Little background on the Toad struck by lightning line for anyone interested. There was initially supposed to be a running rivalry between Storm and Toad throughout the movie where’d he say things like “do you know what happens to a toad when it’s cornered” or “do you know what happens a toad when it senses danger” so Storm’s one liner to him was intended to be a way of her telling him to shut the hell up about toads, but then all the preceding lines were cut but the final one was left in, just making Storm look like an idiot.
That rivalry must have been a thing from Joss Whedon's original script, and so the "You know what happens to a toad" line is actually one of only 2 lines of dialogue that were written by Joss Whedon and survived in the final cut.
My favorite part of Dark Phoenix was during Mystique’s funeral when Charles says “she died doing what she loved most,” and my friend whispered in my ear “what being impaled?” That was the ONLY time I felt ANYTHING during that movie.
Now that you mention it I don't even know why mystique was part of the x-men, it makes no sense to me how she was this cold villain the old movies and then she's now a superhero???
Michael Fassbender as Magneto was probably one of the most solid casting choices made in any comic book movie. Just a shame the writing couldn't keep up with his acting over the course of those movies.
@@rjofusetsudzin8011 That’s exactly how it is in the comics, he isn’t inherently bad he’s just misguided in his belief that humans are bad - the antithesis to Charles who is perceived as good because he believes humans are good. When in reality they are both wrong, not all humans are the same.
24:30 Funny how he says there is no subtlety anymore and just misinterprets the respect he had for Charles for not wanting him to die? 23:45 My man he never said he “didn’t want Charles to die”, he just had respect for an old friend, though they couldn’t see eye to eye still respected each other greatly, sad to see one of my favourite scenes done like this.
I think the lines weird when he left him for dead in the last film, like I don’t see much respect there? Charles treats him as an old friend and seems pained that they can’t find a peaceful solution to their conflict, but Magneto doesn’t seem to care that much about Charles. It feels very one sided, and the as a result the line felt weird to me
@Zero-mn8bt He didn't leave him for dead, Charles died. Those are two separate things entirely. What was he gonna do, goodby? Jean turned him into dust. He showed Charles the same level of respect Charles did him this again being shown when he got on Pyro for disrespecting him. They fought the same war just approached it differently. They called each other old friend for a reason. They loved each other as brothers.
i love in dark phoenix when charles is like "storm you cant come, i care for you too much. alright scott lets go" it says a lot about how cyclops is treated in every single one of these xmen movies
What makes it even funnier is that storm was basically a villian in the last movie until the badguy was already pretty much defeated AND STILL he cares more about her than cyclops who always was on his side.
Yeah but he's right: Cyclops is boring. Seriously, he always has been dull in the comics no matter what the writers tried. And he makes no sense; he's literally a glass cannon.
@@christophertaylor9100 I've always liked him in the comics, the field leader that guides the team through the missions. A shame these movies didn't even try anything with him
42:33 What's even more frustrating is that there actually is an entire extended montage of Scott, Jean, Jubilee and Nightcrawler having fun at the mall... but they cut it. It's in the deleted scenes and it's great. Nightcrawler does some break-dancing, Scott and Jean go shopping for vinyls. It's a really fun scene and they decided to just axe it.
Tonally, it feels like a different movie. It's more fun and lighthearted and shows mutants starting to be more accepted. I actually wish we have gotten to see that movie. Hopefully marvel will give us a different flavor for the xmen. No way home has proved you can have a lighthearted tone balanced with more serious gritty stuff.
That scene where Angel is trying to cut off his wings was fucking insane. It went hard. Really dark and brutal for a PG-13 film, and the acting of the kid and the father was damn good, too.
This is a great example of pushing the PG-13 rating and I Really Hate that the MCU doesn't do stuff like this and I really do hope they do it with Moon Knight
@@bobbyadams8889 They kinda pushed the PG-13 with that blood on the shield scene in Falcon and The Winter Soldier, I hope we will get more scenes like that when necessary
Days of Future Past and Logan are my two favorites in this series. That one line when Erik says “All those years wasted fighting each other Charles. To have a precious few of them back.” is legitimately one of my favorite lines in any comic book movie. I think it’s so heartfelt and amazing.
Yep those two are top tier I'd go 1. Logan 2. Days of Future Past 3. First Class 4. X2 5. The rest are bad but X1 was at least original (edit: obviously Deadpool is fucking incredible)
@@jaredsilvers2782 I’d have basically the same list but I’d also put The Wolverine behind X2, I think that’s actually a pretty good little action movie.
One of the saddest things about Apocalypse to me was how they failed to use Psylocke, cause I just feel bad for the actress, Olivia Munn. She's actually a big fan of the character, and was super excited to play her, did a ton of training and read more comics, and they even got a comic-accurate eye-catching costume unlike every other black jumpsuit in the movie... only for the directer to know nothing about her (to the point where the actress had to explain the character to the director), and she gets like 1 minute of screen time and 2 lines. I just feel bad for her. She still got to keep the katana prop, however.
It's so frustrating that they used Evan Peters/Quicksilver as a cheap tease in Wandavision he fits the MCU so well hopefully they find a way to bring him back now that the Multiverse is being explored
The “Do you know what happens to a toad” line is a hold over from an earlier draft of the script where Toad the character had more dialogue and would routinely say weird toad/frog facts relating to the situation (the example given was the “you know what happens to a toad when you place it in a pan of water and heat it” thing) so it made sense in that context as a witty rejoinder to Toad’s catchphrase, but they decided to cut almost all of Toad’s dialogue so now it’s a punchline with no set up and sounds really fuckin’ stupid.
GAGAGAGAGAGA! I will now count to 3 and then I am still the unprettiest TH-camr of all time. 1...2...3. GAGAGAGAGAGA!!! Thank you for your attention, dear juju
You know X-Men: Evolution had a scene from late in the series where all of the mutants' identities and powers were revealed and Jean Grey was cut from her basketball team and had all of her scholastic achievements taken away because it couldn't be determined whether or not she used her powers to cheat. I cared about her and her struggles more in that one scene than all of the X-Men movies combined.
