  • In this episode, we'll deconstruct Deuteronomy 28, where god lays out the blessings and curses for those who obey, and those who don't.
Please keep in mind that all everything I say here is my subjective opinion, and is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist/evangelical/conservative Christian ideologies from an ex christian perspective

'Love' the feeling or 'love' the actions? If you act your love as if someone loved you but they really didn't, you are simply naive, which is not a virtue. If you let them go their own way because they will do nothing else, that is love of their freedom and agency. God does that always, which is unconditional. He just lets us suffer the consequences of our actions, which is also love.
You seem to have a very limited idea of love.

the Creator will let Jesus Christ RESURRECT them back to life so they can all happily and abundantly live and exist on earth forever as submissive and obedient subjects of the "KINGDOM of GOD" or His Kingdom
and fully enjoy his and his Christ's eternal love, kindness, goodness, compassions, generosities, favors, and blessings for eternity under the loving and kind rulership, guidance, and protection of Jesus Christ as his Chosen King and Ruler of the heavens and the earth as written in Revelation 11: 15.

In fact, is there literally any geological proof of the exodus? Or any of your claims for that matter? The last time I did in depth research, the theological claims lacked actual sufficient proof of the events (and even those that really should have left their mark of the earth. Like a massive human migration, which we have records of all around the world much earlier than the exodus.
What moral reason did god have to make pharaoh say no? He says it himself in exodus. “I will harden his heart so he will not let your people go” and he sent plague after plague and then did a little murder spree. Then he killed pharaoh and his army. Do you know what this implies? First of all-lack of free will. Second of all, it implies pharaoh was going to release the Israelites upon request from his brother had god not interfered at that point. Wouldn’t that have been a better, more amicable solution? Why were the teachings of Jesus so starkly contrasted to the actions of god?
Have you ever actually looked into how we got to todays Bible? Not as “unchanging” and “everlasting” as the word of god should be. Even from the beginning of its conception, it was passed between different sects and added to and subtracted from and new books were added then some were taken away long BEFORE the council of Nicaea. Since then? The perversion is unspeakable.
I remember some of the punishments I received from my incredibly god fearing mother, and I remember thinking they were cruel and unnecessary. And I still do. The harsh punishment came from a lack of understanding between us because “god” drove that wedge in. Might does NOT equal right. That way of thinking hurts people and lacks empathy. Why would you not want to care for and understand your hurting child?

The English sound of J is unknown in any other important language. Jesus, like every sun god, in the bible, is both male (I) and female (U). The female symbol can be written as O, V, and U. Jove should be written as IOVE. IU Piter is the creator god throughout the bible. We should always be mindful that the entire bible is a Roman creation.

Agreed. It is interesting that, in the Old Testament, a major them is that God rewards the Israelites when they are faithful to him and punishes them when they are unfaithful, but in the New Testament, Jesus comes along and says that those who are faithful are supposed to suffer in this life so they can be rewarded in the next life. Those Christians you mention may say that they are "storing up treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:20), or that their light and momentary sufferings are nothing compared to the eternal glory that awaits them (2 Corinthians 4:17). If we follow the Christian assumption that the OT and NT God is the same God, then why did he change his mind? Why is it now that his faithful must suffer, when in the past they were rewarded. Also, if Heaven is so important, then why did he only talk to the Israelites in terms of earthly punishments and rewards?

The Bible also describes this curse hundreds of years later:
She said, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, and we will eat him today. Then we will eat my son tomorrow.’ So we boiled my son and ate him, and I said to her the next day, ‘Give up your son, and we will eat him,’ but she has hidden her son.” (2 Kings 6:28b-29)
During the Aramean siege an extreme famine led to this. Who is to blame? Is it God, Israelite disobedience, the women's actions, or the besieging Arameans? By the next chapter, Elisha predicts relief, and with the Arameans' departure, food becomes abundant.

