The reason the sequels caused so much controversy, it wasn’t due to all the political bullshit, that’s mostly a distraction, it’s because it’s 2 people making the movie with VERY different views on what it should be, like they’re in a speeding car fighting over the steering wheel. This is why if you have multiple movies, only have ONE director, for the WHOLE thing. Of course this shouldn’t apply to the MCU, but maybe have one person direct all the Thor movies.
After watching Love and Thunder, I had to go back and watch Ragnarok because I though “was the last one really this bad too? Was Taika always a bad filmmaker and careless about this franchise?” So I watched it and it was still fucking amazing. It was hilarious but still had genuine stakes and an arc for Thor. Love and Thunder was just really dissapointing
Yes, Ragnarok was trash and that is something ironic and actually funny. Everybody who has no brain cells or care about the source material loved Ragnarok, they are given more of the same garbage and they complain. They are hipocrites with bad taste.
@Frog Man THAT EXPLAINS IT. I was wondering how he managed to make Ragnarok good and LandT so bad. Now I know. At first, I thought it was just because he had some people keeping him in check in the first, then they said "he's got it down pat" so they let him do whatever he wanted in the second. (I guess that was true in the end but I ddn't know there were separate writers).
@@destinyhntr Ragnarok succeeded DESPITE Waititi's direction. His self-insert nonsense stopped it from being great. As it stands, Ragnarok is only OK. Get rid of Jeff Goldblum. Make Hulk the Hulk. i was not loving it, but when korg said “it’s korgin time” i was moved to tears. i bought rocks and made a statue in my front yard. truly, honestly, a movie of all time.
I actually believe this movie was Taika Waititi's drunk revenge on detractors of Ragnarok because it wasted so many things: -Christian Bale and Natalie Portman -Jane as the Mighty Thor -Thor and GotG duo -Thor's arc -Zeus -The god world, I imagine a team up of a lot of deities from many cultures to defeat Gor would have been cool
I really wish it had the serious tone that Thor Dark World had. Yes, it was disliked, but its atmosphere if done right would have made Gorr arc to much better. It would have been cool if they had made him close to his comic book levels of power.
They should have made Thor at about the level of light hearted he was in ragnarok, contrasting the bleakness caused by gorr, that would made it an interesting dynamic
Thor peaked in Infinity War for me. He was the perfect blend of bathos, pathos and heroic epicness who was a natural evolution of his Ragnarok self. Only the comedy wasn't used to show how irreverent both Thor and the director were like Ragnarok and L&T but to hide the pain he felt from losing the people he loved; the bathos strengthens the pathos. Taika is usually praised for this in his other films, only he seems to drop this once he's making Marvel movies because he just doesn't seem to care, almost like he views comic-books and CBMs as inferior and fans taking them seriously is inherently silly. So he makes sure to let you know this at every turn in both films.
I disagree with you on 'Ragnarok'. Markus and McFeely of 'Infinity War' only took notes of Waititi in 'Ragnarok' when Thor was in their hands. 'Infinity War' was when the facade of humor cracked, but 'Ragnarok' was where he adopted it. Yes, it was a silly movie, but only by embrace. Yes, it borders on parody, but the affectionate kind. Waititi wasn't just praised for it in his other films, it was his style; his distinction. 'Love and Thunder' see this style vanish with no trace. The comedy didn't just disrupt any potential meaning, it's not even funny.
As a SW fan,God no! I've got enough of these Disney products trying to bait us and make them money Even if Ahsoka ended up decent or really good I still have flashbacks to Kenobi and Boba Fett series...
I feel so bad for Thor, he's currently the one with the most tragedy in his life in MCU -- even more than Spider-Man IMO, imagine that -- but the stories they give him is either too pretentious or too stupid to hammer it in to the audience. In my opinion, the best Thor is the one in Infinity War. Just dig down on that and make a Thor movie where he copes with all his loss. Dammit, man...
I don’t like how SLOWLY infinity war is being undone.. Loki is back, Heimdall is back, Vision is back, Gamora is back, Thor’s eye, hair and hammer are back.. death and loss feels meaningless now as it does in comics.. Thor would’ve felt more battle-scarred if he still had his eye patch and short hair - so we could see growth from Thor 1 to post Endgame
@@firstlast9846 they needed to show Thor maturing as time went on, and show that he learned from the lessons of the previous films. Endgame very much regressed him, and left him with no purpose of direction. Should have made him an overprotective King, and married to Lady Sif. Then in the 4th film he has children of his own, and also has to face off against Gorr. Making it darker and more serious to payoff the emotional depth required for a character like Gorr.
To me, Thor have been consistent from 'Ragnarok' to 'Endgame'. They may have been a little too loose on the jokes for the latter, but it was tolerable. To me, it was still a strong arc and it was genuinely interesting to see what holds for Thor's future. And this movie is it. Everything that was built up was tossed aside, even the development Waititi himself set in 'Ragnarok'.
i agree with most of your points here, but the idea that korg being removed from love and thunder would change nothing is flat out wrong. if korg was absent from this movie it would be significantly better.
Yeah I mean the film is already unbearable , and they added korg to the movie And it makes the movie more cursed to watch for me . Seriously rn , the only mcu phase 4 content that i liked is Shang Chi , Eternals , and Ms.Marvels , and even that 3 content isn't enough for getting my faith to mcu back .
@@m.syauqiabdurahman2798 Or yknow, no narration. Movies can be self-explanatory, no need for someone narrating the stuff happening in the story. It's weak. Also, maybe that's just me, but I'm really tired of Taika's constant self-inserts in his own projects. Every project he's directed or written, he's been starring in it...
imo all of christian bale's scenes were really great. his character had a great design, and christian bale is just amazing, honestly the scene where he captures all the other characters and almost kills valkyrie and jane is genuinely chilling. he had great scenes, but in an otherwise bad movie, and it's sad, because he could've been a really cool villain for a movie that did him justice.
One thing I do wish for Thor was something like Earth’s Mightiest Hero, someone who’s wise and can have his immature moments. That Thor had his moments where he was was either truly something of a god and also a human, which is the same story I feel that the first Thor was doing and could’ve build upon. Have him actually become King and realize how something he tried getting over in the past is now something he has to accept. Edit: One thing I also don’t like about MCU Thor is the drastic change from being a mythological figure to a space venturing Viking, there should’ve been a better blend of this but it honestly feels like there’s two different Thors in one universe and no I don’t mean Jane.
