"you need more faith to believe that a man didn't rose from the dead than to believe that he did"
this logic is so great, you can't even follow it.

    • @tracyavent-costanza346
      @tracyavent-costanza346 ปีที่แล้ว

the mere implication that "logic" is somehow involved in "concluding" that someone rose from the dead, just
implies a fundamental lack of grasp of what a LOGICAL DEDUCTIVE ARGUMENT looks like.
IMHO the biggest problem with such "logic" is "starting with unfounded premises" which appears to have been
at least exemplified by a "logical deduction" offered by saint thomas aquinas.
And that same sermonette of his, appeared to praise or idolize Aristotle. Ari of course was famous for
"applying philosophy" to "solve" some question or other.
But Ari was NOT known to actually examine PHYSICAL EVIDENCE to either support or refute some tacit presumption he had
made about the nature of the question in the first place.
Apparently Aristotle wanted to think about things but not get his hands dirty.
Really as a side-question, I wonder if Plato regarded Aristotle as one of his arguably failed students.
In the larger arc of history, we can note that Aristotle is not especially noted as a major contributor to the rise of science.
His implied logic DOES HOWEVER appear popular among "church" theologians.
And in Frank Turek's arguments I see the rather prominent ghosts of it.

WRT "...Do you believe in objective evil?..."
we would first have to vaguely agree on what such a phrase means.
second, personally I have little or no use at all for a phrase like "believe in" since apologetics tends to use it as an excuse to posit some implied premise without having to justify it.
Instead, emotional attachment (especially the kind that buddhism warns about) is implied to be a justification that others should somehow find compelling.
      Not this viewer.
You have to cite reasons for claiming a premise to be true or your deductive argument is a house built upon beach sand.
And even then, I reserve the right to critically evaluate whatever premise my opponent might be claiming I should hold.

One reason he gave as to "what about people who never heard" was pretty bad and I remember it still. I once had a conversation with a DEEPLY religious woman I used to work with. I told her that, one of the MANY reasons why the Millennials, Gen Z and Alpha are walking away from Christianity is that, at least in the US, there are now roughly 45,000 different denominations of it you can belong to that are all in direct competition with each other. My former coworker then said: “It’s not 45,000 different schools of thought, it’s 45,000 different expressions of the SAME idea”. So I then asked her: “So, what would a Catholic, a Mormon and a Jehovah’s Witness sit down and actually agree on”? She then responded with: “Well, I don’t think any of those are REALLY Christians”. I bust out laughing. I told her that, if you were to put those 3 groups combined, they totaled to about 1.27 BILLION people. 1/8th of the human race. Don’t let Turek fool you. They (the Christians) couldn’t disagree with each other harder if they tried. They argue about EVERYTHING. Once he can nail down which of the 45,000 different schools of thought I’m supposed to believe, then and ONLY then, he can attempt to sell that to anyone…..