Kristi, I am subscribed to many channels, but yours is the only one of which I’ve turned on the bell. Thank you for everything you do. This is such a critical chapter for people with a working moral compass.
I remember being in the car with my mom and my brother one time and I asked them what they thought about God commanding people to eat their children. They immediately said, “What?! It doesn’t say that.. absolutely not” I pulled up the verse on my phone, handed it to my brother, he began reading with confidence, and I will never forget the look on his face and the stutter in his voice when he got to verse 53. My mom was equally appalled.
I remember also being shocked at how God commanded/endorsed the consumption of one’s children in 4 additional places in the Bible:
Leviticus 26:29 (a less detailed version of the curses in Deuteronomy)
Ezekiel 5:8-10 (the punishment in action)
    Jeremiah 19:9 (and again)
2 Kings 6:28-29 (God waited until women ate their children before giving them food the next day)
Lamentations 4:10-11 (God made people eat their children as a means of payback-see the end of chapter 3)

I would love for everyone to become a Christian, but I don't think we should force anyone into our faith (though unfortunately it does happen). Like you said, it just results in people leaving Christianity later on. We need to love people just as much if they reject our faith. People need to be supported to make up their own decisions about whether Jesus is truly the Son of God. Jesus wanted only the most committed followers; he never forced anyone to follow him. "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple" Luke 14:26, NIV. We usually don't take "hate" completely literally but Jesus definitely had high standards for his disciples.

Kristi, I haven’t taken the time to become familiar with the Old Testament, so your presentation of this material was interesting and useful. It doesn’t change my beliefs or behavior because whatever concept I have of a “god” is so radically different from the Hebrew understanding. It’s useful in trying to grasp what the people of this faith accept. One needs to keep in mind the fact that “god” is not demanding this acquiescence and worship. It’s the spiritual and political leaders of this religion that are utilizing the reward and punishment game to control the people through fear. This was the most effective method of keeping the people in line. The key ingredient is the personification of god. People can only comprehend a god that reasons and behaves in the same manner as a human. That results in a very small and petty conception of god. These ideas were conceived at a time when earthquakes, volcanoes and the weather were considered “acts of god”. It’s sad to realize that there are still millions of people who believe in a god of this nature.

THE WORLD RULER TRIES TO KILL ME
And then a voice of the world ruler came to the angels: “I am god and there is no other god but me.” But I laughed joyfully when I examined his conceit. But he went on to say, “Who is the human?”
And the entire host of his angels who had seen Adam and his dwelling were laughing at his smallness. And thus did their thought come to be removed outside the majesty of the heavens, away from the human of truth, whose name they saw, since he is in a small dwelling place. They are foolish and senseless in their empty thought, namely, their laughter, and it was contagion for them.
The whole greatness of the fatherhood of the spirit was at rest in its places. And I was with him, since I have a thought of a single emanation from the eternal ones and the unknowable ones, undefiled and immeasurable. I placed the small thought in the world, having disturbed them and frightened the whole multitude of the angels and their ruler. And I was visiting them all with fire and flame because of my thought.
And everything pertaining to them was brought about because of me. And there came about a disturbance and a fight around the seraphim and cherubim, since their glory will fade, and there was confusion around Adonaios on both sides and around their dwelling, up to the world ruler and the one who said, “Let us seize him.” Others again said, “The plan will certainly not materialize.” For Adonaios knows me because of hope. And I was in the mouths of lions. And as for the plan that they devised about me to release their error and their senselessness, I did not succumb to them as they had planned. And I was not afflicted at all.
Those who were there punished me, yet I did not die in reality but in appearance, in order that I not be put to shame by them because these are my kinsfolk. I removed the shame from me, and I did not become fainthearted in the face of what happened to me at their hands. I was about to succumb to fear, and I suffered merely according to their sight and thought so that no word might ever be found to speak about them.
For my death, which they think happened, happened to them in their error and blindness, since they nailed their man unto their death. Their thoughts did not see me, for they were deaf and blind. But in doing these things, they condemn themselves. Yes, they saw me; they punished me.
It was another, their father, who drank the gall and the vinegar; it was not I. They struck me with the reed; it was another, Simon, who bore the cross on his shoulder. It was another upon whom they placed the crown of thorns. But I was rejoicing in the height over all the wealth of the rulers and the offspring of their error, of their empty glory. And I was laughing at their ignorance.

The worse part of these passages is knowing that all of these horrible curses actually came true anyway despite the Jewish people obeying the commandments faithfully. Subjugation and enslavement by the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans is detailed in the Bible itself. Then compound that with all of the horrible events that happened in the Diaspora, the Middle Ages, the Holocaust. If you take Deuteronomy seriously, the believers themselves are to blame for all of it. Not their religious and political leaders' failures in judgement and character. Not their enemies' violence, ruthlessness and avarice. Every bad thing that has ever happened to God's chosen people is a direct consequence of their personal failures, even if they never enjoyed personal autonomy themselves because they followed a king or some lunatic cult leader, or were submissive to their husbands, or were literal slaves to some occupying power. This book gives God, his priesthood and his anointed kings plausible deniability no matter what disasters and outrages were committed against the Jewish people. Deuteronomy is disgusting and I wish everyone, believers included, would bracket this book from the rest of the world's literature and admit that this book never had positive value for anyone of any time. Pre-emptive victim blaming is a scam and we don't have to fall for it anymore.