I agree. I feel like Endgame regressed Thor to the point where he needed to find himself again, over 20 films in. That's bad storytelling. He needed to mature and embrace his role as King like Ragnorak set up, especially after learning of the importance of Asgard as a people and not just a place. Instead they made him into a joke.
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp I think it would have great if Thor 4 was about finding a home for his people to live in. Like, how are the residents of New Asgard feel about living on Midgard? Is the government intimated about this influx of Asgardians? Is there a cultural divide between the Norse folk and the remaining Asgardian folk? I blame Endgame for just time skipping that much story potential that could make for an exciting Thor film.
This movie absolutely DESTROYED Thor’s character. He used to be serious, but also comedic and witty when it was appropriate. Every time you’d see him on screen fighting you’d get chills. Now he’s become the laughing stock of the MCU. And for some reason they made Jane’s character the serious one in this movie when we haven’t even see her in the MCU in several years and all of a sudden she’s worthy enough to weld Thor’s hammer because she has CANCER?! Also why did they bring up cancer in this movie when that is literally such a dark topic and this movie was not serious whatsoever. I was also extremely disappointed with hardly seeing Gorr who is supposed to be one of Marvel’s most powerful villains and we barely even saw him fight let alone killing thee Gods despite his name being “The God Butcher.” Shame Taika Waititi who put literally no effort in this multimillion dollar film.
@@neow6289 True, but the OP thinks it's weird that she can weird mjolnir solely because she has cancer. It sounds strange, but it's not Taikas fault, it's from the comics
Taika is in that dangerous time for directors, where they’re told how great and wonderful they are, and they forget how in their earlier, great works, they weren’t so arrogant. Ask m night, Lucas, Spielberg, etc, etc, etc. So many greats went to hell, and started squatting out crap. Come back to us Taika!!!
Of all the people you could have mentioned, you really mentioned Spielberg, a director known in the craft for his humility, still winning accolades and having been a serious contender for the latest Academy Awards?
@@roxtechs Definitely undeserving of the level of hate it has. It's nowhere near as terrible as people make it out to be. It's quite fun and Harrison Ford in his 60s still delivered some great action sequences.
Honestly, as a big Branagh/Shakespeare fan, I really liked the first Thor movie. It did all the heavy lifting as the first really fantastical Marvel movie. And I honestly think it was Branagh who gave us the Loki we know and love. I honestly liked the fish out of water, but still straight-man Thor, more than "everything is a dragged out comedic routine" Thor.
This is what I kept saying but always been drowned out by comedy fans who wanted the Shakespearean out the window ASAP Kinda makes me glad Tom's Loki is no longer in this timeline
Honestly if it gave us more cosmic and Norse stories and left earth alone it would of been cooler. His sense of humour was fine in everything before Rag. He could take a joke but can be serious when the time called for it the first version of Loki was the one I liked.
the first thor is the worst movie in the mcu. outside of thor 2 and iron man 2. how can you watch a movie that only uses dutch angles the whole film. shakespirian can be cool, but that movie is sleep inducing . thor 4 is mid, but still far better than the first 2 thor movies
The first director from Thor 1 aka Kenneth Branagh needs to come back directing Thor movies again from now on because he understands Thor's character and his mythology way much better than Taika Waititi ever will.
Exactly, he understood Thor and knew just what to do with him. Honestly, I feel even if he does come back, Marvel/Disney will just interfere and mandate he make Thor more comedic.
The first Thor is my 2nd favorite Thor movie. It had great character development for Thor, Thor's journey and what he wants is clearly established, Loki was the first great villain in the MCU. Really my only problem with it is the forced relationship between Thor and Jane. If Thor and Jane remained just as friends at the end of the movie so that they could develop feelings in the sequel the first Thor would've been my number 1.
@@Lightning08Xx Well, he always ends up with Lady Sif or Enchantress in the comics. So i kind of wish they had established a greater relationship with one of them.
The cast was top tier and I will always love that they cast Chris Hemsworth as Thor, but enough is enough. I blame this on Taika for not even trying to make a good balanced Thor movie and Kevin Feige for not reigning him in. Like for comparison- for all the jokes that GOTG always have, at least James Gunn knows how to balance it out, SMH.
if he was able to make the Guardians down to earth and relatable just imagine what he’d have been able to do w Thor. Wish guardians 3 had come out first w/ Thor in it rather than Thor w guardians in it. I trust James Gunn like I trust the Russos.
Some of it is also Hemsworth's fault as well. He desperately wants to do light or slapstick comedy more. All actors that "look" a certain way are usually typecasted. So many like Brad Pitt look for scripts that have some level of comedy or dark humor in them (Bullet train). Gosling is going for the light fare as well, while actors that started in comedy like Ryan Reynolds want to do more dramatic pieces.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom Exactly, although I think it would've been even more impactful if, in order to get the soul stone, Thanos had take the life of Gamora by having to fight her and take her life himself.
The problem with this movie is that there's no point of having a villain like it could have gone Thor trying find peace after endgame and reconnecting with Jane finding out that she has cancer and living with her till her last day and then giving a glimpse of Hercules,Zues or maybe gorr
I feel like this movie wasted Jane. We will never have another chance to see her for years and her story is one of the most distinctive within hero stories
For real! I thought she was great and loved to see a classic character return! I was looking forward to seeing more of her in future movies, only to be told very definitely that is never going to happen!
@@ojodeoro1106 your exaggerating. He literally went back to sakkar in she hulk. My guess is she gets her ass beat by Abomination or maybe even damage control. Which pisses Hulk off setting up World war hulk
I hated Love and Thunder but I do find it quite ironic that people have wanted the MCU films to have more of a voice and vision and Waititi did do that but fucked it up real bad. Similar to Patty Jenkins and WW84, it shows that just letting someone do whatever the fuck with established characters and settings can be really bad even if they are talented people. Basically this film desperately needed someone to remind the people working on it about the actual characters involved.
The movie made all of the tragedy thor went through into a joke, downplayed everything to a point where even the ending wasn't emotional at all. Even ragnarok had serious, mature and character driven story moments. Thor is a completely different person in this movie. It felt like a cartoony spin off rather than a real thor movie. Thor acted like a child, which can be funny at times but not when it's his main personality in the movie. He didn't demonstrate his wisdom or the maturity he had gained throughout the thor movies and into avengers age of ultron I dont remember any awesome scenes. Movie was forgettable.