As someone who has done berry picking as a part-time job, I am offended that you would assume that a berry bush could not significantly harm a person. Being in those fields… changes a man
To me, Days of the Future Past works as the perfect ending of the story. And Logan works as the realistic ending that hurts you the most. And First Class is truly a classic.
I’m really surprised Marcus didn’t make a joke about that scene in the very last movie where Professor X is trying to talk people down and Magneto says “You’re always sorry Charles. And there’s always a speech. But no one cares.” Love that line. Good joke material
Michael Fassbender as Magneto is probably my favourite comic book movie "villain" of all time. Ian McKellen was great, but Fassbender made me love the character in every film he was in.
23:42-24:10 this scene IS consistent with Magneto and I really like it. The interesting about Charles and Magneto is despite being arch enemies they still consider each other as best friends. At the end of the day both of them do want the same thing, mutant freedom. But while Charles wants equality for both mutants and humankind, Magneto wants mutants to be the dominant race. And despite that Magneto is willing to sacrifice Charles for his goals, he still cares for him and knows that his heart is in the right place. So when Pyro is belittling Charles saying he wanted to kill him, Magneto takes that personally because he still valued Charles for who he is and what he had done for both him and other mutants. It also shows that Pyro doesn’t share Magnetos ideals for mutant freedom, he only joined Magneto so he could continue bullying the weak.
... but pyro just said he wanted to kill him, the scene is really stupid because Magneto shouldn't been mad about that, and as Marcus says it's not subtle at all, there's been PLENTY of media that shows the villain somehow respecting the hero, the whole Joker/batman dynamic is like that And here Magneto should reply something like "he'd beat your ass" while smiling (and fancier wording because it's magneto), that would make sense because Magneto respects Charles but doesn't want him alive, heleaves him to die in a previous movie. As a comparison, if you've seen Jojos, Dio and Jonathan have this same dynamic, Dio is a crazy villain but doesn't want anyone to disrespect Jonathan's strength despite wanting to kill him, however Jonathan earned Dio's respect before and he openly says he wants to be the one who kills him, and in this trilogy it doesn't look like Magneto gives a shit about that, again he does respect Charles but Pyro isn't really disrespecting him, that's what should be written but the writers for this movie weren't smart enough to make the dialogue make sense Also, another detail, the relationship between Charles and magneto does look like one from best friends in the comics and in X-men movies after the third one, but not in this original trilogy, at least in my opinion I did feel like I started seeing the respect they had for each other in First class
I think the issue is more that the movies weren't able to strike a proper balance between Magneto and Charles's hero/villain dynamic and friendship. Especially in the third movie. Sometimes they feel like they're people on different sides of a conflict who respect each other, and sometimes it just feels like a standard hero vs. villain dynamic. It works for what it is, but I can definitely see how that line could be jarring since it's hard to really tell how Magneto wants to deal with Charles at times.
@@b_delta9725it’s very important to remember that even though magneto left Charles to die it was only after Stryker was about to use Charles as a weapon to kill every mutant on earth and Mags had rewired cerebro to target every human instead. This was more so a response to Magneto and Charles’ passiveness with humans allowing a human to manipulate two strong mutants into ending mutant kind through the use of a mutants ability. I don’t recall if Mags knew that lake Alkali was going down but even so would that have been a world that Charles would want to live in? I think A LOT of nuance is being ignored here.
I know, I got a little teary-eyed in theaters. The movies as a whole are hit or miss but the actors always do really well. Even when I think a scene is dumb or a character isn’t fleshed out they still deliver moment-to-moment
He had a few scenes in Apocalypse that were great acting performances. The Poland scene, the return to Aushwitz, the "My name is Magneto" scene all hit hard imo. Just a shame that the rest of the movie is bad
Skrulls was supposed to be introduced in X-MEN DARK PHOENIX, but Skrulls was already in Captain Marvel at that point, and due to characters rights and such, they had to change the Skrulls to shape shifting "Aliens" which leads to this confusing movie.
It wasn't even a rights issue. Fox and Marvel shared the rights to Skrulls. Fox could've kept them as Skrulls, but upon hearing Marvel was also using Skrulls, they chose to change the species of their shapeshifters in reshoots. They didn't _have_ to do that
“They retconned Quicksilver as Magneto’s son and it doesn’t make sense and it wasn’t planned for” that actually isn’t true since there is a line in Days of Future Past where after seeing Erik’s powers, Quicksilver says: “Ya know, my mom once knew a guy who could do that” and then Erik made a “oh f*ck” face
@@epicc1o1official quicksilver and Wanda are the children of magneto in some of the comics story lines so is it dumb to nod to that anyway? It's stupid to do nothing with it like they did in apocalypse but it's still kinda Canon
Just wanted to add to the Quicksilver/Magneto thing. Quicksilver is Magneto’s son, and they had actually made a line about this in Days of Future Past where he’s in the elevator with Magneto being like “You know, my mom once knew a guy who controlled metal…” It just feels different in Apocalypse because with a line that felt like a throwaway line that could easily be missed, it especially feels like they’re trying to rush for it in the story. Also I still think it’s weird that there’s apparently a line in DoFP where they hint that Wanda lives in the attic or basement. Though I think it’s because Age of Ultron was being made around the time and they couldn’t have both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver
@@TheDVDFreak Polaris is the little sister in the tutu. They mention a second sister other than Lorna, hinting to Wanda being upstairs, but that scene was only in the Rogue-cut of the film.