@@Lerian_V The only witnesses against Israel's unbelief is the authors of the Bible itself and they had every motive to lie. God apparently doesn't punish people for slandering corpses. The Bible promised the Israelites that if they slaughtered and enslaved all of the unbelieving pagans in the land of Canaan, they would be safe in that land flowing with milk and honey. The Canaanites were not accused of not worshipping their gods sufficiently. They were accused of placing their faith in idols that had no power to save them. False nonexistent gods. Israel and Judah are subsequently conquered and enslaved by different groups of unbelieving pagans. How is that possible? Obviously God had no power to protect them. Obviously he was a false god. A god who punishes his believers by handing them over to pagans who worship false gods is such a weak, vindictive, pathetic god. That the Jewish people did not give up their beliefs even when they were conquered and enslaved is how I know the Bible is lying about them. They were not faithless unbelievers. 2, you assumed I left my "love for jesus". Your Christianity is not rule, nor dominion, and your book God is a bipolar, beneficent tyrant of the ancient near east.
Have you ever read the Satanic Bible?
Sure you have, it's called the Old Testiment. A clear depiction of how Satan/Lucifer rules his kingdom.
People with sever cognitive dissonance will say, "The greatest trick satan has ever done, wS convince the world he doesnt exist" 🤣🤣🤣
Satan's greatest trick is convincing the world he is God!
I didn't loose my love for Christ. I closed the door to antichrist teachings, and there is no greater testiment for Satan than the antichrist apostle Pauline church.
      That's Where I Stand! 🤗

I wouldn't define that as biogtry or hate. It's just that God probably is really against it, and they're trying to follow him. Turns out he's not too great of a God, but that's not the people's fault. They think they're threatened with eternal torture and have to think this way. Hello, I am from Japan!
(※ I’m sorry for the wall of text.)
I came across your video a while ago and have been watching it, but this is my first comment.
I am a Christian and a graduate student in a theology department. On the other hand, I started doubting about the goodness of God about 5 years ago and it has not been resolved yet.
As such, the "problem of evil" is one of the issues I need to tackle.
School bullying, suicide, accidents, cancer, and all other misfortunes. Why God does not stop these things, I do not know. Obviously, isn't this evidence enough to say that God is not creating an environment in which all human beings can exercise their free will to the fullest?
(Especially in Japan, where suicide by bullying has become a major problem, and it pains my heart.)
I am even angry at the Church's optimistic attitude toward these current situations, using free will theory to dismiss the problem.
Perhaps God is not good in the first place. Religious beliefs based on forgiveness not only further complicate the relationship with the Old Testament, but have even raised the suspicion that New Testament is not a religion designed to bring comfort to the weak, but to bring grace to the very wicked.
(Morally the worst book ever written.)
I am currently working on my master's thesis on theodicy, and I possess multiple other grounds on which free will is not given, both from a grammatical standpoint and for philosophical reasons.
Above all, I am happy to have met you through TH-cam.
I hope to be able to apply it and use it in learning much from you in the future.
Please keep up the good work.
From a small little lost Christian in Japan. Sorry if my English is wrong.
P.S.: I am impressed by your elegant way of using language, your clear analogies, and your simplified way of composing parables. I would like to practice deconstruction in the same elegant way as you do.
If you don't mind, I would be glad if you could share with me some references that have taught you a great deal. I will do my best to study them!