I feel this movie doubled down on what Endgame did to Thor. Turning him into a joke with no purpose or direction. Having him hide and abandon his people to some slaver who never regretted what she did for the Grand master, and this after learning of the importance of Asgard as a people and not just a place in Ragnorak.
The reason Ragnarok felt more balanced Was because Taika didn’t have full control with that movie With this one they just decided to give him the full bone And in turn he just went all out with his goofy nature The guy can’t make a serious moment without ruining it with an unfunny joke Like the Goats It’s was somewhat funny the first time, but hearing them screech every time I’m just like we get it , they’re screaming goats What was he trying to accomplish there? Giving him full control over this was a huge mistake Please get someone else for Thor 5 Assuming there will be one Someone who knows the character well and understands him Not someone like Taika who just sees everything as a joke
You put into words the true frustration that I had with this movie. No other review captures my thoughts this well. I wasn’t happy with Ragnarok, I really didn’t like it. But this actually angered me. Not a single moment felt serious after the first five minutes, and I just don’t understand what the thought process was. It just felt like such a blatant slap in the face to people that wanted to see Jane as Thor and to see another Thor adventure. I wanted to like this movie. But goddamn, did it disappoint.
How come you still went and saw this film despite not liking Ragnarok? It seemed quite obvious from the trailers that Taika was gonna go full Taika on this movie, so I didn't even bother with it ...
@@whyisntitpossible404 Because unfortunately, I still am seeing the MCU movies to keep up even if I’m not looking forward to them. I love superhero movies. And I was hoping that maybe my taste would change and maybe I would enjoy this one a little bit more.
Spite. I'm convinced. He spite f_cked the fans of the MCU. Why do I say this? The set up to the jokes. They are all weighty moments, devilishly crafted to draw you in. Then..."it's just a prank bro! Why are you getting so mad, bro? It's a pra--no, f_ck you! AND I'm going to hook up with your girl!" Every. Single. One. And he did it. He spite f_cked our girl.
I was so excited to an Asguardians of the Galaxy story. The guardians were the perfect characters to help mold Thor into a hero that was dealing with his trauma in a healthy way. (It would also be a great time for Drax to actually do something that wasn't a joke. His dead family was NEVER brought up while fighting Thanos. Great time to remedy that mistake.) Also, untapped potential for jokes that actually land because Thor's jokes (old god from a nordic world vs. young pirates in scifi space) would bounce well off them. Instead, we barely got anything because Marvel wanted money and was too lazy to make the directors work together or hire a director to combine the two hero groups. As soon as Endgame ended, I said "I only care to see the Guardians/Thor movie. After that, I'm done." Welp, they couldn't even do that, so after I watch the Guardians movie (already disappointed), I am officially done. Star Wars has already been ruined by Disney. I'm not sticking around to see them make another dumpster fire of a second beloved franchise.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about L&T, there were parts that I really loved, like Jane, Gorr, Valkyrie and the relationship between Thor and Jane, the way they talked on the boat and after finding out about her cancer was great. But there were parts that I absolutely loathed, like the screaming goats, Thor when he tries to be funny out of nowhere and Korg. I was really hoping he'd die when Zeus struck him but then I remembered he was narrating so 🤷♀️
At this point, I am just pretending that Love and Thunder never happened. In my mind, the story told by Corg (beginning of the movie) is just his twisted view of the reality that he is trying to understand and is entirely made up. It's even a nice gate to just erase this movie from a canon of the MCU.
OMG I really do hope this thought occur to Watiti. This would be the only way he can redeem the mcu thor universe. The next movie should start with Corg ending his narration and Thor entering the room and saying something along the line of "That's all made up kids" or something like that. I still can't get over how they waste the god killer Christian bale character like that. This gives me a sliver of hope though.
This movie was a mess. On an unrelated note, I know realize that the first time I ever saw Taika Waititi was as Hal Jordan's sidekick in the Green Lantern movie...
That is a great idea. It actually would have been better if Thor LOVED having Jane as a co-hero and they spent the first act of the film romping and stomping around the universe and fall in love while Gorr is butchering gods. They have a brief battle with Gorr but they are no match for him. They barely get away with their lives. They go to the home of the gods. Zeus refuses to help. So it turns into a heist. They need to steal his lighting bolt, which is considered the most powerful weapon in the universe since Odin is gone. This leads to an all out brawl with the pantheon of Greek gods and a narrow escape. Then have Thor discover that Jane has cancer, and that Gorr may not be beatable. This brings them into conflict. That leaves Jane in a hospital bed and Thor off to fight Gorr in what might be a losing battle as the stars in the skies start to burn out as the Universe begins to go dark. I'd lose that entire kids are kidnapped sub-plot and the Eternity sub-plot. Then have Gorr show up at Jane's bedside and explain himself and we get his backstory. Thor returns to save Jane, but Gorr is still very much a match for him. Jane chooses to stop him and help save everyone and Thor and makes the choice to pick up the hammer one last time. I'd maybe do a callback by having Gorr say 'put the hammer down'. Thor and Jane defeat Gorr and save the gods. Jane dies. The stars return. Thor moves on. Post credit scene: Still sets up Hercules from the lightning heist in Act 2
when a person comes to terms with how pervasive hollywood peydo phila is, you can begin to understand why they inject all these rescue the children sub plots in many many big budget box office films it doesn't matter if those sub plots are largely irrelevant to the bigger storyline of the movie, they are still going to inject all their fake virtue signalling regardless the less relevant to the story that these sub plots are... the more obvious and apparent it becomes to see just how much they are immaterial to the actual main story and is basically just an accessory, like an appendage hanging off of a corpse
Okay but why would Gorr go to Janes bed? Since the fight? To bait Thor? For those who aren’t as good at subtext (mainly me) you could give Jane some sort of thing that would draw Gorr to her. A key to his plan maybe. Then again that’s what Thor 2 was… idk nevermind
When you said this movie should have Jane as the main character, i agree for like 100% like that what was I thinking while watching the movie. In my head, I was like the person who has cancer but she decides to save lives is like a thing should be focused for the entire movie.