@@vadouis-rt3of OR, and stay with me on this one, MAYBE, someone in the room when the Bible was being copied and pasted together and the Council of Nicaea, already knew that MANY people would take one look at the claims of the book and call BS on it. So, they needed to put in automatic defenses to make sure that people didn’t question the logical fallacies or inaccuracies or contradictions within and always default to “faith” or future apologetics. So, lines such as that are created to make sure that, when problems with the Bible come up, there’s yet another automatic defense mechanism to be called on to convince the person who buys into it to NOT think, NOT question and to not call BS. All 3 Monotheistic religions have these mechanisms in place to make sure you don’t question but that does NOT in fact, prove it’s “authenticity”. Cults all around the world to this day use the same type of mechanisms to make sure that you NEVER question dear leader, even if their teachings of prophecies don’t happen or don’t line up with reality to keep you constantly chasing the carrot on the string. There are countless mechanisms like this in Christianity.
1: The BS line you threw at me.
2: You were NEVER really a TRUE Christian because once you’re a REAL Christian, you turn away from your faith.
      3. Demons are getting into your mind and trying to sabotage your faith.
      4. It’s the Devil trying to lead you astray.
      5. You’re just going to the wrong church or reading the wrong interpretation of the Bible.
      6. You didn’t pray hard enough or believe hard enough.
      7. But but but, look at the world and the wars and violence, that PROVES it’s true.
      8. If you ever leave the faith after knowing about it or being apart of it, you’re now going to be labeled an “apostate” or some other garbage just like it, basically saying you’re now less than the gum on the bottom of my shoe and
      9. Because of #8, the believers in the group are now to SHUN you forever UNITL you come back into the fold…
There are endless more just like this that I have no doubt you have used yourself….
For one example of the problem with this line of thinking: The science in the Bible is taken from the Jews from the Babylonian during the Babylonian Captivity of 600 BC. Best science on the planet at the time, but we’ve learned a thing or two about a thing or two since then and the overwhelming majority of the science and claims about the universe have been proven to be inaccurate. The earth is NOT 10,000 years old, it’s 4.5 billion. There is ZERO evidence of a world wide flood. Etc.
I’ll give you another example: In Matthew 27:52-53, it says the bodies of the dead saints rose from the graves and were walking around the “holy city”. And yet, we cannot, to this day, find a single other historian that backs that claim up. Not one. I guess the Zombie Apocalypse and people resurrecting from the dead was something of a banality at the time because no one outside of the Bible, felt compelled to comment on that. Not…..one.
Right then and there, you’re now at an impasse. If you truly believe that God gave ALL of knowledge and wisdom to the writers of the Bible and it is without error and to question one or all of the now debunked claims about science or lack of corroborating evidence found in the Bible is to turn into a “reprobate mind” as you’re calling me, then you can just close your eyes, cover your ears and pretend that this can be somehow explained away with an ocean of apologetics. For me, when the claims of the Bible does not comply with our reality, we have the tough obligation to abandon such things and to accept the reality as it is given to us and what it has to teach us.
Sorry bud, but you don’t get to use the Bible to prove the Bible. That’s NOT how proof works, just like the Jews don’t get to use the Torah to prove the Torah, or the Muslims using the Quran to prove the Quran. Just some food for thought….
“What is the difference between a cult and a religion”?
In a cult, there is someone up top who KNOWS that everything in the cult is BS. In a religion…..that person died a long time ago”…….

This is true. God doesn't need anyone for anything. The opposition to God desperately needs something to argue with though. The love of sin will look anywhere for justification and validation. I suppose the opposition has a better chance to think outside of the love of sin if debating another human rather than a rock. Notice how people come to and ask the apologist? The apologist is merely trying to help understanding by answering a question to his/her best ability. Take it or leave it, but the apologist isn't seeking validation from man nor is he thinking that he somehow validates God's existence. Ultimately, he is all too aware that he isn't needed in the slightest for God's will. He is the one that needs God. The will and creation still stands without him.

If a statement is an accurate representation of reality we call it true, else it is not true or only partially true. Just because language allows us to define abstract concepts it doesn’t mean those concepts exist independently in the real world.

Later he was influenced by close friends back into his earlier belief.
      In Mere Christianity he presented
his defence of Christian theology, including his notable "Liar, lunatic, or Lord" trilemma.
This is a concept that had Lewis been around to talk to modern biblical scholars he would have been exposed to clear arguments against that idea. Of course we'll never know for sure how Lewis would have responded to bible scholars such as bart erhman, but I like to think he would have considered the evidene .

