Are you ready to have a conversation in ASL today? In this video I'm teaching you 50 basic ASL conversational signs that you can begin to put into your ASL conversations.
To make it easier to navigate I've broken it down into sections and have numbered all of the signs. Use the chapter markers to easily navigate to a specific word/phrase and watch a sign again. You can also slow the video down.
Check out our other videos on conversational signs and phrases included some quizzes to test your understanding.

I suddenly had 3 a.m motivation to learn ASL
bro it’s 3 am I’m watching this 💀

So real

Im currently a biggenier and what is encouraging me to learn is to help people tbh . My story behind this was when i saw this deaf worker at the grocery store who was trying to communicate with the cashier and since then i started to learn at least the basic to any deaf person i see
Same same. My closest friend was born with two deaf and mute parents, and I could always speak a bit but not much. I ran into a couple at a busy coffee shop and the worker was like having none of it… and I know how stressful it is for them to try and “go out” like a freaking normal person without feeling like heck because they hold up the line…. I was able to help them order, at one point I said pen*s instead of thank you 😅 they laughed… but apparently I got their order right. Since then it’s been like a passion of mine I wanna be able to hep.
I started as well
Ooh, that's nice! Personally i'm learning, yes to help. But also because I do selective mutism especially in social context so by learning, I still have a way to communicate when I can't verbally talk. Also teaching some to friends, familly, Teachers ect. So every body can understand. So now yeah, i'm casually speaking asl with my foreign language teacher(french) who also knew sign language when I met her.
I have a small hand held sign that says “I am deaf” and need to read your lips. It
Got 49 out of the 50.
"Oh, I see" was new to me.
Thank you for helping us learn.
Oh i see haha get it
Oh i see was a new one to me to 😆
Not just that you include such helpful categories and clear speaking, but you also organize every sign and every extra information!
You also include many captions and this may be just a coincidence, but your very easy to lip read as well, even over a device. You have helped me so much in learning this beautiful visual language, thank you so much, Meredith!!!
The Best asl teacher. God bless you. From Dominican Republic.
I appreciate how you demonstrate. Its much easier to grasp. Thank you.
Thank you so much for these videos Meredith! I am on the spectrum and tend to get non-verbal when I feel overstimulated, signing helps me still get my point across to my close friends and family. I love how easy you make it to understand and that you explain each sign.
Thank you for commenting this my son is non verbal and autistic. I’m trying to learn asl to teach him
@@ari3lismso is my brother
These videos are incredibly helpful coming from a background where none of this was ever taught or even discussed. I initially wanted to learn ASL because I worked in customer service and often came across deaf people who just show me their notes app to tell me what they want. I learned some basic communication in a work environment from another video of yours. I work at a school now and although I don’t use it anymore, it’s something I can be confident in when the opportunity presents itself. Thank you for that
I love these refresher videos. I work with several deaf associates, and while I don't see them often, keeping my skills up is very important to me. I'd love to see a video about death/losing loved ones. Signs for sympathy and such. Happy Holidays!
might be selfish, but im trying to learn so i can have silent convos w my family when im older. i think its so amazing that we as humans can connect in peace, especially in such a robust world.
hey, im learning for fun! so what if your doing it for that reason? at least your doing it.
That actually sounds like a lot of fun to be able to have a private conversation with someone you know in a public place
Such a GREAT RESOURCE!😀😃 This Will be the newest link that I send out whenever I spread the word about your wonderful channel!!! ✨💎👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Wow like half an hour of this and I feel like I’m already picking up quite easily!!
this was very helpful to me especially as a beginner. the examples she gives to remember really help out. my boyfriends parents are both deaf and they are always amazed with the new words i learn and how fast im learning!
these are really helpful im not deaf but i go non verbal and signing would make the world of difference for me its so cool how ive always used so many of these signs in my daily life since before i can remember not even knowing about sign language because they just make sense
Thank you so much I learned a lot from you. I’m interested in learning sign language, because two people in my family are deaf. Your videos helps me I like the way you explains slowly and show everything step-by-step. Thank you and have a lovely and happy life.
ThankI you for all the great video's - you make learning ASL fun and easy ! ❤
You have been so amazing in teaching ❤ much love
This is amazing so helpful and so many different vidoes, love you showing all thr variations of signs others only show one variation, 🙌🏼👐🏼🙌🏼👐🏼👐🏼🤲🏼👐🏼
I want to get better because at work we occasionally have deaf customers and I just know a little bit so I want to get better so I can help them on what there looking for
And I also went to school with 1 or 2 deaf students almost every ear too so that’s how I started leading sign language
💯 correct. Love these quizzes.
This is incredibmy useful, thank you very much for all the explanations and hard work. Aprecciate it!❤
I love your videos, Meredith! I have learned so much and continue to build vocabulary everyday. Please could you teach the sign for “You’re welcome” ? Thank you soooo much!!
if you look at her like 50 beginner signs video youre welcome should be there, also I think that she made a video just about thank you and youre welcome. I might be mistaken though.
Hey I learned a few new signs with this video. Thanks!
I want to help others and this is a great start
Tysm for making this! I have a project coming up and I am Helen Keller so I. Need to learn this to act like her! TYSM!!!
This is great content as I am just beginning to learn ASL. Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!
This is so helpful
Thanks so much for these videos. I was hoping you could do a video on comparison like "my dad is older than your dad" or "this box is heavier than that box"
Very useful video!
Thank you so much.. learning english sign language ... it's right good
I am so happy that now , I understand how to use sign language. Is my first time to have a teacher like this one. I now understand how to sign number s , I was signing it wrong way, for an example I was signing 1 as i , 9 as 3, 3as 8. I onenced learn alphabet from a to z but when I meet someone who is deaf it was a challenge for me to communicate with him or her. I one saw a book for sign language but it was not easy for me to understand it. I also meet someone who can talk and he did teach me some of the signs but some of the signs were different from that one for an example I love you" I was signed across chest by one arm, the love signed both arms across the chest and then 'you' was signed as if you are pushing something
Thanks! You’re awesome! 🥰
You’re welcome ☺️ 🤟
Sou deficiente auditivo no Brasil e adoro seus vídeos
Im so excited to learn...I'm a day in and almost have my alphabet 😊
Thanks 🙏 I love you videos ❤❤
What days do you upload videos?
I would like to know the days to be attentive, I thought they were only Saturdays, but thank you for all your help in this ASL
You're welcome 😊 we usually upload on Tuesday mornings, but we don’t hold to that all the time.
Salaam Alayakum first one thanks my dear teacher 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Love learning this. Have problem with locking little finger, arthritis. Any suggestions.
ASL is cool as hell
Thank you for this session...just a little fyi: Sign #12 you referred to 5 hands coming together (in stead of fingers)...or maybe you were just seeing if we were paying attention!
You awesome ❤❤❤❤
So cool ❤
lol I love this girl
I have always wanted to learn and so even though I have extremely good hearing ever since I knew what it is I was like this is cool and in case I run into a deaf person that is having a hard time understanding someone that I can translate
My dad has 2 deaf uncles and the last time i meant them was at my grandma's funeral, so i wanna learn some basics:)
Understand 😊
I've never seen SIGN as S hands opening and closing. I'm glad I learned that today. For SEE YOU LATER I don't sign SEE. I just put the L hand at my temple and turn it downward. Is this ok?