But he is another reason why Thor became what he became. He no longer wanted to sign for Thor unless Taika produced the films. He also is the main reason Thor is such a goof now with little to no substance. Do your research.
Only thing I don’t like about him is his fitness app that advertises his body as a product of the programs in the app. It’s a little scummy considering his physique is largely built on exogenous substances. But otherwise he does seem like quite a decent guy.
I'm the biggest Thor fan, I absolutely love Thor. I can't believe I'm going to admit this but you are 100% correct. Taika Waititi took everything that worked from all his past movies and totally ignored it. I knew Taika was the problem, he thought he could do no wrong. Well he ruined my favourite franchise. I just hope we see Thor again..... without Taika Waititi 🙏
This film really frustrated me because they downplay his depression when it should've been about him coming back and rediscovering himself. Even Endgame Thor finding out he was still worthy is way more impactful than this entire movie
Damn i expected this to be more connected to the first 3 phases in a way that the Thor we knew from back then is way different now, i thought they were going to touch on the fact that he is the remaining member of the original Avengers (besides Hawkeye) I haven't watch it yet but goddamn i have to now
This movie was such a disservice to Jason Aaron's Thor run. They could have had two generations of films and TV shows based off what he did, and they let this happen? Wow.
This was the MCU equivalent of an Adam Sandler movie where Waititi tells the studio he's going to do a great film but really just brings his buddies on a holiday and they screw around and film some skits and wrap it up and send it to the studio and say "yeah, here it is."
This review has been so cathartic. Thank you! It is like I have been given permission to not like this movie. There are a couple of other things that drove me crazy too. First, in the movie reviews I read, they said that Thor was much less dumb in this movie, but I thought he was so much more dumb in this one. Second, and people might be offended at this one, I like to think the God of Carpenters does not report to Zeus, nor does he hang out in Zeus's hedonistic den. I thought that attempt at humor was oddly placed and usually fell flat. Then based upon this review I did some more research, and Taika Waititi seems to have something against smart people, dismissing them as nerds and not liking Banner/Hulk. Banner is my favorite character because he is a science nerd. Then all this gave me permission to be dissatisfied with Ragnarok. There were a lot of things funny about it, but I strongly dislike discontinuity of character and simple facts. It appears Waititi didn't even watch his own movie for perspective - Korg referred to his mum and her boyfriend in Ragnarok, but he referred to his two dads in Love & Thunder. I'm not asking for much, and it's not like Waititi had to go through 10 year of movies - just the other one he directed. It is so good to be able to say I didn't like Love & Thunder, and I am dissatisfied with Ragnarok.
Watiti is so obsessed with being "quirky and different" so I am not surprised if he just ironically enjoys cringey outdated jokes and childish humor because it makes him different. Not because he finds them funny
I'm scared of what this movie means for the rest of the MCU honestly. I agree with you that the Marvel machine and the time crunch that Marvel Studios puts on their movies is probably what discouraged Taika from giving it his all, but then what does this mean for all the upcoming films? I feel like Marvel is ultimately dooming itself with the constant output of projects and the lack of creative control and time they give to their creatives.
Eh while the MCU does tend to go too hard on the comedy at times this specifically I do feel is mostly on Taika, espeially because really looking at Phase 4, they have actually been giving directors more creative control, hell I think Hemsworth even said they gave Taika more control on this film than he had on Ragnorak.
@@mikemorro140 Yeah I do think Taika had more control in this one but I can't help but feel like lack of time from Marvel's part is what discouraged Taika. This film straight up feels like it needed another draft of the script but the studio forced a July 2022 release date
@@oinkoinkinc.studios Thing is he had about the same time for this as Ragnorak if not more since it was announced back in 2019, like I think I remember interviews where he said he got the script together in a couple weeks or something and chose to go with that
@@mikemorro140 I actually believe Phase 4 is more restricted than Infinity Saga. Lots of the world building is less of the story and more on future setups. Like, even more than AoU was. Taika def disappoint with this but he's only half at fault.
this dynamic is been all the time - a unique "specialty" director is invited in to do their own version of a pre-established character - and they do a great job - the first time - when they're still partially constrained by studio expectations or guidance - and since things go so well, they're giving carte blanche or free reign to "do whatever they want" on the following film, never realizing that the BLEND of the speciality director combined with the pre-established tone is what was the actual formulae for success. TLDR: Taika Waititi is a good comedy director, who worked well in RAGNAROK because he was working within the MCU framework - after that was released, his unrestricted comedy stylings were overdone for Thor fans and the film suffered because it had no seriousness to what should have been actually a lot of serious storylines
Watching Thor fans react to 'Thor: Love and Thunder' is bitterly satisfying to Loki fans. We complained about Loki being nerfed and his OOCness in 'Ragnarok', and all the Thor fans mocked us for "not having a sense of humor" and "taking things too seriously". Now that it's *their* favorite character in Taika Waititi's crosshairs, his deficiencies as a director and storyteller are apparent to them. Here's the thing about Taika Waititi, and anyone who paid serious attention to his interviews around the time Gagnarok dropped knows it: Taika fundamentally *hates* superhero movies. Or to be more precise, he hates the type of superhero movies Marvel is famous for, which makes dramatic stories about the human trials and tribulations of people with powers. Taika likes the cheesy, campy superhero movies with lots of bright colors and simplistic storylines. He doesn't want to see the angst of people he regards as very privileged and who therefore shouldn't have any problems. This is especially true of the Thor franchise, in which the leads aren't only superpowered but actual royalty. He said outright in interviews that no one should sympathize with Loki or Thor, because they were spoiled rich kids who didn't know anything about REAL problems. And honestly, I could respect that if Taika had simply turned down the job when Marvel approached him on those grounds and kept on making movies about the lives of marginalized people and their struggles. I mean, jerkass has a point. But when he took on the project with the fixed intent of destroying the characters and universe, that I can't respect. Nobody who hates a genre or fandom should ever be involved in making content for that franchise. When that happens you get travesties like the cancellation of 'Farscape' by a network CEO who doesn't like science fiction. (Bonnie Hammer, I'm looking at you.) TL;DR - Now you know how it feels, Thor fans. It burns, doesn't it?
