- Assembling a motorcycle carrier hitch rack that will allow me to transport my motorcycle on the back of my SUV. The height of my SUV's tow hitch caused the ramp to be too steep. To solve this, I purchased a 6" drop hitch to lower the receiver. I then had to drill a new hitch pin hole in the carrier.
After researching several ramps, I selected this one due to it's weight rating and sturdy build. It's made of thick steel and is quite heavy. While I don't plan on taking many long trips with my bike in tow, I didn't want anything too flimsy.

I have the black widow and find it sticks out way too far. Thinking of shortening the square receiving tube to bring it closer to the vehicle. Thoughts?
I think you can shorten the receiving tube, but I would only make it short enough so that: it gets the bike closer to the rear of the car and that tube is in as far as it can go without interfering with anything.
Is there a way you can increase the weight limit on this setup?
I'm not sure! The tow hitch on my SUV has a tongue weight of 640-660 lbs, and the carrier I used has it's own rating of 600lbs. This means I'm limited to a 600lb bike. I have not looked at how the hitch is secured to the frame, but you might be able to weld in additional gussets and supports. As for the carrier, I have heard of people inserting a solid square bar inside the 2" tube to prevent flexing and to add strength. But I'm not sure how you would calculate the new capacity. Best of luck - and be safe!
