Thank you so much for explaining the visuals and WHY it would be that sign. Knowing things like "the Sun's positioning and horizon" make it so much easier to understand.
There's a big difference in memorizing things to know (ie cramming for exams), and truly learning things. I can't wait to be able to sign fluently and eventually converse

Service worker here (restaurant server), we have a regular who is deaf that would come once a week to dine at our place. I wanted to be able to communicate in ASL so I could make his dining experience better than just series of charades. Sooo here I am trying to learn as much as I can
I’m starting to learn ASL because I feel like it’s something everyone should know. I don’t have anyone in my life that’s deaf but I feel like knowing sign language makes you a much better person!!! I’ve come across a couple of deaf people in my life but nothing to the extreme just a couple of customers at work, but it made me sad that I wasn’t able to communicate with him properly. My goal for 2023 is to learn sign language and this is helping me so much.! Btw one thing is the sign language for good morning is a bad word in the Middle East. It’s a little different but it’s practically the same. When I was l showing my mom she told me it’s kind of a curse word.😮

you're thinking about the "up yours!" aka arm of honor gesture which is common in many parts of the world outside the U.S.
thankfully the two are actually very different and unlikely to be confused in practical use. with "up yours!" the dominant hand is tightly fisted and the other slaps the dominant hand's bicep aggressively, with an angry face with furrowed eyebrows to accompany it. it's a gesture that requires violent movements to convey meaning.
with the ASL's "morning" sign however, both hands are notably kept completely flat and open , with the dominant hand rising around the flat horizon arm gracefully rather than a violent collision to the bicep. the sign is rarely going to be accompanied by a face other than positive, neutral, or sleepy.

"i" is in the video. you point to yourself.
"learn" is kind of like pretending to grab knowledge and put it into your head. i would find a video.
and "sign" is spinning your index fingers around eachother. hope this helps!!
I'm excited to learn ASL. Not that I know anyone deaf but I always had wanted to learn it, but my school and college never offered it. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel.
I'm gonna have to watch this video over and over to assimilate the signs into my head. The sentences really help. Thinking in blocks of sentences instead of "Hello", "good", "morning" is so much easier. Also learnt my name in manual alphabet as well!
Thanks so much for making this channel! It's an amazing resource for learning ASL as an absolute beginner. So far I've only learned to fingerspell; moving on to learning so many new signs and phrases was tough, but your explanations for why some signs are the way they are has been helping. My mother's a preschool teacher and I'm planning to become a pediatrician. I've come across many deaf children in her school and it really made me want to be able to converse with them and others like them in the future. I'm so excited at the thought of being able to sign fluently soon!

THANKS A LOT!! this is the best asl learning channel, not only because you explain things, like the horizon thing for the morning/afternoon/night signs or the no sign, but also because you explain which hand is supposed to do the movements, like I always thought it HAD to be the right hand for most of them, but it's your dominant one!

I was interested in learning sign language, and now I've finished this video. I like it. Learning sign language is like therapy for me. You know, I mean I enjoy and feel peaceful while learning sign language. I'd definitely be happy to learn sign language and help a deaf person. I also want to learn and understand what deaf people talk to each other while using sign language.

@@LearnHowtoSign i homeschool my now 16yr old (YIKES!!) son...im not really into "labels" but my son was diagnosed as autistic (& fantastic!!) a couple yrs ago. Its sometimes difficult to find things he's really interested in/enthusiastic about! At just a few mths old he began using his hands constantly (we call em puppet hands) & people would ask me if he was using ASL. I did teach him some baby basics, but he has just always used puppet hands. So about a yr ago while trying to encourage him to try something new, we began incorporating your ASL videos into our curriculum. He was immediately engaged & ASL seem to come very naturally to him. Almost a yr in & he is STILL enjoys learning ASL & is actually looks forward to it! He's also very good at it!! We plan to start w/Skill Share soon! What you do, teaching ASL on TH-cam is super important!! This is a skill my son can take w/him & use for the rest of his life! So sincerely, THANK YOU!! My daughter was born deaf in 1997. She attended Atlanta School For The Deaf. They used Signed English. Now I am raising her deaf son, and they use ASL. I still use what I know, and he understands me, also learning ASL. My problem is understanding what the deaf person is saying to me. There are several deaf in my family, and I can see the frustration in their face when they have to keep repeating themselves. Especially my grandson, who thinks I should know more. I will take your courses, praying it helps! Feeling stupid.

im 15 going deaf so i need to learn these. It was my fault because i fell asleep with headphones and it went deep inside my ears hurt for days then my hearing started deteriorating, my parents don't believe me
Is it any better??
I used to sleep with earphones in all the time until I burst an eardrum one night. Be aware people, sleeping with earphones can cause irreparable damage to your ears.
Luckily my hearing has returned after a few months as the hole in my eardrum healed but for a while I had just come to terms with the fact that I may not hear well from that ear for the rest of my life which was a possibility according to the doctors. The pain was also excruciating with gross neon liquid leaking from it due to infection
If you sleep with earphones please save yourself the risk and find an alternative like the headbands with tiny built-in speakers designed for listening to audio while you sleep. It's not worth the risk of losing your hearing or the pain

I’ve recently started learning asl. I’m going to learn in-depth about the grammar of sign in the future, but could u make a video about grammar? Or do u have one already?
I am very newly deaf (6-5-23) and am just starting to learn sign language thanks to your wonderful videos. I am a long time sailboat racer but cannot find any signs for that sport (tack, gybe, hoist, douse, .....) that would allow me to communicate with my fellow crew quickly and seamlessly. Knowing the 'approved' signs would allow me to transfer to other boats/crews more easily. Are there such, or should we/I just make up our own signs? Thanks for any help guidance. Keep putting our your great content!

Hi! I watched another one of your videos about ASL sentence structure, and had a questions after watching this one. In the structure video, you said that it goes topic then comment. So when you sign « Nice to meet you » why do you sign it in those words and not « You nice to meet?

Do you recommend any asl books for beginners? My mother lost her hearing, and it will be a while before she gets an implant. However, still needs the basics until then and beyond when she is not wearing the device. Thanks
I enjoy all the signs, but asl sentences and grammar confuses me
The trick is to put English sentences into the ASL Topic-Comment structure. It can be challenging to do because English has words that ASL does not use. I still have difficulty putting long sentences into ASL, but we will master it. With some focus and practice, we can communicate accurately the Deaf. I want to interpret, not to sign.

Yes, the grammar is topic-comment structure so it is different from English. When watching our examples sentences, think of why we structure them that way. Hopefully that will help.

Hi! No, Canada uses ASL as well. There will be some variations with regional signs, but that’s the same case in the US.

Hi! May I ask, when asking for a person's name is it okay to sign "you name what you?" or "your name what?" I've seen it done both ways and I wasn't sure if there is a more correct way to use possessive signs like my, your, etc.

Are “thank you” and “good/well” using the same hand shapes, movement, palm orientations? I’m trying to discern between the two and am confused. I appreciate any clarification!
with 'good/well' your dominant hand comes down to your non-domninant hand with both palms facing up. with 'thank you' you do not use your other hand

Hi Meredith, have you ever thought about making a ASL video for singing using sign language. there's a fantastic channel called Melodysigns and she uses Makaton sign language but puts music in the background and signs along to the music, She has done [Do-Re-Mi] from the sound of music as well as [Wellerman Sea Shanty] by Nathan Evans. It would be amazing to learn these songs in ASL and i hope you consider this idea.