Im more worried for Loki now though, this to me seems like the last chance for Loki to even be mentioned outside their series and its gone. MoM just completely ignored the series and its implications, I feel like marvel just forgot they had to actually connect the series to the universe and this movie reinforces that (Also the movie didnt even feel like it connected to anything, despite most projects now being intertwined with others now)
My favorite theme of Thor's is fate. Lots of old myths play with it and it's fitting since he's a god. Here, we have a premise of gods being hunted, someone who challenges their immortality; someone who force them their fates. How does movies deals with it? No way at all. In 'Ragnarok', this plays a bit with the prophecy of Ragnarok. Thor is forced to enact it to save the people of Asgard. Waititi even subtly inserted a rock-paper-scissors joke in here. In 'Infinity War', Thor loses much of his people nonetheless, to Thanos. By fate's name, he chooses to avenge them. In 'Endgame', he succeeded, but in a hollow sense. So for the rest of the movie, he too become a shell of his former self. When the Snap was finally undone and Thanos killed a second time, Thor found a way for peace for himself. He may not have properly killed Thanos, but Thanos is nevertheless properly killed; that's what matters. And with that, he chooses to write his own fate, with people who would've come to understand him the most in terms of losses: the Guardians of the Galaxy. In 'Love and Thunder', everything comes into total randomness. Gorr, how he obtained the sword, Jane's worthiness; the whole plot. It's baffling how Waititi and his writing partner failed to see how to connect them together into a cohesive story.
I think the Russo's failed to give Thor any purpose or direction in Endgame. They should have made him an overprotective king, and married to Lady Sif. And maybe he is the one that snaps to bring everyone back. Then in the 4th film he could have children of his own, and have to face off against Gorr. They could have set the tone for phase 4, but instead they doubled down on jokes and the next phase did the same.
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp I think the Russos, as well as Markus and McFeely, set Thor to find a purpose that is not being the son of Odin or the god of thunder. Throughout the Infinity Saga, he was dictated by fate, written on his name, so the end of 'Endgame' saw him releasing himself off it. The next chapter should've been him maintaining his defiance of it. What we got instead is the un-building of everything worked out on the character previously.
@@peterfrank3365 but Thor's story is that he is constantly struggling between his loyalty to Earth and his duties in Asgard. Inevitably he always chooses Asgard in the end. So taking away the path of his choosing Asgard, what's left to do with his character other then to see him make more jokes? I wanted to see him mature, and see him utilize everything he learned in the first 3 films. Ragnorak set him up perfectly to finally accept his role as King, especially after learning about the importance of Asgard as a people and not just a place. Then they just deviated completely. He hid and abandoned his people, leaving in charge some slaver who never regretted what she did for the Grand master. All that build up, and they just took a hard left. It makes his journey feel incomplete. To build him up to one place, and then undo all of that and regress him to the point where he has to find himself again over 20 films in.
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp And Thor unburdened himself from that struggle. His loyalty is now with the general people, be it of New Asgard, Earth, or anywhere else in the galaxy. That's why he joined the Guardians, to help others in distress. Maybe it is a hard left turn, but that's what Thanos was anyway. He's a cruelty of fate's. Meanwhile, Valkyrie's side of the story left unexplored is yet another missed opportunity of this movie.
When I saw the non spoiler reviews (before watching the movie by myself) saying "Thor 4 has a generic story and the movie is one of the WORST Marvel movies". I thought 'How can a superhero movie with generic story can be that awful? Sounds like it's gonna be about 4~6 out of 10 just an average marvel movie' and AFTER I saw the movie I totally understood how that's possible.
The part where Thor is talking to Starlord about leaving the dialogue is so weird and then after that Thor meets lady Sif and THAT DIALOGUE was so bad I thought the scene wasn’t real
Honestly yeah it would have been a better film of it was called The Mighty Thor and made it about Jane and Thor himself should have instead of appeared in Guardians Vol. 3, but instead they went to the trouble of having him join the Guardians during Endgame only to have them appear alongside Thor for about 5 mins before being yeeted out.
You know what annoys me the most about this film? If they absolutely had to have Korg survive, why not have the Kronan god--y'know, the one they specifically pointed out when they arrived at Omnipotence City--be involved somehow? Maybe have Korg actually get killed off, but Ninny (yes that is the god's actual name, I had to double check) reassembles him. Or at least have him do so at the end of the movie instead of Korg somehow managing to regrow his entire body offscreen (An ability which Kronans have never been stated or even hinted to possess.) Really, I just wanted the gods to be more involved in general. What was the point of introducing so many gods and then having none of them be important to the story? In fact, aside from Zeus and his Macguffin Bolt, the new gods introduced were so inconsequential to the plot of the film that Thor could have just met up with Zeus in an empty room to ask for help and nothing would have gone differently.
I was waiting the entire time if Ninny even reacted seeing a fellow Kronan destroyed, but no, we only had 1 shot of his introduction and nothing more, just for the sake of another J O K E. I know the gods are mostly depicted as apathetic to mortal, but they're in a city of no mortal. Wouldn't he somehow affected seeing what he thought a young Kronan god pulverized before his eyes?
Good video, man. Well reasoned and I agreed with every point. One of Marvel's worst tendencies is to weaken something they've already developed for something less. Captain America's shield-throwing was pretty unique...unless you need Sam to practice in his yard for an afternoon and then he's just as good, even without superstrength. Nick Fury was a dead-serious badass, until they needed a quick joke for Captain Marvel so there goes the mystery behind his eyepatch. Thor has to walk in space and suffer the power of a star to get Stormbreaker but eh, might as well give it away when Mjolnir reassembles magically (something that would've been really handy during every movie since Dark World...) And why is he pining for either hammer when he doesn't need them...after all, he's not the "Lord of Hammers", to quote Odin. Waititi can't even maintain continuity with his own prior movie! Just pitiful...
Exactly! I was mad at this fact throughout the whole fricking movie! I feel he should've had a scene with Odin instead, since his father was was an important figure across all 3 films. His mom only really mattered in the 2nd film, then they killed her off.