Ever since I was a kid that archangel scene in the third movie has always stuck with me, never have I seen a child mutilate themselves for parental approval and honestly it’s probably one of the most scary scenes ever, just the fact that a super hero movie has that as an opening is just jarring to me but in an interesting good way, more super hero movies should have creative hooks like that
You ever notice how the "Wolverine" nickname doesn't make sense with Jackman? He's called Wolverine because wolverine's are small, vicious little gremlins. That's totally what comes to mind when I see a tall, handsome man with a 5 o'clock shadow
Hollywood. They made Wolverine into the main character and heaven forbid they have a short leading man. How could anyone believe Jean would be attracted to him if he isn't tall?
The name sticks just because it sounds cool and that's pretty much it. Even if you don't know what a Wolverine is, the name sounds cool so you kinda just go along with it.
I love Cosmonaut's relationship's development with Magneto in all these movies. To consider him fascinating and kinda sexy, to being a sassy gay uncle, to not that threatening and inconsistent, to fucking amazing, to acceptable, to hilariously stupid and overdone.
X2, First Class and Days Of Future Past is definitely the holy trinity of the franchise. They got the closest to the feeling of a proper X Men story with great stakes and amazing character moments.
Two scenes always stand out for me in this franchise. As a kid, Nightcrawler showing his powers and watching how powerless the non-mutant population would be was pretty wow-ing for me. As an adult, it was the scene with Charles helping Erik tap into his full power. That scene still hits me every time I watch it. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy are truly amazing actors.
that Nightcrawler intro IS very sick. X2 seriously underrated film - most fans of the franchise seem to agree that it's the best of the original trilogy but compared to most other superhero films from that era it just doesn't get a lot of hype/nostalgia that it seriously deserves.
I especially love how they were playing "Dies Irae" from "Requiem in D Minor, K" by Mozart. It works not just because the song is sung in German, but also it was written for God. I just wish Nightcrawler acted more like that throughout the whole movie.
HARD agree. Really unfortunate that apparently the director (Bryan Singer) was such a pain in the ass to work with on the set of X2, Alan Cumming just did not want to work on superhero movies again. Such a shame and a waste of Cumming's talent imho. Made me sad as a kid to watch the 3rd X-Men movie only to realize Nightcrawler wasn't making a comeback.
I gotta say though, they did actually mention Magneto being Quicksilver’s dad in Days Of Future past. There is a line in which quicksilver says “My mum once knew someone who could do that” and Magneto has an oh shit face. But I do agree, even though it was mentioned before, its implemented horribly into Apocalypse
It doesn’t even go anywhere cause at the end of apocalypse he’s like I’ll tell him someday and back then I thought he’ll tell him in the next movie and in dark phoenix there’s no mention of it at all
@@Ninetailedfox5 It was canon. Marvel retconned it though as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch being empowered by the High Evolutionary because the movie division gave orders to spite Fox at all costs. I’m sure they’ll fix it now that Disney owns Fox movies; if they haven’t already.
46:27 that was already implied in days of future past. In the elevator scene, Quicksilver mentions that his mom once knew a guy who could control metal.
I agree, the way Days of Future Past left off was absolutely satisfying. I literally said "aw" out loud when I saw Cyclops was alive and everyone just looked happy.
One of most irritating things in these movies for me is that they never once got Jean Grey right. I’m not gonna act like she was a phenomenal character or anything but she served as a clear and important role in the team dynamic. She was like the counselor of the group, someone who could read minds and sometimes uses it to attack but more often to heal. She helps people out by listening to them and being the words of kind wisdom. That’s why the Phoenix saga left such an impact, not simply because it’s a cool cosmic villain who could destroy planets, but because Jean was someone so understanding and patient suddenly transforming into a power hungry mass murderer was very jarring to witness. But in the films even when she’s played well, she’s still either just the prize or crazy. Just because other characters are drawn to her for no reason doesn’t mean we will be drawn to her for no reason.
Having a more accurate Jean that falls apart from the Phoenix Force would actually be good if she was developed at all. There's a great scene from one of the comics where she's threatening people trying to attack the X-Mansion by saying that she can make them piss and shit themselves and destroy them from the inside out with her mind.
I always took 23:49 to be a sign of respect from Magneto. Like obviously he and Charles had completely different methods to fighting for mutantkind but he still recognized Charles as someone fighting the struggle so he didn't want to hear some punk kid disrespect him.
This series really was like the prototype MCU. Its level of plotholes is so off the charts, I think the actual MCU took notes while this was still a thing.
I love these movies for that reason lol. They’re so unbelievably inconsistent it’s kinda amazing Fox made as many movies as they did despite there being next to no continuity at all besides the first three movies. Also Kevin Feige was a producer for a lot of these movies so he definitely was taking notes before making an attempt himself.
@@sergiomendoza4850 That’s why my favorite movies in this series are basically standalone, like Logan and Deadpool. I can’t name a single MCU movie I can watch without wanting to watch some kind of prequel or sequel that adds onto the continuity perfectly.
The only difference is that a chunk of them are better than the entirety of the MCU… and a good chunk of them are worse as well lol. I honestly think Logan, First Class, and DoFP are genuinely better than the whole MCU. X1-2 are also better than most of the MCU in my personal opinion. Apocalypse and Origins Wolverine aren’t good but I enjoy them no matter how trashy and schlocky they are. Deadpool 1+2 and The Wolverine are good enough. Rest garbage. I honestly think the DCEU is similar to a lesser extent. The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Shazam are all better than your average MCU movie (TSS is better than all of them, in my opinion). I don’t like the Snyder films but at least they are interesting. Birds of Prey and Aquaman are good enough. Rest garbage, again.
It’s a small thing but magneto snapping at pyro wasn’t “now he cares” it was “this man who even though I disagree with that I’d still consider my best friend just died in front of me and this little twat is being disrespectful” In the comics they’ve always had a “best friends but enemies because we disagree on how to get from A to B” This was a totally find line and a recognition that magneto is hurt that it had to come to this to accomplish his mission
I think the point was more he left him to die in other situations, so they needed to really get across more than he was fine killing the other X-Men but always sought to just incapacitate Charles, OR focus on his liking mutants by having them focus on NEVER killing mutants and wanting to just knock them out. But ye in the first 3 films Magneto didn't care about mutants really, he just cared occasionally about taking over the world or something.