  • @tedgemberling2359
    @tedgemberling2359 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Kristi, I notice one person disparages the idea that "it's all about context," but I think the context is really complicated. Here, to me, is one of the most important statements in the Bible. In Job 42:7 God says to Job's "comforters": “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has." Now, as some scholars have pointed out, this is an ambiguous statement. When did Job speak rightly? They have argued that this is an intentional ambiguity. That the Book of Job is a veiled critique of what is sometimes called "Deuteronomic Theology." Your success and happiness in life are determined by how well you follow God's law. When Job was written, thoughtful Jews knew that wasn't really true. There was a lot of undeserved suffering.
Another thing in the Bible that is really notable is the story of Josiah in Kings and Chronicles. This was pointed out by the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. To put it in context, you have to think about what those books say about Hezekiah, another king a bit earlier. It says "Because Hezekiah followed God's law faithfully, he was successful in everything he did." Kings and Chronicles say Josiah followed the law faithfully, too, but he was defeated and killed in battle by an Egyptian Pharaoh. How come? In Chronicles, the writer tries to reconcile it with the Deuteronomic theology. 35:21-23 says that the Pharaoh sent a message saying God had called him to go to battle, and Josiah was opposing God! II Kings 23 treats it as just a tragedy, not some kind of punishment from God. The Kings account seems much more truthful, and Job showed a realization of this.
Now, bear with me, I think there is a little more to say about this. Christianity has an additional problem: it doesn’t have what you could call “case law.” In other words, it doesn’t have the body of commentary and dialogue about ethical things that you see in the Talmud or in Islamic jurisprudence. Protestantism particularly opposes anything like that. Everything is supposed to be settled by what the Bible says. But sometimes the Bible contradicts itself. This might not be completely unique to Christianity, though. I understand there is a strand of Judaism called Karaism that also says every Jew must just read the Torah for him/herself and figure out what God wants. That can be pretty hard.
An example of how this plays out in Christianity now is a dispute between what is called “Lordship Salvation” and “Easy Believism.” Lordship Salvation means that if you are a Christian, Christ must be your Lord. You must become more like him in behavior. Easy Believism means if you just say the “sinner’s prayer” and decide to believe in Christianity, you are going to heaven. It doesn’t demand any change in the way you live. I saw a video by an Easy Believism adherent who said Lordship Salvation is too hard and that she’s known people who committed suicide because they couldn’t be as good as Christ. This shows that Christians are not doing a very good job of thinking about how people really need to live. We as humans are active beings; we need to be able to feel good about things we do. It isn’t enough just to subscribe to a set of doctrines. I also suspect that Easy Believism shows a certain deterioration in Evangelical Christianity. When you see that Donald Trump is now considered some sort of “Christian” leader, that suggests that a lot of Evangelicals have decided not to demand any evidence of good character. Now, this is not to say that Trump couldn’t be a Christian; but to be one, he would have to say “I used to do bad things; I have now turned away from them.”

It’s amazing that the Bible is still considered in high regard by so many people.

Really enjoyed this. However, why do so many deconstructionists sound like they still believe in a God, and they're just really disappointed in Him. Only people could come up with all of this, because it generally plays right into our most basic fears.

@@andrewisble3963 I answered your question; 'why do so many deconstruct...?' ONE, they did believe at one time, so thestance is : speak 'as if' (as if, the Christian fantasy were true') this is a fair and non-threatening stance to have; ...I'm not sure what more you want. That was deconstructing is: So let's say the Tooth Fairy exists: so, she comes in and leaves a buck or two for your teeth, then how, why, etc...? Same for any alien abduction fantasies, why, how, etc...basic premise.

Because GOD put eternaty in our hearts/ spirits and new us before we were born, which means we new him before we were born and our inner self knows this, GOD is not cruel man is cruel now saying that who knows if those things written were indeed GODS voice or man's but know this whatever GOD does or does not do is his decision and what can man do to stop a GOD?!! We don't because ultimutly GOD is in his right to do as he pleases we are his creation and I just pray that those who still trust him will not turn away from him

So you never actually received the Holy spirit..

@@nick8945 Schucks, so many Christians presume to know exactly what goes on in my own heart and how that translates into where my spiritual life supposedly went wrong. Fact is: only I (and God, if you insist) know what the true intentions of my heart are. I was radically saved and gave my life to Jesus in October 1989. Nobody has the necessary insight into my heart to say that my conversion was not true. In accordance with the Bible this conversion would not have been possible without the working of the holy spirit. So hopefully this answers your question. It's just that, over years, the words in this god-book were repeatedly being proven to be seriously at odds with what nature was showing us.

@@spaceman081447 Oh this happened waaaay back when the Dead sea was still sick. I honestly can't exactly remember all the details. I did read with the congregation through all the blessings and all the curses (for dramatic effect). I probably would have said something to the effect that, if the blessings are so rich and abundant, and the curses are so devastating, why would anyone choose for the curses.