@@joshdunne8792 I think it would have made more sense, for Odin to be able to sense Thor's presence. Plus I feel the only thing his mom did was get him to stop feeling depressed so he could be in the final battle. It wasn't so impactful that he was taught a valuable lesson that once again shaped him. He ended going off to find himself again. I feel Odin would have been able to help Thor find his purpose, and allow him to get back on track. Being a good King and leading his people.
For the first 20 minutes I thought this was on par with Lego Batman in terms of comedy. I loved it. It was poised to be one of my favorite MCU movies. But once Korg stopped narrating, it should have settled in to something more serious. Unfortunately they just kept going with the jokes. They didn't know when to stop. Jane and Thor haven't seen each other and 8 years and she wants to talk about her "superhero catchphrase"?? (Like, is that even a thing anymore? Hell, Deadpool mocked superhero landings 6 years ago. And Black Widow after that! Enough winking nods! It's not as clever as you think it is.) And Thor pouring a beer on Stormbreaker? Does he have a concussion or something?? It's a shame. The ingredients were there. Another couple drafts of the script, some more feedback, the right edits, and this could have been a masterpiece.
As someone who wasn't very partial to Ragnarok and read the reviews that stated that the film exasperated the aspects that I disliked in the last Thor film, I thought I knew what I was going to watch. But I still wasn't quite prepared for the fundamental incompetence on characterization, structure and pacing that I was in for. It truly felt like this multi-billion dollar studio saw an early draft of a film, funded it $200 million and told him to run with it, I took the made by a 7 year old quote to mean that the movie was imaginative but I don't think they realized how ironically true that statement could be.
Honestly could've had thor humour Jane for a bit in the movie with the catch phrase stuff, but once we got into serious problems Thor should've been the one to generally take the situation seriously and act according to it.
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp which is partly a reaction to The Dark World, which is mostly somber and self serious -- and always near the bottom of everyone's list.
@@gridlo the problem wasn't the attempts at being more serious in Dark World it was that they had no idea what to do with Thor. That and the villain was awful. A serious Thor can work. I'd argue that the first Thor film is more serious, but balanced it out with comedy in just the right places.
At the beginning of the movie Gorr asks a god for help and is denied when he learns that the God he looks up to is a bumbling fool and doesn't care, then murders him to become a villain. It is a great scene to set up the villain and give him a pretty decent reason to be super evil. Half way through the movie Thor asks a god for help and is denied when he learns that the God he looks up to is a bumbling fool and doesn't care, he then at the time, murders him and it becomes a joke. The scene where Thor murders a God due to his frustration with Gods being useless should have been a HUGE turning point of the film that really gets us to feel about the message of the movie, and it mirrors the beginning scene pretty well. However, it is a joke. They get a thunderbolt that also turns out to be useless. A scene that should have been the lynchpin of the movie could have been cut with nothing lost.
Thor in the first avengers, ragnorak, and infinity war found good balances of humour and maturity. It balanced light hearted vibes, with a serious weight to the scenes that bring it in. Thor love and thunder took the worst aspects of Thor from Endgame, which had at least a reason to exist, because Thor was dealing with a lot. They say at the beginning that he lost the weight and he’s dealing with his problems. But the only thing that’s changed from endgame to love and thunder is he isn’t overweight anymore
I feel that making him depressed and overweight was the wrong way to go. They should have shown him maturing across the films. Endgame was the perfect place to do that. Instead they turned him into a joke with no purpose or direction, and this 4th Thor movie continued that. They should have made him an overprotective king, and married to Lady Sif. Then in the 4th film he could have children of his own, and have to face off against Gorr. They could have set the tone for phase 4, but instead they doubled down on jokes and the next phase did the same
Something I realized years ago was that I can’t put true expectations on the MCU anymore. For the most part, I can’t expect the movies to be unique or for a character to take risks/be faithful to the comics because it’s all about the mass market appeal.
Yup. The last thing Marvel that felt like it truly had it's own identity and respected the characters was Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes. Then they cancelled it to make way for an inferior show capitalizing on the MCU.
Exactly. Everyone watches MCU with expectations of the highest regard. After Eternals, i stopped having any expectations and really enjoyed both Strange 2 and Thor 4
@@slayerbot1394 Sadly, after doctor strange 2 which I was kind of disappointed, I'm currently kind of reluctant to watch the rest of the phase 4 of MCU (other than spider man no way home and shang chi which I've already watched before and loved both).
tbh I had a lot of fun for the first few minutes when korg talks because I was convinced it was “oh he’s telling an exaggerated story of Thor, they’re gonna cut to the real movie any minute” but that was the movie 😂 And yeah I think Taika is the type of person who has to work on something that he has a certain personal connection to. Have you seen “Boy”? Absolutely phenomenal movie.
There was so much potential to build on that backstory with a guy that literally hates gods because they don't care about people - that paralleled Thor's journey out of being an insufferable ass at the beginning of Thor 1. Instead, we get a bunch of gods who don't care about people protected, the understandably angry guy decide to kidnap kids because we gotta show he's a villain compared to these insufferable assholes, and missed opportunities for some really deep moments like someone mentioned above with Quill and Jane, or even Nebula and Gorr. Everyone could have had an arc that made sense while playing off the comedic skills of Hemsworth as shown in the montage.
I have a question if Mjolnir could be re-assembled so easily why did Thor spent 2/3 of Infinity war trying to create the stormbreaker? Couldn't he just fix and fight Thanos earlier?
He didn't know it could be reassembled, mainly. Easily or otherwise. He didn't know it could be _broken,_ moreover. Aside from that Stormbreaker, Bifrost-summoning power in tow, is the more powerful weapon. A power blast from all six Infinity Stones in a gauntlet couldn't even stop it after being thrown…
My father took me to watch Thor because he knows I like Marvel, and we needed to relax a bit after weeks of taking my aunt to chemo. I'm convinced he now thinks I'm too dumb or too insensitive for agreeing to go see a movie that doesn't care to take anything serious, even something so important as someone dealing with cancer. And it's not like you can't make a comedy out of complicated topics, Taika is an expert on that, but this time he decided to not care at all
I can relate. I took my dad to watch Age Of Ultron for his birthday and during and after the movie he was looking at me with this expression on his face😏. He was like " Seriously "?

