Urgent need to promote Uganda sign language in Education

The government has been urged to popularize Uganda Sign Language as part of efforts to improve the academic performance of learners with hearing disabilities. Advocates for people living with hearing impairments point out that many learners, especially those born to parents without this disability, only encounter the official sign language in school. They argue that this makes it hard for them to comprehend learning materials. Alongside popularizing Uganda Sign Language, advocates also want the study of the English language to be emphasized for both deaf learners and teachers as a language of instruction.