@@Barnesofthenorth whether he “left Charles to die” is a hard sell for me for a few reasons but aside from that What mutants did he actually kill in any of the movies? I’m struggling to think of a single one. Lots of humans, but I’m pretty sure he never killed any mutants. Even in the first movie against wolverine, the guy made of metal that he could objectively have instantaneously REKT, he just tosses his ass to the side, to get to rogue
@@liampowell5014 I think it'd have to be that Magneto has his own "code" on these things; yes, it's "leaving Charles to die" in X2, but it's also leaving him to accomplish what Magneto sees as the greatest good for mutantkind: eliminating humanity. In that sense, Magneto can still see Charles as "doing more for mutants" than anyone else, if just from a utilitarian perspective, combined with his lingering friendship with him that he can never fully shake. ...not to say it wasn't handled poorly overall, the third movie just blows, generally, but I can at least kind of see that part of it.
The Storm line was actually written by Whedon who did some script doctoring, and was supposed to be a payoff to a deleted scene. Fun fact, the train scene in Dark Phoenix was a last minute reshoot. Originally, an alien armada was going to appear for the final fight but they changed it because it was too similar to Captain Marvel's finale.
My biggest issue was Mystique’s benevolent attitude, when she’s a villainous henchwoman throughout the first trilogy, and a chaotic rogue through most of her comic ventures. It’s hardly believable that Jennifer’s Mystique was actually out for Trask on her own after being so impactful to the X-Men. We really should have gotten more villainy and melodrama, with a touch of anti-heroine from a Mystique in her prime. With her mimicry, lifespan, ambiguity, and chaotic nature I think she’s one of the most sublime plot devices to introduce mutants back into Marvel Cinema. She could have very easily been caught up in instances like Black Widow or Captain Marvel where her abilities are mistaken for Skrulls or espionage extraordinaire. As a shapeshifter, the entire arch and thrill of the idea is that they could be anyone at anytime doing the absolute worst as a doppelgänger and while Mystique uses major identities at key moments like Trask, Lady Deathstrike, and Senator Kelly, it’s for pivotal plot moments that support the greater, never for Mystique’s ulterior motive.
Days of Future Past is definitely on top of my list. Old characters returning, solid action, and high stakes especially the sentinels (God I love their movie version) serves as great final conclusion of the old trilogy
The reason Dark Phoenix worked in the comics is Jean was basically the protagonist of all those stories, and they built up to it. The movies first off do not build up to this at all, and just kinda make her randomly go crazy. Also the movies make the story about how it affects the men in her life while the comics were explicitly about her.
Also, in the comics it was the first time that kind of story had been done. In all the decades since, variants of the Dark Phoenix story have been done so much that it's lost it's value. WandaVision and Umbrella Academy did similar stories too, and much better than FoX-men did.
I agree. When I re-watch them it’s usually the first two of each series, since I like them the best and I find they make the most cohesive arc, plus Logan. Days of future past is the big-time cumulative action finale and Logan is the bittersweet closer. And yes, I do re-watch the x-men movies enough to have a comprehensive viewing plan.
I saw Dark Phoenix in theaters. It was my first X-men movie I had ever seen and I was drunk as hell with my friend who was a die-hard fan of the series. We were dying of laughter the entire time.
This video gave the last push i needed to start reading comic books, ever since this video was uploaded i read all of chris claremont's original xmen run and most of the additional x series during his run. I just wanted to thank you, i am so happy i started reading comic books, its a really fantastic world.
Apocalypse has a soft spot in my heart just because I loved quicksilver, but I will NEVER forgive the directors for setting up an arc for him (always being to late to tell Magneto he’s his son) only for him to chicken out so Mystique almost dying can be the push that forces Erik to switch sides. Then the next movie they literally throw him to the sidelines, and his arc never gets explored again. Like, excuse me? I have horrible taste in movies and really low standards, but even I’m annoyed with how that was handled. Mans was literally carrying the movie on his back and got nothing for it.
My 27 year old cousin (who was like a brother to me) passed away due to a heart attack yesterday. He was a HUGE fan of your channel and would absolutely have loved this video. I'll remember you every time I watch Cosmonaut Vitor! Love you forever !
I think “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is my favorite X-Men movie, and one of my favorite superhero films ever made. With the footage Marcus chose to include, I assume he watched the Rogue Cut, which is the superior cut IMO
Hell yea bro I saw DOFP like 5 times in theaters when it came out but for some reason people don’t really bring it up when they talk about the good Fox movies
@@lucaswilliams7280 Yep! I already love the theatrical cut, but I love seeing more Magneto, Iceman, and Rogue! We also get some other scenes, including one where Mystique breaks into the X-Mansion, finds Beast, they have a sec scene, and then she sabotages Cerebro. There’s also an additional shot that calls back to First Class when young Magneto breaks into the Pentagon to get his helmet; we see a new shot of Erik looking at the coin that he pushed through Shaw’s head.
i wish DOFP would’ve been the end of the series. it felt like such an amazing ending, even if the previous movies were mediocre at most. apocalypse and dark phoenix were definitely insane let downs, but we got logan ig
"He goes bald because he absorbs too much power" Well that explains why all the most powerful characters are bald. Professor X, One Punch Man, Thanos, and Johnny Sins.
That Archangel scene had me FUCKED UP as a kid, still bothers me now. Not big into body horror but I think it was the pain and anguish he was in that got to me the most.