So... Exactly like Ragnaschlock. He in that movie would rather crack jokes than show any concern over his friends.

I think the only reason why he did it was because it paid well, or he just likes pissing people off for all the wrong reasons. Taika should focus on making Our Flag Means Death, that show is gold.
When it seemed like they set up a movie with both Thor and the Guardians, I was excited about that. But, then they just dropped it, and badly so.

To be fair I felt like that the movies ended with Ragnarok, that Infinity War started to ruin Thor before Love and Thunder came out
YES YES YES.
No worries they will just resurrect her somehow. Nothing matters anymore
Yeh…
For some reason they don't want to pay women super hero money.
Bruh WTF?! 🤨

Thor: L & T is like the definition of a missed potential. They genuinely could've made it so much better even while retaining the fun vibe.

Seriously, it makes no sense at all. It’s like Taika actually tried to make this movie shit and fully sabotaged it.
The humor could’ve been so good but it was just cringe and boring humor.
Also I cannot believe that Jane line at the end

Actually made it in a 2022 blockbuster movie.
@@buffnipz I actually like Ragnarok lmao. Tbh I've seen more Ragnarok fans be pissed at this movie & that includes me.

@Callus Linde Yes, we do.
But, I agree that with Disney sterilizing everything they had due to mandates from BlackRock, you get a point. Taika Watiti works well with dark humor, something Disney is very allergic to and shouldn't be mixed with them.
I love TW's movies, definitely not L&T.
@Callus Linde IceFairy said it better than me, but I agree.
he's just phoning it in with mcu atm dude literally spends all his energy for other projects
Absolutely totally agree!
Point me in the way where that's in the comics, please!♥I'm looking forward to reading it.

That Thor compilation made me tear up. Ragnarok->Infinity War really was Thor’s peak huh?

-The god world, I imagine a team up of a lot of deities from many cultures to defeat Gor would have been cool

In my opinion, the best Thor is the one in Infinity War. Just dig down on that and make a Thor movie where he copes with all his loss. Dammit, man...
Dammit it's sad to see Thor succumbs below Ant-Man and the Wasp.
I don’t like how SLOWLY infinity war is being undone.. Loki is back, Heimdall is back, Vision is back, Gamora is back, Thor’s eye, hair and hammer are back.. death and loss feels meaningless now as it does in comics.. @@firstlast9846 they needed to show Thor maturing as time went on, and show that he learned from the lessons of the previous films.

Fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice - shame on me...
AND I'm going to hook up with your girl!"
Every. Single.
Pretty much all of phase 4 falls into this catogary, especially black widow.
Plot main points are excellent. Execution is absolutely abysmal. This Waititty guy deserves a life sentencen
Just pretend it's a what if story
The Thor montage literally made me tear up. Freaking beautiful.
It really was fire, makes this movie hurt more
Does anyone have a link to it?
its like some people have a brain drain for details, loved it too. Taika did good.
Thor is my favorite MCU character. He has a tragic arc but it feels more real than any of the others. That said, I couldn’t even finish L&T.
Post credit scene: Still sets up Hercules from the lightning heist in Act 2
this script for the movie by a commenter on TH-cam is miles better than the actual movie and that says something
Now that would be a good movie to watch
when a person comes to terms with how pervasive hollywood peydo phila is, you can begin to understand why they inject all these rescue the children sub plots in many many big budget box office films
it doesn't matter if those sub plots are largely irrelevant to the bigger storyline of the movie, they are still going to inject all their fake virtue signalling regardless
the less relevant to the story that these sub plots are... the more obvious and apparent it becomes to see just how much they are immaterial to the actual main story and is basically just an accessory, like an appendage hanging off of a corpse
@@AppleUploadsVideos thats because the writing was done by a 4 year old, its amazing how it only takes a normy to write and direct an mcu movie
When you said this movie should have Jane as the main character, i agree for like 100% like that what was I thinking while watching the movie. In my head, I was like the person who has cancer but she decides to save lives is like a thing should be focused for the entire movie.
At this point, I'm only watching these for Chris Hemsworth. He's a very very respectable guy from what I've seen atleast.
He’s the reason I’m not mad at how Thor was represented, dude is too charming, I can’t get mad at that
But he is another reason why Thor became what he became. He no longer wanted to sign for Thor unless Taika produced the films. He also is the main reason Thor is such a goof now with little to no substance. Do your research.
@@1990maman he wanted a NEW director not specifically taika because The dark world absolute ass so it made sense but now.. nah taika gotta go

Me, too.
That recap sequence you put together is fantastic bro good shit
This film really frustrated me because they downplay his depression when it should've been about him coming back and rediscovering himself. Even Endgame Thor finding out he was still worthy is way more impactful than this entire movie
Damn i expected this to be more connected to the first 3 phases in a way that the Thor we knew from back then is way different now, i thought they were going to touch on the fact that he is the remaining member of the original Avengers (besides Hawkeye)
I haven't watch it yet but goddamn i have to now
That montage was beautifully edited. Well done on the video. Perfectly put into words why Thor love and thunder didn’t work
This movie was such a disservice to Jason Aaron's Thor run. They could have had two generations of films and TV shows based off what he did, and they let this happen? Wow.
My favorite part of the movie was when gorr said “it’s gorrin time!” It was an absolutely phenomenal moment with amazing buildup and perfect execution

MCU fans are just like MCU movies, they think they're so hilarous but they're really not.
@RealityCheckins your mother
These jokes are getting unfunny throughout the time
@ that priest who loves killing children your mother
Why does Taika think screaming goats are funny in 2022💀
Zero clue
Watiti is so obsessed with being "quirky and different" so I am not surprised if he just ironically enjoys cringey outdated jokes and childish humor because it makes him different. Not because he finds them funny
Cause he's the type of guy with Facebook humor
Was there any time that it would be funny?
I'm scared of what this movie means for the rest of the MCU honestly. I agree with you that the Marvel machine and the time crunch that Marvel Studios puts on their movies is probably what discouraged Taika from giving it his all, but then what does this mean for all the upcoming films? I feel like Marvel is ultimately dooming itself with the constant output of projects and the lack of creative control and time they give to their creatives.
Honestly? I saw the MCU going down with Cpt. Marvel. This movie's just the final blow for me.
I'll make exception for GOTG 3.
@@oinkoinkinc.studios
Thing is he had about the same time for this as Ragnorak if not more since it was announced back in 2019, like I think I remember interviews where he said he got the script together in a couple weeks or something and chose to go with that
@@mikemorro140 I actually believe Phase 4 is more restricted than Infinity Saga.
(Bonnie Hammer, I'm looking at you.)
TL;DR - Now you know how it feels, Thor fans. It burns, doesn't it?
Wrong. Everyone knows they ruined loki. They ruin almost all the characters.
He should make The death of superman film.
I mean, superman won't die in that movie because he a superhero
Your bitterness is amusing
This whole comment is basically....
"Stings doesn't it?" - Bully Maguire.

Sounds like it's gonna be about 4~6 out of 10 just an average marvel movie' and AFTER I saw the movie
I totally understood how that's possible.
The part where Thor is talking to Starlord about leaving the dialogue is so weird and then after that Thor meets lady Sif and THAT DIALOGUE was so bad I thought the scene wasn’t real
He had to explain how Valhalla works to Sif!
Bro dropped the hardest Thor edit of all time and proceeds to talk about Love and Thunder 💀
Or at least have him do so at the end of the movie instead of Korg somehow managing to regrow his entire body offscreen (An ability which Kronans have never been stated or even hinted to possess.)
Really, I just wanted the gods to be more involved in general.
I literally thought that the god reassemble him I was like uhhhh nvm then again I hated the character
Aren't you the same person who directed the movie where Thor learnt a cardinal lesson that the thunder is him, and his weapon is just a tool to channel that thunder?
Why do we have a sequel which totally disregards that lesson and has Thor pining for weapons again?!!
Whatever happened to continuity??

I feel Odin would have been able to help Thor find his purpose, and allow him to get back on track. Being a good King and leading his people.
That montage sent literal shivers down my spine. This movie has criminally character assassinated Thor.
I like Korg when he first appeared. I also kinda wanted a movie around him.. What I didn't want was a thor movie all about him
For the first 20 minutes I thought this was on par with Lego Batman in terms of comedy.
A combination of Endgame turning Thor into a joke with no purpose or direction and Waititi/Hemsworth wanting more comedy.
A scene that should have been the lynchpin of the movie could have been cut with nothing lost.
the fact Thor just shazamed himself and gave powers to the kids just made everything a joke... Thor really learnt nothing by the end of the movie

Have you seen “Boy”? Absolutely phenomenal movie.
That whole Thor montage did more justice to the character by itself than Thor: Love and Thunder
Any idea where that's from?
Yooo, the thor Montage made Thor's character more appreciated damn.
And it's not like you can't make a comedy out of complicated topics, Taika is an expert on that, but this time he decided to not care at all
Uh, no, they took the cancer part seriously in the movie.
I can relate. I took my dad to watch Age Of Ultron for his birthday and during and after the movie he was looking at me with this expression on his face😏. He was like " Seriously "?