My sister is one of the smartest people I know. She also has studied philosophy in University. Her brain is sharp and quick as a sword, whatever topic we are discussing. And we like to talk about everything - philosophy, nature, linguistics, history, animal behaviour, human behaviour...
But she believes in Christian God, and those couple of times I have tried to question the logics of her belief, she changes and just says "I believe because I want to and it makes me feel good snd safe".
She does not use her wonderful brain and logic there. I don't want to make her mad or sad or unsafe, so I never question her faith anymore.
We are both far too old to start having sibling rivalry, which we never even had when we were children.
So, I think people just use "different brains" when they handle their religion.
I am few years younger than she is, and started to doubt Christianity in early teens. Decades before "New atheism", whatever it is, so I guess I am an old atheist. I liked to read, so I read every book in our house, also big parts of the Bible. And it just did not make sense. I thought God was so petty and incompetenet, and not good at all. Even Jesus was not allways very nice to his followers and other people.
Our Scandinavian family was not very religious, we had Christmas table Bible reading and we were taught to read a small prayer when going to bed, that's all. So the question of religion was not the most important thing in my teen age mind at all.
When I was 15, I went to a traditional "Bible camp", sort of, after which there was a Confirmation in a church. That is very common in our country, even nowadays, and when I was young it was almost the rule and tradition for every family.
On that camp I was quite surprised and upset. "Do these people really believe this all is TRUE?"
I did not know what to do, I was so alone there. I knew nobody So I decided to just close my mind from the feelings they tried to make us feel and listened the teaching using my brain. I was a good student, learning was easy for me, so I acted like a role player long before role playing was a thing. I gave the right answers, but in my mind I was just waiting to get out of that island. Yes, we were on a small island! I decided to think everything through when I am out of that "one truth" -place.
And so I did, and found out I don't believe in God - and that there are many people who really really do believe.

I used to hold Frank in such high regard (even still have a .pdf copy of I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist that I got years ago as a believer, partially for nostalgia and partially for deconstruction) While I don't find that he is devoid of any wisdom at all, its pretty rare that he will ever say anything of actual value. It was actually because of people like Frank that I was able to abandon theism in the way that I did, especially when you look at his first point.
I was told by Frank and others like him that atheists will tell you "there is no truth", or "its all relative", and all kinds of these phrases. But when I actually started to listen to atheists, I never once heard anything even close to what I was told they would say. It was a huge slap in the face to me. it's true that not everyone, or even most atheists, would say those things, that's not the point. the point is that everything IS relative by logic IF there is no god. what atheists say or don't say is irrelevant. what's important is the implications. i think what frank is really saying is "atheism will tell you" instead of "atheist will tell you" and maybe he's equating those two but you would be correct to say those two have different meaning.

That is an excellent realization, and a very difficult one to have and to further work on. Human nature definitely pushes the "must be right" mentality super hard, and when we find we're wrong on something, there are two ways we can go: Either insist we were never wrong to begin with, and attack the thing that made us think we were, or change our understanding to BECOME right again. Either way you _feel_ right, but in only one case are you _actually_ correct.
This realization of yours (and hopefully my own comment) will go a long way towards keeping you on the actually-right side of things as you go through life. It's a very nice place to be :D No nagging doubts in the back of your head, no discomfort at the strange inconsistencies of your various beliefs. It's a very pleasant experience all-around, though it can at times be hard to pick this long-term option in the face of instant gratification.

Many years ago I read an outline of steps that most heroic narratives take place, from Joseph Campbell. From my memory, i list them below.
12 Steps of the Heroic Narrative
    1) the Hero is born, usually in simple surroundings, usually of mysterious circumstances.
The Hero may be descended from royalty or even a god.
    2) The Hero grows up normally but may display an unusual talent of wisdom
    3) as a young adult, the Hero feels the need of a call to action, usually from a threat to his family, tribe, or nation
    4) the hero has self doubt as to his worthiness to to answer the call
    5) the Hero is now ready to accept his call to action, and
    6) begins a Quest, to help his people but this is also a quest of self-discovery
    7) on this Quest, the Hero makes friends, (disciples), enemies and challenges that test him in a variety of ways
    8) on his Quest, he may have to go into a cave or underworld and face a challenge, a temptation, or a monster of some kind
    9) the Hero survives the underworld challenge and goes on to even greater battles
    10) the Hero may not survive this battle, or He is betrayed by someone He trusts
    11) the Hero dies, but is resurrected
    12) the Hero must now depart his land, but promises to return sometime in the future in a time of great need of His people.
As you can see, this narrative is followed by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, King Arthur, Hercules, Lord of the Rings, and the story of Jesus.

What happens if your answer to "Does truth exist?" is "I dunno, maybe?" It's like how Pyrro the skeptic felt that, in order to truly have no opinion on any question of truth, he had to just grunt and shrug, because answering yes or no was playing the game that he thought couldn't be played.