The reason that X3 has two different stories going is that Bryan Singer, director of the previous two films, had plans to do the Phoenix story but turned down X3 to make Superman Returns. When Brett Ratner came onto direct, he was way more interested in the cure story. Somewhere online you can read what the original version of X3 was and it's way better.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 for the longest time I was confused which one was bad, because I would hear it and think "okay that's the bad one" and dismiss the other, thank you for clearing that up
I have to say, I'm new to this channel and I'm really loving a lot of his reactions, especially his response to the "yellow spandex" line. Why would Cyclops use that as a quip in this universe when there is never a scene where Cyclops catches Logan in yellow spandex? It's one of those lines written purely for the trailer without any contextual wit.
In regards to Marcus' hottake about Hugh Jackman, when I originally heard that Hugh Jackman was really tall, I also thought that he would make for a shite Wolverine. And then I saw him in action, and I was sold. He was so committed to the character and did such a great job of acting that I completely forgot that Wolverine is supposed to be 5'2".
The funniest part of First Class (my favorite) is that James McAvoy shaved his head as soon as he got the part of Professor X, only to find out that it was an origin story and that he would still have hair. Thus, he is wearing a pretty convincing wig the entire film.
I think I'll always love X-Men 1 purely because of how unlike other superhero movies it is. I totally get the disappointment over how much it feels compelled to change stylistically; but for some reason, maybe just because of how overplayed fanservice/nostalgia bait is in modern movies I just miss that old, overly self aware approach to superhero movies where they tried to take everything seriously.
I disagree about Magneto's plan in the first movie being stupid. Considering how mutants are mistreat by humans and suffer prejuice just for being different, it makes sense that Magneto biggest scheme of revenge would involve turn the world leaders into mutants, turning them into the same persons they fear and hate.
Magneto sees mutants as the next step in human evolution, so I'd say it tracks that his top 2 plans would be complete human genocide, and turning all humans into mutants.
As someone whose been recently reading the older comics (Claremont run). I really hate how they portrayed Storm. Only in the 3rd movie she showed some leadership skills. Even then they didn’t focus on her as much like in the comics. She got multiple arcs that showed her strengths and weaknesses as a leader and character. She didn’t have much depth in the movies…
agreed at first i like wolverine now i hate that character same as batman... like everybody want to put spotlight on those popular character and undermind other important character too...
@@Salty010 Oh don't get me wrong, I love Wolverine, and I get why he's popular, but anything with the name X-Men stamped on top of it should be about the team, not any one hero. Fox dropped the ball.
Storm was arguably the main character of X-Men (the best-selling Marvel comic at the time) in the mid-to-late '80s. The fact that all people know her from is these movies / "she was married to Black Panther" is a travesty.
23:54 Honestly, I didn't think that moment was that bad. As much as he wanted Charles dead, Magneto still respected Charles' labor for mutantkind, even if he didn't agree with his methods.
It's not so much that it's bad, it's that it's inconsistent. I like the scene because it's more accurate to how Magneto is in the comics, but in the movies he's shown that he doesn't really care about Charles at all.
Yeah, I agree it's inconsistent with the rest of the movie, but I guess I just like it because it's one of the few lines I could actually see Magneto saying.
@@thewitchbasket I didn't find it inconsistent. Magneto cares about and respects Charles as a person, but in the original X-Men trilogy he has absolutely no intention of letting Charles stop his plans in any way or shape. So, if Charles has to be taken off the board for the greater good, he's not going to cry about it, but he's not going to let some snot-nosed punk talk down about him either.
It'd be nice to see him cover the Superman movies. Especially the old Christopher Reeves ones as it sometimes feels like they've been forgotten about despite being fairly influential for their time.
Actually, just one correction, Quicksilver was Magneto's son even in the Days of a future past, He saiys that his mom knew a guy that could control metal and Magento is thinking a little about. Overall it was a plot thrown in the series.
Sure, but ultimately so little is done with this, it ultimately should have been left out of the story. It still feels like they put that in there just to make comic fans happy even though the idea of movie Magneto being Quicksilver’s dad doesn’t really fit THIS universe
Magneto actually explained why he wasn't too worried about Senator Kelly escaping. He literally tells him "Where would you go? Who would take you now that you're one of us?" Turning someone who loathed mutants into one was punishment enough. Also, I don't think Rogue is really that overpowered. Her ability to take powers from mutants is cool but she has to get close enough to touch them first. And in X2, they were going up against humans, which meant her powers weren't really that useful (the only time they came in handy was Pyro went on a rampage and she had to stop him).
can't rogue kill humans as well with simply touching them? hence in the movies her wanting to lose her abilities since she can't be intimate in any form with either side of the population?
@@redbigun yeah but rogues powers are still kinda overpowered when explored properly, just cuz the movies didn't use it to it's fullest doesn't mean it can't get crazy.
I've seen The Last Stand like, 15 times over my lifetime and I forgot Colossus was in this movie. His cameo in X2 left more of an impact on me than his appearance in this movie.
If you ever feel like it, I recommend getting around to the "Rogue Cut" of Days of Future Pass. It's surprisingly quite different to the actual cinematic version, not Snyder cut level different, but different enough. It's highly debated whether it is or not better than the original version, some people claiming it's miles better while others claiming it's quite pitiful in comparison, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it at some point. :)
I loved this version. I hired a cinema room for my birthday and threw that Blu-ray on for all my friends to watch with me hahahahaha. I believe the director said the Rogue side plot would have slowed down the momentum of the story which is why we got the original version.
I think he watched the Rogue Cut since he showed some scenes of Rogue being rescued and Iceman dying then and there as well as that steamy scene between Hank and Raven. Personally I like the original cut better since the whole Rogue subplot comes out of nowhere for me and I like how Iceman died as one of the last defending Charles, Kitty, Logan, etc.
He did watch the rogue cut. When hes talking about the parts that slowed down the pacing he used scenes from the rogue cut to illustrate his point and hes right in that regard
Even though I love Hugh Jackman I agree with people not liking him The reason why he is called the Wolverine is not because of his claws or his healing factor...but because he's short, stinky, agressive and he loves to pick a fight with the biggest and strongest of them...like a real Wolverine It's the essence of the character and that was nowhere to be seen in these movies
I was actively rooting for Sabretooth when they battled in Origins. Would have been 🔥 if he slashed Wolverine's throat, eviscerated and spilled his guts out, only for him to heal on the spot 😆🤌
Jonathan Hickman's run on the X-men is my favorite because It creates a whole new foundation for the X-men. They don't just become their own nation, they become a world power. Hickman is a huge fan of Grant Morrison's run.