When the Covid masking debacle hit us I found that many peoples only conversational skills included mumbling. I made, and still carry, a 4x5 card that says in bold letters “I am deaf and need to read your lips”. Those that have some signing skills respond readily. This who do not sign look face to face with me to communicate. I always teach them “thank you and see you later” before stepping away.
Great
Fine 🙂
Work 😊
Thank you for this I’ve had a few deaf people come into Walmart and I feel bad my signing is or was so bad. One guy asked for my name and I thought he asked for my weight and I started yelling at him but he was cool and laughed it off saying you’re new to asl aren’t you? I’m glad I watched because now I feel like I can have a basic conversation with someone at least at work much better
I'm here because of sign of affection
YOUR SO REAL FOR THAT BECAUSE ME TOOOOOO 😭😭
OMG SAMMEMEMMMEKD BRO I BECAME INTERESTED AND CURIOUS ABT SL AND IT'D BE USEFUL TO LEARN IT
I like this video. However, I prefer the old sign for “what” I don’t see it in dictionaries anymore must be outdated but I still use it.
I got a track meet tomorrow and a school for the deaf is attending so I’m here at 9 pm trying to learn as much as I can’t before tomorrow 😭
Well 😊
How do I sign up for the email?
Best way I was told to remember age was to think of it like tugging on a long beard.
Edit and thank you for the video lessons.
I’m looking for an instructor to teach a class online for my student

Can you do a ASL video relate to healthcare. I work at a hospital and would like to help people who come asking for help.
We just did one recently. The entire public service signs playlist would be great for you as well. th-cam.com/video/qEO3L1QQ3dM/w-d-xo.html
Do you have print outs or checklist?
We do not. What types of printouts would you be interested in?
Hello, I'm a beginner, 61 and hard of hearing. what I'm finding is that I don't have complete range of my fingers due to injuries and arthritis. For example I'm not able to extend my thumb over my palm as far as needed for the letter M . any suggestions? thank you!
You could touch your thumb to your inner palm as much as possible, while turning down the three fingers as much as possible. If you’re signing to someone who knows theirs letters and they understand you’re signing, they will understand you. That’s the beauty of sign as well, it is forgiving and, bonus! Practicing sing will give you hand exercises that will alleviate your pain and improve your dexterity. :) ❤
Good luck Dream Boy
I started watching your videos then I stopped now i am doing it again but I remember I started bc the movie a silent voice it is so sad😢😢
Megusta ❤❤❤
I really appreciate these. Years ago I took several ASL classes and "good" and "thank you" were straight out from the chin/mouth, but Meredith slides to the side first. Has the sign changed or is it just a variation? Thanks.
Yeah I also usually see them straight out, definitely hasn't changed so probably a rare variation or mistake?
How do u sign "he's hearing but non verbal" ? My son is non verbal autistic, he hears well, and he's not mute but he doesn't speak well
Id look up the sign for autistic. I've seen it before I can't remember it...😢
I still have a lot of trouble when getting signed too, it always feels too fast. 😅
Busy 😊
As a ex mute purson im wondering if ASL have axsetes becuse yes sign is y that gos into a s
hey do more different asl Meredith like dinosaur asl please. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Asl dinosaur? Hmm… only I know two dinosaurs asl: Triceratops and Brontosaurus. That will be definitely interesting to see more dinosaur asl ❤❤❤

What's up? 😊
I really know sign language and had to use it younger for real with a certain person and because a lot of people were evil to me formely. It will never happen again thank God. even the person who says I was his only wife every year but he didn't treat me right and was not really nice at all. He was nice sometimes but not all the times. I would love for GOD to write the love style that I really want everyday with that special pereson i fell in love with on my 18 birthday and for real in the chevy chase ysa and married ward. at 19-21. They were kidnapping me back and forth to ms and maryland that's how evil they wete all of them for lgbt women , men and children to eat and be around me almost everywhere..and for them to not have to do anything.