I'm about to say, it may have been a small throwaway line but I vaguely remember the scene where they were on the elevator and Quicksilver mentions that his mom "knew a guy that could do that [move metal like Magneto]" Which admittedly isn't a lot but it definitely opens the door to Magneto and Quicksilver being related.
@@MikeP828 To be fair that does open up a lot of other questions/criticisms. Like considering how old Quicksilver is, he looks like a teenager in Days of the Future past, which only took place a Decade after First Class. That means Magneto met and slept with an American woman before he even met Charles, while he was on his revenge quest to find Shaw. Which isn't completely impossible but just seems weird for his character at the time. The timelines in these movies are just weird lol
36:30 It irks me that everyone gets the thing about the serum wrong. Beast says he used THE SERUM THAT HE USES TO SUPPRESS HIS MUTATION to create it. His Mutation was initially just his Beast feet, and in First Class he wanted to suppress that and have normal feet. He used Mystique's DNA to do it with her cell altering ability to physically rearrange the structure of his feet, and it backfired on him at first and enhanced his mutant cells which progressed his mutation's evolutionary goal. So when it comes to Charles' spine, he used a similar serum, which has the same effect. It suppresses Charles' mutation (his Mind powers), but also alters the bone structure in his spine so his nerves and spinal cord are put back together and it enables him to use his lower body again. It makes absolute sense, but the explanation isn't as deep as it should have been. TLDR; Beast's X-Gene suppression Serum uses Mystique's DNA to rearrange and transform cells, and Charles uses a modified version to repair his spine, which supresses his X Gene as a side effect
After years of puzzling over it, I finally came to the conclusion that the prequel movies (after First Class) were brought down by one singular thing: casting Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. It wasn't her or her performance, it was the actual role she was given. Jennifer Lawrence's star power essentially required her to be one of the main focal points, and Mystique is not a role that should've been that. Everyone's weird obsession with her had to be forced, in addition to the fact that she's someone that the studio wanted us to see, playing a character who either needed to be in full makeup/prosthetics or portrayed by someone else. It didn't make sense. I keep thinking to myself that if they'd just deleted January Jones entirely and had Lawrence play Emma, then everything would've made sense-- the flippy/floppy between the hero/villainous side but ultimately being a hero, everyone's obsession with her, her leading the X-Men on and off, all of those are characteristics of Emma. I hate these movies.
fun fact: David Hayter, the voice of Snake from Metal Gear Solid, wrote a version of the script of X1. I say _a_ version, because there were multiple drafts written by a variety of different writers. It also had a pretty rough production.
I remember reading that the whole Storm “What happens to a toad when it’s struck” was supposed to be her quip but they only put one in the movie so it’s just a one off
"For some reason Nightcrawler disappears after this movie." There are two reasons for that. 1) Alan Cumming didn't enjoy the four-hour makeup/prosthetic application process, and wasn't even sure he'd come back for the next one. 2) When Brett Ratner took over X3, script changes made Nightcrawler's part so minimal, that Cumming really didn't see a point in subjecting himself to that process again, and bowed out. The tie-in X3 game explains his absence as him being a peaceful mutant, not a fighter, so he leaves the X-Men or something like that.
11:20 Toad was supposed to ask rhetorical questions about toads, as a taunt to his opponents, during the movie. This was scrapped but Storm's line was left in the script.
I myself agree that Jackman's height was a problem. In the comics, wolverine is the same height as Danny Devito. It was funny to also notice that in the comics, wolverine inexplicably started being drawn taller and taller without any explanation.
If you want to be truly comic accurate to Wolverine though, there's no actor that exists that looks like that. A man who's 5'2" and like 200+lbs of bulking muscle. Even just the height alone, there's hardly any actors THAT short. The best they could do would be someone like Tom Hardy, who still would be like 7 inches too tall and wouldn't look as muscled as Wolverine is drawn.
Wolverine's height is literally the only legitimate critique, everybody knows he's way too tall. I took a double take the first time I saw Cyclops stare UP at him.
The problem is that the height is an actual integral part of his character in the comics. He's _literally_ an angry little ball of rage, and everyone is constantly commenting on it. It would be like if they cast a super tall but lanky dude as Colossus. It's just gonna feel kind of _off_ the whole time if you're at all familiar with the character. They could have at least attempted some perspective shots to make Jackman look a bit shorter.
I call bullshit. Why? Well that’s because The FIRST TIME These characters stand face to face in X-MEN 2000, Cyclops didn’t “STARE UP” at Wolverine at all. Please PAY ATTENTION! Bryan singer actually (foolishly btw) had almost EVERY CHARACTER who was standing next to Hugh Jackman on an elevated platform! Watch it again ya fibber! You’ll notice that when Wolverine says “…Cyclops right?….” (Grabs him by his shirt collars) “…You wanna get out of my way?” You’ll realize that WOLVERINE is LOOKING UP at Cyclops, because James Marsden is standing on a platform to SEEM taller than Jackman! Don’t make a claim without details to back your shit up. Jackman isn’t a golden god, so don’t get me wrong. He was never my choice for Wolverine…and YES. HES TOO TALL, AGREED. …but if you don’t even realize that your point is completely INVALID as you present it, then maybe you should pay more attention before spouting out uninformed bull crap.
@@GoddoDoggo they did….are you kidding me? Not in all the movies, but in the FIRST MOVIE they did. If you paid attention you’d notice Wolverine grabbing Scott while looking UP at him. They had him standing lower on that first movie. So while your point of him being too tall is valid and I agree….you don’t deserve credit because you call for a change that THEY FUCKING MADE. So it’s on you for not paying attention. Watch it again and talk to me.
On that bit about Magneto's inconsistency regarding Charles and his death, I always understood it be more along the lines of he accepts that Charles may need to eventually die, but he has no malice in his heart for one of his oldest friends. So he gets mad at Johnny not because Johnny was talking about killing Charles, but because Johnny seemed to resent Charles with how he said it.
"I'm watching a child mutilate himself. Not saying it's a bad thing, I just didn't expect it." - Marcus, 2021 Hey, I've seen other people update their comments to thank folks for all the likes. But that is not me. Suckle at the teat of my clever ness.
Honestly the dark, graphic scenes in these movies really separate it from Mcu. Maybe I'm just tired of seeing mcu movies, but I kinda like that about it.
Not to nitpick No way home is the mcu Spider-man film I like but I hate there was no blood of green goblin or any of these fights. I know goblin like Spider-Man is "enhanced"but come on...-you have films/shows like Daredevil with that "I BEAT YOU" monologue/fight and Nobody.
I had no problem with them not recasting the parts. But all it would have taken was some subtle age up make-up, like just dye the dude’s hair gray or something. And there was seriously no reason for Dark Phoenix to take place 30 years after First Class. WTF. Once they got to the 1980s that was as far as they could believably take the time skips
I still consider First Class to be my favourite superhero film. I’ve seen it so many times as it was often rebroadcast on freeview TV and I’ve never not had a great time watching it. Yeah there are maybe better made superhero films out there, but it’s my top for sure.
Another proof how important editor´s department is.
Storm: hey editor, did you even look in the mirror before you came to work today? Like what is that shirt?
Editor: so you have chosen... death.
That rivalry must have been a thing from Joss Whedon's original script, and so the "You know what happens to a toad" line is actually one of only 2 lines of dialogue that were written by Joss Whedon and survived in the final cut.
@@glendarjj3991 Damn, this is one deep cut reference of suicide squad.

I have a feeling he’s gonna come back for the MCU and that moment is gonna be insane
Magneto having respect for Charles was always present in the films so it made perfect sense why he didn't allow Pyro to just disrespect him
Yeah there's no inconsistency here. Just complex human emotions.
It feels very one sided, and the as a result the line felt weird to me
the same thing happens in yu yu hakusho, kuwabara hates yusuke and wanna beat him... but if you talk bad about yusuke... I will get a beatdown

@@oscarm4095 What about Dafoe as Green Goblin?
Literally, charles visits him in prison as respect for an old friend, he's not there to mock an enemy
Magneto: destroys a hospital, but is defeated
Charles on the next day: hey buddy, chess match?
... but pyro just said he wanted to kill him, the scene is really stupid because Magneto shouldn't been mad about that, and as Marcus says it's not subtle at all, there's been PLENTY of media that shows the villain somehow respecting the hero, the whole Joker/batman dynamic is like that
And here Magneto should reply something like "he'd beat your ass" while smiling (and fancier wording because it's magneto), that would make sense because Magneto respects Charles but doesn't want him alive, heleaves him to die in a previous movie.
As a comparison, if you've seen Jojos, Dio and Jonathan have this same dynamic, Dio is a crazy villain but doesn't want anyone to disrespect Jonathan's strength despite wanting to kill him, however Jonathan earned Dio's respect before and he openly says he wants to be the one who kills him, and in this trilogy it doesn't look like Magneto gives a shit about that, again he does respect Charles but Pyro isn't really disrespecting him, that's what should be written but the writers for this movie weren't smart enough to make the dialogue make sense
Also, another detail, the relationship between Charles and magneto does look like one from best friends in the comics and in X-men movies after the third one, but not in this original trilogy, at least in my opinion I did feel like I started seeing the respect they had for each other in First class
I think A LOT of nuance is being ignored here.

that Nightcrawler intro IS very sick.
You don't know what underrated means

I gotta say though, they did actually mention Magneto being Quicksilver’s dad in Days Of Future past. There is a line in which quicksilver says “My mum once knew someone who could do that” and Magneto has an oh shit face.
But I do agree, even though it was mentioned before, its implemented horribly into Apocalypse
It doesn’t even go anywhere cause at the end of apocalypse he’s like I’ll tell him someday and back then I thought he’ll tell him in the next movie and in dark phoenix there’s no mention of it at all

There's a great scene from one of the comics where she's threatening people trying to attack the X-Mansion by saying that she can make them piss and shit themselves and destroy them from the inside out with her mind.
they upgraded Wolverine by taking away from Jean Gray i guess
Kevin feige helped on a few. He definitely did take notes.
@@sergiomendoza4850 That’s why my favorite movies in this series are basically standalone, like Logan and Deadpool. I can’t name a single MCU movie I can watch without wanting to watch some kind of prequel or sequel that adds onto the continuity perfectly.
Personally this felt a lot more thematic than most of the MCU, broken continuity and all.
It’s a small thing but magneto snapping at pyro wasn’t “now he cares” it was “this man who even though I disagree with that I’d still consider my best friend just died in front of me and this little twat is being disrespectful”
In the comics they’ve always had a “best friends but enemies because we disagree on how to get from A to B”
This was a totally find line and a recognition that magneto is hurt that it had to come to this to accomplish his mission
@@Barnesofthenorth whether he “left Charles to die” is a hard sell for me for a few reasons but aside from that
What mutants did he actually kill in any of the movies? I’m struggling to think of a single one. Lots of humans, but I’m pretty sure he never killed any mutants. Even in the first movie against wolverine, the guy made of metal that he could objectively have instantaneously REKT, he just tosses his ass to the side, to get to rogue
They have a complex relationship.
@@Dangolbustedman What reasons is it a hard sell out of curiosity? He straight up leaves him to die in X2

As a shapeshifter, the entire arch and thrill of the idea is that they could be anyone at anytime doing the absolute worst as a doppelgänger
and while Mystique uses major identities at key moments like Trask, Lady Deathstrike, and Senator Kelly, it’s for pivotal plot moments that support the greater, never for Mystique’s ulterior motive.
Days of Future Past is definitely on top of my list. Old characters returning, solid action, and high stakes especially the sentinels (God I love their movie version) serves as great final conclusion of the old trilogy
That movie is so intense beginning to end

The reason Dark Phoenix worked in the comics is Jean was basically the protagonist of all those stories, and they built up to it. The movies first off do not build up to this at all, and just kinda make her randomly go crazy. Also the movies make the story about how it affects the men in her life while the comics were explicitly about her.
Also, in the comics it was the first time that kind of story had been done. In all the decades since, variants of the Dark Phoenix story have been done so much that it's lost it's value.
WandaVision and Umbrella Academy did similar stories too, and much better than FoX-men did.

I mean it’s still stupid but there’s logic behind it it’s not good logic buy
Magneto sees mutants as the next step in human evolution, so I'd say it tracks that his top 2 plans would be complete human genocide, and turning all humans into mutants.
As someone whose been recently reading the older comics (Claremont run). I really hate how they portrayed Storm. Only in the 3rd movie she showed some leadership skills. Even then they didn’t focus on her as much like in the comics. She got multiple arcs that showed her strengths and weaknesses as a leader and character. She didn’t have much depth in the movies…

Yeah Magneto has that look of "Wait a second..."

Gotta check it out. Maybe I'll like it more than the original, which was nowhere near as good as First Class imo.

Unfortunately you are right, it worked well in days of future past with mystique then after that it went down hill
I 100% understand what you mean, and I think you are right.
Lawrence herself didn’t even enjoy the role because of how hard the body suit was to wear. Which is why they killed her off in dark Phoenix

Interesting to know, thank you!
Only 4 hours lmao
“I’ve had a few friends try to steal this hoodie.”
It’s okay Marcus, you can say Megan.

“I never really loved Hugh Jackman as Wolverine”
i think that’s the hottest take marcus has ever said in his channel history
Yeah wow
I’m willing to think that the Jojos takes got him more flamed
I genuinely feel like no one else can play Wolverine
Nah he write.
and he just kinda threw it in there too hah
11:20 Toad was supposed to ask rhetorical questions about toads, as a taunt to his opponents, during the movie. This was scrapped but Storm's line was left in the script.
“I Never really loved Hugh Jackman was Wolverine”
Me:”Well it was nice knowing you, Marcus”
I myself agree that Jackman's height was a problem. In the comics, wolverine is the same height as Danny Devito. It was funny to also notice that in the comics, wolverine inexplicably started being drawn taller and taller without any explanation.
I think it’s just artists without research. Beast is 5’11” but artists constantly draw him taller than 6 foot characters.
@@spfan68 Kevin hart is 5”3
@@mikesmith145 Well I said there's hardly any actors that short. I didn't say 0. And Kevin Hart does not look nearly as buff as Wolverine is drawn.
I mean know you said, Danny Devito would be a pretty perfect casting of Wolverine in the MCU
X-Men: Days of Future Past has done the thing before Spiderman: No Way Home, bringing live version of the previous incarnations together.
I love apocalypse for 2 reasons
1. If you embrace the goofiness of the movie, it can be really fun
2. Limited edition M&M’s
Wolverine's height is literally the only legitimate critique, everybody knows he's way too tall. I took a double take the first time I saw Cyclops stare UP at him.
yes bro
The problem is that the height is an actual integral part of his character in the comics. He's _literally_ an angry little ball of rage, and everyone is constantly commenting on it. It would be like if they cast a super tall but lanky dude as Colossus. It's just gonna feel kind of _off_ the whole time if you're at all familiar with the character. They could have at least attempted some perspective shots to make Jackman look a bit shorter.
@@GoddoDoggo did the opposite. framed it and had him wear elevator shoes so he would be tall as ryan reynolds
Yeah I always took it as something like that, seemed easy to interpret but I guess not
Erik actually likes Charles, he is just against his ideologies.

Hey, I've seen other people update their comments to thank folks for all the likes. But that is not me. Suckle at the teat of my clever ness.
Honestly the dark, graphic scenes in these movies really separate it from Mcu. Maybe I'm just tired of seeing mcu movies, but I kinda like that about it.
@@glendarjj3991 facts, I can't really watch mcu stuff that much anymore. I like gore in movies like daredevil, punisher and xmen stuff etc.
This is the best setence taken out of context.
@@boy_wxnder2662 Toby likes gore so he's not really apart of the mcu family. He's also divorced so he's not really apart of his own family.
20:50 I’m pretty sure every X-men movie starts out with the “In the not too distant future” line to make it feel like X-Men “could” happen.
The characters never aging in the new movies really did drive me nuts for a while.
Likewise
I had no problem with them not recasting the parts. But all it would have taken was some subtle age up make-up, like just dye the dude’s hair gray or something. And there was seriously no reason for Dark Phoenix to take place 30 years after First Class. WTF. Once they got to the 1980s that was as far as they could believably take the time skips
They put no effort in continuity once days of future past happened
@@loreaver3882 yep
the score of first class is also so amazing like especially how they use "Frankenstein's Monster" as magnito's pain theme
As soon as I watched the film back then I downloaded Frankenstein’s monster and I listendes to it maybe a tiny bit too much
I still consider First Class to be my favourite superhero film. I’ve seen it so many times as it was often rebroadcast on freeview TV and I’ve never not had a great time watching it. Yeah there are maybe better made superhero films out there, but it’s my top for sure.
I think ending a rewatch on Days of Future Past is the best way to go. It wraps everything up and brings the old and new versions together so well.
I laughed unreasonably hard at calling Xavier “Charlie”
Me too
Did that make him "Charlie X"?
